This week, we take on armchair philosophers and discuss our own philosophies about magic. The best part about being witches is that we can have our own opinions, and everyone is right for themselves. Our collective reading this week comes from the Skele-Tarot deck, and we drew the Magician reversed. The nearest lunar phase to us comes on May 27th, which is the New Moon in Gemini. For the podcast's fifth anniversary, Eric Purdue joined me at Dark Star Magick in Portland, Oregon, for a live podcast recording. We had a live audience, livestreamed the conversation to YouTube, and overall had a really excellent time. Our conversation focused on his translation of Henry Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy, which was released in 2022. I wanted to find out more about the ongoing influence of his translation, and how it is reshaping the modern occult community.Eric Purdue is a practitioner of medieval astrology, and a santero (olorisha) in Lucumí/Santeria. He has studied metaphysics for over thirty years, with a particular focus on practical folk and astrological magic. His work on traditional talismanic magic appeared in the inaugural edition of The Ascendant (2014).Thanks to Dark Star Magick for hosting this event. While it may have been a crazy idea to host it on Halloween, Steve enthusiastically jumped on the idea and then trusted us to pull it off. I am very grateful that he sat in as the intermediary between our Internet audience and the live event. Dark Star Magick is an incredible occult bookstore, carrying new, used, and rare books. They ship all over the world, so be sure to check out their online shop.Live podcasts are a lot of work, and I couldn't have done this without the help of my brother Nick Arneson, and his audio/visual engineering skills. Holy water is *the* most foundational element in the Solomonic magician's repertoire: without it, you can't consecrate any of the ritual implements (or yourself) before or during a ritual. But how do you make it? Here is my own step-by-step method.______________STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE______________ 1.) Gather water at sunrise on the day and hour of Mercury (Wednesday) or on the day and hour of Sol (Sunday) in a glass or clay vessel (ideally at dawn, as David Rankine recommends in his upcoming tome from Hadean Press, ‘Claves Intelligentiarum'). As you gather the water, recite this from a French manuscript of the Key of Solomon: ‘O God, who art the truth and the life, deign to sanctify this water, which I need to use in my workings.' a. Bring the water back and filter the water if needed 2.) Prepare the water (first) and salt (second) using the A-B-C method from the Heptameron: a. (An Exorcism): “I exorcise thee, O thou creature of water/salt, by him by whom all things are made, that forthwith thou cast away every phantasm from thee, that it shall not be able to do any hurt in any thing.” b. (A Blessing): Bless, O Lord, this creature of water/salt, and sanctify it, that it may be blessed to set forth the praise of thy holy name, that no hurt may come to the Exorcisers or Spectators: through our Lord Jesus Christ, &c. c. A Commemoration of the water and/or salt, from the Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy. Use your own poetics, verses from the Bible and other inspired verse to honor the water/salt. 3.) Recite blessing of the salt from the Key of Solomon: TZABAOTH, MESSIACH, EMMANUEL, ELOHIM GIBOR, JEHOVAH. O God, who art the Truth and the Life, deign to bless and sanctify this creature of salt, to serve unto us for help, protection, and assistance in this art, experiment and operation, and may it be a succor unto us. 4.) Add salt to water and mix it, while reciting Psalms 102, 54, 6, and 51 as listed in the Key of Solomon. 5.) Recite a final blessing of both the salt and water once mixed, and store in a large glass vessel for later use as needed. ⇓ ⇓ ⇓ ► ✅Order David Rankine's ‘Claves Intelligentiarum'- https://hadean.press/products/claves-intelligentiarum ► ✅ Key of Solomon hyssop prayer: https://www.esotericarchives.com/solomon/ksol2.htm#chap11 ► ✅ Exorcism/Blessing formula in the Heptameron: https://www.esotericarchives.com/solomon/heptamer.htm#h670tomahawkwifiddr4 ✦

What is Qabalah? This is a scholarly exploration of Hermetic Qabalah, an esoteric tradition steeped in history and rich in spiritual practice. This detailed video presentation covers the evolution of Hermetic Qabalah from its origins in ancient Jewish mysticism through its adaptation in Christian and Renaissance thought to its pivotal role in contemporary Western esotericism. We start by defining Hermetic Qabalah and distinguishing it from Jewish Kabbalah and Christian Cabala, highlighting the unique blend of mysticism, philosophy, and theology that characterizes each form. Discover how figures like Giovanni Pico della Mirandola influenced the Christian reinterpretation of Kabbalistic ideas and how these ideas permeated Renaissance thought. The video further delves into the core structure of the Tree of Life, explaining its symbolic representation of the universe's spiritual and material aspects. Learn about the sefirot, the paths that connect them, and their implications for personal and spiritual development. We will also cover primary texts like the Zohar and Sepher Yetzirah, their historical significance, and their roles in the practice of Qabalah. Additionally, we explore the modern application of Hermetic Qabalah in traditions such as Thelema and its integration into practices like modern Witchcraft and the Golden Dawn system. On Thursday June 23rd, 2022 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will reappraise and read from the Hermetic classic "Three Books of Occult Philosophy" by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, first published in 1533 in Latin. This master work has been the foundation study of Hermetic science, Magick and mysticism for nearly 500 years. It is divided into three sections, or books: The Natural World, The Celestial World, and The Divine World. The first, The Natural World dealt with The Hermetic Elements, the second The influence of The Heavens, Stars and Planets upon human affairs and events and the third the Divine World, dealt with the spiritual sciences of Magick and Qabalah. Unfortunately many students get these volumes as a reference work. Agrippa intended it to be read and studied from beginning to end as one continuous and contiguous work. The Hermetic Elements of the Natural World are reflected in the Celestial World, and spiritually empowered and directed from The Divine World. We will demonstrate this with selected readings from the first Volume. We will be reading from the newly translated 1533 Latin edition from Inner Traditions translated by Eric Purdue. So if you want an old fashioned introduction to wizardry, tune and we'll start you on the path.

Our foray into historical texts like the "Four Books of Occult Philosophy" and the secrets of the Emerald Tablet offers a rich context for the modern mystic, inviting listeners to explore the archival depths where the roots of magic intertwine with the branches of knowledge. As the tarot's rich tapestry unfolds, we honor the visionary Pamela Colman Smith and the profound influence of decks like the Rider-Waite-Smith, Crowley's Thoth, and the classical Marseille. Reverend Erik L. Arneson's podcast Arnemancy covers all things occult and esoteric. This includes a nine-part series on Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and his influential 1531 text Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Almost 500 years later, it's still an influential text for many witches, wizards, and occultists. As Rev. Erik says, “If we want to understand Occult Philosophy, we first need to take a look at the world in which Agrippa lived. This episode will begin by looking at the Holy Roman Empire, where Agrippa was born and spent most of his life, and then examine a few key historical topics that are relevant to Agrippa and Occult Philosophy, including the Renaissance, the Reformation, [and] Science and Philosophy. Finally, this episode will give a general overview of Three Books of Occult Philosophy and outline a general plan for this series….” Listen to Rev. Rejoice, lovely listeners! In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Mat Dragonstone, astrologer, Tarot reader, astro-mage, all round nice guy. This is part two of our discussion on Agrippa, and you should definitely listen to part one on Mat's podcast before listening to this one.Our discussion begins with a conversation about two logical fallacies: the appeal to antiquity, and the appeal to novelty. We look at how these fallacies influenced Agrippa's work in Three Books of Occult Philosophy, but that's not all! We also discuss how these fallacies may be impacting today's magicians and practitioners, and then look at ways to mitigate the confusion and wrong-turns this appeal could take. This involves a discussion of post-modernism and Jaques Derrida, which Dr. Dragonstone is well-equipped to handle because his PhD is a real honest-to-gosh philosophy degree! This is a fascinating episode, and we only had mild internet troubles that I managed to almost completely edit around. The Numinous Podcast with Carmen Spagnola: Intuition, Spirituality and the Mystery of Life
Content Note: At the end of this episode, I mention "ritual scarification" – this material may remind people of the ritual abuse mentioned in a fairly recent television broadcast, The Vow, a show about the NXIVM cult. I am not talking about that. I am referring to a cultural practice of scarification, quite common with peoples of darker skin, and other instances where scarification is woven into society, (for instance, some LGBTQ+ communities and other examples). Today we're welcoming Eliza Robertson back for her third time on the show - she was here as part of Kosmic Tonic with Jasmine Richardson in 2020 when we discussed the key transits that would affect the second half of that wild year, and she was here again in 2022 talking about Writing with the Stars and Magic with the Muses. Clearly, she's a favourite conversation partner of mine and I'm delighted that she's the one to shepherd us through the gate as we begin a 7 part miniseries on Planetary Magic and Propitiation for the days of the week! Since about the time Eliza first appeared on the show in 2020, I have been taking a closer look at AstroMagic and paying more attention to cultivating relationships with the planets that rule the days of the week. I find it grounding, centering, resourcing and supportive. Over the next seven episodes we'll go deeper into relationship with each planet that rules that day of the week, beginning with Sunday and moving through the week to Saturday. This week, we are welcoming guest Reverend Erik of the Arnemancy podcast, on this the day of his solar return! Erik and I have recorded sister episodes on each other's respected podcasts on our thoughts surrounding the philosophy behind tarot reading. Get a behind the scenes peek at how your diviner friends learn to read and sus out meanings for the cards! Erik's method is a unique and innovative technique involving Renaissance philosophy, and the Art of Memory. How do stories, sounds, and smells allow us to better take hold of the opaque translucent nature of Memory? Is there any difference in how one learns the Majors vs the Pips? How is the imaginal playground informed by the sea of Eros? Isn't all magic just chaos magic anyway? All this plus laughs and jokes abound, in today's episode of SaturnVox. You can find out more on Erik, check out his instagram here, as well as his twitter here. You can also book a tarot reading with him on his website here. Everyone knows the classical elements: earth, water, air, and fire. However, these are rarely understood as they are usually presented – as generalities. In truth, each of these elements has its own character and principles that can be used in magick. Astrological magick is an excellent example of how the classical elements should be viewed for their individual strengths and weaknesses. As with all potential areas of study in occultism, it's good to be aware of where these ideas come from. Each culture will have their own take on them but the same fundamental concepts will almost always exist within those cultures. The origins of astrological magick involve Ancient Egyptian myths and other religious texts that have been passed down through time. They are not original ideas – they just might be older than you think! The topics this week include:What are the Five Elements?Sylphs, Undines, Gnomes and SalamandersThe Nature of Fire, Water, Air and Earth4 Fundamental ForcesEgyptian MythologyThe TetragrammatonThe First Four CircuitsThe Name of Jesus and The PentagramIn the extended show available at www.patreon.com/TheWholeRabbit we discuss:The Four Elements in AlchemyTarot: The Qabalistic Tree of ElementsThe Psychology of the Court CardsDNAThe Lower Quaternary of the Tree of LifeThe Lesser Banishing Ritual of the PentagramThe ArchangelsMedieval HumorsThe Four Suns of HorusFour Elements in RitualAlchemyWhere to find The Whole Rabbit:YouTube: https://youtu.be/z4DL6BFdzfMMerch: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/thewholerabbit/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0AnJZhmPzaby04afmEWOAVInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_whole_rabbitSources:https://www.ashg.org/discover-genetics/building-blocks/Lakota:https://aktalakota.stjo.org/lakota-culture/native-american-four-directions/Corpus Hermeticum:https://www.amazon.com/Corpus-Hermeticum-Pymander-Hermes-Trismegistus/dp/1517391644/ref=sr_1_1?crid=11DPQHTRFFXYS&keywords=corpus+hermeticum&qid=1667453589&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIzLjg2IiwicXNhIjoiMy4zNSIsInFzcCI6IjMuNDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=corpus+hermeticum%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-1Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Heinrich Cornelius AgrippaAlchemist's Handbook by Frater Albertus:https://www.amazon.com/Alchemists-Handbook-Practical-Laboratory-Alchemy/dp/0877281815/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3S6VZ2C0D26WM&keywords=alchemist%27s+handbook&qid=1667453671&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIxLjMwIiwicXNhIjoiMS41MiIsInFzcCI6IjEuMDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=alchemist%27s+%2Caps%2C165&sr=8-5Support the show
Welcome to the final episode of our in-depth exploration of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Since this is the final episode of the series, don't start listening here. Catch up on all of the episodes in this series on the podcast's website. We have been all over Occult Philosophy, and explored everything from its historical context to its complex cosmology and fascinating theories on divine light. We will look at the influences that Occult Philosophy has had in the nearly 500 years since its original publication. In all of the previous episodes, I have suggested chapters in Occult Philosophy that could be read to accompany your listening experience. But not this time! My guests and I will be mentioning quite a few books that have resulted from Agrippa's influence, however, and I will make sure to list them in the show notes. Finally, after a short hiatus, here is part eight of our exploration of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. The previous episodes of this podcast dealt primarily with material from books 1 and 2, but now it's time to dive into book 3, The Divine World. Joining me for this discussion is Dr. Justin Sledge of the Esoterica YouTube channel! We will specifically be discussing the Cabala of Occult Philosophy and Agrippa's place in the birth and propagation of Christian Cabala. If you would like to do some reading before listening to this episode, I think you can get a pretty good overview of Agrippa's take on this topic by reading book 3, chapters 10 through 25. However, note that references to Cabala, the Hebrew language and alphabet, and Jewish mysticism crop up throughout book 3. You can't really deny that Kabbalah is one of the cornerstones of Western occultism. It crops up everywhere from Solomonic magic to Tarot to the Golden Dawn. If you've looked into it at all, you've probably come across the concept that Kabbalah is usually split into three main branches, differentiated in the way they are transliterated into English. Christian Cabala, spelled with a C, is our main topic in this episode. Hermetic Qabalah, spelled with a Q, is the variety used by modern ceremonial magicians. Jewish Kabbalah, spelled with a K, is the original strain of Jewish mysticism that the others pull from. And always remember, if you want to catch up with the rest of the Agrippa series, you can visit the home page for the series. Magick - Henry Cornelius Agrippa - full occult audiobook with text. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim was a German polymath, physician, legal scholar, soldier, theologian, and occult writer. Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy published in 1533 drew heavily upon Kabbalah, Hermeticism, and neo-Platonism. His book was widely influential among occultists of the early modern period, and was condemned as heretical by the inquisitor of Cologne. It's finally time for part seven of our exploration of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. In previous episodes, we have examined both the structure of Occult Philosophy and the worldview it attempts to explain. We are finally ready to take a closer look at one of the topics that this massive work is best known for: planetary and astrological magic! This episode will cover a lot of material from across book 2 of Occult Philosophy. If you are looking for sections to read before listening to this episode, I would suggest starting with book 2, chapter 29, and reading through chapter 50. You'll also want to read chapters 58 and 59, as I reference them specifically. However, after this episode, I believe you will want to spend some serious time studying all of book 2, especially going back over the parts about planets and spirits from earlier on. As we will discover, both planetary and astrological magic cover a wide range of practices that occultists of all varieties are likely familiar with. You will find sigils, prayers, petitions, spirits, and hymns. In fact, this type of magic also leans heavily on occult correspondences, which can include metals, stones, crystals, herbs, foods, and animals.
Greetings, listeners! For the past few months, we have been enjoying a deep exploration of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy, and now it's time for us to make a brief detour. This bonus episode is an interview with my friend Michael Sanborn, who is releasing a translation of a new book, Letters to Friends of the Spirit by Sylvie Boyer-Camax and Rémi Boyer. This is a book about mysticism, Martinism, and modern Rosicrucianism, and I am certain you will find the interview quite interesting. Michael Sanborn is a book designer and translator specializing in contemporary European esoterica. He participates in several esoteric traditions, including Neoplatonism, and Templarism. He is also a gnostic bishop and a member of Azoth Temple in Portland, Oregon. Rémi Boyer has explored at length the world of the avant-garde, initiatory traditions, and philosophies of enlightenment. He works within the setting of the House of Surrealists in Cordes-sur-Ciel, for a new alliance between traditions, philosophies of awakening, and the artistic avant-garde. He is the author of some twenty specialized works, particularly on Western initiatory movements. Letters to Friends of the Spirit, like the previous three translations of works by Rémi Boyer, is published through Rose Circle Publications, the imprint founded by noted esoteric author and translator Piers A. Vaughan. We will be returning to Occult Philosophy next episode, so for now, please enjoy this bonus interview. Here we are, at part six of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. We're over halfway done! I know it's been a weird ride, but hold on, because we haven't gotten to the strangest stuff yet. At this point in our exploration, we have developed a strong idea of Agrippa's world and some of the basic premises of Occult Philosophy. We have looked at history, the nature of light and the cosmos, and the mathematical underpinnings of Renaissance magic. Now it is time to finally explore one of the strangest and most exciting elements in Occult Philosophy: spirits! Discussion of spirits occurs throughout this enormous work, but if you want some reading to get into before listening to this episode, first re-read book 2, chapter 22, and then read book 2, chapters 55 through 57. Daemons, daimones, angels, demons, and intelligences—these are all words that describe spirits. Sometimes they are various categories of spirits, other times they are words for "spirit" in another language. From time to time, even the gods are referred to as spirits. In this episode, we explore why that is, and maybe we even look at some ideas surrounding how you can communicate with them. I warned you that we hadn't gotten to the strangest stuff yet! Let me congratulate you on having both the courage and curiosity to listen to this episode! This is part five of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. If you feel lost and would like to catch up with earlier episodes in the series, you can find them on the series page. Why are courage and curiosity so important for this episode? Because we're going to be talking about math. Math and magic. I have been looking forward to this episode for a long time, but I know that for a lot of people, the idea of reading about and learning about math is pretty miserable. When occultists discover how much Agrippa loved math, and how central math is to Agrippa's Occult Philosophy, they sometimes seem pretty disappointed. Much of book two of Occult Philosophy deals with numbers and mathematics. If you would like to really get an amazing head start on this episode, read books 2, chapters 1 through 23. However, if that is too much, I think you can be pretty well prepared for this episode by just reading book 2, chapters 1, 2, 21, 22, and 23. Some of the math topics we will be talking about in this episode are the philosophical concept of number, the relationship between math and occult correspondences, magic squares, and sacred geometry. There is a lot of great material, and I hope you give it a listen even though math might seem like it's a bummer! Links Do Numbers Exist? Finally, here is part four of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy! If you feel lost and would like to catch up with the first two episodes, you can find them on the page for this series. In this episode, we will be taking a look at some pretty big topics: divine light and the senses. These form a pretty important core for the vision of magic outlined in this book, and I did as best I could trying to cover these topics and make sense of them. However, they are tricky, so I encourage feedback and questions if you feel like the topic hasn't been covered in enough depth. To understand how Agrippa believed that the senses work, we have to begin by examining his ideas on light. For this, we take a trip through the Ptolemaic worldview, explore the imagination, and look at some really bizarre and outdated scientific concepts. But all is not lost! Come with me on a strange trip—no need to bring your own flashlight! If you want to get a jump start on these topics, I would advise reading book one, chapters 49, 60, and 61. My guest this Sunday is someone whose name might ring a bell with many of our listeners out there, it's author, practitioner, Lucumi initiate and astrologer Eric Purdue who just published a brand new translation of Agrippa's ‘Three Books of Occult Philosophy' in fall last year with Inner Traditions. Eric has been drawn to mythology, magic, astrology and occultism since his high school years and as a musician living in Chicago he had access to books on all subjects that interested him. However, ultimately a fellow band member pointed him into a direction that subsequently turned out to be spot on in giving him the phone number of a Lucumi practitioner who also happened to have a deep interest in Western Esoteric Traditions such as the Picatrix. At age 18, Eric met this teacher and got a crash course in possessions, séances and a lot more work that led him to become an initiate of this specific Lucumi tradition and it was also through this lineage that he received the recommendation to study astrology. However, being used to Lucumi divinational techniques which are usually very accurate, Eric was soon disappointed with modern astrology. Due to the fact that his interest in Golden Dawn style ceremonial magic had already receded he was trying to work with Agrippa's ‘Three Books' – which btw can't be overrated in terms of relevance – and he first focused on Christian astrology and then on traditional astrology. In our conversation Eric will take time to explain the main differences between modern and traditional astrology, we will talk about how Arabic influences managed to preserve a vast amount of knowledge, touch upon free will and the use of certain celestial objects, their pros and cons and a lot more. Of course, another main focus of this episode will be Eric's motivation that led him to pursue an 11 year long journey in order to translate and publish Agrippa's life work. In any discussion about the ‘Three Books' Agrippa himself can't be left out so we will also talk about his life and explore how he ultimately got away with the work he was doing despite of the inquisition at his heels. Another fascinating topic will be what exactly the (in)famous ‘Fourth Book' consists of and who might have authored it for real and we will also try to answer some further questions such as how to use the ‘Three Books' in practice and what they have to teach you which is actually far more than just doing magic. Tempvs Fugit caused a sensation at the 2002 Calvi Festival of Polyphony. The group was singled out not only for its unusual vocal technique, but also for its innovative repertoire from the Nebbiu region, the result of research by the ethno-musicologist Corinne Bartolini, with harmonisations by Antoine Tramini. Their repertoire includes prayers for Holy Week, a 16th century Genoese processional song and the Vultum Tuum Mass, a Roman office from the very earliest times with a slight Byzantine touch, conceived as a depiction of the Virgin's face in sound. 1) VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS - L'ORME SANGUINE (Track starts at 8:36) 2) VELUM TEMPLI - VEXILLA REGIS - CHRISTUS VINCIT (Track starts at 56:39) 3) PERDONO (Track starts at 1:36:55) Intro and Outro Musicespecially written and recorded for the Thoth-Hermes Podcast by Chris Roberts

This episode is part three of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. If you feel lost and would like to catch up with the first two episodes, you can find them on the page for this series. In this episode, we will explore Agrippa's definition of magic, both through his words and by examining it through a modern lens. Beginning with this episode, I will make a point to let you know precise chapters we will be discussing. This should give you the opportunity to read specific chapters in Occult Philosophy so you can be more informed of the topics we discuss in this episode. Agrippa's definition of magic can be found in book 1, chapter 2. In the 2021 Inner Traditions edition of Occult Philosophy, translated by Eric Purdue, this chapter begins on page 18. I would like to point out that we will almost never spend an entire episode discussing just one chapter, but since magic is at the core of our exploration of this book, we need to spend some time understanding exactly what we are talking about! This series of episodes about Occult Philosophy will most likely last until Summer. My Patreon supporters will be receiving each episode a week before the rest of the world, along with bonus materials such as full interviews, a glimpse at works in progress, and the opportunity to suggest further topics for this Agrippa deep dive. I am so thrilled to finally be able to release this episode into the world! Eric Purdue has been working tirelessly on a new translation of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy - the first new translation in over 300 years. This edition corrects many, many mistakes and mistranslations, and will hopefully make this behemoth of a classic more approachable for the modern occultist. Purdue has studied metaphysics and the occult and has practiced magic and astrology for more than thirty years, with a particular focus on practical folk and astrological magic. Through his lectures and writings on traditional astrology and talismanic magic, he has been a notable voice on the subjects of medieval astrology, traditional magical systems, and the legacy of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa.
