Which is worst? Too much ego in the workplace, not ENOUGH ego in the workplace, an inability to read the room and tune to the right level of ego needed for the moment? The answer is Yes. Ego can lead to self-deception and self-sabotage. Where humility is required, we often find exactly the opposite. We so often encounter (or embody) a total lack of awareness of how actions and behavior are perceived. In the workplace, especially as consultants, this is amplified by clients, context and environment. Getting it right is just not an easy thing to do. I asked my good friends to join me for a discussion the topic of ego. Watch as Phil Yanov, Whynde Kuehn, and Oliver Cronk help me sort it out. Please do indulge us and our egos. For this, our 60th episode and the end of Season 5, we have a record-setting 5 minutes of cold open... It definitely is worth it. Well, at least partially. In this episode: What does the word "ego" actually mean outside of a clinical context? What is too much or too little ego? How does one fine tune the ego for the situation? How do you know when ego is getting in the way of your objectives and how do you correct that? How do we hold ourselves accountable for our ego? Social media is a wonderful, terrible thing. It is a cosmos of tools that allow us to be our best or, perhaps more often, our worst. If we're a knucklehead in real life, Facebook can make us a louder knucklehead... For consulting professionals, the use of social media is typically career related or career-adjacent. Given there are so many ways to engage, given the sheer amount of noise, given our own proclivities to react emotionally to things we read, how does a professional get their message out while avoiding the combative social trap? I asked my friends Phil Yanov, Oliver Cronk and Whynde Kuehn what they thought. What are the right ways for professionals to leverage social media to connect, build a brand, share ideas, communicate and learn? In this episode: Why should a professional care at all about social media? What are some ways to avoid the social media conflict zone? How does one cut through the noise on the socials? What are some tips on maintaining equanimity while still engaging? What are some common pitfalls to avoid and useful tips to employ? There's some extra goodness in the outro. Hope you enjoy. What is an architect? What is architecture? In the business technology context, is architecture a profession? What do architects do? A quick Google search reveals an endless debate on these topics that's been raging for several decades. Let's add more fuel to that fire and stir that pot... This episode is the third in a mashup series on this topic that began with an episode of IASA Global's "The Argument" podcast hosted by Paul Preiss (https://youtu.be/A6Bli8FYXz0) and continued in an episode of Tanium's "Architect Tomorrow" podcast hosted by Oliver Cronk (https://youtu.be/e6Q5y2o6JWU). Check these out as they each have a thematic take on architecture! While I enjoy a good endless debate with smart people, I wanted to focus on the topic of Architecture through the lens of Consulting. Joining me is Phil Yanov, Oliver Cronk, Whynde Kuehn and Chris Potts. Chris is an internationally recognized enterprise architect and mentor for small and large businesses across industries. He's also the author of a number of business novels about change called The FruITion Triology (https://technicspub.com/the-fruition-series/). In this episode: Consulting is known as a profession. The work environment can be tough. It is often political and tiresome and exhausting. The work week can be a tough slog. However... the workplace can often be very funny. Or at least, worthy of mockery and parody. We set about trying to lighten the mood by taking a look at various tropes and memes about work in general and consulting in particular. The jokes are many and can often be NSFW. We selected a number of memes off of Instagram and discussed them, had a laugh, and tried to decipher whether there was any merit to the meme. Are they true? Are they exaggeration? Are they simply myth? I'm joined by Phil Yanov, Oliver Cronk and Whynde Kuehn. There is often a tendency for companies to prioritize action and delivery over planning and analysis. More "Deliver the widgets!" and less "What does our company actually do?" This can be seen in places where decision making is driven by technology and timelines instead of desired business outcomes, where the "How" and "When" is obsessed over while the "Why" is practically forgotten. But friends! It doesn't have to be this way! In the world of effective Business Architecture, understanding the "Why" actually enables and accelerates the "How" and the "When". In other words, if people on Project XYZ actually see and understand what the company does, why it does it, what business problem is being solved by their project and how the thing they're delivering helps move the entire enterprise toward its goals... well... things go faster, smoother, cheaper and end up better for everyone. My 100,000-foot view sounds easy. To dig into the right level of detail and understand Business Architecture, how it works and what it can really do, I turned to my smart friends Whynde Kuehn, Oliver Cronk and Phil Yanov. (By the way, Whynde is a globally recognized expert, consultant and educator in this space. A quick peek at her LinkedIn profile will give you the scoop...) In this Episode: What the heck IS Business Architecture anyway? How is it practiced? What are the methods and frameworks? What benefits does it provide? Who in the company should care? What are good examples of Business Architecture practice? What are bad ones? How does Business Architecture relate to Enterprise Architecture? Episode 44: The One About Ethics in Consulting

Consultants Saying Things

In our connected world of technology, the ways in which we engage with businesses and clients can have a big impact. And as we've seen with the ways in which our public and private data is used by companies like Meta, not all impacts are positive. Some are downright manipulative. How does a company or an employee or a consultant working with a client know how to operate with transparency and integrity? We know that certain industries have regulations that define what is acceptable and compel compliance (law, medicine, accounting). There are also voluntary standards and practices established by working groups and business consortiums that can serve as guides to ethical behavior. However, many industries and especially many different forms of consulting lack clearly articulated and codified ethical rules. Is it right or wrong to give or receive bribes (or dinners, or gifts) as part of doing business? Where are the guardrails in fudging timesheets? Is it okay to use user-data, given voluntarily or not, to target ads or shape opinion or manipulate thought? Even if these things are done for 'good' purposes or without ill intent? Beyond employees or corporate entities, there is an opportunity for those of us who advise and solve problems for our clients to be better Philosopher-Consultants and operate with virtue and integrity. But ethics can be complex issues, often culturally specific and rarely black or white. Tough scene for consultants to navigate. So I asked my friends Phil Yanov, Oliver Cronk, and Whynde Kuehn to chat with me about it. In this episode: What does it mean for a company or a person to act with virtue? What does it mean to be ethical? When are ethics clear? When are they ambiguous? What are the cultural contexts at play here? How does a person in a company navigate ethics? How does a consultant work ethically and advise clients ethically? How does an employee or consultant know that they're acting ethically? Add your thoughts to the conversation on LinkedIn or YouTube. Consultants often help clients think about complex problems with few easy answers. There are almost always trade-offs to be made, regulations to follow, expenses to incur all while trying to run a business and make a profit. One of the most complex issues involving tough decisions is around how best to utilize business (or national) resources in a manner that ensures the business (or nation) can continue to grow and thrive in a way that doesn't negatively impact everyone else. Are you an oil company looking at how you'll be in business in 40 years if no one is buying gasoline or oil-based plastics? What alternative product lines should you be looking at? Are you a search-engine giant that uses more electricity than some countries to power your data centers? How do you supply that business need without causing brownouts? Solar? Wind? Fusion? Are you a Northeastern Pennsylvania-based mid-size paper company that uses a lot of trees? Perhaps finding a way to make your product from fast-growing varieties like bamboo instead of old-growth oak is a good way to ensure your business can continue to make product into the future. Decisions... some forced by the State, some forced by shareholders, others just good business planning, others perhaps totally altruistic. Sounds like an opportunity for a consultant looking to make a difference. I gathered my friends to discuss Sustainability and opportunities in that space. Along with Oliver Cronk, Whynde Kuehn and Phil Yanov, I was joined by Jonathan Gibbard who is a Business Unit Director for Sustainable Infrastructure & Operations at Ricardo Energy & Environment in the UK. In this Episode: What do we really mean by Sustainability? What is driving companies to invest in Sustainable practices? What is the state of the Sustainable Consulting industry? Where are there career opportunities in this space for new or experienced consultants? What does a consulting engagement look like that deals with Sustainability? If I were to only read my LinkedIn feed, I'd think every industry is being disrupted all the time, every day... Is it The Great Rebalance? The Great Reshuffle? The Great Resignation? The Great Discontent? To read about it, companies are really struggling to find workers these days. Clearly there aren't enough people that want to work. We think that's just a load of codswallop. There was a recent LinkedIn News story about the consulting boom/bust job cycle that caught my eye. The story said that 2 in 3 consulting firms are short-staffed and 1 in 5 have to turn down work as a result. More than half said that recruiting and retention have become much harder this year. I wondered, is this because the firms didn't forecast demand correctly? Were they spooked by COVID and didn't plan recruiting properly? We know labor force participation in the US is declining... are consultants just dropping out of the workforce? Are people doing their own entrepreneurial thing? I wanted the input of my smart friends Phil Yanov, Whynde Kuehn and Oliver Cronk. In this episode: Is there really a shortage of consultants? Why might there be one? My mother told me not to talk to strangers. It turns out that it's not great advice for an adult. More talking with people outside of our circles leads us to better places. Kio Stark is the author of When Strangers Meet. She challenged herself and she challenges us to expand our circles and defy that advice we got as kids. Kio Stark is the author of When Strangers Meet, the novel Follow Me Down and the independent learning handbook Don’t Go Back to School. She writes, consults, teaches, and speaks around the world about stranger interactions, independent learning, and how people relate to technology. In other lives, Kio has worked in journalism, interactive advertising, community research, and game design. She has taught about stranger interactions and intimacy and technology and how we mistake technology for people at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. Is there an overriding Philosophy for IT Professionals? Does being in tech drive us toward Determinism or even Objectivism? We need a practical philosophy. Do the Ancient Greeks or Classical Roman Stoics have an answer? In this episode, we discuss the question and we look for answers in the Science Fiction of Isaac Asimov and others. Can we save Sarah Connor? Can we save ourselves? Can we act as a beneficial lever in the use of technology to lead to better lives? Can we achieve the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number? We explore the question and point towards some answers. We've got our friend and fellow podcaster, Chris Lockhart of Consultants Saying Things to bring some additional perspective. And, we tease the idea of a new cross-over with his podcast. You'll want to hear them both. One more reason to listen to the podcast, we've got a non-metaphorical use of the word "Luddite." I've got to believe no other podcast will bring that to you any time soon. It's a fun and free-ranging podcast where we explore the underpinnings of what it means to be in tech. Today, Scott Pfeiffer and Phil Yanov interview Donald Robertson, author of “How to Think Like a Roman Emperor” for the Tech After Five podcast. Let me say… we are both excited about this. Robertson’s book was one of our favorite reads of last year and Phil says he's read the book several times now. "What does that have to do with tech" you might ask. We think that tech, and IT specifically, is one of the fastest moving parts of our society. It’s really easy for us to be put in positions where we might find ourselves acting beyond the prescriptions of our ethical frameworks. How do we act nobly in uncertain situations? How do I execute my work and my communications with others with virtue? We think Stoicism (of the capital “S” sort) provides a useful scaffolding for decision making. In this episode, we explore that with Donald Robertson who starts the conversation off with a powerful premise. Stoicism is a mental martial art that allows us to defend ourselves against the outrage machine of social media. Our guest: Author and cognitive-behavioural psychotherapist, Donald Robertson. The world keep moving and that means there are a lot of people we know who now are interviewing for their job and being hired with all of their contact via video conference. Since we frequently hear from people about getting the first step accomplished, they get the interview, but don’t make it beyond that, we thought we’d offer some help. We brought in Carol Hamilton, an interview coach to talk about how we can be better at our interviews. We cover lots of video interview specific advice in this episode, but being great at a regular interview is useful, too. Here are some of the things we talk about in this session. 1. Do your research. 2. Know the whole company. 3. Think one step ahead. 4. Practice your answers 5. simplify 6. Know your strengths. 7. Know your limitations. 8. Beware of the “I’s” 9. Focus on the future Super Bonus: We end this episode with the best last interview question ever. Too many times we leave an interview and don’t know how we did/. If you learn how to ask this question and respond, you’ll never again leave an interview in the fog of war. You’ll know if you’re on the right path or not, guaranteed. Want to get your business some attention on mainstream media? Who can blame you? If you've got the kind of business that would benefit from exposure to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands or more people, then television is the most well established platform for that. Not every business is the kind that needs that kind of exposure, but many are. Maybe yours is. Personally, I've used my background as a tech expert to provide support for many TV news stories over the years. Many of them have been with Emmy award winning former TV news journalist, Tim Waller. The last 25 years of Tim's career have been spent in TV journalism. This year he decided it was time for him to do something new and he made the jump to helping people understand the business he has been part of for so long. Tim Waller has a passion for helping people and a lifetime of experience in TV news. Since we meet people and businesses at Tech After Five with great ideas that could benefit from more people knowing about them, we decided to grab Tim and ask him a few questions about how we can go about pitching our organizations to TV news. He starts off by telling us some of the things we definitely should NOT do: Don't pitch a story that the reporter can’t cover Don't bury the important idea in a pile of obfuscatory text Don’t be annoying We then go on to talk about some things you definitely should do: Make your story newsworthy (There are tricks to that.) - Make it now. - Make it big - Localize a national story - Make it targeted Give access to real people -Be prepared for that interview Bring your news to the front! - Sell it! - Have fun! - Be interesting! - Be dynamic! Tim offers lots of great tips and the episode is well worth a listen if you'd like to promote your organization using TV news shows. BONUS: We are going to do a follow up episode where Tim answers YOUR QUESTIONS about publicity! You can post your questions on Twitter @TechAfterFive, email them to us at podcast@ta5.com or leave them on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TechAfterFive. We will collect those questions and then produce a new episode with answers! Our guest: Tim Waller is an Emmy award-winning reporter-turned-PR guru who will tell great stories about you! Few people realize that a 140 year old business has a software development lab in Greenville, SC. Although they have a couple of hundred tech people all over the world, they’ve got fifty or so in Greenville, SC. In this episode of the Tech After Five podcast, we talk to Joel Davis of Follett School Solutions about how it came to be that there has been a group of Follett developers in Greenville for over 14 years. He also shares with us the beginnings of the DIY Conference, a conference organized by Follett employees to help them build skills and then pass them along to their far flung peers. Joel tells us how one of those presentations changed company culture. The internal success of the conference has led them to expand it, in part, to invite outsiders to join them as they talk about software development in their company. So, listen to the podcast, and be sure to sign up for the DIY Conference on May 1. The public session is from 1pm to 5pm with a break and then with additional evening sessions. It’s free and open to software development professionals that would like to meet some peers and learn about the day to day operations of real live developers. Atlas Local has both endured and grown and they continue to host a space that is beautiful, inspirational, and supportive. One of the features of this space are regular Zero Day meetings. You might think we're talking about cyber security gotchas, but you'd be exactly wrong. The founders of Atlas Local stole the concept of Zero Days from their hiking friends. Want to improve your networking? Go to better events. We wish we were kidding about that, but it's true that most networking events are so poorly designed that they yield no results at all. We do things differently at Tech After Five. For years we have given you a list of people who have registered for the event. Well, we're working on a new format and this episode talks about how to plan and execute your attendance at Tech After Five by using the list. Using our simple three step plan will help you get more out of any networking event. 1) Narrow Your Focus You can use the list to identify the contacts most likely to be meaningful for you as you build your network. Likely as not, there are more than you can actually talk to, so identify 5 or so that you would like to connect with. 2) Do Your Homework You might be great at "Cold Reads" but probably not. Why not be prepared before you get in the room. Research your Focus list on websites like LinkedIn before the event. You are more likely to be able to recognize them in the room and a quick review of their background might help you understand the ways in which you might be related or relatable. 3) Execute with Intention All of this is for nothing if you don't show up ready to be a connector. Be useful. Be helpful. Ask great questions. Follow up like nobody else. Most people are pretty bad at networking. It's going to be easy for you to distinguish yourself. But you've got to network like you mean it. This is a bonus episode of the Tech After Five podcast. I was dragging myself through O'hare when I briefly looked up and saw a facial recognition camera. "I bet I look like crap" I thought to myself. But then I wondered. Would the algorithms know that I was exhausted and worn down? Or would they just assume I look like crap all the time? I decided to get to the bottom of it. I called up my smart friends and asked them, "Who do we know that knows all about Deep Learning and AI?" All signs pointed to writer and expert, James Kobielus. James joins myself, Phil Yanov and Bill Bensing to answer our questions and help us address some hot data topics. We talk about AI, Big Data, Deep Learning, Robotics, Chat Bots, Autonomous Cars, and really try to tackle the hype as well as answer some key questions: - What is Deep Learning? - Deep Learning's relationship with Machine Learning, AI, Big Data and Robotics. - Is it all just more vendor/consultant hype? - What are practical use cases for Deep Learning? - What do companies need skill wise to take advantage of it? - What does the future look like around this?
