Host Jesse Jackson welcomes London-based journalist Maddie Frye to a “timey-wimey” episode of Set Lusting Bruce, exploring her path to Bruce Springsteen and U2 and how music shaped her spiritual and political awakening. Maddie, who writes about religion, sex, politics, and pop culture, describes growing up near London with parents who loved Bowie, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, and Genesis, discovering U2 at 12–13 through All That You Can't Leave Behind, and finding Springsteen via a 2006 BBC broadcast of the Seeger Sessions that felt both political and spiritually transformative. She discusses working backward through Bruce's catalog, key live shows (including London 2013 and Liverpool with Paul McCartney), family connections to Springsteen, and reflections on religion's relationship with power. Maddie answers the “Thunder Road” question—Mary gets in the car—and shares where to find her Substack, U2 and Us. 00:00 Podcast Welcome 00:45 Meet Maddie 01:55 Growing Up Musical Roots 04:07 Finding Bruce via Seeger 06:23 Seeger Sessions Meaning 10:30 Working Backwards Catalog 14:12 Live Shows Life Changes 18:54 How Many Shows Seen 20:45 Discovering U2 Obsession 23:20 Fandom Numbers Talk 24:52 Writing Religion Politics 25:02 Music Sparks Big Questions 26:24 Faith Through Lyrics 28:00 Reading Toward Belief 29:22 Faithless Research Journey 32:53 Religion Meets Politics 36:13 Radical Gospel Values 41:01 Privilege Luck and Power 44:03 Liverpool Show Memories 46:06 Facing Mortality of Icons 48:24 Thunder Road Mary Answer 49:48 Where to Find Maddie 50:53 Podcast Wrap and Housekeeping Learn more about your ad choices. As you may know, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are opening their new US tour today: the Land of Hope and Dreams tour. Bruce describes the tour as follows: "The tour will be a celebration and defense of the US Constitution, freedom, and the sacred American dream, which is under attack." In celebration of opening day of the tour, I want to share this on the podcast. I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the original and longest members of the E Street Band, Garry W. Tallent - the bass player and OG of the E Street Band. I talked with Garry about this history with Bruce and the band, and about the upcoming tour.Along with Garry, I had the incredible good fortune to interview photojournalist extraordinaire Nicki Germaine. Back in 1974. Nicki had the amazing opportunity to document, in photographs, the now-legendary Liberty Hall shows, right before the album Born to Run hit. Those photos remained buried for nearly 50 years - until now. Nicki has published a remarkable book, "Bruce Springsteen - Liberty Hall." And friends, let me tell you - it is a treasure! But don't take my word for it. Let me quote E Street drummer, the mighty Max Weinberg, who said, "From the first picture, I felt like I was breaking into Tutankhamen's tomb and finding the treasure."I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed interviewing Garry and Nicki. To purchase Bruce Springsteen - Liberty Hall: www.springsteenlibertyhall.comFind Glenn on Substack: glennkirschner.substack.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We're opening the vault on the single most mythical recording in Bruce Springsteen's long career: Electric Nebraska. In January 1982: Bruce locked himself in a bedroom with a four-track and cut ten of the bleakest songs he's ever written. A few months later, he took those songs into the studio with the E Street Band and tried them loud. They didn't work. Bruce ultimately released the original demos, and Nebraska became one of the bleakest albums in the Springsteen catalogue. But what about those full band recordings. For forty years, fans have been debating: do the the tapes even exist? Were they destroyed? Are they better? Even members of the band disagreed on whether they existed. After decades of waiting, we finally have them. In October 2025, Bruce Springsteen dug into the vault and released Electric Nebraska as part of the Nebraska box set. It's the ultimate “what if” in the Boss's entire catalogue. Some of these electric takes absolutely rip, but some lose their special darkness as soon as that big E Street sound kicks in. So join us as we dive into the songs from the musical white whale, the electric ark of the covenant for Springsteen fans: Electric Nebraska. Diving back into our good friend Bruce Springsteen on this episode, looking at the album he did right before he released the big one. Perhaps not as good, but he's still coming into his own and that's what matters. It's wild, it's innocent, and it's the E-Street Shuffle!Originally recorded March 29, 2025.

While legendary guitarist Stevie Van Zandt isn't playing in the E-Street band with Bruce Springsteen, he heads the nonprofit TeachRock, which offers musical lesson plans to teachers at no cost. "Little Steven" talks about a new milestone the organization just reached and its plans for the future, and discusses the band's portrayal in "Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere," which hits theaters today.
To celebrate the release of 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere' we've just dropped our ‘God in Springsteen' bonus episode, previously only available to our Patreon patrons. In it, I hear from film critic and super fan, Andy Godfrey who talks us through his enduring love of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band. We chart Bruce's faith from growing up in the shadow of the Catholic church all the way to arguably his most spiritual song, ‘The Rising'. We'll be looking at his background, what his music has to say about Jesus, and asking; what can an agnostic teach us about our faith? Finding the Faith in the Film begins at 23:49.

Send us a textThis week we discuss Ian Hunter and his 1979 LP You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic. Hunter worked a long time to find success. His band Mott the Hoople were instrumental in advancing glam rock by giving it a rougher edge. David Bowie was such a fan of the band that he even gave them the song "All the Young Dudes" which became the title track for their most popular album, which he also produced. Hunter eventually left Mott the Hoople to concentrate on a solo career and made several albums with Bowie collaborator, and guitarist extraordinaire, Mick Ronson. The results were a series of fine albums, featuring Hunter's (admittedly limited, but expressive voice) against Ronson's classic Marshall stack sound. You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic not only features Ronson, but several members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street band, grounding the album with a solid foundtion. The song "Cleveland Rocks" became an anthem for the birthplace of Rock-n-Roll and "Ships" was even covered by Barry Manilow, becoming one of his biggest hits. But don't let the Manilow cover fool you, You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic is chock full of rock and roll energy and is considered by many as Hunter's crowning achievement. One of the most remarkable and unusual box sets “Tracks II: The Lost Albums, seven previously-unheard Bruce Springsteen records have been released as a nine LP or seven CD collection. Spanning 83 songs - 74 of which have never been released in any form - Tracks II: The Lost Albums offers an unprecedented look into more than three prolific decades of Springsteen's life and work as an artist.Maggie's guest for this conversation is veteran Rock DJ Rita Wilde who shares her insights into the iconic Mr. Springsteen and this amazing release of his music.Seven previously-unheard Bruce Springsteen records will be released for the first time this summer on the widely-rumored and long-anticipated “Tracks II: The Lost Albums,” coming June 27 via Sony Music. A set spanning 83 songs, "The Lost Albums" fill in rich chapters of Springsteen's expansive career timeline — while offering invaluable insight into his life and work as an artist. “'The Lost Albums' were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,” said Springsteen. “I've played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I'm glad you'll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.”From the lo-fi exploration of “LA Garage Sessions '83” — serving as a crucial link between “Nebraska” and “Born in the U.S.A.” — to the drum loop and synthesizer sounds of “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions,” “The Lost Albums” offer unprecedented context into 35 prolific years (1983-2018) of Springsteen's songwriting and home recording. “The ability to record at home whenever I wanted allowed me to go into a wide variety of different musical directions,” Springsteen explained. Throughout the set, that sonic experimentation takes the form of film soundtrack work (for a movie that was never made) on “Faithless,” country combos with pedal steel on “Somewhere North of Nashville,” richly-woven border tales on “Inyo” and orchestra-driven, mid-century noir on “Twilight Hours.” Alongside the announcement of “The Lost Albums,” a first look at the collection also arrives today with “Rain In The River” — which comes from the lost album “Perfect World,” and encapsulates that project's arena-ready E Street flavor. We also dedicate our time together to our mutual friend, the iconic Jim Ladd. James William Ladd (January 17, 1948 – December 17, 2023) was an American disc jockey, radio producer and writer. He was one of the last notable remaining freeform rock DJs in United States commercial radio. We LOVE you Jim! ❤️Host Maggie LePique, a radio veteran since the 1980's at NPR in Kansas City Mo. Brent grew up in the college town of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and is the son of a teacher/school administrator (dad) and a successful real estate broker (mom). On a family trip to NYC when Brent was in grade school, he saw Ethel Merman in Hello, Dolly! This sparked a love of theater and eventually a move to Manhattan to pursue a career in musical theater. Brent has performed off-Broadway, in regional theaters across the US, and on cruise ships worldwide for over ten years. In the late 1990s, Brent left the theater and began working in non-profit administration, spending almost 20 years as the business manager for a Nobel laureate in a research laboratory at Rockefeller University.A friend from his theater days introduced Brent to Asbury Park, NJ, in the early 2000s when the city changed from a gritty ghost town to a Jersey Shore Mecca for gays wanting to nab an affordable house near the beach. After many vacation trips to Asbury, Brent and his husband bought their first shore home in 2011.Brent retired early at the end of the pandemic and started a new career in real estate, following in his mother's footsteps. He enjoys making many new friends, as his mother did, and helping to find the perfect shore home for his clients.Brent enjoys small-town life. Now in his third Asbury home, he lives with his husband Joe, also a former actor turned non-profit professional, and their mini-Aussiedoodle Dickens.SummaryBrent Winborn shares his journey to Asbury Park, New Jersey, highlighting the city's transformation from a gritty ghost town to a vibrant LGBTQ+ mecca. He describes Asbury Park's geographical overview, unique perspectives, and proximity to New York City and Philadelphia. Brent also discusses the climate, which has four seasons but milder winters and longer fall periods. He emphasizes the strong LGBTQ+ community in Asbury Park, the presence of gay bars and hotels, and the sense of community and acceptance. Brent also provides insights into the cost of living, including home prices, rentals, utilities, and groceries. Asbury Park offers diverse housing options, from newer condos to renovated older buildings. The vibrant cultural scene has festivals, music events, theaters, and galleries. The restaurant scene is diverse, with options ranging from dive bar burgers to high-end dining. Asbury Park is a walkable city, and while public transportation is limited, e-scooters and e-bikes are popular for getting around. Safety is not a major concern, and excellent healthcare facilities are nearby. Challenges include parking availability and the need for more hotels. Overall, Asbury Park offers a unique small-town atmosphere with an urban feel. For NJ State Tax info on Social Security, Pensions, 401K's and IRA's Is There an E Street? Where?E Street runs northeast through the New Jersey shore town of Belmar. According to Springsteen lore, the band took its name from the street because original keyboard player David Sancious's mother lived there and allowed the band to rehearse in her house. The titular avenue of "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" is also in Belmar.

John is joined by the legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, and all around rock-and-roll legend Steve Van Zandt, equally famous for his roles as Bruce Springsteen's longtime sidekick and as Silvio Dante in The Sopranos. In their freewheeling conversation, Stevie reflects on how his remarkable, up-and-down, 60-year career as a musician, actor, and activist has, time and again, placed him at or near the center of modern culture — and how his proudest achievement to this day is the unlikely, ultimately heroic part he played in freeing Nelson Mandela. It came roaring out of the car radio speakers like a sonic boom, powered by Dave Clark's “Air Hammer” pulsating drum beats and Denis Payton's beefy saxophone. (Clearly, this was inspirational to Clarence Clemons, when crafting Bruce Springsteen's, E-Street sound.) Mike Smith, on double-tracked lead vocal and Vox organ may have looked like the leader, with his cute Paul McCartney face, but without a doubt this was the drummer's party. Dave Clark, (b.1939) is an entrepreneurial former stunt-man, who parlayed his Tottenham sound into a multi-million dollar concern; he owned all his masters from day one, re-releasing them, to universal acclaim, on CD in 1993; the other song writers in the group shared writing credits with Clark unquestioningly - even if he hadn't written a line. The Dave Clark 5 started as a teenage skiffle group to raise funds for his school football team to go to the Netherlands, and, fittingly, this song became an anthem for several teams throughout the years. Can't you just picture the screaming hordes bellowing GLAD ALL OVER when their team scores a goal?Glad All Over nudged the indomitable Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand off the UK's #1 slot, and the band was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2008. It's the pinnacle of Sunny Songdom - nothing but pure, adrenalized fun.
