Episode #16 of the Cine-Cast finds us talking about movies about talking! To begin, Associate Editor Ben Sachs and contributor John Dickson reflect on some new and old movies available to Chicagoans in early May before delving into MALMKROG, a divisive, 200-minute philosophical gabfest written and directed by Romanian New Wave stalwart Cristi Puiu and which has been available to stream on MUBI.com for the past month. (Ben also wrote about it for this week's Cine-List—see below.) Next, Ben joins contributors Scott Pfeiffer and Michael Glover Smith to discuss Éric Rohmer's final film cycle, the Tales of the Four Seasons, which was recently restored by Janus Films and has been available to rent through the Music Box Theatre for several weeks. This wide-ranging discussion addresses not only Rohmer's late period, but also his evolution as a filmmaker, his pioneering work as a film critic, his days as a schoolteacher, and his mysterious private life. Don't forget to read the Cinefile Cinelist every week at www.cinefile.info The introductory theme is by local film composer Ben Van Vlissingen. Find out more about his work here: www.benvanv.com

My mother told me not to talk to strangers. It turns out that it's not great advice for an adult. More talking with people outside of our circles leads us to better places. Kio Stark is the author of When Strangers Meet. She challenged herself and she challenges us to expand our circles and defy that advice we got as kids. Kio Stark is the author of When Strangers Meet, the novel Follow Me Down and the independent learning handbook Don’t Go Back to School. Last month in Cine-File's Cine-List (www.cinefile.info), contributor Scott Pfeiffer recommended John Huston’s THE DEAD, thereby setting off a long, spirited email conversation about Huston's career between several of our writers. On Episode #13 of the Cine-Cast, we continue that conversation in audio form, as Pfeiffer, fellow contributors Edo Choi, John Dickson, and Marilyn Ferdinand, and Associate Editor Ben Sachs delve into Huston’s work, critical reception, and legacy. But first, Sachs and contributor Megan Fariello discuss a few recent online releases of note, focusing on one of our favorite new movies of the year, Ephraim Asili’s THE INHERITANCE (which is currently available for rent through the Gene Siskel Film Center).
On the inaugural episode, Cine-File managing editor Patrick Friel and associate editors Ben and Kat Sachs discuss the intent of the podcast, as well as their favorite screenings of the year thus far; Cine-File contributor JB Mabe reviews local experimental screenings happening in March; Kat interviews Cine-File contributor and Onion City Experimental Film & Video Festival (March 8-11) curator Emily Eddy; and contributors Michael Smith, Scott Pfeiffer and Kyle Cubr conduct a roundtable discussion about the 21st Annual Chicago European Union Film Festival at the Siskel Film Center (March 9-April 5). Special thanks to Andy Miles, owner of the invaluable Transistor shop and gallery in Andersonville, and producer of our podcast.
Richard sits down with Scott Pfeiffer, Strategist at Strategy Business Consulting, and co-host of the podcast Tech After 5. They discuss Scott’s Mastermind Networking group that is solo practitioners who are interested in building a tribe and in moving their solo practice business forward.Understanding that networking groups flourish by bringing together people with similar interests and similar problems. Is there an overriding Philosophy for IT Professionals? Does being in tech drive us toward Determinism or even Objectivism? We need a practical philosophy. Do the Ancient Greeks or Classical Roman Stoics have an answer? In this episode, we discuss the question and we look for answers in the Science Fiction of Isaac Asimov and others. Can we save Sarah Connor? Can we save ourselves? Can we act as a beneficial lever in the use of technology to lead to better lives? Can we achieve the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number? We explore the question and point towards some answers. We've got our friend and fellow podcaster, Chris Lockhart of Consultants Saying Things to bring some additional perspective. And, we tease the idea of a new cross-over with his podcast. You'll want to hear them both. One more reason to listen to the podcast, we've got a non-metaphorical use of the word "Luddite." I've got to believe no other podcast will bring that to you any time soon. It's a fun and free-ranging podcast where we explore the underpinnings of what it means to be in tech. Come listen, play, and think with us. We'd love to have you as part of the conversation. Gratitude is a powerful tool for changing our attitude and life. It can make small changes quickly and when practiced regularly it can reorient us to accomplishing more and finding contentment. This isn't just a feel good move. The idea of purposefully expressing gratitude in a specific way changes us. This idea has clear connections to the ancient Greek philosophers and the many famous practitioners of Stoic philosophy. Looking for a change in yourself. Today, Scott Pfeiffer and Phil Yanov interview Donald Robertson, author of “How to Think Like a Roman Emperor” for the Tech After Five podcast. Let me say… we are both excited about this. Robertson’s book was one of our favorite reads of last year and Phil says he's read the book several times now. "What does that have to do with tech" you might ask. We think that tech, and IT specifically, is one of the fastest moving parts of our society. It’s really easy for us to be put in positions where we might find ourselves acting beyond the prescriptions of our ethical frameworks. How do we act nobly in uncertain situations? How do I execute my work and my communications with others with virtue? We think Stoicism (of the capital “S” sort) provides a useful scaffolding for decision making. In this episode, we explore that with Donald Robertson who starts the conversation off with a powerful premise. Stoicism is a mental martial art that allows us to defend ourselves against the outrage machine of social media. Our guest: Author and cognitive-behavioural psychotherapist, Donald Robertson. We've got an exercise for you. It's time to rethink what comes next for you. How do you decide what you are going to carry with you? It can happen for lots of people in lots of ways, but right now, it's happened for everyone. Something big came along and mashed the reset button. It gave us a moment to think. We can reposition. We can approach what comes next from a different angle. Are we thinking about that? Have you decided how to repack that heavy backpack of skills, behaviors and attitudes you've been carrying around? Maybe you've stopped thinking about what doesn't work for you anymore. But, maybe, you are ready for some change. Maybe you are ready to drop the weight that is no longer meaningful to you and move quickly into the what's next. We've got some ideas on that. We open up with a some observations about the week with us and our clients. The tech industry is chugging along. Businesses are beginning to think about what comes next and how they go back to work. But, still, we've got lots of concerns. How do we handle that? Advice from the Top Next up, we grab some of the lessons from top industry executives and see how they are responding to a workforce that's largely at home. How do you keep up innovation when people aren't together? What happens when we mix personality types on video calls? How do we keep people working with each other and aligned with the company? Is Zoom Dead? Lastly, we talk about the recent changes in video conference tools and what's coming out next. Google and Facebook are not standing still while Zoom gobbles up the market. What comes next? Why should we care? Is it too early to get married to a platform? Are you on the Tech After Five mailing list? http://eepurl.com/KLhj Looking to connect with Carol Hamilton? We came across the blog post "It's Time To Build" by Marc Andreessen. He points out that we weren't prepared for a massive shock to our infrastructure. Why? We haven't been building resilience into our infrastructure. We are operating at max capacity almost all of the time. There is no buffer. Is now the time to build that buffer? We talk about that. Also, we talk about the test we might apply to figure out when is the right time for business to go back to work. The world keep moving and that means there are a lot of people we know who now are interviewing for their job and being hired with all of their contact via video conference. Since we frequently hear from people about getting the first step accomplished, they get the interview, but don’t make it beyond that, we thought we’d offer some help. We brought in Carol Hamilton, an interview coach to talk about how we can be better at our interviews. We cover lots of video interview specific advice in this episode, but being great at a regular interview is useful, too. Here are some of the things we talk about in this session. 1. Do your research. 2. Know the whole company. 3. Think one step ahead. 4. Practice your answers 5. simplify 6. Know your strengths. 7. Know your limitations. 8. Beware of the “I’s” 9. Focus on the future Super Bonus: We end this episode with the best last interview question ever. Too many times we leave an interview and don’t know how we did/. If you learn how to ask this question and respond, you’ll never again leave an interview in the fog of war. You’ll know if you’re on the right path or not, guaranteed. Small businesses are facing an unprecedented economic disruption due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The CARES Act, which contains $376 billion in relief for American workers and small businesses is a program with money to help during the disruption. How does the program work? How do we apply? What do we need to be careful about? We have questions, so we went to an expert for answers. We're answering your questions. In just a few weeks, Zoom has seen its user numbers expand rapidly as hospitals, schools and even governments use their online video conferencing service. Some schools have rolled it out to their entire student populations. As this software has approached near ubiquity, quite a number of security concerns have surfaced. Our group tries to make sense of these reports and incidents while offering some ideas about how to configure their software to minimize interruptions. We talk about Zoom, being safe online, it's alternatives, and the good we've done this week. There are some great tech executives who are "tonning it" on LinkedIn. They are making meaningful connections by first creating an entry point with social media and building up an audience that they can help. People willingly follow them and connect with them and that gives them more opportunities to create business relationships where problems are solved and money changes hands. This isn't a myth. It is happening. Now, what I want to know, is how can I use LinkedIn like the best of the best. We've got just the guy for that. Named one of the top sales voices on LinkedIn in 2019, Richard Bliss helps busy executives bring social media into their life in a way that it adds opportunities instead of sucking away time. We interview him and come away with a three step plan for creating an audience and then working with that audience to accomplish our business goals. This is social media that works. If you're ready to perform like the people at the top, then listen up and take some notes. In this episode you'll learn: Overcoming the three myths of social media How to avoid anger / fear / rejection cycle that leads to avoiding the benefits of LinkedIn connections The magic first week of new connections The magic hour for a new post How to avoid having LinkedIn throttle the visibility of your posts The three phases of LinkedIn Mastery Links we talk about in the episode: Connect with Richard Bliss on LinkedIn Top Voices: Sales 2019 LinkedIn program Previous Episode: Five LinkedIn Mistakes To Avoid Your hosts for this episode: Phil Yanov is the Founder and Lead Community Organizer of Tech After Five. In this episode: Many businesses have an advisory board. Many small businesses should have one but don’t. In this episode we expand the idea of an advisory board to include setting up one for yourself. You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers. Let’s figure out how you can go about setting up an advisory board for yourself. You'll be surprised at what you can learn by crystallizing your own thinking and asking good questions. You'll benefit from the accountability. You'll learn by hearing great ideas from serious people. Questions we cover in this episode: How many people should be on your board? What kinds of people / types do you want on your board (and who do you definitely not want on the board.) Identify the questions you’ve got for your board How often should you meet? What should the format of your meeting be? How many questions should you be considering for meeting? How should you compensate your advisory board members? What do member terms look like? How can you manage that effectively? Why do you want limited terms? What other things do you need to do to make your advisory board work for you? In this episode: So many times our important ideas are lost because we don’t know how to wield influence in our communications. Whether we are talking to a client, teammate or boss, it’s easy to lose power in our communications. Great ideas can be lost. Does influence matter? In this free ranging conversation with Carol Hamilton, we talk about the use of influence in conversation whether its one on one or one to many. We talk about why we think influence matters, how it’s lost and what are some of the tools we can use to help get our points across. Carol Hamilton is one of my favorite people on the planet and she gets to help people across the globe improve the delivery of their message. If you’re looking for someone to nurture your ideas into a stronger voice, then a conversation with her is definitely a best next step. Join Phil Yanov and Scott Pfeiffer as they tease out some great advice from Carol on communicating your ideas effectively. Some of the ideas in this podcast: Do the pre-work. Start with clarity Meet the audience at their need. Homework counts. Be prepared to think on the fly. (We tell you how to practice this.) Controlling your breath (and thus the pace) of your delivery. Preparing yourself for the stress of a critical delivery. Being good in the moment. How to talk to someone to and not at them. Keeping attention. Talking to engage. How to answer on the fly questions. (During or later?) Treating questions like gifts rather than interruptions and why this works Maximizing engagement How to avoid going to battle in conversation Watching body language Be the leader of the room, not just the topic Assuming the mantle of leadership during the conversation Speaking adult to adult, avoiding the pitfalls of power Be heard. The power of voice control. Pace your delivery. How to avoid bullying your audience. Do you feel like people don't know who you are? Do you feel like even people who do know you well can't tell their friends what you do? It may be that you haven't established a personal brand. After all, even your friends, colleagues, and even family can’t help you attract the customers, investors, or talent you need if they can’t even describe what you do. And strangers can’t help you or do business with you if your message is a muddled mess. But in our noisy, social media filled world, how can you be heard by the people who need you? The good news is, there is an audience that is completely ready to get you. There are people out there who need you ... even desperately. They just need to know how you can help them. In this episode of the Tech After Five podcast, Phil Yanov and Scott Pfeiffer riff about an article on personal branding. It's easy to get this wrong. It's also easy to start getting it right by following just a few of the ideas enclosed. The most important thing? Get started now. Let us talk to you about how. Want to get your business some attention on mainstream media? Who can blame you? If you've got the kind of business that would benefit from exposure to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands or more people, then television is the most well established platform for that. Not every business is the kind that needs that kind of exposure, but many are. Maybe yours is. Personally, I've used my background as a tech expert to provide support for many TV news stories over the years. Many of them have been with Emmy award winning former TV news journalist, Tim Waller. The last 25 years of Tim's career have been spent in TV journalism. This year he decided it was time for him to do something new and he made the jump to helping people understand the business he has been part of for so long. Tim Waller has a passion for helping people and a lifetime of experience in TV news. Since we meet people and businesses at Tech After Five with great ideas that could benefit from more people knowing about them, we decided to grab Tim and ask him a few questions about how we can go about pitching our organizations to TV news. He starts off by telling us some of the things we definitely should NOT do: Don't pitch a story that the reporter can’t cover Don't bury the important idea in a pile of obfuscatory text Don’t be annoying We then go on to talk about some things you definitely should do: Make your story newsworthy (There are tricks to that.) - Make it now. - Make it big - Localize a national story - Make it targeted Give access to real people -Be prepared for that interview Bring your news to the front! - Sell it! - Have fun! - Be interesting! - Be dynamic! Tim offers lots of great tips and the episode is well worth a listen if you'd like to promote your organization using TV news shows. BONUS: We are going to do a follow up episode where Tim answers YOUR QUESTIONS about publicity! You can post your questions on Twitter @TechAfterFive, email them to us at podcast@ta5.com or leave them on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TechAfterFive. We will collect those questions and then produce a new episode with answers! Our guest: Tim Waller is an Emmy award-winning reporter-turned-PR guru who will tell great stories about you! Few people realize that a 140 year old business has a software development lab in Greenville, SC. Although they have a couple of hundred tech people all over the world, they’ve got fifty or so in Greenville, SC. In this episode of the Tech After Five podcast, we talk to Joel Davis of Follett School Solutions about how it came to be that there has been a group of Follett developers in Greenville for over 14 years. He also shares with us the beginnings of the DIY Conference, a conference organized by Follett employees to help them build skills and then pass them along to their far flung peers. Joel tells us how one of those presentations changed company culture. The internal success of the conference has led them to expand it, in part, to invite outsiders to join them as they talk about software development in their company. One of my favorite CoWorking spaces to visit is Atlas Local. There is a really special sense of community in this location. It's the people, of course. That doesn't happen by accident. Atlas Local has both endured and grown and they continue to host a space that is beautiful, inspirational, and supportive. One of the features of this space are regular Zero Day meetings. You might think we're talking about cyber security gotchas, but you'd be exactly wrong. The founders of Atlas Local stole the concept of Zero Days from their hiking friends. Listen as Chris Merritt explains the philosophy of their coworking space and how that has led them to host yet another Greenville Grok conference. They want to Make Great Internet and want to find other people who share that goal and join in a conversation with them. Check out Chris, Atlas Local and the upcoming Greenville Grok conference! Our Guest: Chris Merritt is a Project Manager at Faculty, Managing Partner at Atlas Local and one of the organizers of Greenville Grok. Want to improve your networking? Go to better events. We wish we were kidding about that, but it's true that most networking events are so poorly designed that they yield no results at all. We do things differently at Tech After Five. For years we have given you a list of people who have registered for the event. Well, we're working on a new format and this episode talks about how to plan and execute your attendance at Tech After Five by using the list. Using our simple three step plan will help you get more out of any networking event. 1) Narrow Your Focus You can use the list to identify the contacts most likely to be meaningful for you as you build your network. Likely as not, there are more than you can actually talk to, so identify 5 or so that you would like to connect with. 2) Do Your Homework You might be great at "Cold Reads" but probably not. Why not be prepared before you get in the room. Research your Focus list on websites like LinkedIn before the event. You are more likely to be able to recognize them in the room and a quick review of their background might help you understand the ways in which you might be related or relatable. 3) Execute with Intention All of this is for nothing if you don't show up ready to be a connector. Be useful. Be helpful. Ask great questions. Follow up like nobody else. Most people are pretty bad at networking. It's going to be easy for you to distinguish yourself. But you've got to network like you mean it. This is a bonus episode of the Tech After Five podcast. Phil Yanov and Scott Pfeiffer talk to Harold Hughes about his Startup Bandwagon. Bandwagon brings blockchain to bear on tickets for sporting events. Their system allows teams to know who is in the seats, creating a better experience and offering a path to reduce ticket fraud for sporting and musical events. Harold talks about his jump from a corporate gig into the world of startups and fundraising. They have just begun a crowdfunding equity campaign and talk about the challenges of getting that started. We talk about pivots and how does the startup know when is the right time. He talks about getting his first investors via social media. And we ask him how he has been so successful in getting the publicity his startup needed to build community support. Learn more about Bandwagon on Twitter @OneBandWagonFan. Find us at @TechAfterFive.
