This week we dive into the history and science behind Antarctica and question who made it out: Childs or MacReady? The Thing is a 100% PERFECT film. Grab your flamethrower and join in. About our guests:Peter Neff is a glaciologist and climate scientist working primarily to develop glacier ice core records of past climate, environmental conditions, and atmospheric chemistry. Peter's current research focuses on better understanding recent climate of changing coastal regions in West Antarctica, areas which play a large role in uncertainty for future projections of sea level rise. Peter is also working to capture the last 200-500 years of hydroclimate variability in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, through recovering and developing the southernmost annually-resolved ice core record in North America, from Mount Waddington in the Coast Mountains. Peter is also the Director of Field Research and Data for the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration (COLDEX), a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center that seeks to find the oldest possible ice core records of past climate preserved in Antarctica. Peter shares widely about ice core climate science via Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.Matthew Siegfried is a glaciologist who uses satellite remote sensing techniques in combination with field-based and airborne geophysical methods to understand physical processes of Earth's glaciers and ice sheets. He runs the Mines Glaciology Laboratory, where the team collects and synthesizes ground-, air-, and space-based datasets in an effort to span the spatial (centimeters to 100s of km) and temporal (minutes to centuries) on which these processes occur. He is particularly interested in processes at the ice-bed interface, which lies hidden beneath 10s to 1000s of meters of ice at the intersection between glaciology, hydrology, geology, microbiology, and oceanography. He strives to work with a diverse set of researchers to create a unique perspective on the role of subglacial processes within the larger global Earth system. As a polar scientist, Matt is also committed to maintaining an open discussion of the changing cryosphere, having collaborated with institutions ranging from local elementary schools to the U.S. State Department in an effort to facilitate our conversation about the local, regional, and global impacts of changes at the Earth's poles. Matt is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Geophysics at Colorado School of Mines and is affiliated faculty with the Hydrologic Science and Engineering Program and the Humanitarian Engineering Program.Daniella McCahey's primary research attempts to connect Antarctic geographies to greater world history. Her current book project examines the United Kingdom's 1955-1958 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, arguing that the way this project unfolded demonstrated a scientific community unable to cope with the twin pressures of decolonization and the Cold War. Dr. McCahey has broad interests and has authored/co-authored articles and scholarly book chapters on topics ranging from the media-savvy of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, to paleontology and popular culture in the 1990s, to pornography in Antarctic research stations. She is also conducting ongoing international collaborative research projects on the history of permafrost science and on the history of the British Empire's use of science in its Southern Ocean empire.

Join Ocean House owner, actor, and bestselling author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with New York Times bestselling authors Susannah Marren, Laura Zigman, and Dara Levan, who will be discussing their novels, new in paperback. About the Authors: Susannah Marren is the author of Between the Tides, A Palm Beach Wife, A Palm Beach Scandal, and Maribelle's Shadow. Susannah has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, and Marie Claire and has appeared on national television, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. Several of her titles have been optioned by Lifetime and HBO. She has served as a literary panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, as a judge for the International Emmys, and as Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at the JFK School of Government, Harvard. Her featured novel is Maribelle's Shadow. About Maribelle's Shadow: When her adored and impressive husband, Samuel, dies suddenly, the secrets and lies between Maribelle and her sisters rise to the surface. Compounding the anguish, the authenticity of their socially ambitious mother and lavish lifestyle of mansions, privilege, and couture clothes is thrown into doubt. Each sister realizes she must fend for herself as their carefully constructed image unravels. The pathway out is steep and worth any risk. Until the winner takes all. Laura Zigman is the author of six novels, including Small World, Separation Anxiety (which was optioned by Julianne Nicholson and the production company Wiip for a limited television series); Animal Husbandry (which was made into the movie Someone Like You, starring Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd), Dating Big Bird, Her, and Piece of Work. She has ghostwritten/collaborated on several works of non-fiction, including Eddie Izzard's New York Times bestseller, Believe Me; been a contributor to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Huffington Post; produced a popular online series of animated videos called Annoying Conversations; and was the recipient of a Yaddo residency. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she helps clients via Zoom, phone, and sometimes in person with their writing. Her featured novel is Small World. About Small World A year after her divorce, Joyce is settling into being single again. She likes her job archiving family photos and videos, and she's developed a secret comforting hobby: trolling the neighborhood social networking site, Small World, for posts that help solve life's easiest problems. When her older sister, Lydia, also divorced, calls to tell her she's moving back east from Los Angeles after almost thirty years away, Joyce invites Lydia to move into her Cambridge apartment. Temporarily. Just until she finds a place of her own. But their unlikely cohabitation—not helped by annoying new neighbors upstairs—turns out to be the post-divorce rebound relationship Joyce hadn't planned on. Instead of forging the bond she always dreamed of having with Lydia, their relationship frayed. They rarely discuss the loss of their sister, Eleanor, who was significantly disabled and died when she was only ten years old. When new revelations from their family's history come to light, will those secrets further split them apart or, of course, correct their connection for the future? Written with wry humor and keen sensitivity, Small World is a powerful novel of sisterhood and hope—a reminder that sometimes you must look back to move ahead. Dara Levan is the creator and host of Every Soul Has a Story, a podcast in which she interviews inspiring people from around the globe. Her calling to impact others began at the age of twelve in her hometown of North Miami Beach, Florida, when she interviewed the nursing home residents where her grandmother lived and wrote their stories. As an undergrad at Indiana University, Dara earned a BA in English and pursued a career in journalism but decided to pivot and return to South Florida to earn her MS in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dara stopped practicing speech therapy to return to full-time writing. Actively involved in her community, she is currently a board member of the Community Foundation of Broward and a board member of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation/Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Community Foundation of Broward. Dara served as a board member of the Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Broward County and Junior Achievement of South Florida. She is also a founding member of the Circle of Friends for the Alvin Sherman Library Research, Information, and Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University. Dara is a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association, Women's National Book Association, and the Authors Guild. Her featured novel is It Could Be Worse. About It Could Be Worse Mired in self-doubt and blind loyalty, Allegra Gil suspects her charmed life may be a gilded cage. She has a devoted husband, Benito, two loving children, a thriving therapy practice, and lifelong friends. But when a surprising discovery in a piano bench reveals a shocking family secret, Allegra questions everything she thought she knew about the two people who raised her. Was it true? Did her father, a respected pediatric neurosurgeon, harm instead of heal? And Allegra's mother—how much did she know? As the past threatens the present, Allegra plays the song of what was, what is, and what may never be in this “powerful and poignant story about letting go” (Jean Meltzer, international bestselling author of The Matzah Ball). Composed with the cadence of a waltz—up, up, down—through flashbacks to childhood memories in Miami and a music camp in Michigan, It Could Be Worse is a heartwarming, at times heart-wrenching, multigenerational story of a woman supported and embraced by many while shaken to the core by a few. “The gorgeous prose and raw, unflinching narrative both heal and inspire. A stunning debut.” (Samantha M. Bailey, USA Today and #1 international bestselling author of Woman on the Edge) For more information about the authors, please visit Susannah Marren, Laura Zigman, and Dara Levan. Our guest on this week's episode is David Correll, a research scientist with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Transportation and Logistics. This coming Monday, April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. Begun in 1970, this is a worldwide event designed to recognize the importance of preserving our environment. Due to its basic role of moving goods worldwide, our supply chains are among the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases. While we can't totally eliminate our environmental footprints, there are things we can do to lessen their impacts on the environment. Each year, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics produce a State of Supply Chain Sustainability report. Correll is the project lead for this ambitious research. He shares about the progress being made for sustainability with in supply chains. Members of the American Trucking Associations' (ATA) Women in Motion (WIM) group met with federal government leaders in Washington this week to advocate for policies that support women drivers and that will encourage recruitment and retention of more women in the industry. We look at the specific legislation they are promoting to improve the lives of women truckers. Freight company Yellow Corp. went out of business last year. It was one of the largest trucking companies to declare bankruptcy in history. Yellow blames its demise on contract negotiations with the Teamsters, while the union says the company spent more than it could afford to acquire other companies and expand. Regardless, the bankruptcy court has been selling off the company's remaining assets. We look at those assets and what other trucking firms have been buying them in order to expand their own operations at bargain prices. Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. On today's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Crouchy and Chris are still in the driving seat after a suspect Sidwell has been outed for pulling a sicky in order to hit the slopes. As they find themselves missing a wingman for the second podcast running, the lads thought it would only be right that they enlist the help of British F1 legend - Lando Norris. After taking some heat for his super safe driving tendencies over the past few weeks, Crouchy has called in some favours and got the team down to Mclaren's Technology Center to settle some scores. Not only do the lads get to sit down with Lando to find out what makes one of the UK's top athletes tick - from DJ'ing in Ibiza to video gaming with the lads - with a little bit of F1 thrown in for good measure. We also give a big thanks to Mclaren for allowing the big man to silence the haters and put himself behind the wheel with Lando so we could see how much of a brilliant, yet very safe and sensible driver he really is. And would what a trip to Mclaren be without a car XI? MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Nov 7th Publish Date: Nov 6th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Saturday, November 7th and Happy Birthday to MLB HOF Jim Kaat. ***JIM KAAT – 1965 WS Gm.5 Goes the Distance*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia Cobb gives thanks to veterans Smyrna's 'Her-story' Outlined in Lecture 'We can't get caught up in the noise,' Cupid says at fundraiser All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb gives thanks to veterans East Cobb Park hosted the "Give Thanks" veteran appreciation celebration, organized by United Military Care and the Aviation History and Technology Center. The event aimed to foster appreciation for veterans from various conflicts and educate younger community members about the importance of Veterans Day. Veterans from Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq were present. Activities included live music, children's booklets about the military, scavenger hunts, and bounce houses designed like an aircraft carrier and a tank. An F-4 Phantom jet fighter cockpit simulator provided by the Aviation History and Technology Center allowed visitors to experience flying an aircraft using instruments. STORY 2: Smyrna's 'Her-story' Outlined in Lecture Local historians in Smyrna, Georgia, highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of women in the city's history. Women in the 19th and 20th centuries in Smyrna faced the "separate spheres philosophy," which limited their roles in society. Despite these constraints, women played significant roles in civic, educational, and philanthropic life. The historians shared stories of notable women, such as civic activist Lena Mae Green, Smyrna's first female mayor Lorena Pace Pruitt, and civil rights proponent Fanny Williams. A significant challenge in documenting women's contributions is the lack of recorded information about them, especially Black women. The event aimed to celebrate these women's stories and contributions to the community. STORY 3: 'We can't get caught up in the noise,' Cupid says at fundraiser A campaign fundraiser for Lisa Cupid, the Chair of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, was hosted by Marietta attorney Justin O'Dell. The event aimed to garner support for Cupid's re-election campaign, scheduled for a year later. With Cobb County trending Democratic in recent years, Cupid, a Democrat, is in a favorable position. However, she already faces a Republican challenger, realtor Kay Morgan. Political scientist Kerwin Swint noted that Republican opponents would need to focus on powerful issues, raise significant funds, and mobilize their base effectively to challenge Cupid. Cupid's tenure as chair has seen her prioritize governance for the entire county, with a strong credit rating and sound management. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – DAYCO STORY 4: Cobb Officials Discuss Tackling Opioid Crisis Cobb County has seen 145 fatal drug overdoses since October 2022, attributed to the presence of fentanyl in various drugs, leading to the creation of dangerous "designer drugs." Fentanyl is being mixed with substances like marijuana and pressed pills to enhance the high, but it can have fatal consequences. Experts warn that even small amounts of fentanyl can be deadly, particularly for those not accustomed to opiates. A significant concern is the combination of fentanyl with stimulants like meth. The county is working on harm reduction initiatives, including the distribution of Dispose RX and the introduction of CARES teams, which provide support and naloxone to individuals struggling with addiction. STORY 5: Austell Hopes to 'Breathe New Life' Into Former Mill The city of Austell is planning to redevelop the Threadmill Complex, a former mill site owned by the city, into a mixed-use development featuring housing, shops, restaurants, park space, and offices. Austell is seeking proposals from developers for the site, with a focus on creating a live, work, and play environment, including housing options that cater to young professionals, families, and seniors. The city hopes that the redevelopment will help address the issue of food deserts in the area and stimulate economic activity, making the complex a "self-sustaining economic engine" that can attract businesses such as grocery stores. The city aims to turn the complex into a "vibrant, multifunctional community hub." We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 8 STORY 6: Apple iPhone-maker Foxconn sees solid holiday demand despite October sales dip Apple's shares showed only a slight increase in pre-market trading following Foxconn's announcement that it would stick to its full-year forecasts despite a surprise dip in October sales. Foxconn, a major player in Apple's supply chain, saw a 4.6% drop in October revenues. However, it is anticipating a boost in demand from upcoming events like "Singles Day" in China and Black Friday in the U.S. Apple had recently released a holiday revenue forecast that fell short of Wall Street expectations, and its latest quarterly earnings showed a decline in Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch sales, although iPhone sales were up. The weaker U.S. dollar negatively impacted Apple's China sales. STORY 7: Cobb Drug Treatment Court Celebrates 20 Years of Changing Lives Cobb County's Drug Treatment Court celebrated its 20th anniversary with a message that it is an effective program that helps people overcome substance use disorders rather than throw them away. The court provides an 18 to 24-month drug treatment option as an alternative to incarceration. To graduate, participants must achieve a 90-day clean screen, meet treatment and case management requirements, give back through community service, secure housing, and gainful employment. The program has helped numerous individuals overcome addiction and restore their lives, as it focuses on health, family, and relationship restoration. The 20-year anniversary event highlighted the court's positive impact. Break: Henssler :60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brad Hawkins, the project coordinator at the Aviation History & Technology Center. And guess what? Bill will be joining us next week! Brad and I delved into the legacy of Charles M. Dobbins, the local war hero behind Dobbins Air Force Base's name, as well as the pivotal role played by James Carmichael, one of Lockheed's first plant managers. So, stay tuned for an enlightening episode of Cobb Life, where we uncover the diverse stories and experiences within our vibrant community. BREAK: ESOG –– ELON – CU of GA Welcome back to Cobb Life. And now, let's hear from our guest, Brad Hawkins: ***HAWKINS 1*** That concludes the first segment of Cobb Life. On the other side of this break, we will hear part two of my conversation with Brad. We'll be right back. BREAK: DAYCO – INGLES 2 – POWERS Welcome back to Cobb Life! In this segment, Brad and I delve into the critical role the aviation industry played in the process of desegregation. We'll also explore Cobb County's remarkable transformation from an agricultural society to a vibrant suburban community. Additionally, we'll uncover some lesser-known facts about Charles M. Dobbins, the individual after whom Dobbins Air Force Base is named. And here is part of my conversation with Brad. ***HAWKINS 2*** And we'll be right back with closing comments after this. Recently Justin Hendrix caught up with Gus Hurwitz, a professor of law at the University of Nebraska and the director of the Governance and Technology Center. He's also the Director of Law and Economics Programs at the International Center for Law and Economics, a Portland based think tank that focuses on antitrust law and economics policy issues. Hurwitz told Hendrix he's leaving Nebraska at the end of the semester for a new position that is soon to be announced. The conversation covered a range of topics, from how to think about the relationship between technology and the law, how to get engineers to engage with ethical and legal concepts, the view of the coastal tech policy discourse from Hurwitz's vantage in the middle of the country, the role and politics of the Federal Trade Commission, and why he finds some inspiration in Frank Herbert's Dune.
What can I do? The simple question is the underlying premise of everything we do here. It's often the easiest one to help people answer for themselves, but from the outside, it's often the most imposing. All of which is why we keep coming back to it, and why I'm so excited about the fantastic new book, The Climate Action Handbook by Dr. Heidi Roop. Dr. Roop is the Director of the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership and an assistant professor of climate science and extension specialist at the University of Minnesota. She also serves as the Director of Knowledge Transfer for the NSF-funded COLDEX Science and Technology Center.Dr. Roop's research and extension programs have taken her from Antarctica to Minnesota, and they combine cutting-edge climate science and effective science communication to increase the use and integration of climate change information in decision-making at a whole range of scales, from city and state to national and international levels.Safe to say, I'm very into that and you're going to love her. If you've struggled to find a way to get involved in the climate fight, this book and this conversation are for you. -----------Have feedback or questions? In January 2023, the FTC announced a proposed rule that would ban noncompete agreements across most of the U.S. economy – a move President Biden lauded in his recent State of the Union address. While noncompete clauses have existed for centuries and have traditionally been regulated under state law, they have also become a focal point for the executive and legislative branches of late. The FTC's proposed rule represents a recent effort to shift enforcement, both substantively and procedurally. The proposed rule purports to rely on the Commission's "unfair methods of competition" (UMC) authority under Section 5 of the FTC Act. This is the first time in decades the FTC has sought to engage in a UMC rulemaking, and only the second time it has ever done so.Questions are already beginning to arise as to not only the substantive benefits of such a ban, but also the FTC's underlying authority to enact this rule. As a threshold matter, the FTC's ability to engage in UMC rulemaking is somewhat unclear – the statutory basis for this authority is hotly disputed and very likely to be challenged. The FTC's assertion that the rule would supersede contradictory state laws is also likely to draw challenges. Moreover, many have raised concerns that the proposed rule – which the FTC argues would immediately impact about 20% of the U.S. workforce – runs afoul of the major questions and nondelegation doctrines. Additionally, there are questions regarding how such a rule would ultimately impact employees, employers, and the workforce more broadly – in particular, whether such a ban is more likely to enhance or impair innovation. Our experts will discuss the genesis of the FTC's proposed ban on noncompete agreements, including the statutory and empirical evidence underpinning the rule, as well as what we can expect in the coming months and years as the FTC moves towards adopting and enforcing the rule.Introduction:Svetlana Gans, Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLPKeynote Address:Rahul Rao, Deputy Director, Bureau of Competition, Federal Trade CommissionPanel Discussion:Corbin Barthold, Internet Policy Counsel and Director of Appellate Litigation, TechFreedomDiana Furchtgott-Roth, Director, Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment and The Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow in Energy and Environmental Policy, The Heritage FoundationJustin (Gus) Hurwitz, Professor of Law and the Menard Director of the Nebraska Governance and Technology Center, University of Nebraska College of LawMatthew Sipe, Assistant Professor of Law, University of BaltimoreEvan Starr, Associate Professor, Robert H. What is your idea of a Black Superhero? Do you want to learn how to create your own dynamic episodes using Unity and Unreal Engine? These are the questions posed by Nubian media CEO Bernard Key.Bernard teaches K-12 students how virtual worlds in the metaverse are created by using a free curriculum behind most video game technology for summer youth programs.Nubian media fosters Community technology adoption to generate more black businesses. The program enlightens uplifts and educates our youth. and creates opportunities for disenfranchised technologists. He sees the gaps where we can build as a community to change the game. His works speak for themselves as many parents are advocating for virtual world development courses in every classroom. It is crucial for our youth to engage in positive social communities and understand how to engage with the opensea market, convert their artwork into NFT's and how to mint auctions to build commerce centers with customized engineering. I ask again What is your idea for a Black Superhero? Bernard Key, CEO, of Nubian Media, has been involved in the community and schools for over 20 years. As a consultant, he was one of the lead project managers responsible for deploying wireless technologies in Chicago schools in the nineties. Mr. Key implemented, designed, and deployed WIFI solutions for over 1700 public and private schools and community centers. His wireless infrastructure design is now a standard for all inner-city schools. As a result, students are not confined to the classroom, desk, or building. During project deployment, Mr. Key recognized the need to implement technology, engineering, science, and math in inner-city schools. Forward to today, in collaboration with publishing and media companies, Bernard is responsible for the development, building, and creation of content for STEM City USA and STEM City Chicago. As a result of his creativity and innovation, XR Today Magazine awarded STEM City USA “2022 Top Finalist for Best Metaverse Solution” and “Most Commented Metaverse Award”.Let us Welcome Bernard Key to the Follow The Brand Podcast Where we are building a 5 STAR Brand That People Will Follow!
