*Who do the green roads and wide open spaces of Albion belong to?   *This episode is a story is about a collision of two cultures - the counterculture of the twin tribes of urban free party ravers and new age travellers - and the mainstream culture of landowners, the legal authorities, English Heritage and right-wing politicians.   *In the first of a series on '80s and '90s counterculture, Aaron Trinder, director of the documentary 'Free Party: A Folk History' came to the Bureau to tell how that collision played out in the years between 1985 and 1992 when extra-ordinary free festivals and parties built  on youthful passion, music, community, dancing, the desire to connect with the ancient landcape  - and drugs - were violently suppressed.   *We hear of the brutal police tactics at 'The Battle of the Beanfield' and at Britiain's largest ever free rave at Castle Morton; how legislation has curtailed the culture of the travellers, the use of common land and ancient rights of access, and we note that whilst free festivals have been crushed, commercial festivals have become an essential part of the the mainstream culture, the entertainment industry and the economy.   *Upcoming: Mark Angelo Harrison on Spiral Tribe   More on Aaron's film 'Free Party a Folk History'    #festivals #counterculture #freefestivals #spiraltribe #squatparty #travellers #newagetravellers #battleofthebeanfield #hippie #castlemorton #techno #drugs #lsd #soundsystem #raveculture #raves #StonehengeFreeFestival #stonehenge

How to trust yourself! Let's talk about it, Rich Mystic Man Style! Trusting that you'll know what to say. Trusting that you'll know what to do. Trusting that you will be supported in all your endeavours. Trusting that you'll have enough money. Trusting that you are enough. Trust is a journey – never a place at which we arrive. But it can be unfolded, unpacked, or even excavated. Clint X Morgan is coming to us calm and steady today, a reassuring voice reminding us to take a moment and appreciate that we are exactly where we need to be. Drawing on his stellar personal experience and intuition, as per usual, The Rich Mystic Man is sharing that in that moment of distrust (which we are all faced with), we can reflect on what we can do differently. Perhaps that means a decision to find a way to outsource the chore that we don't enjoy doing. Or maybe it's checking in with our gratitude. Trust the divine. Trust the plan. Sure, easier said than done. But Clint X Morgan and The Rich Mystic Man community are on hand to support, and perhaps this download is just what you need to hear today. It probably is. In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Sara Palomarr who talked about the mystery of greeting cards, the power of a duo and not being Buster Keaton. Sara is another comedian I happened upon during the pandemic lockdowns. Their videos online, both solo and with their Daft Duo partner Angela Legg intrigued me and when I saw that the Daft Duo would be performing at The 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, I decided to check them out.  When I went to the show as part of the Free Festival, it was a slow day and sadly I was the only one in the audience. Sara and Angela decided they would do the show anyway and I really enjoyed the performance which was a mixture of stand-up, song, dance, clowning, and slapstick. It was very energetic and lots of fun. When the show was over I offered some money (as it was the Free Festival) and they agreed a selfie of the three of us would be enough. It was a sweet way to end what had been a delightful hour, and I was very happy to see how well the show was subsequently reviewed. Sara continues to perform as a stand-up in Scotland and I'm sure will go from strength to strength as their career develops and grows. He is a managing editor of the Oxford Literary Review and director of Quick Fictions. He has published many books, including Telepathy and Literature, E.M. Forster, Jacques Derrida, The Uncanny, Veering: A Theory of Literature, How to Read Shakespeare, and Hélène Cixous: Dreamer, Realist, Analyst, Writing, as well as the novels Quilt and An English Guide to Birdwatching, and Mother: A Memoir. In addition, he is co-author with Andrew Bennett of three books: Elizabeth Bowen and the Dissolution of the Novel, This Thing Called Literature: Reading, Thinking, Writing, and An Introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory Sixth edition, 2023. Royle's current projects include a detective novel, a collection of essays about new approaches to narrative theory, and a collaborative work with Timothy Morton on Covid-19. His latest book, David Bowie, Enid Blyton and the Sun Machine, is due to be published in November 2023.“There's a great David Bowie song called ‘Memory of a Free Festival.' It's a song about a concert that he organized in Beckenham in August 1969, the same weekend of Woodstock. He wrote this song about that concert. And in August 1969, also, his father died just 10 days or so before the concert. And his funeral took place days before. So the song that Bowie wrote is, I think, deeply resonant of the death of his father, as well as about the concert itself. And it's an extraordinary song about the end of the 1960s as well. I think there's a sort of critical consensus that it's with this song that Bowie really started coming into his own. And the second part is just kind of chorus. ‘The Sun Machine is coming down, and we are going to have a party.' And it's kind of demonic. It's an extraordinary refrain, which really, it's hypnotic. It's mesmerizing. And I found myself trying to think about this idea of a sun machine. What is a sun machine? How might we describe a sun machine? What do we feel about the idea of a sun machine? Something affirmative but strange that is arriving, that's coming down, and that we are going to celebrate. We're going to have a party. So the sun machine in the book is in part an attempt to think about what music does to me, or what music might do to people more generally. And that's another key way, I suppose, in which I'm interested in the wordless. The power of listening. The power of music. The capacity that music has to transport and to transform, but also the power of music. And this is something that David Bowie realized very early on. I think the power of music and its links with memory. So the relationship between music and mourning, but also the way in which our memories of our lives are bound up with music and how listening to music can be like opening a portal into the past. And into particular ways of thinking about memory.”www.routledge.com/An-Introduction-to-Literature-Criticism-and-Theory/Bennett-Royle/p/book/9781032158846 https://myriadeditions.com/creator/nicholas-royle/ https://quickfiction.co.uk/www.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

And into particular ways of thinking about memory.”Nicholas Royle is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Sussex, England, where he has been based since 1999. Thanks so much for downloading On The Fly! This is episode 6 with Rob Fitzhugh – Director of the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival You can find him online here: Website: www.dublinsmartphonefilmfestival.com Instagram/Twitter/Facebook: @dubsmartff Rob is brilliant at getting people to market their films and market them well for film festivals. I contributed to the 2019 festival and for the first time I was thinking about promo images, social media content for the festival to use to promote my film. It was down to Rob and his experience as a festival organiser and it absolutely paid off. Non-filmmakers out there might be wondering what’s in this episode for them? All I can say is that what I learned from Rob is (ironically) what I’ve been telling people in comms for years about their blog posts, websites, their businesses, etc. It's so easy to forget this stuff in a different context and yet it's all basically the same. It's self promotion: Thinking about your audience Thinking about your story and nailing that pitch Being brutal with information and cutting it back to be as concise as possible So whatever you do, if there's an element of promotion (or something that you missing and could be using these techniques) then there’s something to learn here. And if this is helpful remember and check out the #OnTheFlyPodcast extra with SJ van Breda (from Ep4) who talks about her experiences with film festivals! Song for the Episode Dedicated to Rob is "Memory of a Free Festival by David Bowie" Not that the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is free, but as good as, it's amazing value and Rob and his team have a huge passion for what they do which is evident all year round in the work that he does in training and promoting filmmaking. This is my favourite version the song, recorded at The BBC. –––––––––––––– In case you didn’t know… My name’s Jon Gill and I’m a filmmaker based in Fife, Scotland For almost 10 years I’ve been helping people across the UK to tell their stories shooting, editing and sharing video using a mobile phone or tablet. They might be personal stories, business stories, “how to” stories, holiday stories for that matter… I can make your video I can make a video with you (you learn on the job), or I can train you to make your video on your own If that’s something you’ve been thinking, that would be useful to your business, organisation or team, then please get in touch – You’ll find me at MadeOnAMobile.co.uk –––––––––––––– Thanks again for joining #OnTheFlyPodcast Please subscribe if you haven’t already to make sure you get the pod as soon as it’s uploaded. What would be really helpful just now is recommendations to others, shares on social media, ratings where you download you podcast. I know it takes time but it’s so valuable to me being able to keep doing this and maybe even getting some sponsorship. It takes about a day in total to produce one of these so in real terms it’s a cost to my business – but if it’s worthwhile (to you) I want to keep doing them. So please support in any way you can. See you for Episode 7!
