She picked up some fabric and zippers and started making striped zippered pouches. When the novelty of pouches wore off, she dove into sewing in other ways. Stockings, home decor, quilts, improv... and along came the Sharrow Quilt. The first design of many to come from Mija Handmade. As you'll see in her patterns, Erin loves to incorporate bold lines with interesting geometry and movement. This is also demonstrated in her current Block of the Month: Learning Curves 2024. Erin and Amanda chatted about the beauty and inspiration that comes from what we see, and in the technical side of writing patterns. Erin views it as its own art, and Amanda agrees. Erin Nichole just released her latest pattern, Grandma Core, and is available now! You can also purchase acrylic templates to help get crisp even curves. They also dive into the changes in priorities as a result of the 2020 lockdowns and what that means for small businesses. Melissa de Leon Mason had a pretty unique introduction to sewing and quilting. While living in Cairo, Egypt early in her marriage, she stumbled upon the textile Souq - a marketplace full of wonderful fabrics in bright colors and bold patterns. That was all it took for her to dive into learning how to sew. A few years of trying to figure it all out, Melissa is now designing foundation paper piecing patterns, teaching classes and workshops and having her quilts hung in national quilt shows such as QuiltCon and the National Quilt Museum. She is no longer looking for towels or discarded materials to stuff into her quilts to make them fluffy. She is in the big leagues! And like many of us, Melissa has a day job. She recently graduated and is a licensed practicing counselor. This plays a factor in her love of teaching. She loves to work with people and support them in their growth. She shares that teaching is fulfilling because she gets to see people walk away with a new skill that they can use to grow their quilting knowledge library. She also offers equity pricing on her classes and workshops. Melissa also recently launched her FPP Design course! The class is online and on-demand. However, sign ups are limited per enrollment period so Melissa can be present and available for her students. So keep an eye out for the next session to open! If you haven't seen Melissa's work, then pop over to her website or Instagram and check it out while you listen! Find Melissa here! Stephanie is the owner of Hillside Stitches. She fell into quilting while pregnant and on bed rest. She tediously cut fabric squares with scissors while in bed, but once her baby was born, she quickly upgraded to a rotary cutter. Since then, she hasn't looked back. As she worked on her skills, she soon found herself self-drafting a pattern to achieve the scrappy pumpkin quilt of her dreams. After many requests for the pattern, Stephanie decided to write it up and sell it. So six-ish years ago, Hillside Stitches was born. Since then, she has written 38 patterns. Her latest pattern, Ex, came about as a forgotten project that would have been a gift for her son's swim teacher/life guard. After her kiddo spied the pattern on her computer and declared it needed to be made for his teacher this year, she finished it up and now we get to have it! Stephanie will be hosting a 4-week Sew-Along for the Ex pattern starting in early October, so head to her Instagram or her website to sign up! And while you're doing that, give the episode a listen! Taiga Bentley is the curator behind the whimsical color-gradient quilts and quilted jackets at House of Taiga. Since she was a young girl, Taiga has always felt drawn to rainbows, color gradients and art. As the owner of Olga Korper Gallery (started by her grandmother), she always has her eye on art. During the lockdown of 2020, Taiga was enamored by the quilt her friend was making, and a whole new world of craft was opened to her. As she browsed the internet for gorgeous fabrics, she knew there was no going back. She immediately purchased herself a sewing machine and began to learn to sew. Her rainbow gradient puff quilt was her first project, and is still a staple in the entertainment of her daughters as an "I Spy" game. Several quilts later, Taiga added quilted color-gradient jackets to her repertoire. Wearable quilts?! Why not! The same fabrics that are fun and eye-catching for children also make beautiful jackets for children and adults alike. Each one unique and tailored to the life of the client. Taiga lives for color and loves to share her passion with the masses. Not only can her quilts and jackets be purchased, but she also curates color-gradient bundles you can buy so you can make your own gorgeous color-gradient quilt! After training at the prestigious, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Rachel acted for a while but then through a mutual friend found out about a TV presenting gig, and that was that! Off she went in search of a new career. After a successful run of broadcast television jobs and hosting live events, her last TV presenting gig was for a craft channel working with lots of different artists selling their products. When this came to an end, it was a natural transition for media and the world of craft to combine when Rachel started CraftyMonkies, a place where people can go and learn a variety of art and sewing, mostly quilting based skills with incredible artists from all around the world via live interactive Zoom classes, or via their monthly member VIP club, and at in-person retreats in both the USA AND UK. After hearing amazing stories from classmates and teachers about how they had overcome blocks in their life using creativity, it was only a matter of time before Rachel started the podcast ‘Breaking the Blocks. The first episode was launched in February 2024 and it continues to grow at a fast pace! Rachel is successfully building a fantastic community of like-minded creative souls who regularly come together to share their passion with each other, and as she says, ‘the door is always open' so go check out CraftyMonkies and the podcast if you feel so inclined! Todd Leavitt, a Vermont transplant to North Carolina, has been on the quilt scene for quite some time now. But it hasn't always been his obvious passion. Todd and his brothers were all taught to sew at young ages by their mother. There was also some sewing during school for a home sciences class. Todd enjoyed sewing, but felt societal pressure to leave it behind and focus on his career. There weren't a lot of openly gay men in the sewing scene. All that changed when Todd experienced a heart-attack at 40. That was the wakeup call he needed to find more balance and start doing more of what he loved. That's where quilting entered his life. Now, he's a pattern designer, Craft-Thirster, Textile Daddy and content creator. The Bear Quilter has a new pattern to be released in October, and fabric kits and notions will be available on his website! Please enjoy this episode and go find Todd if you haven't already! Meagan Guité is a Project Coordinator for Ruby Star Society who loves color, anything vintage and pets. Meagan's mom, Sarah, taught her how to quilt over 15 years ago when she opened a quilt shop. Meagan worked for her mom, and learned to quilt so she could answer questions for customers. Meagan's joy of making things with fabric comes from Sarah, and is something Meagan cherishes even more now. After Sarah passed away in 2021, Meagan found a new energy to create and sew. She quilted through the pain of losing her mother as a way to keep her close. Since then, Meagan quit her corporate job, and in a leap-of-faith moment, she applied for the job posted by Ruby Star Society looking for a project coordinator/social media/marketing expert. She got the job (that she splits with Audrey Savage) and now gets to live in the creative space of quilting and sewing. As the Project Coordinator, Meagan organizes the projects that will be mocked up in new fabric lines being released. She also helps write and create project plans and patterns. The new 10 Years of Magic pattern is one of Meagan's designs. Meagan is clearly an asset to Ruby Star Society and the world of quilting. Her ideas and excitement for design are so inspiring! Alexis Plunkett is the owner/long-armer/photographer of Stitched By Alexis. She began her long-arming journey a year ago and loves to merge her photography background with her quilting. Alexis photographs all of her client quilts as well as her personal projects. She is also a maker for Riley Blake Designs, getting the opportunity to make projects with new fabric several months ahead of their release. Alexis has a soft spot for Christmas and Halloween holiday fabric, so while all of us normal quilters are making spring and summer projects, she's already into the upcoming holidays. Not only is Alexis learning to maximize her learning on her long-arm, she's always up for opportunities to learn new skills and add new techniques to her photography. Alexis does beautiful work and I can't wait for you to see it! Find Alexis Here! website: https://stitchedbyalexis.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stitchedbyalexis/ Want to see more? This episode is all about organizing your space. Amanda got some information from some of you from Instagram about the items you use to organize your fabric. In this episode, Amanda also interviews the CEO of Smart Labels, David Hewlett. Amanda was able to try the Smart Labels before the interview. The hope is to help add to the awesome collection of ways we organize our spaces, and inspire you if you need it. A quilter's space is a sacred space. Organization - whatever that looks like - helps the flow of creativity. Hopefully this is helpful for any of you who want ideas for how to store your supplies in a way that keeps you creating! Bessie Pearl Binding Co. is the result of Karen Wade's retail/business experience and desire to help quilters. Karen saw an opportunity to supply quilters with notions and pre-made bias binding. This allowed her to stay home with her young children and do what she loves. Coming from the world of retail gives Karen a keen eye for what her customers want and need. Her bindings are excellently made with high-quality quilting cotton from manufacturers we know and trust. Her goal is to help quilters finish their projects with one less step to do in the process. Karen loves what she does and loves that she can also be flexible while raising her family. So, go check out her shop while you listen!
