The impulse to combine music and film goes back to the very beginning. The Lumiere brothers first silent film screening in Paris in 1895 was accompanied by a pianist. When films were added to vaudeville theaters at the beginning of the 20th century, music was provided by an in-house musician or organist, small ensembles, and even full orchestras. Pipe organs for theaters—at the time the most wide-ranging and loudest instruments available—were built by the American musical instrument company Wurlitzer. The famous "Mighty Wurlitzer" theatre organ was introduced in 1910, and was installed in theatres, museums, and churches around the world. Romantic-Classical styles and orchestration dominated the early years of sound films, and an emotional language of film music became widely understood. As film subject matter expanded, jazz and other "modernist" genres were added. Powerful rhythms, memorable melodic themes, and repeated motifs were common, as well as more subtle, quiet music to create mood and atmosphere. What we call ambient music today, was—and still is—a major part of film music, and came to be called the "underscore." On this transmission of Hearts of Space, ambient and atmospheric music for film, on a program called "UNDERSCORE 3." Music is by TIM STORY, LISA GERRARD & PIETER BOURKE, LUDOVICO EINAUDI, HANS ZIMMER, MYCHAEL DANNA, ENNIO MORRICONE, TOM HOLKENBORG, and featuring BRIAN KEANE'S score for DANTE: INFERNO TO PARADISE. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, the combination of ambient nature sounds and electronic music was actually an innovation in the 1970s. And you may be surprised that the idea had a history in European classical music, especially in England and France. In England, it was the so-called "pastoral" composers like ARNOLD BAX and RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, who created orchestral images of nature. In France, it was the Impressionists, from CLAUDE DEBUSSY to OLIVIER MESSIAEN. They didn't have recordings, so they created new instruments and playing techniques to imitate natural sounds like wind and birdsongs. By the mid-20th century, we could record the sounds of nature, edit them and play them back at will. In the 1950s, avant-garde composers like JOHN CAGE were promoting an awareness of ambient sound as equal to music. Music...was how you listened. Incorporating nature sounds into music was the next step; beside, film soundtracks had been doing it for years. The psychology is foundational: humans evolved listening to natural sounds, and they send a message we respond to instinctively. For example, birdsong on a gentle summer morning is delightful and calming. Blend in some subtle synthesizers, season with gourmet reverberation and you have what two young Canadians named MYCHAEL DANNA and TIM CLÉMENT called "environmental electronic music." It's an idea that was embraced by New Age musicians and in time became a bit of a cliché. But it led to an electronic genre of extended tone-color journeys in virtual space, which is still alive and well. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the fluid, airy sound of summer spacemusic, on a program called SUMMERTONES 3. Music is by MEG BOWLES, DANNA & CLÉMENT, CHRONOTOPE PROJECT, ALTUS, and STELLIA. [ view program page ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

In 1999, a 70-year-old Andrew Sarris spoke for the majority of critics about the Joel Schumacher-directed 8MM, when he said it  "...is clearly an evil film." Well, Mr. Sarris might have been a purveyor of auteur theory, but he's also a purveyor of being wrong. 25-years-later,  in a deep conversation that dissects this misunderstood Nic Cage gem like never before, Jordan and Nic reassess 8mm and find themselves at great odds with the 1999 critical establishment. But then they watch the punishment film, The Other Sister, and find that some of the time, maybe those critics were right.Music Heard this Episode:"Unsee" -- Mychael Danna"Hollywood" -- Mychael Danna"Missing Persons" -- Mychael Danna"366 Hoyt Ave." -- Mychael Danna"Come to Daddy" -- Aphex Twin Intro music - "If" by Broke For FreeConnect with us!PatreonTwitterFacebookEmailLinktr.eeLetterboxd - Nic & JordanThe Nicsperiment

Musician and film writer Soraya Sebghati joins from Los Angeles to venture into the lurid, strange world of...Toronto, ON, Canada and its mesmerizing underbelly of desire, longing, and grief in Atom Egoyan's 1994 breakout feature, 'Exotica'.We discuss Atom Egoyan as director - his keen sense for the uncanny amongst the mundane, and the ways 'Exotica' plays with artificiality, performance, and facade. Then, we discuss the film's musings on routine and the rippling effects of grief, and praise Egoyan's (relatively) non-judgemental curiosity with regard to the habits we all adopt as a means of coping with loss and alienation. Finally, we consider the film's much-mulled over ending and how it offers both a quietly devastating moment of catharsis and a hopeful message of emotional solidarity. This week we discuss the 2022 film adaptation of the best-selling novel Where The Crawdads sing; stylish marsh girls, the novel, nonsensical endings, undoing your own work, parallels to reality, plus a game of Log vs. Potato!   Where the Crawdads Sing is a 2022 American mystery and drama film based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens. It was directed by Olivia Newman from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar, and was produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Daisy Edgar-Jones leads the cast featuring Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Michael Hyatt, Sterling Macer Jr., Jojo Regina, Garret Dillahunt, Ahna O'Reilly, and David Strathairn. The story follows an abandoned yet defiant girl, Kya, who raises herself to adulthood in a North Carolina marshland, becoming a naturalist in the process. When the town's hotshot is found dead, she is the prime suspect and tried for murder. The film was released in the United States on July 15, 2022, by Sony Pictures Releasing under Columbia Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Edgar-Jones's performance and the cinematography, but found the film's overall tone incoherent. Audience reception was more positive and the film became a box office success, grossing $140 million worldwide on a $24 million budget. Canadian composer Mychael Danna composed the film's soundtrack, which includes the original song "Carolina" by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift that has been nominated for a Critics' Choice Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Grammy Award, and a Satellite Award. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa. We are Members of the Alberta Podcast Network.

Welcome to the return of Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice. For the fourteenth episode, I talked to the editor-in-chief/co-founder of The Film Stage, Jordan Raup, about Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan's 1994 erotic melodrama Exotica (available on a new Criterion Collection disc and alongside Calendar, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Adjustor on the Criterion Channel). At first blush, Egoyan's film defies easy categorization with its recursive structure, multiple central characters, and the director's own penchant for throwing viewers into previously defined relationships. Exotica's dizzying construction only amplifies those sensations with the characters' winding stream-of-consciousness monologues, DP Paul Sarossy's furtive camerawork, and Mychael Danna's Egyptian-influenced score. The plot isn't easily described, but it can be distilled down to the intersection of initially undefinable relationships of clientele and employees at the namesake's strip club. These oddballs range from lovelorn MCs to closeted bird egg collectors and Freudian father figures. Nearly every one of these characters meshes into a diagrammatic arc to reach the mosaic-esque climax, but those intricacies are a means to an end. Exotica (and arguably, Egoyan's body of work) traffic in the claustrophobically intimate, introducing dynamics that act as conduits for hard emotional truths. To remove the film from its obtuse contexts, consider instead that Egoyan's two primary influences for writing Exotica were being audited in real life and learning about the no-touch rule at strip clubs. Alike, today's podcast could be seen as an attempt to find a middle ground between these two perceptions of Exotica––one as a psychosexual nesting doll and the other as an emotionally linear inquiry into personal trauma and its ensuing repercussions. Along the way, we discuss the film's unexpected reception (one of two films to ever win awards at both the AVN Awards and Cannes), the shortcomings of its contemporary parallels, and Elias Koteas. Autumn brings transformations both subtle and powerful. The shadows lengthen as the focus of the sun moves south below the equator. When the definitive history of cross-cultural musical fusions and hybrids is written, there will be an honored place for the congruence of Indian classical and ambient-electronic music. Of all the experiments that were attempted after electronic instruments matured to the point of viability in the mid 20th century, this combination was one of the earliest and most successful. Synthesizers expanded the role of microtones and drones in Indian music, while raga and tala—the traditional melodic and rhythm systems of Indian classical music—brought a welcome sophistication to electronic music. It's an area we've explored since the earliest days of this program. What would you do if you could go back in time and talk to your 12-year-old self? What if you could also see a dead loved one again? For all the whiz-bang action-adventure stuffed into Ryan Reynolds' latest film, The Adam Project, composer Rob Simonsen's score never strays far from those sentimental questions.   The next collaboration between Reynolds and director Shawn Levy after last year's Free Guy, The Adam Project follows a time-traveling fighter pilot who flees his dystopian past to crash-land in 2022. And who should he meet but his younger, 12-year-old self, played by newcomer Walker Scobell, who tags along with him on an adventure not just to shake off bad guys from the future who are set to chase him down, but to reconnect with his long-dead father (Mark Ruffalo) and stop time travel altogether.   It's a film steeped in the nostalgia-friendly Amblin vibes of the 1980s, evoking everything from Flight of the Navigator to E.T., and that's a throughline Simonsen threads expertly. His is a deceptively simple score, pairing crackling, electronic synths for the high-tech action sequences with the tranquil piano and orchestra of its primary theme -- keeping the CG spectacle grounded in the achingly personal.   Easy work for Simonsen, who's proven himself a versatile composer since he came up in the early 2010s with indies like The Spectacular Now and Fast Color. And earlier this year, he primed the pump for the nostalgia well with his score for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Now, he speaks to me on the podcast today about his early work as a composer, what lessons he learned from mentor Mychael Danna, and the myriad ways COVID complicated the process of scoring this film.   You can find Rob Simonsen at his official website here.   The Adam Project is currently streaming on Netflix. You can also listen to the score for The Adam Project on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Sony Soundtracks.

How a human rights lawyer became a Hollywood composer, with Amritha Vaz '97 Arts, '02 Law When Amritha Vaz, got tendonitis at the age of 17, she thought her path in musical performance was at an end. But, after earning her law degree and working as a human rights lawyer, a few chance encounters led her back to music, this time as a composer. Vaz got her start as a composing career assisting Academy Award winning composer Mychael Danna on "500 Days of Summer". Nominated for her second Annie award for Best TV music, her credits include scoring Disney's popular animated series "Mira: Royal Detective '' and an episode of AppleTV's Emmy nominated “Home”. GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE composer Rob Simonsen talks about channeling Elmer Bernstein's original Ghostbusters music, going into top-secret studio vaults to read the script, and how he re-wired his musical brain in order to keep the music sounding true to the original. Then, he talks about how he knows when music fits the film, the rumored near-firing of his once boss, Mychael Danna, on Life of Pi, and why it's always crucial to dial in the perfect sound.

Autumn brings transformations both subtle and powerful. The shadows lengthen as the focus of the sun moves south below the equator. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we now experience rapid seasonal climate change on top of slow global climate change. It's a transition marked by familiar changes in temperature, color, and activity in the natural world, disrupted by increasingly extreme weather events. For ambient musicians, it's a time for complex tone colors burnished with glints of silver and gold, bittersweet harmonies, descending progressions, and gently melancholy emotions. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we transition to the darkening electro-acoustic soundscapes of autumn, on a program called SHADOWLANDS 2. Music is by MYCHAEL DANNA & TIM CLÉMENT, STEVE ROACH & MICHAEL STEARNS, MIGUEL NOYA, CLIFF MARTINEZ, ALEX HAAS, and LISA BELLA DONNA. We jump right into the conversation in this episode - no chit chat to start off - so don't think you've missed anything! While we unfortunately don't have a chance to discuss these, Jess just released two other scores as well, both for Netflix: the dramedy Afterlife of the Party and the animated feature film Dog Gone Trouble.   Find out more about Jess on her website. Cinderella is currently available on Amazon Prime while her and Mychael's score (as well as her score for Dog Gone Trouble and her score suite for Afterlife of the Party) are available on all platforms.

The concept of a "soundscape" was defined in the 1960s as a combination of sounds that create an immersive environment. It includes sounds of the natural acoustic environment and weather—called the geophony; animals and insects—called the biophony; and sounds made by humans—the anthropophony. In Canada, the soundscape idea was established for a whole generation of musicians by composer and educator R. MURRAY SCHAFER. Among his students were two young Canadian electronic musicians — MYCHAEL DANNA and TIM CLEMENT. In the mid 1980s they were creating what they called "environmental electronic music" like this classic track from the album SUMMERLAND. DANNA went on to become an A-list film composer known for non-traditional scores for films like The Life of Pi, while the combination of natural acoustic environmental sounds and electronic music became one of the enduring trends in the ambient music of today. Like scores for imaginary films, they can entertain, challenge, or sooth us, sending signals to our ancient limbic alert system that tell us to be vigilant, or relax. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a collection of immersive environments and electro-acoustic soundscapes called FLOATING WORLDS 3. Music is by DANNA & CLÉMENT, SINEPEARL, TOM EATON, ALPHA WAVE MOVEMENT, ALIO DIE & REMCO HELBERS, and STEVE ROACH. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Bryan E. Miller is a creative film composer whose goal is to help maximize the emotional impact of visual media by creating powerful, evocative film scores. Bryan studied at the Grove School of Music, and UCLA Extensions Film scoring program. Early in his career Bryan honed his craft by assisting composer Mark Waters on more than 50 episodes for Disney and orchestrated and conducted for composer Mychael Danna who has since won an Academy Award. Bryan has composed and produced music for hundreds of projects including movies, television, commercials, documentaries, and DVD featurettes. His clients include Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, CBS, ABC, A&E and The Style Network. You've probably heard his compositions in American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Boston Legal, The Big Bang Theory, Next Top Model, The Shield, General Hospital, Southland, and Access Hollywood, or listened to his signature music for the Comcast Logo. It was based on his versatility in multiple musical genres and his passion for interesting and creative challenges that Bryan was chosen to compose the score for the new feature film by New York Times best-selling author-turned-filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza - America: Imagine the World without Her. Produced by Academy Award-winner Gerald Molen (Schindler's List, Jurassic Park), America was a hit in the box office, becoming the sixth highest grossing political documentary in history. Bryan has signed with Milan Records, which released the America soundtrack album. Though primarily a composer of dramatic and narrative films, Miller loves the documentary genre, and frequently takes time to compose music for charities and humanitarian organizations like St. Jude Children's Hospital, World Vision, Best Friends Animal Rescue, and The Museum of Tolerance. Bryan's view: “It's a wonderful feeling when you can be part of a passionate team that wants to bring positive change to the world.” Bryan E. Miller is a rising star in Hollywood who is refreshingly un-Hollywood. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, Bryan now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and 3 children. Bryan is equal parts pragmatist and idealist. He gets the job done in an efficient and ego-free way, all the while striving to create music that “stirs the soul” and “connects us to something bigger than ourselves.”
