A few episodes ago I talked about masking in Lightroom, which is one of my favorite new features in the program. It wasn't a deep dive into masking, but a demonstration of how I use masks in Lightroom to add depth to my concert photography using what I call "Dodge & Burn +". It's a technique that's easy to do, and can be used on any genre of photography. During that show I mentioned that, for most jobs, I can usually finish all of my edits in Lightroom now, but that on occasion I may still finish an image in Photoshop. There are a number of reasons I might still end up in Photoshop. I might have a shot I want in my portfolio, and I just want to add som POP to it. I may have a critical client image that needs more complex edits, frequency separation, advanced masking or layers, or I might need tools that are either better in Photoshop, or that only exist there. With all of the options available in Photoshop, there are two specific techniques that, if I end up there, I will almost always try. These techniques don't always work, and in fact there are times they make the image worse, but my success ratio with these techniques is so high that will always at least try them. The steps I describe in this show will require Adobe's Photoshop, which has a trial version available here, and the Nik Collection from DxO, which also has a trial version. From the Nik set of plugins I use Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro often. Silver Efex Pro is a great BW conversion tool, but today we will use it differently, and I have to thank the amazing Alan Hess for this technique. Join me as I walk through how I use two of my favorite ways to finish an image in Photoshop, with the help of Nik's Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro, on this Behind the Shot. Researching Modernist architecture hasn't always been easy, particularly before the internet, if anyone remembers back that far. Before our phones were full of Cardi B, Tik Tok, and $32 million inheritance offers, pending a $1200 processing fee, of course, researching Modernism meant spending time in real life deep in a major library. Fortunately, the web brings incredible research resources and tools without leaving the comfort of your cool ranch Dorito-covered couch. Those are delicious, aren't they? Today we visit with two giants of Modernism research, Bill Storrer, creator of the Storrer system for Frank Lloyd Wright projects, and one of our favorite podcast guests, the Maestro of Modernism, the jolly green giant of Googie, the Samuel L. Jackson of architecture documentaries; the Ryan Seacrest of Modernism Week hosting dozens of events, author and speaker Alan Hess. He's one of the hardest working photographers in the music business, shooting for iHeart Radio. Brian only started professionally in 2005 and he's come a long way, getting to shoot a US President and multiple legends of music. Brian is also a COVID recoverer and he tells the story of how that came to be and his and his wife's recovery. Brian was a dream guest, his stories were so interesting. I didn't know where it would take me, but I knew it would be the adventure of a lifetime. Photographing people and events has opened up my world beyond my wildest dreams. Making art from what I see has become a true calling, and one I strive to do better and better, shoot by shoot. Access is a privelege I take very seriously. Whether I am backstage at an event, in close proximity to a subject, or in the audience, my goal is to capture the true essence of what's happening before me. I love it, and I'll never stop doing it.Photographer Brian Friedman started out as a road manager for the legendary jazz drummer Roy Haynes. But it was during Haynes’ 20-city tour, that Brian began photographing Roy and discovered his passion for image making that put him on a road to a new career. Since then, he has sharpened his skills and his eye to become recognized as a photographer of choice by noted entertainment personalities, corporate leaders, event planners and discerning individuals. His clients include iHeartRadio, Clearchannel Communications, NBC, CBS, 20th Century Fox, and comedians Brian Regan and Bill Burr, to name a few. Brian’s images have appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, People, Playboy, The Economist, and Pollstar to name a few. In 2007-2008 Brian had the distinct honor of photographing Barack and Michelle Obama for the Obama for America campaign. Recently Brian was given a 5 page live concert photography spread in M Music & Musician’s magazine – a first for that publication. To all of these assignments, Brian brings the same level of imagination and creativity that has distinguished his vision and his work for more than a decade.

Every fall, the New York Architecture and Design Film Festival (ADFF) premieres the best new documentaries of the year. Host George Smart was on the scene talking with the people behind the new movies. Ultan Guilfoyle’s award-winning films have been shown on PBS and HBO in the US and the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the UK. He is author of two books about design, and with Sydney Pollack, Guilfoyle produced Sketches of Frank Gehry. His latest film is Frank Gehry: Building Justice where architect Gehry, philanthropist George Soros, and students at SCI-ARC and Yale re-design prison architecture for the complex social, political, racial, and aesthetic issues behind incarceration.  Paul Clemence is co-producer with Aksel Stasny of the film Two Pianos. His book on Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House remains the most complete photo documentation of that iconic design, and his many photographs have appeared in Metropolis, ArchDaily, Architizer, Casa Vogue Brasil, and his own blog Archi-photo with nearly 1M followers worldwide. Two Pianos is about the Italian architect Renzo Piano, and the film captures the masterful use of light, carefully orchestrated relationship between inside and outside, the seamless connection to the surroundings, and an exacting craftsmanship.  Alan Hess is an architect and author who has shed light on many forgotten and neglected styles of postwar American modernist architecture. The Los Angeles Conservancy named him "The preeminent authority on Southern California Modernism."  Host George Smart named him the Samuel L. Jackson of architecture documentaries, because like the prolific Mr. Jackson in film, Alan has appeared in more documentaries for design than anyone else.  Hess is one of the stars in a Jake and Tracey Gorst documentary on architect Albert Frey, the first American to work for French superstar architect Le Corbusier, in the film Frey Part I, The Architectural Envoy.

Mousetalgia reports on "Disney's Mid-Century Modern - to the World's Fair and Beyond," a panel discussion held at the Walt Disney Family Museum with Garner Holt's Bill Butler, historian Alan Hess, and historian Bill Cotter, the preeminent expert on the World's Fairs. The panelists discussed the influence of modern design on Disney's mid-century productions, including Disneyland and the 1964-65 World's Fair. Clean lines, contemporary material and modern sensibilities influenced both Disney's artists and the creative works they developed, and we discuss many of Walt Disney's modern projects, including his first Burbank campus, his television productions, Disneyland's Space Bar automat, the Disneyland Hotel, and the House of the Future. Bill Cotter also discussed the '64-'65 World's Fair, and Walt's cutting-edge design for the New York attractions. Then, Mousetalgia debuts a new feature: "Giving You a Hand with the Land," our touring advice segment in which we have callers present their unique trip-planning situations, and then we answer their questions and help plan the trip for those circumstances. Today, Michele joins the show to make plans for a reunion with a best friend sans their families to celebrate a 40th birthday. Plus - if you had to experience a single attraction 365 days in a row... which would you choose? Bonus: you could win a $50 Disney Gift Card - listen for details!
