Ever had a difficult patient who seemed like more trouble than they were worth? It happens to all of us and it's not that the patient is bad, it's that we don't have the right processes in place to avoid customer related headaches. One of the biggest advantages of running a private, cash-based practice is the freedom to choose how you handle patient payments—including the ability to offer refunds strategically. In this episode, I share a real-world example where a refund could have prevented major headaches, negative reviews, and even a potential malpractice lawsuit. I also break down: Why refunding a patient's money is sometimes the best business decision How this flexibility helps protect your practice from bad faith disputes How refunds build long-term trust and improve your reputation If you're a physician considering a cash-based or direct-care practice, this episode will help you understand how having control over financial policies can protect your career and reduce liability. ---------------------------- Thanks for tuning in to the Digital Nomad Physician podcast! If you're a physician looking to build more freedom into your career—whether it's through starting a virtual practice, transitioning to a cash-based model, or exploring alternative careers—you'll find tons of resources on my website.

Patients and families are at the heart of everything we do and it's important they share their healthcare experiences with us. Their feedback helps improve our programs, services and the care we provide. We encourage people to speak with their care team. They can also share their feedback with our Patient Relations department, which listens and responds with privacy and respect, gathers information and follows up on patient or family concerns. There is also the Office of the Alberta Health Advocates through the Ministry of Health. It empowers Albertans to be effective advocates in their own health and healthcare, and provides support and advocates for a healthcare system that is responsive and accountable to the people being served. Joining the AHS Podcast to talk about their roles are: • Sharon Berry, Patient Concerns Officer & Executive Director, Patient Relations • Catherine Douglas, Health and Mental Health Advocate, Alberta Health.

Patients have been at the forefront of many of healthcare's most historic moments—not just as subjects, but also as catalysts for change. Some of today's advocates look to the early ACT UP years for inspiration; others turn to blueprints established by pioneers like Abbey Meyers or Kathy Guisti. In this episode, Keri McDonough, Lead, Advocacy and Patient Relations at Syneos Health, explores how certain patient advocate archetypes – the Caregiver, the Creator, the Citizen, the Magician, and the Rebel – have emerged over time and dig into how social determinants of health, politics of representation and even climate change will influence the advocates of the future. For more on advocacy, check out the following publications:How Patient Advocacy Connectivity Fuels Launch SuccessThe Changing Role of Patient AdvocacyNavigating Your Local Advocacy CommunityLike what you're hearing?
