Two more events round out the account of Hezekiah's reign in Judah. When Hezekiah becomes sick and learns that he will die, the king does not react to the LORD's Word with despair but with faithful prayer, calling upon the LORD to remember. The LORD's answer through Isaiah is immediate, promising life from death for Hezekiah. The LORD graciously gives Hezekiah a sign that His Word is true, which Hezekiah receives in faith rather than unbelief like his father Ahaz. When Babylonian envoys come to Hezekiah, however, he receives them as a potential military ally, as his father Ahaz had once wrongly trusted in Assyria. When Hezekiah hears of the LORD's coming judgment, he responds with indifference. Hezekiah was a faithful king, to be sure, but even he needed the Savior who would be born from his line, Jesus.  Rev. In recognition of this month's celebrations honoring the end of legal slavery in the United States, we bring you this week a conversation on "A New Birth of Freedom: Commemorating Juneteenth in Kentucky" led by Dr. Patrick Lewis, of the Filson Historical Society, back on June 18, 2021 - the first year that Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday. A Trigg County native, he graduated from Transylvania University and holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Kentucky. He has worked for the National Park Service and the Kentucky Historical Society. Lewis is author of For Slavery and Union: Benjamin Buckner and Kentucky Loyalties in the Civil War (2015). Emancipation in the United States was over 200 years in the making by the time the 13th Amendment officially ended human bondage in 1865. The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law in 2021, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. But earlier versions of the holiday have been celebrated in the South since the mid-1860s. Kentucky recognized the holiday in 2005 through a proclamation by the General Assembly. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln, born in Kentucky in 1809, signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that individuals enslaved in Confederate territories were to be freed. Effective January 1, 1863, the legal status of millions of enslaved individuals in the Southern states changed, but the Proclamation depended heavily on the Union Army for enforcement, with most Southern enslavers ignoring the executive order. Beyond the Confederacy, enslaved people in Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri were unaffected by the Emancipation Proclamation. Being a geographic outlier from the Confederacy, Texas was especially slow and inconsistent in enforcing the Proclamation, and many African Americans remained enslaved. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 and declared all persons previously enslaved in Texas to be freed. Supported by more than 2,000 federal troops, General Granger was finally prepared to enforce the emancipation of Texas's enslaved population. The following year, on the anniversary of the order, free African Americans in Texas organized celebrations to commemorate the occasion, originally calling it “Jubilee Day.” Outside of the South, Maryland and Missouri had both ended slavery within their state boundaries by early 1865. However, it wasn't until the ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865, that slavery was fully abolished in the United States, forcing Kentucky and Delaware to recognize the freedom of their enslaved population. In Texas, joyous events commemorating the end of slavery evolved over the years with one major change: renaming the holiday Juneteenth in the 1890s. Following the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Juneteenth events emerged on a bigger stage throughout the country. In Louisville in 2020, local organizers, activists, and leaders created a Juneteenth festival to celebrate Black culture and resilience. Two years later in 2022, former Mayor Greg Fischer signed an ordinance that declared Juneteenth a city holiday. In Kentucky, the most widespread regional celebration of Jubilee Day is August 8th, a date originating from Paducah and Western Kentucky's diaspora. Today we welcome quilt artist Barbara Ann McCraw. Actually…we welcome her back as we met Barbara in person and interviewed her at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah at her exhibit Life Stories during Quilt Week in 2024. While our conversation was a component of a compilation of stories…we felt that she had so much more to share, hence she joins us today. Barbara grew up on the south side of Chicago and later attended Illinois State University where she earned a degree in English. In 1986 she earned a degree in medical technology and worked at Texas Woman's Univrsity, University of North Texas and UT Southwestern Medical center where  she became pathology supervisor until her retirement in 2000. Barbara's quilts have won numerous awards and many now make their home in private collections. They have been featured in multiple publications and featured in a documentary and a CBS television human interest story.In 2012 Barbara was invited to teach in Tanzania, Africa and two years later she returned there to participate in a quilt honoring Nelson Mandella. Barbara gives large credit for her success to her husband Erine who has helped her both personally and professionally throughout her quilting career. Barbara and Ernie make their home in Texas. (2:20) Barbara talks about how she learned to sew and who was her influence. In this special family-themed episode we're delighted to welcome sisters Sue Nickels and Pat Holly, renowned figures in the quilting community. Both have dedicated more than four decades to the art of quilting, earning numerous accolades and inspiring countless enthusiasts worldwide.​Pat Holly was born in Lafayette, Indiana, during her father's tenure as a flight instructor in the Korean War. Though the family relocated to Michigan when she was just six weeks old, Pat proudly embraces her Hoosier roots. She pursued biology at the University of Michigan and later worked as an electron microscope technician at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital. It was there she met her husband, a pathology resident. Following their marriage, Pat returned to the University of Michigan School of Art to study graphic design, weaving, and fabric design. Her fascination with textile creation and historical textiles from around the world continues to influence her quilting designs. Sue Nickels was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and spent most of her life in Ann Arbor. She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Art. Sue married in 1976 and welcomed her first daughter in 1978. Inspired by her sister Pat's baby quilt gift, Sue embarked on her quilting journey by enrolling in a class at a local quilt shop, where only hand techniques were taught at the time. Over the years, she transitioned to machine quilting and has been teaching machine techniques for more than 30 years. Sue's dedication to quilting has earned her numerous awards, including the 1998 AQS Best of Show for "The Beatles Quilt," a collaboration with Pat.Beyond their collaborative projects, Sue and Pat have contributed significantly to the quilting community through teaching, writing, and sharing their expertise. Sue has authored several books and has developed her own rulers for machine quilting. Pat's work reflects her deep appreciation for historical textiles and her background in graphic design and weaving. (3:10) How did Pat and Sue learn to sew? Their mother of course! Now, twenty-three years into recovery, Mr. Jones is an attorney in the Paducah, Kentucky, office of Boehl, Stopher & Graves and is also the McCracken County Commissioner. She pursued graduate studies in biology at UCLA before moving to Wisconsin in 1992. Isaiah's prophetic ministry began during an economically prosperous time for the people of Judah, but the prophet saw the religious rot underneath. The first chapter of his book lays the groundwork for all of his preaching. Through Isaiah, the LORD calls His people to stand trial for breaking their covenant with Him. Their idolatry has made them rebellious children and left them sick from head to toe. Though they perform sacrifices, they are only going through the motions, with no true faith. In His grace, the LORD calls them back to Himself so that He can cleanse them from their sins and make them His faithful city once more.  Rev.
