In this episode, Jason and Alex tackle some probing listener questions. They return to a theme from previous episodes (especially the previous episode with Marcel Dirsus): whether today's autocratic regimes (China, Russia, Iran) are actually as strong as they appear or might be weaker than we imagine. In response to multiple listen questions on this theme, Alex and Jason debate the cultural and economic missteps of the center-left and the importance of addressing real voter concerns about the pace of social and culture change in the face of rising populism. Then the Disorder programme pushes out the envelope a bit exploring: the significance of secrecy in intelligence and diplomacy, the political realignment of blue-collar workers, and the looming threat of a cryptocurrency bubble. We've run out of Clint Eastwood movies that fit our weird criteria, and now we're gonna talk about what we've learned from this whole endeavor. Where we are on Clint, on the auteur theory, on thinking about film, on thinking about political art, on each other, on the prospect of ever doing anything - it's all here for your inspection, dear listener. Oh and also we reveal what we're doing next! We're very excited about it and we hope you will be, too. Here's a hint: I'm going to start reading the Bible. We can't thank you all enough for joining us through the Clint Eastwood ouvre. Your support, however worrisome to your friends and family, has meant a ton to us. We set out to make a podcast that we'd like to listen to, and it turned out that whatever's wrong with us has been afflicting other people too. Thank you to all the friends we've made through doing the show, thank you to the brave listeners who simply download episodes and leave us alone about it, thank you to the folks who support us on Patreon, thank you to the clearly more mentally stable folks who don't do that, and thank you to the handful of dangerous freaks who send us too many emails. We love you all. We'd also like to say a huge thank you to all the unbelievable guests who have joined us over the past year and change. You made us feel like real boys and you made the show a lot better, too. Virginia voters make it clear people are not happy with hard left politics https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/03/us/politics/democrats-virginia-governor-race.html "The menacing thunder couldn't get much louder for Democrats. Few in the party had high hopes that their era of rule in Washington would last beyond the midterm elections next year. But the Republican resurgence on Tuesday in Virginia — a state that President Biden won by 10 percentage points last year — and surprising strength in solidly blue New Jersey offer a vivid warning of the storm clouds gathering as Democrats look warily to the horizon."–By Lisa Lerer for NY Times

In this episode, we talk about left politics in country music with Prof. Mark Allan Jackson. Country music has a huge popular following and has been closely associated with Republican and socially conservative political forces. Politicians like George Wallace, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan have all appealed to country's fans to build their political bases. But country music has also had a populist left appeal as well. From Nashville to Bakersfield, CA, country musicians have espoused progressive political positions as well in lyrics and activism. Scott and Bob, with Professor Jackson, look at the cultural and political importance of country music and the artists. We get into how Nixon's southern strategy took Tricky Dick to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the outlaw politics of icons like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, the progressive politics of Dolly Parton, John Prine's career, the political activism of contemporary artists like the Chicks and Garth Brook's appeals for unity in today's divided political atmosphere. Mark Allan Jackson is a professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University. He teaches courses on American Literature, Popular Culture, Folklore, and American Song. In 2007, He published Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie. He is the editor of and a contributor to the essay collection The Honky Tonk on the Left: Progressive Thought in Country Music (2018). In this podcast we discuss the work of Murray Bookchin, relating it to the experiences and debates around municipalism and wider left political practices and theory. With our guests (Blair, Hilary and Kate) we focus the discussion on the recent edited collection of Bookchin's work: The Next Revolution: Popular Assemblies and the Promise of Direct Democracy (Verso), edited by Debbie Bookchin and Blair Taylor. Reflecting, but going beyond, the broad range of topics addressed by Bookchin in the book, we cover a lot of ground, such as the role of the state in left politics, sources of transformative change, 'reason', 'knowledge' and politics, popular democracy, the new municipalism in Barcelona and municipal socialism in 1980s London. **Blair Taylor** Program director of the Institute for Social Ecology, a popular education center for ecological scholarship and advocacy founded in 1974. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the New School for Social Research, and has written on U.S. social movements, contemporary far-right politics, political ecology, and the history of the left. His work has been featured in Les Temps Modernes, American Studies, and City: analysis of urban trends, culture, theory, policy, action. He is co-editor of the Murray Bookchin anthology The Next Revolution: Popular Assemblies and the Promise of Direct Democracy (Verso, 2014). He lives outside Seattle, Washington, and is active with West Sound Democratic Socialists of America. **Hilary Wainwright** Co-editor, Red Pepper: www.redpepper.org.uk (if you don't yet subscribe why not look at the RED PEPPER PAY-AS-YOU-FEEL SUBSCRIPTION? go to the website and click 'subscribe' for an unmissable offer) Fellow, Transnational Institute:www.tni.org

Left politics can win all over the country, not just in New York City and Chicago and LA – that's what Mike Lux says, he's a longtime strategist for the progressive movement and Democratic candidates, and his new book is “How to Democrat in the Age of Trump.” Katha Pollitt is not happy with leftists calling Trump a “fascist” – maybe there's a better term for his attacks on democracy, which have a lot in common with authoritarian leaders in Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Hungary, Poland, and other places. The foundation for all of them: austerity, pushed by the big banks and right-wing parties, which creates the economic anxiety that fuels racism and anti-immigrant sentiment.
