When you talk with your kids about sex matters. How you do it is just as important. In this episode of the All Pro Dad Podcast, host Ted Lowe is joined by renowned family expert Jim Burns, founder of HomeWord, to pinpoint when the right time is to bring up the topic of sex with your kids and how to handle such a touchy subject. We get it. This can be intimidating for dads, but conversations about sex must be handled well. We know this can be uncomfortable, but if we don't tackle this topic with our children someone else surely will. You may not like what they teach your kid! As Ted and Jim discuss, it's important for dads to take the lead in this area. Why This MattersThere are many competing voices trying to influence our children about sexual topics. Dads need to prepare for this and teach kids about sex with their family values in mind. Timing and Approach: The discussion focuses on finding the appropriate age and approach for these conversations, tailored to each child's individual development and maturity level.Building Trust and Relationships: The episode stresses the importance of building a strong parent-child relationship based on trust and open communication as the foundation for healthy discussions about sex.Important Episode Timestamps· (00:00 - 02:15) Introduction & Guest Speaker Dr. Jim Burns· (02:15 - 04:18) Meet Dr. Jim Burns: A Passion for Family & Parenting · (04:18 - 05:11) Big Question: How & When Do I Talk to My Kid About Sex?· (05:11 - 07:52) Why Parents Struggle to Talk About Sex· (07:52 - 11:59) The Right Age to Start the Conversation · (11:59 - 14:10) The Influence of Culture & Social Media on Kids' Views on Sex · (14:10 - 18:00) Dads as Safe Spaces: Encouraging Open Conversations· (18:00 - 21:02) Addressing Pornography & Sexual Curiosity in Kids· (21:02 - 24:37) Practical Strategies for Having ‘The Talk'· (24:37 - 27:48) Pro Move of the Week: Ask This Simple Question APD Pro Move:Ask your kids, "What do you think about ______?" with no planned response. When Joanna was in fifth grade, her teacher passed out a pamphlet to everyone in the class. On that pamphlet were all kinds of topics about puberty and sex, and it had a phone number that you could call to listen to pre-recorded information on every subject. In all honesty, there were lots of terms and phrases on that pamphlet that she had never heard of before! This led to Joanna's mom giving her “The Talk.” If you remember back to your own "talk", your parents may have been open, honest, and informative; or maybe they felt awkward, and you walked away with more questions than answers. Now that you are a parent, you may be wishing for some sort of manual or coach to lead the way as you prepare to broach this topic with your own children. That's why we are so happy to welcome back Jim Burns to the show. Jim is the president of HomeWord, an amazing ministry that equips parents to build God-honoring families for generations. He's also the author of several books, including his latest, A Student's Guide to Sexual Integrity: God's Plan for Sex and Your Body. This book tackles the sensitive issues of sexuality for kids in today's confusing culture. In this episode, Jim shares :Why it's important to have more than one "Talk"How to overcome the barriers around starting these conversationsPractical tips for helping our kids navigate sexualityAnd much more!We hope this episode is a helpful resource as you navigate the discussion on sexuality!Show Notes: https://growinghometogether.com/jim-burns-103/

In this stage of life with our middle schooler, it is pretty clear what our job description is as his parents. He needs us to provide clean clothes, food in the fridge, some help with his homework, drive him everywhere, and pay for his schooling and extracurriculars. We are his biggest cheerleaders and guides as he is doing this work of growing up.But things aren't so clear when it comes to our adult children. We are having to tear up that old job description and learn a whole new way of relating and supporting them. Today's guest knows all about this and often says that “the transition is complicated, often messy, and can sometimes feel like you are walking on eggshells.”Jim Burns is the president of HomeWord and the author of several popular books, including Doing Life With Your Adult Children. He and his wife, Cathy, reside in Southern California and have three grown daughters and four grandchildren. In this episode, Jim shares :Strategies for redefining your relationship with adult childrenThe danger of offering unsolicited adviceTips for the child who resists launchingAnd much more!We hope this episode is a helpful resource as you navigate this season of parenting!Show Notes: growinghometogether.com/jim-burns-99

That planning in advance really helped with the empty nest syndrome.” -Dr. Jim Burns “American adults at 50+ tend to be very lonely people. In fact, there's a lot of studies on this and it's because they don't have replenishing relationships. You know, one of the best phrases that I have in my head on this is, a you know, successful and a well lived life is never accidental. And that takes time.” -Dr. Jim Burns “If we are always giving our kids advice, which we have been pretty good at for 20 of their years, that advice can be taken as criticism. Even if it's good advice! What they see is that you don't trust them to be an adult.” -Dr. Jim Burns “What we have to understand as parents, just like when they were five, is that the experience is a better teacher than advice. So you can say to your kid, "Don't touch that fire." But they're gonna touch the fire sometime and then they'll quit touching the fire because they did it one time and it burnt. But it's really hard for us as parents to trust them to learn from their own experiences.” -Dr. Jim Burns “As a parent, the question we have to ask is, are we helping or are we enabling dependency? And a lot of parents I think are enabling dependency as in, they mean to help. But sometimes we're enabling dependency and doing that in a way that doesn't help.” - Dr. Jim Burns Jim's Links Website: www.homeword.com Facebook: @JimBurns Twitter: @DrJimBurns Instagram: @drjimburns YouTube: @homewordtoday Books & Resources Mentioned in This Episode Homeward New Life Live Dr. Burns Books: Finding Joy in the Empty Nest, Life with Your Adult Children Dr. Burns on Jen Hatmaker in 2018 Connect with Jen! One of the important aspects of our lives is changing the trajectory of our families. Adolescence is a new phase, even for us as parents. One of the biggest things for the teen years is to help them make responsible decisions. Your decision today will affect you for the rest of your life. Each kid is different, and each kid will react and handle things differently. I need to show love to my kids even when I don't think they are making the wisest decisions.
Adam Griffin, Chelsea Griffin, and Cassie Bryant are joined by Jim Burns to discuss how we can navigate our role as a parent changing as our kids get older.Questions Covered in This Episode:Could you tell us a little about your family and your ministry?Do you find a lot of young families asking you about how to prevent failure to launch, walking away from their faith, or walking away from their family? How does the fact that “we will spend more time as a parent of an adult child than we will as the parent of a young child and adolescent” change the way we think about raising our kids when they are still in our homes? You write about the role of a parent changing as your kids get older, how would you help parents navigate the role that grandparents should play in the life of their family? How does letting kids experience hurt and hardship help us reach our goals as parents? What wisdom do you have for parents who don't want to dwell on what could have been better? What if parents of young children are having conflict with their own parents that they don't want to let their kids be exposed to? Do you have any wisdom for situations like that? What role does “boundary setting” play in having healthy multigenerational relationships in our family? How can we encourage and bless our parents and our kids grandparents? What do you say to, or what encouragement do you have for the family who is dealing with grandparent conflict because they are discipling their family? What are some ways that we can pray for you?Guest Bio:Jim Burns is the president of HomeWord, which has four core values; Strong Marriages, Confident Parents, Empowered Kids, and Healthy Leaders.
