This is The Digital Story Podcast #907, August 8, 2023. Today's theme is "5 Photography Books that I Recommend." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Photography books have room in our lives just like inkjet prints. Studying a photographer's work by flipping through the pages shows a depth that we just don't get from a tablet display or even a laptop screen. And I have five recommendations that prove this point beautifully. Learn more on today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show.
HT1553 - Photography Books Speaking somewhat coarsely, photography books can be divided into two types. There are those books that are a monograph of the photographer's best work, and then there are photography books where the subject is something found in the world. The former draws attention to the photographer; the latter draws attention to the world. Time in New England by Paul Strand California and the West by Edward Weston The Jews of Greece by Morrie Camhi Yosemite Range of Light by Ansel Adams Summer Nights by Robert Adams The Home Place by Wright Morris Gypsies by Josef Koudelka The Sweet Flypaper of Life by Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes Italy: In the Shadow of Time by Linda Butler North American Cowboy - A Portrait by Jay Dusard Weeping Mary by O. Rufus Lovett From Uncertain to Blue by Keith Carter

Michael Torosian has spent his life taking photographs, interviewing great photographers, and making fine press photography books. He's in the process of making another entitled Lumiere Press, Printer Savant and Other Stories to commemorate the establishment of the Lumiere Press Archive at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto. It's full of life lessons and back-stories illuminating each of the twenty-two books he's published over the past four decades. We sat down in his workshop, behind his house in Toronto, to talk about the book. Topics covered in this first installment of a two part conversation include: photography, bookmaking, relentless exploration, 'general aesthetics,' cultivating aptitudes, the blossoming of the photography market, Edward Weston, Aaron Siskind, decoding visual language, composition, respect, paying homage, the Ninth Street Show, Gordon Parks, learning as the key to existence, making every word count, the Paris Review's Writers at Work series, capturing the voice of the artist, the book as the medium of photography, and more.
HT1193 - Old Photography Books My chosen addiction is used books. Nothing thrills me quite like discovering a great used bookstore on my travels. I really wished that extended to used photography books, but it doesn't. Nothing sadder than a poorly printed photograph.

Frank and Duncan talk about his thesis, "Beyond the Photo Album: Families in Photography Books," and Duncan explains why photo books are his favorite way to display photography. He also talks a bit about how the pandemic did, and didn't, affect his thesis, along with how his current role working in the Reed Admission Office is informed by his experience in writing a thesis.
"Martin Parr's celebrated photographs bridge the divide between art and documentary photography. His studies of the idiosyncrasies of mass culture and consumerism around the world, his innovative imagery, and his prolific output have placed him firmly at the forefront of contemporary art. He is an avid collector and maker of photobooks. His own photobooks include The Last Resort (1986), Common Sense (iggg) and Boring Postcards (Phaidon Press, 1999), and he is the subject of the monograph Martin Parr by Val Williams (Phaidon Press, 2002)." Together with Gerry Badger he is the co-author of The Photobook: A History, a beautiful three-volume set of books that offer an engrossing, admittedly subjective survey of the "best" photography books ever published, beginning with early experiments in the medium in mid-19yh-century England and ending with "raucous Japanese photo-diaries of the 1990s." I question Martin about his collection criteria - how he arrived at "best," and how various artistic and social movements influenced the look and content of photobooks over the decades.

Russian born photographer Alexey Titarenko is one of the more important young contemporary artists. Known for his long exposure technique, he approaches photography from an opposite direction where backgrounds stay in focus as people form blurry masses of motion. Also a master printer, Titarenko's techniques are often born of necessity.
