Our second episode in Season 2 - and what an extraordinary episode too. My guest, Sanam Naraghi Anderlini, MBE—peace strategist, CEO of the International Civil Society Action Network, one of the few trained female UN peace negotiators, and host of the If You Were in Charge Podcast—had to reschedule this very recording due to a last-minute invitation to attend President Jimmy Carter's funeral. Her connection to one of history's great peacebuilders adds a poignant and inspiring dimension to this conversation. In this episode, Sanam introduces the concept of “quantum identities”—how our sense of self evolves with our environment—and explains why embracing this fluidity is key to fostering belonging. Drawing on nearly 30 years of peace building experience and her insights as a mother of identical twins, she explores how the dynamics of conflict and connection resonate in both personal and global contexts. Through captivating stories and transformative insights, Sanam shares practical strategies to navigate division, embrace complexity, and cultivate belonging in an increasingly fractured world. A powerful conversation that will leave you inspired to connect more deeply with yourself and others. Witnessing the devastating impact of global conflicts firsthand, she dedicated her career to fostering understanding and reconciliation. The Indispensable Role of Women in Peace-Building Sanam highlights the often-overlooked yet critical role women play in peace-building efforts at the community level. Equipped with skills like mediation and relationship-building, women frequently serve as the backbone of peace processes. She underscores the imperative of amplifying women's voices and integrating their perspectives into peace-building initiatives. Inspiring the Next Generation of Peacemakers To ensure the continuity of peace-building efforts, Sanam advocates for empowering younger generations. By providing training, mentorship, and platforms for engagement, we can cultivate a new generation of dedicated peacemakers. Personal Sacrifice and Self-Reflection Sanam candidly discusses the personal sacrifices inherent in her career, including missed family events and social opportunities. She emphasises the importance of self-reflection and self-care in maintaining balance and resilience. A Vision for a Peaceful World Sanam envisions a world where violence is not a default response, but rather a conscious choice. She calls for a cultural shift that prioritises dialogue, compromise, and the courage to engage in peaceful conflict resolution. Empowering Women Leaders For young women aspiring to lead and effect change, Sanam offers invaluable advice. My daughter Micaela has a friend, Sanam, who can make macarons as good as in a pâtisserie. Macarons are so good, and at the same time they seem so fragile, so complicated to make, so mysterious. So I was thrilled when Sanam invited me to make some macarons in her kitchen. Sanam was right, it's not that complicated, in fact it's quite simple, but there is a tricky moment. This is when you incorporate the dry ingredients into the beaten egg whites. You have to be slow, but not too much and make a large movement with the spoon. So today, you are going to hear Sanam talking about the end of the recipe. In the notes that come with the transcript, you will get all the photos taken during the recipe and I will highlight for you in the text all the typical oral sentences that you can hear today. You know spoken French and written French can be very différent. — Tu vas faire quoi maintenant ?

In the latest episode of the HNL Movement Podcast, Andrew welcomes Sanam Rezazadeh, the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Stanford, to share her unique journey into the world of athletic training. Sanam's path was not paved by early sports dominance; in fact, it wasn't until around 5th grade that she tried her hand at basketball. Despite this, her innate passion for sports was always clear. The turning point came with the challenge of knee pain and surgery, where she met an athletic trainer who inspired her with the profound impact of helping people recover from injuries. Sanam's voyage through her educational and career choices is a testament to the power of exploration and seizing opportunities. Initially drawn to physical therapy, her trajectory took a meaningful turn at the University of Hawaii, where she discovered her true calling in athletic training. It was the perfect blend of her desire to aid others and her love for the sports environment. Volunteering in the athletic training room wasn't just a stepping stone; it was a pivotal experience that laid the foundation for her future, allowing her to absorb invaluable skills that would sculpt her into the professional she is today.Reflecting on her growth over seven years at Stanford, Sanam delves into the realities of her role, her aspirations of working in collegiate or professional sports, and the decision-making process that led her to choose Stanford over an NFL internship with the San Francisco 49ers—a choice she has never regretted. Her story is one of continual evolution, embracing the dynamic nature of athletic training, and the satisfaction of reinvention within her career. For anyone intrigued by the intersection of sports, medicine, and personal growth, this episode is not to be missed. As TikTok has taken over the world of social media throughout the last few years, many psychological trends have become increasingly popular, and could be more harmful than helpful.
