Finally, we discuss how we can move beyond the essentialist view of politics. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Aside from his 9-5 as a the Director of Learning Innovation and Technology at Brigham Young University Idaho, he coaches a teen mountain bike team, works out twice a day, takes his family on epic adventures, runs a personal YouTube channel and runs the business side of his wife's YouTube Channel. The conversation was really fun and I particularly enjoyed the parts about using exercise and struggle to relate to life and the deep dive into Artificial Intelligence.

Jennifer Roach is a licensed mental health counselor living in American Fork, Utah. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints four years ago after being in the Protestant church her whole life. She currently serves as a Gospel Doctrine teacher in her ward. Jennifer is the recipient of this year's "John Taylor Defender of the Faith" award and the BH Robert's Research Grant. Her research primarily focuses on issues that arise when sexual abuse happens in churches. Jennifer does a weekly podcast for FAIR Latter-day Saints that focuses on questions that arise about our faith from Evangelicals. She also teaches as an adjunct for Brigham Young University-Idaho. Highlights 01:50 Kurt introduces Jennifer Roach and her background as a therapist for sexual abuse. 03:30 Jennifer will speak on four specific claims pertaining to the Church and sexual abuse and seven things that the Church does to go above and beyond what most churches do to help and protect youth. 7:00 Jennifer addresses some of the biggest questions that people have. One big question that people have is, “Is there more sexual abuse in our church or not?” Sometimes the media twists things to make it seem that way. 8:30 Boy Scout records data on abuse. Jennifer reviewed and researched all these cases from the past 80 years and was able to find how cases the Church of Jesus Christ has compared to other churches. Around 5.6% of the abuse cases were Latter-day Saint related. 19:10 Why doesn't the Church do background checks? Jennifer explains the three issues with background checks. The issue of delayed disclosure. Most people don't disclose the abuse they received until they're in their 50s to 70s. Background checks are not thorough. It's not a deep dive into someone's past. It only shows convicted crimes but not accusations. It only covers the past 7 years. 29:30 The danger of telling people that someone has been background checked. We believe that means this person is squeaky clean and they can be trusted. It really means that they don't have convictions and they aren't on the sex offenders list but it does not mean they are safe. 32:20 Jennifer talks about the case from the previous year. The man passed the federal background check every year despite doing horrific things to his own children and none of it was on his record. 34:20 The Church's helpline. There have been a lot of claims accusing the Church's helpline of hiding abuse but if we look deeper into the case we find most of these claims are untrue. 38:00 Why do we need a helpline? It helps leaders know what to report. Each state's laws are different. The helpline helps bishops fulfill their legal responsibilities and get the correct help for the victim. 48:00 There are standard best practices when working with youth and the Church follows all of them. They are all in the handbook. Another concern is there isn't always a window in the bishop's office. However, a youth can take a parent, leader, or friend into the bishop's office. Debunking 4 Sexual Abuse Claims Related to the Church | An Interview with Jennifer Roach

It's in the handbook. 53:10 What is the Church doing that goes above and beyond those gold standard things in child protection? The helpline Disfellowshipping Gender specific leaders for young women The member number system Existing associations (go to church with your neighbors who know you) Being sustained Being called 1:10:50 How can we be better at detecting abuse that is currently going on? Gale Pooley - Economist and Author With so much at stake in the decisions we make, especially at the global, societal, and environmental levels, it can be easy to feel like our options and our resources are ever-diminishing. We are emotional creatures, and the narratives we embrace matter. Our guest today has spent years tracking some of the most important metrics on earth–things like literacy rates, access to food, and availability of medicine. Far from being an escapist framework to deny the existence of real-world problems, our conversation today left us with the feeling that we had just visited a refueling station, and we were now ready to jump back in to keep doing the hard work. So today, we'll consider the hopeful question:   Are we actually doing better than we think we are? A conversation with economist and author Gale Pooley, on this episode of Lead With a Question. By Adam Turteltaub Our colleagues expect to be treated like adults, and that should include the compliance training we assign them. CJ Wolf, a professor at Brigham Young University-Idaho and founder of Codermedschool.com, explains we need to embrace adult learning theory, which recognizes that adults learn differently than children. Making mistakes, for example, is particularly powerful. Good compliance training, consequently, should be less about telling them what they need to know and more about providing them with an opportunity to work through scenarios and make their errors in a safe classroom setting rather than out in the real world. He shares a host of similar good advice in this podcast and in the SCCE Creating Effective Compliance Training Workshop. Click below to hear other do's and don'ts to make your training more relevant: Do assess the effectiveness of the training. Be sure to include testing. Don't assess the effectiveness just once. See what employees remember several months later. Don't overload new employees on the first day. A lot of departments are throwing information at them.  Be judicious in terms of what you expect them to tackle right away, and what can wait until later. Do have a training plan based on your organization's risk. Don't give everyone the same training. Tailor based on their needs. Want to know more? Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored at the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Gala in Hollywood, California on April 28th. Her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38. Brittany's story was released last year in Volume 38 but she was unable to attend the awards event due to giving birth to her 5th child. More recently, Volume 38 was awarded the Ben Franklin Award for Best Science Fiction & Fantasy this year by the Independent Book Publishers Association at their conference which was held in San Diego, California on May 5th. Brittany grew up as the only girl in a family with four brothers. She's reversing that trend with her own children—three girls and one boy. In 2009, Brittany graduated with her RN from Brigham Young University-Idaho. She received her BSN in 2010. Brittany has worked in both medical/surgical and rehabilitation specialties, but she currently enjoys work as a stay-at-home-mom. Brittany started writing at a young age, penning poems and stories, and filling an overstuffed nightstand with spiral notebooks, pens, and floppy disks (yes, those were still a thing in 2007). But after entering college, Brittany lost touch with her writing and didn't come back to it for several years. After having her third child in 2015 and needing a creative outlet, her passion for writing reignited. Once she found the Writers of the Future Contest, Brittany has not missed a quarter and has been a Writers of the Future finalist three times. She was a Published Finalist last year entering in the contest her story, “Half-Breed,” appearing in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 37. As a winner this year, her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in Volume 38. Brittany lives with her husband and children near the Snake River in Idaho, where she swears it looks like a wintered Narnia for nearly half the year. She has many pairs of fuzzy socks. The Contest, one of the most prestigious illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. In the 39 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 547 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 34 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 394 winners. The past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,800 illustrations, 390 comic books, graced 700 books and albums with their art, and visually contributed to 68 television shows and 40 major movies. royalties. In his first term as California's governor, Jerry Brown famously said back in 1975, “There is no free lunch. This is an era of limits and we all had better get used to it. Small is beautiful.” Was Brown right? These days, it seems that establishment thinking and most of the content on mainstream media believes it is so. Threats from climate change, overpopulation, and environmental degradation, we are told, now force us to reduce consumption and limit growth in order to save the planet and ourselves. Wesley's guest in this edition of Humanize takes a radically different and far more optimistic view. Gale L. Pooley has co-authored a book entitled Super Abundance in which he and co-author Marian L. Tupy argue that contrary to the roaring pessimism about the human future so often espoused these days, our earthly resources are actually unlimited and indeed, that population increases and innovation are the keys to growing our prosperity and extending our freedoms. He served previously as the 15th president of Brigham Young University–Idaho from 2005 to 2015 and as the Harvard Business School (HBS) dean from 1995 to 2005. He was also the George F. The organisational linkages, or integration, required to accomplish innovation is a thread that runs through these studies. These insights culminated in his book with Carliss Baldwin, “Design Rules: The Power of Modularity,” which explores the rules for integrating components that shaped innovation in the computer industry and many others. He studied economics with Clay Christensen in the Fall of 1970 and became his dissertation advisor years later alongside Joe Bower. I am currently the co-founder of Robyn Laurél Haircare Products, a Certified Cosmetologist Educator, 8 years as a salon owner, and 6 years as an educator.  I love doing hair just as much as I love teaching, so merging the two passions was definitely a no brainer.  The goal is to bring unity to a diversified beauty industry.    Angelica's Mission My mission is to help you run your business and not let it run you.  Step into a CEO entrepreneurial game, and create the FINANCIAL FREEDOM for yourself. I am dedicated to to helping people get off the struggle bus and build an established business, restructure how they charge for services, build a system of continuous cash flow, work less and increase their income by following my developed blueprint through my signature program Charge Your Worth Academy. I know the struggle of building a successful business behind the chair and it could be lonely but I have built my successful business from the ground up with community!  No more doing business alone.    "TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE SO MUCH MORE"!!   Marisa Lonic is a keynote speaker, life & business coach, 3x author, top-rated podcast host and the founder of Mama Work It.  After spending nearly 15 years in corporate leadership positions, Marisa shifted gears to become a full-time Time Momager & Biz Momager. I am Beth.   I am an expert at working with the subconscious mind. I teach women how to release unprocessed emotions and reparent memories that are holding them back from their desire to live their best life in regards to their marriage, wealth and well-being. I am a Certified Hypnotist, Teacher of Psychology & Marriage Coach. I have appeared in major media publications such as MacClean's Magazine, CTV, the London Free Press and has been a guest on dozens of podcasts & blogs. I have spent many years studying the Law of Attraction, Law of Vibration, the conscious and subconscious mind, along with Neuroscience, Epigenetics, EFT (emotional freedom technique), and Energetics of Human Beings.   We have the power to change our brain. I took a deep dive into neuroscience when I experienced a brain bleed. The plasticity of the brain is why I can walk and write again. Through reinforcement of tasks and thoughts, I created new neural pathways. This same theory that works with the plasticity of the brain is the foundation of the Soulify Method, which has helped many women make incredible transformations within their relationships, wealth and well-being. I teach women how to become aligned and connected with their true self.   Once in alignment, they learn how to 100% trust their inner knowing, release old beliefs and stuck emotions. When the ingrained beliefs and unwanted emotions are out of the way, they instinctually take action and make decisions based on their intuition without fear and doubt. The result- they 100% manifest the relationships, wealth and well-being that they have always wanted into their lives. It was unbelievable! Literally, they create the life they dreamed of. It feels like magic (but it is rooted in science). Their desires start coming effortlessly, with such ease and flow once the blocks are out of the way.   And here I am ready to give you the powerful and profound tools to 100% shift your life & bring your wildest dreams to reality using the POWER of hypno-journeying. Motherhood does not mean sacrifice, it means embracing your new meaning of a caregiver, a love giver and a joy giver. It all starts with you and you are your priority.   About Kate Kripke:   Motherhood is one of the most profound human experiences—miraculous and life-changing. How to Grow a Recruitment Agency from Start-Up to $3M Profit in Two Years, with Emily Rushton, Ep #155

The Resilient Recruiter

In this episode, you will hear how Emily Rushton grew her recruitment agency from start-up to $1M in profit in its first year and is on track to reach $3M profit in its second year! What's her secret? There's a clue in her company's name - the keyword here is “integrated.” Emily is the Founder and CEO of Hire Integrated, a fast-growing recruiting agency based in Utah. They launched in January 2021 and in less than two years have scaled to a team of 20 employees. In this fun and informative conversation, Emily shared how specialized recruiting at scale and client integration were key to their success. She also shared how their proactive approach and continuous evolution give them a positive outlook despite challenging market conditions. Emily started her career in staffing at Robert Half where she ranked among the top 20 recruiters out of 11,000 employees. Since then she has built two other boutique firms and also recruited for Netflix, where she helped them write their now industry-leading playbook with best-in-class practices to help them find and hire new talent. Episode Outline and Highlights [04:33] “I didn't even know what a recruiter was” … How a willingness to cold call helped Emily land her first job at a recruitment agency. [09:20] How to excel during an economic downturn; the key mindset shift that enabled Emily becoming a top-producer during a recession. [12:53] Client Integration – what it means and why it's important. [16:50] Helping companies hire better: specialized hiring at scale. [20:14 Staring a recruitment business - how Emily won her first 3-4 clients. [23:30] Key milestones: hitting $1m in revenue by Q3, $1m in profit in 12 months and on track for $3m profit in year two.  [30:22] What industries does Hire Integrated specialize in?  [35:51] Service lines offered by Hire Integrated. [45:51] Emily's playbook for strategically developing client relationships. [52:52] How to build an account from a single point of contact to gaining access to multiple senior stakeholders. [55:27] The Hire Integrated approach - how to integrate successfully with client companies. [1:01:30] Emily's growth plans for 2023. Consistent Tenacity in Early Days Emily shared a fascinating story of how she got into recruiting - she had no idea what she wanted to be when she was about to graduate. Following her professor's advice, she started cold-calling companies to present her skillset in looking for a job. She was at a job fair and she shared what she was doing with a recruiter, which led to her discovering the career of recruitment.  From there, Emily started her career in staffing at Robert Half, where she ranked among the top 20 recruiters out of 11,000 employees. Interestingly, she started her career during the recession. Having an awareness that she could lose her job, she was determined that if it will happen, she will have no regrets knowing that she went all out.  “There was this level of tenacity that came out early on in my career. In every single opportunity I had, I didn't lose it. I held on to everything so tight and I made sure that I closed it. During that first recession that I ever worked, I made the most money in my career, I was a top performer.” This mindset of tenacity laid the foundation for Emily's career as a recruiter and ultimately led to her starting her own recruitment firm in 2021. Getting USD 1M in Profit in Their First Year When Emily made the decision to launch her own business, with her own money, she was committed to going “all in” to making it work.  Incredibly, Hire Integrated reached $1M in profit by the end of their first year.  Emily outlines the two critical things she ensured to have in place when starting Hire Integrated: Focusing on building the brand. Putting together an advisory board with thought leaders she can trust. They did not have any business during the first couple of months. Emily really focused on these two items making sure that the foundation is the first time right. In Q3, they were able to hit the USD 1M revenue. With the current market conditions, Emily still shows the same relentless tenacity as it was in the early days of her career. “With the current market conditions, we are proactively making some shifts to make sure that if we continue to shift, we are prepared to have our best years. Because we are so new, we have a lot of runways ahead of us.” Client Integration and Engagement   One key success factor in Hire Integration's successful trajectory is how they ensure that they understand their clients - offering the best long-term solutions possible. As Emily explains, “As we are putting together these proposals or having these conversations as they go higher and higher in the chain of command… it is hitting on the relevant pain points… We have been successful for a handful of those companies for making it up to chains of command and getting those proposals because we've listened, we've been more than a recruiter, we understand the evolution to where they are headed, and we put together very appropriate proposals that are going to help them get to where they are going faster.”   Many recruiters find it challenging to engage with the C-Suite, especially if they're currently dealing with in-house recruiters or mid level hiring managers. Emily shared her strategies and approach to how she reaches the senior stakeholders to present much higher value recruitment solutions.  Our Sponsors This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur. i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Topics include: - Respecting Our Spouse's Agency- Humility, Communication, and a Willingness to Change- Adjusting Our Perception of the Doctrine of Marriage and Sealing- Recognizing Personal Idols- Sacrifice and Letting the Lord into Your MarriageMckay Farner is originally from Colorado. He and Meghan dated in high school previous to his serving a mission in Bacolod Philippines. The two were engaged 5 days after he returned home, and were married three months later. Mckay graduated from Brigham Young University - Idaho with a degree in Communications, emphasis in Public Relations. Is it true that the world's rapidly growing population is consuming the planet's natural resources at an alarming rate that would require two Earths to satisfy the demand for natural resources by 2030? Marian Tupy and Gale Pooley found that resources became more abundant as the population grew. They also found that resource abundance increased faster than the population. On average, every additional human being created more value than he or she consumed. Shermer, Tupy, and Pooley discuss: why we long for the “good ol' days” • Malthusian trap • Ehrlich's predictions on overpopulation • the birth dearth • the Simon Abundance Index • compound interest • What does it mean for the economy to grow 2–3% a year? • accumulating wealth • what poorer countries need to do to become richer countries • running out of fossil fuels • Obama's “you didn't build that” speech • inflation • electric vehicles • How many people can the Earth sustain? • post-scarcity trekonomics • the future of religion and other social institutions in a superabundant world. Marian Tupy is the editor of HumanProgress.org, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, and coauthor of the Simon Abundance Index. He specializes in globalization and global well-being and the politics and economics of Europe and Southern Africa.
