After possibly the most aggressive speech on immigration ever made by a British Prime Minister, we attempt the adult conversation on the topic that politicians won't have. Why can't Britain accept the benefits of immigration? Who's going to bail out the care system when it collapses? And what the hell is Labour playing at anyway? Plus: Politicians think artificial intelligence will fix everything. Have they bought the snake oil? And in the Extra Bit for Patreon people, should we fight to save the after-work pint? • Come to Oh God, What Now? Live at 21Soho, London on Weds 11 June. "Someone might say, I don't understand music; but most people experience music emotionally and would agree that music is an abstraction. You don't need to put music into words right away—you just listen. Cinema is a lot like music. It can be very abstract, but people have a yearning to make intellectual sense of it, to put it right into words." - David LynchSomeone might say the world lost a giant earlier this year, when the beloved David Lynch shrugged off this mortal coil and bid farewell to the world. As sad as David's passing is, we're beyond lucky to have access to his art and we can experience a work of David Lynch as many times as we want. We can also have a great discussion and a fine playlist that highlights some of the best Lynchian musical moments. Here in Top Ten Songs From The Works Of David Lynch Part 2, we reveal picks 5-1 and wrap up our epic tribute to the man. Allow yourself to be immersed in the escapist sounds of dream pop. A genre originally from the 80s combining influences from the psychedelic 60s era with a whole new soundscape, this genre is as weird as it is mystical, magical and often beautiful. The experimentation with sonic textures with reverb, echo, effects pedals as well as whimsical, operatic or breathy vocals from bands like the Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and A.R. Kane would inspire some popular indie bands that we know and love today. A wintry collage from one of 2024's breakout stars. As far as crossover electronic success goes, Barry Can't Swim's 2024 scorecard would take some beating. His singles have racked up hundreds of millions of streams, he bagged a Mercury Prize nomination and has the range to both pack out festivals as a DJ and sell out tours worldwide with a string-accented live show. Barely 12 months on from the release of debut album "When Will We Land?", it's fair to say Josh Mannie is one of the most in-demand artists working in dance and electronic music right now, with a follow-up LP nearly done, he says. For RA.968, he pulls in the complete opposite direction from any of that. Sure, there are nods to Mark Leckey and late-night jazz haunts throughout his catalogue, and the ruminative clouds drifting across his signature golden-hour glow do suggest an artist with a sharp grasp on meteorological melancholy. But a beatless collage featuring Suso Sáiz, Slow Attack Ensemble and Lorenzo Senni? It's a surprise, and a welcome one at that. Speckled with exclusive airings of brand-new ambient material, Barry Can't Swim's RA Podcast charts a path from This Mortal Coil to Ryuichi Sakamoto, with a detour through some Linkwood and Anthony Naples deep cuts we've not heard for a good while. (He even includes a Stars of the Lid favourite which namechecks Fulham's home ground, an act of mid-table grace for the diehard Everton fan). RA.968 has the crackle of a frosty night walk set to tape—a holiday gift from one of the most popular acts in the game. 'Tis the season. @barrycantswim Read more at ra.co/podcast/968
This episode brings to a close our periodic investigations of the Steven Wilson-curated 'Intrigue' compilation. Covering progressive sounds in UK alternative/post-punk music from 1979-89, 'Intrigue' nails its intention, proving that, while traditional prog rock may have waned in the '80s, that spirit of adventure and invention remained alive through the work of dozens and dozens of UK music-makers in this time period. This episode focuses on Kate Bush, Dif Juz, Cardiacs, Dead Can Dance, SLAB!, Momus, No-man and a host of others. Simon Raymonde's affecting and beautifully written memoir ‘In One Ear' records life in the ‘60s growing up with a father who wrote and arranged for Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro and the Walker Brothers, the impossibly shy promotional activities of the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil and the struggles and eventual jackpot of the Bella Union record label he founded. Louise Rutkowski in conversation with David Eastuagh https://louiserutkowski.com/ At 19, Louise was signed to CBS Records, recording three singles and an album with soul producer Pete Wingfield with the band Sunset Gun. Prior to forming this band with sister Dee and keyboard player Ross Campbell, Louise, along with sister Dee, performed as backing vocalists for Bourgie Bourgie; a band created by legendary Postcard Records' boss Alan Horne. As part of the This Mortal Coil collective, Louise's distinctive voice can be heard on the Filigree & Shadow and Blood albums, and as lead vocalist on The Hope Blister's critically acclaimed 1998 Smile's OK album, all of which were released on the 4AD Records recording label.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho RAY ALDER is the lead vocalist of the progressive metal band Fates Warning since their 1988 release No Exit. He has released two albums Engine in 1999 and Superholic in 2002 with Engine. He also sang on Redemption's albums The Origins of Ruin, The Fullness of Time, Snowfall on Judgment Day, This Mortal Coil, and The Art of Loss, having produced their debut self-titled release in 2002. Ray Alder's second solo release is simply entitled “II”, but in musical terms this is a much more revealing, exploratory piece of work than its predecessor. Graham Coath talks to North Carolina indie pop outfit The Mystery Plan. They will talk about Their new album 'Haunted Organic Machines', released via American boutique label 10mm Omega Recordings. Their eighth full-length album and 13th major release to date, the band explores new, but familiar territory from spacey dance grooves to spooky, moody dream pop and then some. This record finds the group in new and very strange soundscapes. While the last few records were co-produced and mixed by the legendary John Fryer (4AD, This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Nine Inch Nails, Love & Rockets), this one is produced by Jason Herring and Rob Tavaglione exclusively. It's a little louder, while being equally textured and strangely arranged. "This is an emotional album. The songs from this record were born during the pandemic, either during lockdown or as we were coming back into a somewhat more normal life. There is no denying the emotional tug between longing for companionship and the celebration of togetherness. Some songs are about sorrow while others are of the love of life. 'Big Bliss', the opener, is about both of those things together. This album has sadness and joy, uneasiness and comfort, depending on the song. The closing song, 'Holding My Interest' actually did not originate during the pandemic, but was reworked during the downtime and transformed into a love song. Jason wanted to end the album on a sweet note and leave our listeners with a feeling of hope and warmth," explains Amy Herring. "Our albums have always offered a variety of musical styles and a journey of feelings and, of course, this one does that as well. We do not believe in playing to one style of music over and over again. Our band leader Jason is a DJ by trade and has been making mixed tapes since he was a child. He has always loved taking his listeners on a journey, giving the audience a variety of lovely tunes to grace their ears keeping them from ever being bored… That is exactly what he's doing here, only we're making the music ourselves."
The 8th full-length album by North Carolina's The Mystery Plan is called "Haunted Organic Machines" released on 10mm Omega Recordings. I spoke to Jason Herring, one of the founders and producers (Along with Rob Tavaglione ) of the Charlotte-based collective that formed in 2010 initially as a duo (Jason Herring and Paul Jensen). Then Jason's wife, Amy Herring joined the band. Several years later, the line-up grew with Otis Hughes, Patty McLaughlin Thomas and Jefferson Chester. The Mystery Plan's previous releases was produced by the legendary producer John Fryer (4AD, This Mortal Coil, Black Needle Noise). The collaboration shaped their albums: the 2017 "Queensland Ballroom", "Zsa Zsa," 2020 and "You Also Have Eyes" released on 2021.https://themysteryplan.bandcamp.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturnaListen : http://modsnapradio.com
Heavy but melodic guitar riffs, intricate beats that switch between a Pantera groove and extreme metal blast beats, and otherworldly vocals are the cornerstones of Heartwork, the fourth studio album by English band Carcass. Expanding upon their earlier grindcore approach, Heartwork is a journey that grabs you by the (shredded) throat and won't let go for nearly forty-two minutes. From the NWOBHM styled "This Mortal Coil" to the ferocious hardcore stomp of "Carnal Forge," the band never lets up. In addition to tackling this classic of the genre, we also check out the YouTube video by Steve Welch, "If Guns N' Roses 'Appetite For Destruction' was written by 12 different bands" to find out how Steve did turning G N' R songs into tracks by Oasis, W.A.S.P., Danzig and more. One November spawned a monster in the shape of this podcast: @weheardwonders play and review new tunes from disco-house collective Crazy P, scuzzy garage-rock apparition Ghost Woman, Brazilian-music-besotted Belarusians SOYUZ, and wonderful Ghanaian gospel singer Florence Adooni. We also share our thoughts on the first offering from international posse Temps, the sprawlingly ambitious musical project spearheaded by James Acaster - will it be a tasty morsel or a hot mess? All this, plus Andrew is shook by Iain's admission about a certain song, and a millennial alt-folk update of This Mortal Coil has the Vinyl Word. In 2017 Reverend Vincent Nguyễn Văn Long was one of only two Catholic Bishops in Australia who didn't tell his congregation to vote against same-sex marriage. He joined Indira Naidoo in This Mortal Coil to tell the story of his life, from fleeing his homeland of Vietnam as a refugee, to becoming Australia's first Asian-born Catholic Bishop.
Aleks Krotoski explores what it means to be solitary in our digital world and whether we should be more nuanced in our approach to the complex human emotion of loneliness. To mark the 10th anniversary of the Digital Human, we've been reflecting on some of the questions that have stuck with us over the years. When 'Isolation' aired in 2013, the phrase 'loneliness epidemic' often appeared in the press with digital technology regarded as a key culprit in increasing isolation. Aleks interrogated this idea, exploring ways in which technology might facilitate as well as disrupt connection, speaking to inventor Joanna Montgomery whose prototype project 'Pillow Talk' had become an internet sensation. Things shifted during lockdown when enforced separation from loved ones and, conversely, a lack of personal space, effectively mainstreamed loneliness, with technology reframed as an important tool in keeping us connected. In this follow-up programme Aleks wonders what insights the pandemic revealed about loneliness and how we might future-proof ourselves against it? She finds out what happened next for Joanna Montgomery and talks to writer and historian Fay Bound Alberti who suggests that there is a distinction between transitory and chronic loneliness. 'Wellbeing smuggler' Antony Malmo talks about how the language we use around loneliness can be counter-productive whilst Maff Potts of the Camerados movement explains how setting up 'public living rooms' can remove stigma and encourage community connections. Produced by Lynsey Moyes in Edinburgh. Contributors: Joanna Montgomery is an interaction designer, founder of technology company, Little Riot and the creative mind behind the internet phenomenon "Pillow Talk”. Her work explores how humans engage with technology and the impact it has on society. Antony Malmo, Director of Change and Capability at Allos Australia describes himself as a ‘wellbeing smuggler' and ‘jargon cutter' and is an accomplished educator across the fields of management, finance, health, engineering and manufacturing. Fay Bound Alberti is a writer, historian and consultant. She is UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Professor in Modern History at the University of York. Her books include This Mortal Coil (2016) and A Biography of Loneliness (2020). Maff Potts is founder of the Camerados movement which believes that the simple human act of looking after each other can be transformative. https://www.camerados.org/
The most common causes of death have changed dramatically over the centuries; ten thousand years ago, in the Palaeolithic period, you were most likely to die from violence or an accident, while in the Middle Ages, death was most often a result of famine, plague or childbirth. By the 19th century, infectious diseases such as smallpox, typhoid and measles were our biggest killers. So what changed, what's killing us most now, and how might it look in the future? Kathryn speaks to Andrew Doig, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Manchester, whose four decades of research have culminated in his book This Mortal Coil, A History of Death.
"Long afloat in shipless oceans": So begins Song To The Siren whose lyrics were inspired by Homer's Odyssey and the story of the Sirens who lured unwitting sailors to their deaths on the rocks. There is something so ancient and enchanting about the Siren that appeals to us. For the wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson listening to the song reinforced his belief that the eerie calls of seals at night were in fact the original siren voices whose sound and shape convinced sailors that they were being called by strange mer-creatures. His collaboration with poet Alec Finlay led to Chris recording two singers singing to each other across a bay in the North East of England "Here I am waiting to enfold you". Song To The Siren fills him with melancholy. The image of lives lost at sea is one that Meg Bignell strongly associates with the song and when a family friend drowned in the ocean surrounding her native Tasmania she was comforted by the version by This Mortal Coil and Elizabeth Fraser's haunting vocals. Larry Beckett regrets the song's association with death as he intended the lyrics to tell a more hopeful story about love. However Tim Buckley's death at 28 and the tragedy of his son Jeff's drowning in 1997 weigh Song To The Siren with a heavy sorrow that comforts those who have lost a loved one. Former Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti lost his childhood friend Rob in an accident when they were both 21. Rob introduced Anthony to the music of John Frusciante whose version of Song To The Siren astounded him when he first heard it. It has a profound effect on him and it speaks to him of fathers and sons communicating across time and space, when one has passed on as in the case of Tim and Jeff Buckley, and Anthony's friend Rob and his father, the man who inspired Anthony's career as a runner. When director Zack Snyder lost his daughter he stopped working on his Justice League film but when he completed it four years on he wanted to include Song To The Siren. Singer Rose Betts who recorded it for him explains how she immersed herself in the song to express the love, longing, grief and loss that it evokes. Musician and singer Dominic Stichbury sets out the musical elements that make this such a simple yet devastatingly powerful song. Producer: Maggie Ayre
We here at the Z&MM3 (we're too cool to spell it all out) haven't ran into too many other people that do what we do (bullshit artists) that we haven't yet met. But, as Ed MacMahon famously said, "I'm not paying that much for no stepped on shit, man! Come on, Jack!! I NEEEED IT!!! GIVE IT UP OR I'M GONNA FUCKIN' CUT YOU!!!!".........no, thats not it.......... it was, "strangers are just friends you haven't met yet", I don't know, some jackass crap like that. Anyway, this week we didn't know our guest, Nick Wheeler of The All American Rejects. Nick is a prolific writer and producer as well as guitarist in a huge band and we talk about being busy during COVID, Lego and the proper way to say LEGO (not LegoS, dipshit), television shows and Zach and Mike both contemplate each others deaths, but, like, in a fun way. Mike also manages to not embarrass Zach too much in front of their new friend (you can't take that guy anywhere). Its basically musicians talking about musician shit (the exact way we while away our lives in backstage rooms) so listen in and contemplate your place in this world........too much? I'm sorry. I've been listening to "This Mortal Coil", lately. I also haven't been wearing my crystal. I'm watching that "Moneyball" movie right now. It's pretty good. Seen it? Black Needle Noise is the current collaboration project of John Fryer. Featuring different musicans and vocalists for every track. John Fryer is the mastermind behind more music than you can imagine. His resume is the longest one I have ever seen. Having produced and or performed with Depeche Mode, Modern English, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Nine Inch Nails, WIRE, and that is just a few names from his catalog. John Fryer is a musical genius who has the midas touch for sound. His current album "Lost in Reflections" is just as groundbreaking and wonderful as any work he started the music world with 40 years ago. Kales and Alyson finished This Mortal Coil. Time to see if Alyson's predictions came true!
Kales and Alyson read the first nine chapters of This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada. Alyson makes predictions and Kales tries not to give the end away.
I had a friend in college—let's call him Michael—who was one of the most interesting people I had ever met up to that point in my life. He was the first person I'd met who had…almost an “aura” about him, for lack of a better word, along with several unique qualities that just made him fascinating to be around. He wasn't what you would call a “goth” per se, but his appearance was striking. His hair would change often, both in color and style, he was typically clad in black, wore eyeliner, a variety of rings and bracelets, and even had black painted fingernails. I met Michael through a mutual friend in the theater department and what I found most interesting was that he didn't seem to be playing a part or persona, this was just who he was at the time. One of the biggest influences Michael had on me was his taste in music. Michael played guitar in a band and introduced me to entire genres of music that I had never heard of before from bands like Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, and Peter Murphy. Another friend at the time—a modern dancer named “Memo”—was actually friends with Peter and years later invited me to see him, along with Nine Inch Nails at a little club in Atlanta—but I'll save that story for another time.Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Pocket Casts | Overcast | RSSOne thing my dad and I had in common was our love of westerns.
