In this episode we speak with Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness core faculty, Jack Bagby about his engagement with the philosophy of music, from Socrates, to Schopenhauer, and Bergson. We discuss Jack's recent PCC class called The Philosophy of Music and the Attunement of the Soul and dive into the complex ideas of these thinkers regarding the transformative powers of music. Jack explains how the ancient Greek's developed a complex set of tuning systems and alternative temperaments with powerful attributes and psychic properties, in which one can attune themselves to through the development of an affective psychology. Jack, and myself have been experimenting composing and improvising in these these modes and we share 3 pieces based on ancient Greek modes. PCC Forum with Jack Bagby: Tuning, Caring for, and Recollecting the Soul in Socrates' Swansongs Musical Compositions in the Episode by Jack Bagby and Jonathan Kay 1. A Paean of Apollo the Healer in Archytas' Dorian Diatonic 2. Ptolemy soft diatonic 3. A prelude to the compromises of universality. Ptolemy's Even Diatonic John (Jack) Bagby received his PhD. in philosophy from Boston College in 2021, and a B.A. in philosophy and ancient Greek language, from the Pennsylvania State University in 2013. Professor Bagby conducts research on the history of philosophy, focusing on problems related to consciousness, nature, and evolution. He has published in Epoché and Journal for the British Society of Phenomenology, on ancient Greek philosophy and phenomenology (especially Henri Bergson) and has strong research interests in Baruch Spinoza, 19th-20th century European philosophy, process philosophy, philosophy of music, and aesthetics. He is currently working on a translation of Bergson's 1902-3 Lectures at the Collège de France The History of The Idea of Time (Bloomsbury Press), and finishing up the manuscript of his monograph Integrals of Experience: Aristotle and Bergson. When thinking about complex concepts or solving textual problems, Jack loves to construct diagrams and concept maps. Between 2016-2018 he combined his love for creating visualizations with his love of Spinoza to create a website that maps the complex textual citations used in his magnum opus, the Ethics. We are so inspired by the wisdom and knowledge we gained from Aaron Miller in this week's interview. Dr. Miller is the epitome of a diverse musician, he has studied under classical and jazz teachers, earned a doctorate degree from Northwestern University, and has toured around with many jazz greats including Kobie Watkins, the Glenn Miller orchestra, and Joe Levano. Miller is now the department head for jazz studies and bass at Brigham Young University-Idaho. In the interview Miller depicts his life, and how people can relate his experiences to the lifestyle of classical and jazz careers. We also learn about taking difficult out of our vocabulary, what to get out of each practice session, changing the way we think about the entire industry. We hope you enjoy!! Composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, artist and co-founder of Los Angeles' artist collective The Echo Society, Rob Simonsen has contributed to almost a hundred film and television soundtracks in the two decades since he was first asked to provide piano solos to a movie made by high school friends. Having developed a presence in the Portland independent circuit with his first formal commission, Westender (2003), he was invited to assist veteran composer Mychael Danna, and in 2004 relocated to Los Angeles, where he contributed music to Danna's Academy® Award-winning score for 2012's Life of Pi, as well as Surf's Up (2007), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), and Moneyball(2011). He and Danna also co-scored (500) Days of Summer in 2009, helping to establish Simonsen as a sought-after talent in his own right. Since then, Simonsen's composed music for 2015's The Age of Adaline – for which he co-wrote the end credits theme – in addition to a slew of other films, including The Spectacular Now (2013), The Foxcatcher (2015), Tully (2018), Love, Simon (2018) and Captive State (2019). In addition, Simonsen launched his solo artist career in 2019 with his debut full-length album, Reveries, for Sony Masterworks. Toward the end, we also discuss if artists can also have a saying on human nature. And we finish by talking a bit about modernist and postmodernist art, and if they really ruined the artistic enterprise. Tim McTague of Underoath, joins today to discuss the philosophy behind music and art. What music is art or not, and is it ok to call a song not good or not even art? How does having a live audience effect the way music is received and experienced, whether through altering the music itself, engaging with the crowd, or encouraging participation to create energy and vibe? Does that make live music more important or more of an art than recorded music?   Links and Sponsors: breakitdownpod.com emerymusic.com http://bswusa.com/ code DOWN for 10% off http://underoath777.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. More at http://philosophytalk.org/shows/philosophy-music. Most people enjoy music daily and have strong listening preferences. Music – along with love – is often thought of as a universal language. But what makes a collection of sounds a piece of music as opposed to just noise? Can music teach us anything? And is the value of music objective? John and Ken explore what philosophy has to tell us about music – and vice versa – with Peter Kivy from Rutgers University, author of "Sounding Off: Eleven Essays in the Philosophy of Music."
