Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on Shat the Movies, we're kicking some serious butt with Street Fighter (1994)! Join us as we dive into the live-action adaptation of the iconic video game, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile. It's a chaotic, campy, action-packed ride full of over-the-top performances, questionable fight scenes, and plenty of laughs. Whether you're a fan of the game or just love ‘90s action flicks, tune in for a hilarious deep dive into this cult classic! Plot SummaryIn the 1994 action film Street Fighter, directed by Steven E. de Souza and loosely based on the hit video game series, Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as Colonel Guile, the all-American military hero leading a multinational force to stop the evil warlord General M. Bison, played with over-the-top flair by Raul Julia in his final film role. Set in the fictional nation of Shadaloo, the movie follows Guile's mission to rescue hostages and bring down Bison's plans for world domination. Bison has kidnapped dozens of civilians and demands a massive ransom, threatening their lives. While Guile prepares for a full-scale assault, a tangled web of subplots unfolds: Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter with a personal vendetta against Bison, works undercover to get close to her enemy; meanwhile, hustlers Ryu (Byron Mann) and Ken (Damian Chapa) are caught between working with arms dealer Sagat (Wes Studi) and Guile's forces. Add to the mix Dhalsim, Blanka, Zangief, Cammy, E. Honda, Balrog, and Vega—many of whom are barely recognizable from their video game counterparts—and the film becomes a chaotic patchwork of characters and plot threads. Despite its wildly uneven tone, cheesy dialogue, and loose connection to its source material, Street Fighter has earned cult status thanks to its campy fun and Raul Julia's scene-stealing performance. His portrayal of Bison is operatic, charismatic, and quotable—offering the movie's most memorable moments. Join our podcast review as we revisit this infamous 90s video game adaptation, exploring whether its action, absurd charm, and unintentional comedy make it a guilty pleasure or just a first-round KO. When her TV loses picture at a crucial moment in the show, Janet calls in a cable man named Abel (Anthony LaPaglia), to have cable installed. As this new year is hurled upon us, Cory decided we need to slow things down a bit with what he calls "stony hang movies," AKA movies that are actually about weed for a change. While we have featured movies with Vincent Price mainlining LSD, we have somehow avoided the subject of cannabis itself in the selection of our films altogether, so Cory curated this double feature from the depths of Tubi and Roku's catalogs. In our first movie, Gene Hackman is a crooked LA cop who forces burnt-out rock star Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) to sell 100 keys of primo weed in just 36 hours in CISCO PIKE from Columbia in 1971. This forgotten gem boasts an amazing cast all the way around with Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, TRILOGY OF TERROR) as Cisco's long-suffering girlfriend and Harry Dean Stanton as Cisco's former bandmate. As Cisco makes his way through amazing and sadly gone Los Angeles locations in his frantic quest to unload these bricks of shake, he runs into counterculture characters played by Roscoe Lee Brown, Viva, Joy Bang (MESSIAH OF EVIL), Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from STARSKY AND HUTCH), Severn Darden (BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES), and Allan Arbus (M*A*S*H). Don't get too stoned like Philena. Keep it mellow for this one. Streaming on Prime Video and the Roku Channel And then we have the somewhat less lustrous ARNOLD'S WRECKING CO. (1973) where the annoying cousin Arnold makes marijuana into big business in this satire that may be the worst movie we've ever featured on the podcast. We're going to save most of the commentary on this one for the podcast itself, but it's the brainchild of writer/director/star Steven E. de Souza who went on to write the screenplays for DIE HARD (1988) and 48 HOURS (1982). Now streaming on tubi and Pluto. Cory and Philena give their accounts of the Los Angeles fires, and our speculation on what will happen to TikTok is already woefully out-of-date, but we left it in there anyway (it's worse than we imagined folks). Plus Greg finally gives in to the joys of tubi, and we got listener mail from actual listeners! Thanks for reaching out everybody. We talk a little bit about the passing of David Lynch, but we're saving our love for this artist for our tribute episode to him next month where we discuss the short films of his that are on Criterion Channel, and THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), a film he was so obsessed with that there's an entire documentary about its influence on him. Steven E Popp is an avid dream enthusiast, dedicated to his inner world. Since he is also a gardener and a semi-retired horticulturist, perhaps it's inevitable that he is especially sensitive to the landscapes of his dreams, something most of us ignore. We talk about his sand table creations which he calls Dreamscapes (photos below). Plus we get into his Tibetan Dream yoga practice and meditation. After the break, we talk about lucid dreaming with Max, and then Steve tells us about his earliest dreams, some of which seem to date from before birth. Near the end of the show we take a call from Diane of Santa Cruz who also describes a dream that seems to date from before birth as well. BIO: Steven E. In The Literary Life of Yājñavalkya (SUNY Press, 2024), Steven E. Lindquist investigates the intersections between historical context and literary production in the "life" of Yājñavalkya, the most important ancient Indian literary figure prior to the Buddha. Known for his sharp tongue and deep thought, Yājñavalkya is associated with a number of "firsts" in Indian religious literary history: the first person to discuss brahman and ātman thoroughly; the first to put forth a theory of karma and reincarnation; the first to renounce his household life; and the first to dispute with women in religious debate.  Throughout early Indian history, he was seen as a priestly bearer of ritual authority, a sage of mystical knowledge, and an innovative propagator of philosophical ideas and religious law. Drawing on history, literary studies, ritual studies, Sanskrit philology, narrative studies, and philosophy, Lindquist traces Yājñavalkya's literary life--from his earliest mentions in ritual texts, through his developing biography in the Upaniṣads, and finally to his role as a hoary sage in narrative literature--offering the first detailed monograph on this central figure in early Indian religious and literary history. 64 years ago, The Flintstones became the first ever animated prime time sitcom in the US, and 30 years ago, the live-action film was released. A live action adaptation of The Flintstones first came about in 1985, but it wouldn't be 'til Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment acquired the rights in 1992 that the project started moving forward, but by that point eight writers had already had a crack at the script...Once Spielberg, and mega fan director Brian Levant, got involved, many more writers would have a pass, but only three would ever be credited for their work after the Writer's Guild of America got involved.Credit to the team of writers behind The Flintstones...Steven E. de SouzaDaniel GoldinJoshua GoldinPeter Martin WortmannRobert ConteMitch MarkowitzJeffrey RenoRon OsbourneMichael J. Hey all! We continue our non-Christmas feeling Christmas movies with the pinnacle of the genre, Die Hard. Join Thomas and Frank and this explosive episode! "Die Hard," directed by John McTiernan and released in 1988, remains a defining movie in the action genre. The film stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, an off-duty New York City police officer who finds himself trapped in a Los Angeles skyscraper during a terrorist takeover. The terrorists, led by the sophisticated Hans Gruber (played by Alan Rickman), are unaware of McClane's presence, and he begins a one-man war against them. Story and Setting The narrative of "Die Hard" is straightforward but effective. Set almost entirely in the Nakatomi Plaza, the confined setting adds to the film's intensity. The story is a cat-and-mouse game between McClane and Gruber, with the former using his wits and police training to disrupt the terrorists' plans. The screenplay, written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, expertly mixes action with humor, creating a thrilling yet entertaining experience. Characterization and Performance Bruce Willis's portrayal of John McClane was a career-defining role. He brought a unique blend of everyman vulnerability and toughness to the character, making McClane relatable and likable. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber is equally memorable, providing a sophisticated and chilling contrast to McClane's ruggedness. The supporting cast, including Bonnie Bedelia as McClane's wife and Reginald VelJohnson as a sympathetic LAPD officer, add depth to the story. Action and Cinematography "Die Hard" set new standards for action sequences in cinema. The stunts are spectacular yet believable, and the film avoids the trap of over-the-top theatrics that plague many action movies. The cinematography by Jan de Bont is dynamic, using the skyscraper's geography to create tense and visually interesting scenes. The editing is tight, keeping the pace fast but never confusing. Cultural Impact The movie's impact on popular culture cannot be overstated. It redefined the action genre and introduced a new type of action hero: a regular person in an extraordinary situation. The film's success spawned numerous sequels and influenced countless other action films. "Die Hard" is also known for its quotable lines, most famously McClane's catchphrase, "Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker." Conclusion "Die Hard" is more than just an action movie; it's a well-crafted film that balances suspense, character development, and humor. It's a testament to John McTiernan's direction and the cast's performances that the film remains thrilling and engaging decades after its release. Whether you're a fan of action movies or not, "Die Hard" is a must-watch film that has rightfully earned its status as a classic in American cinema. -------------------- *Check Out All Our Podcasts!* Geek Freaks Podcast: https://linktr.ee/GeekFreaks Disney Moms Gone Wrong: https://linktr.ee/disneymomsgonewrong Challenge Accepted: https://linktr.ee/challengeacceptedgf Headlines: https://tinyurl.com/2p8bvu6d Level Up!: https://linktr.ee/PushingButtonsPodcast Who's Got Next Game: https://tr.ee/wX3t_vGxdO TrekFreaks: https://linktr.ee/TrekFreaks Geek Freaks Interviews: https://linktr.ee/GeekFreaksInterviews Outlast Podcast: https://linktr.ee/OutlastPodcast Round Three: https://linktr.ee/RoundThree From The Pages: https://www.patreon.com/GeekFreakspodcast -------------------- *Hang Out With Us!* Discord: https://discord.gg/6Jrvyb2 Threads: https://www.threads.net/@geekfreakspodcast Twitter: twitter.com/geekfreakspod Facebook: facebook.com/groups/227307812330853/ Instagram: instagram.com/geekfreakspodcast E-mail: thegeekfreakspodcast@gmail.com Twitch: twitch.tv/geekfreakspodcast Site: geekfreakspodcast.com --------------------- *Support Us!* Patreon: https://patreon.com/GeekFreakspodcast Store: redbubble.com/people/GeekFreaks

Its supporting cast features Annette O'Toole, James Remar, Frank McRae, David Patrick Kelly, Sonny Landham, Jonathan Banks and Brion James. The musical score was composed by James Horner.Released by Paramount Pictures on December 8, 1982, 48 Hrs. was one of the most commercially successful films of 1982, and it received widespread acclaim from critics. It launched Murphy's film career, and earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for New Star of the Year – Actor. Roughly since 2007, the assertion that Die Hard -- a movie that takes place at Christmas -- is a Christmas movie has been met with either strong support or opposition. On this episode, along with Ted Haycraft and writer/director Tyler Savage, we discuss the history of the heated debate, while also debating ourselves:- has this debate ever happened IRL, off of Twitter?;- if so, were the debaters online journalists or bots?;- have any of these IRL debates lasted any longer than three minutes?- and did the debate's resolution involve anything other than the participants realizing it all comes down to one's own definition of a “Christmas movie”?Also:- the careers of Steven E. de Souza and John McTiernan;- their assertions in the debate, along with Bruce Willis's and his mom's;- Die Hard's origin as a sequel to a novel that was adapted into The Detective, starring Frank Sinatra;- and the film as a progression in action filmmmaking.Tyler Savage's latest film, Stalker, is currently streaming on Hulu, while his first feature, Inheritance, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. His latest short, “Oddities,” starring Adrienne Barbeau, Logan Miller, and Ariela Barer, is currently making its festival run for 2023.
