Pod Like A Hole discusses Stevie Wonders' Songs In The Key of Life. The hosts touch on his other amazing 70s albums, the Wonder of Stevie Wonder, the TV Show the Curse, Weird Al, Wild Wild West, and review Sides A and B of the album - track by track. Join us next time for side B and C. Followed by our final Podcasts that will cover Robert Smith's the Cure.
On the 4th of July 2024, Pod Like A Hole is celebrating by uploading our discussion of Willie Nelson's The Red Headed Stranger. This concept album is a Sunday morning favorite in one of the hosts homes, and the boys seem to all agree that it's status as an All American Classic is no fluke. Willie bet on himself (and the talents of his sister Bobbi Nelson) and hit big. This is the 2nd and final episode in our Willie Nelson series. Remaining artists in this final season of Pod Like A Hole are Stevie Wonder and the Cure. In that order.
Willie Nelson is many things: a lover, a traveler, a Texan, a guitar player, smoker, outlaw, hero, poet, fashion icon, actor, activist, philanthropist, gunslinger, wiseacre, animal lover, brother, father, husband (four times over), Hellraiser, braids and beard enthusiast, but most of all Willie is a friend to all. In this episode of Pod Like A Hole the hosts discuss the life and times of WIllie Nelson. His brushes with the leaf and the law, his multiple wives, his work as a public servant to the people and animals of America, his collaborations that cross genres and his work with the other Outlaw Country Heroes, and how he manages to be a man that for 91 years and counting is still making music and along the way has become a friend to almost everyone in every walk of life. We find time to touch on 10 or so of his standout albums (couldn't get to all 100+ of his records), and in the next episode we will dedicate the recording to his masterpiece: The Red Headed Stranger.
Pod Like A Hole: Mastodon Part 3 - Emperor of Sand Track by Track The hosts riff and theorize about the journey of the Wanderer as he goes toe to toe with the Sultan on Mastodon's 2017 release: Emperor of Sand. This is the 3rd and final Mastodon episode in this Pod Like A Hole mini season. The first episode covered their history, the second was a discography overview, and the third is EOS. Episode starts with news and recs, Mastodon talk starts about 25 minutes in. While the discussion of Mastodon ends here and moves to either Stevie, WIllie, Sousixe, or Robert in the final Pod Like a Hole Podcasts - they will forever be in the lifetime rock rotation.
In what is one of my favorite talks this podcast has had, the hosts walk through the entire Mastodon discography - short of the track by track talk of Emperor of Sand and a Cold Dark Place that will be the bulk of the next episode. Starts with Call of the Mastodon, ends with Hushed and Grim. How many different ways can three 40ish Dads say "wow this album is great, oh and this album is also great" ? You will find out in this episode. Please do not turn this episode into a drinking game where you take a shot every time a comment is made on a great riff, or that you can't believe the drummer can sing that well, or that Brent Hinds is a special dude. You will go blind. *Editors note: Out of the four members we do not talk enough about what Bill Kelliher does to put this band over the top. That's what he gets for being the only one who doesn't hog the microphone but make no mistake, he's an all star riffer. This is episode 2 of a 3 part Mastodon Pod Like A Hole Mini Season.
Washing upon the beach of your shipwrecked life is another episode of Pod Like a Hole. The first of 3 episodes dedicated to the mighty Mastodon of the south. Episode 1 (this episode) we cover the band's formation, the 4 members of this band, and the bulk of the discussion is the influences and peers that helped shape their sound. If you are a fan of ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Neurosis, Melvins, High on Fire, and even the Seattle scene of the 90s there is something here for you. Episode 2 will be a gushing discussion of their discography at a macro level, and Episode 3 will be a track by tack review of Emperor of Sand at a micro level.
We had to do a Nu Metal episode. One hosts lived and breathed it during his teens, a real Jinco Wallet Chain nerd. Another host dabbled in the scene, sometimes to just check on his friend and make sure he wasn't too far gone. A third host was drafted into the No Limit army at the time and was too busy fighting on battles on the Sun Coasts and missed the entire movement back home. In addition to discussing Toxcity track by track you'll find discussions on Miami Vice, Fargo, Iron Maiden, The Curse, Hed PE, Slipknot, Korn, RIck Rubin, and pizza. Spoilers: this episode has one host give his lowest ranking ever. Recs, Current Events, general music chat, and SOAD history in the first hour. Track by Track starts at the 1 hour mark. You and your buddies flip your collars, as the rain pours down. You huddle under an awning as you finish your smokes.Life is good. You are young, independent, and ready for trouble. Then you head in to the bar. the joint. The dive. It's your home away from home. Speaking of home, the bartender tells you that the police department called, and your house is on fire. Then it occurs to you. You aren't young. You are 42. And then occurs to you that you've left your children home along to go drink... That scene and so many more await you on the Pod Like A Hole track-by-track review of Tom Waits' 1985 classic. With still one foot in the boxcars, Tom Waits explores European avant-garde influences and the results...well you'll have to listen to Eric , Marc and Steve figure it all out. Today on the 'kast we turn our eyes (and ears) to the Smashing Pumpkins' (or just Billy?) track "EYE" from the Trent Reznor-produced soundtrack to the 1997 David Lynch film, Lost Highway. We delve into the surprisingly Shaquille O'Neal-based origins of "Eye," Lynch's initial rejection of "Tear," and give our two cents on the film and the rest of the twisted tunes from the soundtrack. Along the way, we'll tell tales of meeting Lou Reed while high on weed cookies, ponder why This Mortal Coil's gorgeous "Song to the Siren" doesn't make the final soundtrack and ask the big question: Is Hocus Pocus a good movie or a GREAT movie? All that plus our pals at the Nine Inch Nails/David Bowie-centric podcast Pod Like A Hole drop in to give their thoughts on "Eye." Is it any wonder we can't sleep? The Pod Like A Hole podcast has landed on an album that is so big we are going to give it the King Ink's treatment. Before the PLAH team dissects the 1992 release Henry's Dream, they are going to go through the timeline from the formation of the Birthday Party, through all of the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds releases, up to what Nick and the band are up to in the current day. We will briefly discuss the sound and the evolution of the band album by album, peppered with observations of various hair styles, cleanliness of undershirts, and how many books Nick wanted us to know he was reading. We are joined by special guest and friend of the show, Cris Cleen for this first installment in this series we will be covering the chaotic and greasy rock years of 1979 up through 1996. Next episode we will push Cris out of the studio and put on our fancy scarves and sweaters to discuss the (not always so) chill and "mature" era of the band. Pod Like a Hole Phase 2: A Space Poddity"Blackstar"After sending Pod Like a Hole into the black hole at the end of Season 1, your boys have returned as a singularity. An enlightened entity of hope, wit and outrageous flash.... Marc, Steve and Eric have returned to host Season 2: A Space Poddity. For each of these episodes we will randomly (thanks to our "Diamond Dice") review a David Bowie album. As always we'll give history, pop culture, and patented Pod Like A Hole humor and camaraderie. It's a family affair here at Pod Like A Hole headquarters. Your favorite Reznor/NIN podcast has reached the point where it is 2010: NIN is on hiatus and Trent, Atticus, Rob join Trent's new wife (and former indie rock frontwoman) Mariqueen Maandig to create a project together. Marc, Steve and Eric dig into this dreamy glitch-tronica act (Eric is trying to make that genre stick). The music may get sleepy but the conversation never does!Follow them through a track-by-track analysis of both EPs (self-titled, "An Omen"), the full length "Welcome Oblivion" as they look at how these songs stand on their own, and how they stack up against NIN-proper work. We discuss the instrumentation, lyrics, music videos, MANY remixes and give you a loving yet critical look at this interesting era for Trent'n'friendz. In addition we dig into some of the soundtrack ("Call of Duty: Black Ops II") and Queens of the Stoned Age collaborations that Mr. Reznor was involved in during this era.It is a lively conversation, and Steve basically finds a reason to write Eric out of his will in the last twenty minutes... Your host Mike guests on another podcast! I join Steven on this recording of supplemental material for his Pod Like A Hole Podcast. We discuss my favorite album from Nine Inch Nails, The Fragile.
In this episode of POD LIKE A HOLE your hosts, Steven E. Chambers, Eric Anderson, and Marc Branstad give you a track by track analysis of Nine Inch Nails' EP Broken and a breakdown of the subsequent remix album Fixed. We also delve into the never officially released Broken long form video that, by all intents and purposes, was not safe for humanity. Marc thinks Nine Inch Nails have never played two particular songs from the catalog live (they have). Eric sounds like he's recording in a faraway land (He's not.) Welcome to episode 1 of Pod Like A Hole. In this episode Marc, Steven, and Eric take you through the first four Halo releases of Nine Inch Nails and give a track by track analysis of Nine Inch Nails debut album, Pretty Hate Machine. We also spend a little time discussing what Trent Reznor was up to before Nine Inch Nails and why we like them/him so damn much.
