Edtech ThrowdownEpisode 185: How to Teach Students about AIWelcome to the EdTech Throwdown. This is Episode 185 called How to Teach Students about AI. Have you ever tried to teach your students about AI, what it is, and what role it can serve in education and their future lives? This is a tall task and in this episode, we'll discuss how we go about this complex process. This is another episode you don't want to miss. Check it out.Segment 1: For years now we've been involved in trying to get our district to adopt a formal AI policy. Now that this is happening, we're being asked to put together an education program for students. What is AI?What can it do? What can't it do?How can it be used to benefit you while in school? In your future lives? How can it hurt you in school? In your future lives?Segment 2: The Perfect AI Lesson for StudentsWhat is AI?Ask students what they think AI is? Share their thoughts in a digital space like Padlet. Facilitate some discussion.Show a video that explains what it REALLY is. There are tons of good ones, here are a couple we likeFor older students: https://www.ted.com/talks/mustafa_suleyman_what_is_an_ai_anywayFor younger students: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttIOdAdQaUEWhat can AI do?Choose an AI tool to demo (we use ChatGPT). Show three prompts:A bad prompt, something very vague that gives a general and bland response.A better prompt, something that includes lots of detail and specific requests. Show that this yields a much better response from the AI tool.A prompt that gets untrue results. Students need to know that AI tools can give incorrect information, sometimes that it just “makes up” due to lack of other information.ACTIVITY: Have students play with prompts: Ask them to try a bad, vague prompt on purpose. Then ask them to try it again but with more specificity, comparing the results. They share out what they...

How to Ground Yourself in Unpredictable Times

In this video tutorial, I share how I use a notebook to keep myself grounded when things feel chaotic and unpredictable. It's Election Day - this feels needed!I address the following aspects of my notebook system:* Keeping a weekly intentions list to come back to when considering next actions* Dating the daily log and setting up your productivity dashboard* Starting your daily log with critical tasks to accomplish that day* Documenting notes, events, and tasks as the day progresses* Brainstorming ideas with text and sketches* Reviewing the day, noting wins, insights, and gratitudesTake care,MattTranscriptHi, this is Matt. I'm sharing how I ground myself with a notebook, both as a coach and as an individual. It's a space for personal and professional reflections, which is especially helpful during unpredictable times, like today—Election Day, 2024. I thought it'd be appropriate to share this process. This approach is adapted from the *Bullet Journal Method* by Ryder Carroll, with a few tweaks for my needs. Let's start with my weekly intentions. I date the week, then list all I want to accomplish. There's usually more than I can get done, but if something doesn't get completed, I simply move it to the next week. This becomes my weekly log.My daily log captures each day's priorities. Here's yesterday's log. First, I date it—November 4th, a Monday. Then I create a dashboard. This idea comes from the Bullet Journal community; I highlight boxes and draw icons representing productive actions. Not productivity in a “getting things done” sense, but actions aligned with the person I want to become. For example, my dashboard includes icons for writing, meditating, pet care, budgeting, and exercise. Exercise doesn't have to mean lifting weights; yesterday, I did Tai Chi and went for a walk. There's also an icon for a fun activity and another for “unhooking” from unproductive thoughts—using self-talk or breathing techniques to steer clear of unhealthy thinking. It's a valuable habit, especially with the uncertainty around the election. Each day, I identify two or three critical tasks, such as drafting a newsletter or inviting a friend for an event. Throughout the day, I add tasks as they come up—like reserving rooms for next week or picking up cat food. I use different symbols: a dot for tasks and a circle for events. Yesterday, we had a staff meeting to discuss our strategic plan. I like using paper for brainstorming; it helps me play with ideas creatively. For example, I sketched a diagram that a colleague suggested I share on our Padlet. At the end of the day, I log any other thoughts or tasks. For instance, I agreed to be secretary for the Lions Club. I also like to reflect on something successful, an insight, and what I'm grateful for. Last night, I noted “saying yes to what I can,” sharing my drafty thinking, and appreciating the chance to contribute.Today, I'll start with my productivity dashboard again. I use a Leuchtturm B5 notebook, but any notebook works fine, especially when you're starting. You don't need anything fancy. You can also replace icons with initials if you prefer.I've already voted, so I don't need to worry about that. Throughout the day, when I feel stressed or tempted to check election news, I can return to my notebook. For instance, I need to finalize the writing workshop PD and plan for my kids' birthdays. Writing these tasks down increases my commitment to them.Today is open-ended but grounded by this structure. I can even note it's Election Day as an event. This notebook helps me stay focused on the day-to-day and acts as a place for journaling. My wife will vote before work, and I remind myself that we probably won't know results right away.Putting my thoughts and worries on paper keeps me grounded. If I feel restless, I can take the dog for a walk to release energy, then return to my list. I aim to calm myself by being intentional and purposeful with my time.Best wishes, and stay calm in these unpredictable times. Take care. This is a public episode. 135: Pranav Piyush: Why multi-touch attribution is broken and what you should do instead

Humans of Martech

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 53:38

What's up everyone, today I have the pleasure of sitting down with Pranav Piyush, Co-Founder and CEO at Paramark. Summary: Pranav guides us out of the labyrinth of multi-touch attribution under the clear sky of incrementality and causality, urging marketers to focus on whether their efforts genuinely drive sales that wouldn't happen otherwise. Early-stage startups can benefit by prioritizing simple methods like geo-based testing over complex attribution models, allowing intuition to guide resourceful experimentation. By understanding the underlying motivations and true causality behind customer actions, marketers can craft campaigns that resonate deeply and drive real results. As businesses grow, balancing intuition with structured analytics becomes crucial. Holdout tests and marketing mix modeling provide actionable insights, ensuring strategies remain effective in a competitive landscape. This approach transforms marketing from a cost into an investment in sustainable growth, making each dollar count.About PranavPranav started his career at well known brands like PayPal and DropboxHe co-founded Padlet, the popular collaboration app to make school less boringHe's former Head of Growth at Magento and Pilot.com before becoming VP of Marketing at BILLHe's also a Reforge Instructor for a new marketing measurement courseAnd in March of last year, Pranav co-founded Paramark to help marketers measure and forecast the impact of their investmentsWhat's More Valuable? Analytical Skills or Creative Taste?Marketing's creative nature often gets overshadowed by the obsession with data. Recently, HubSpot's co-founder Brian Halligan suggested that marketers with good taste are undervalued compared to those with analytical skills. Pranav agrees, arguing that creativity now drives the most significant impact in marketing. We often question the overuse of the term "data-driven" in marketing, suggesting a shift towards being more "creatively driven." Pranav responds, arguing that data-driven and data-informed are all kind of bullshit. Relying solely on being "data-informed" is not sufficient. He emphasizes that without the ability to discern the success of a creative idea through data, creativity alone falls short.Marketers face the challenge of making memorable impressions on people they've never met, and this requires innovation and creativity. While data is essential, Pranav notes that many marketers don't truly understand the depth of analytical skills. True data literacy involves grasping complex concepts like correlation and causation, which are often missing in marketers' education. Pranav points out that the dichotomy between creativity and analytics is overly simplistic. Marketers need to integrate both skills. This blend is crucial not only in marketing but in other business functions like product development. He uses the example of launching a feature and gauging its success. If only 10% of the customer base uses it, understanding the broader impact on adoption, revenue, and retention is essential.Despite recognizing the importance of analytical skills, Pranav emphasizes that good taste in marketing offers a unique advantage. Creativity leads to building compelling campaigns that resonate more profoundly with audiences. This insight suggests that while data provides valuable insights, it is creativity that ultimately distinguishes successful marketing efforts. Pranav further highlights the importance of rigorous testing and measurement. A successful feature or campaign isn't just about positive feedback; it needs to contribute to tangible business outcomes, such as increased revenue or cost savings. Without proper measurement, the value of creative initiatives remains unclear.Key takeaway: To truly excel in marketing, you need to embrace a harmonious balance between analytical skills and creative taste. This means honing your ability to interpret data while also nurturing your creative instincts to craft memorable campaigns. Instead of relying solely on data or creativity, focus on integrating these skills. Use data to measure the success of your creative ideas, ensuring they lead to meaningful business outcomes like increased revenue or customer retention. By blending data literacy with creative insight, you'll develop campaigns that resonate deeply and drive tangible results.Understanding Incrementality in MarketingWe often hear marketers claiming they understand ROI and reporting, yet the concept of incrementality often eludes them. Pranav sheds light on this by differentiating between attribution and incrementality. Attribution, as he explains, is rooted in the idea of cause and effect. However, its usage has been diluted over time, losing its original meaning.Pranav appreciates our provided definition of incrementality: business results from marketing campaigns or channels that wouldn't have occurred otherwise. He elaborates that if a prospect would have purchased a product without the influence of marketing, then that marketing effort isn't incremental. Conversely, if a prospect's decision to buy is directly influenced by marketing, then that effort is incremental. He emphasizes the importance of understanding incrementality beyond traditional marketing channels, especially in B2B contexts. This involves considering scaled sales channels, partner channels, and affiliate channels. The essence of incrementality lies in recognizing the true impact of marketing efforts on sales and other business outcomes.Pranav's insights underscore the need for marketers to move beyond surface-level metrics and understand the deeper implications of their strategies. By focusing on incrementality, they can more accurately measure the effectiveness of their campaigns and make informed decisions that drive real business growth.Key takeaway: Focus on incrementality to truly gauge your marketing impact. Instead of just relying on attribution metrics, assess whether your efforts genuinely drive sales that wouldn't have happened otherwise. By understanding and applying incrementality across all channels, you can refine your strategies and foster real business growth.Unpacking Multi-Touch AttributionMulti-touch attribution (MTA) often gets hailed as the holy grail of marketing measurement. Many believe it's essential to solve attribution by capturing all touchpoints. However, Pranav argues that the obsession with MTA overlooks fundamental issues, particularly around causality. When discussing attribution, we need to understand cause and effect. Pranav illustrates this with a simple example: if someone clicks on a Google link and converts, did that click cause the conversion? Sometimes it does, but other times it doesn't. He emphasizes the need to ask, "What prompted the search in the first place?" Without knowing this, we aren't truly understanding causality. We're merely observing sequences of actions without grasping their underlying motivations.Pranav criticizes the current approach to MTA, which often amounts to behavioral analytics. This method logs sequences like A led to B led to C, but it doesn't clarify if A caused B. This lack of clarity is compounded by pressures on marketing and analytics teams to produce quick results, pushing them towards convenient but superficial solutions. The martech industry, according to Pranav, has profited from building easy, superficial tools rather than delving into the complex but necessary task of understanding true causality. He believes this approach must change for the industry to advance meaningfully. By focusing on more robust methodologies, marketers can gain genuine insights into the effectiveness of their campaigns.

In this episode of Digital Learning Today, host Jeffrey Bradbury interviews Diane Manser, an English teacher and author, about the emotional challenges of teaching. Manser discusses the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotional impact of teaching, as well as strategies for building relationships with students and colleagues. She also shares some technology tools she uses in her classroom, such as ThingLink and Padlet, to engage students and facilitate discussions. The episode concludes with the announcement that Manser will be joining Bradbury as a co-host on future episodes of the podcast. In This Episode … Teaching is often viewed strictly as a content profession, but it is equally an emotional profession. Teachers can experience a range of emotions within their school day, including inferiority, defensiveness, reactions to student behaviors, fulfillment, enjoyment, internal rewards, and confidence. Additionally, teachers can walk into their work day carrying stress or worry, but needing to put on a brave face for the sake of a controlled teaching day. Teachers may be positioned to be in charge, but they are not in control. Our students' behavior communicates something to us. We can implement strategies--student awareness, intrapersonal awareness, language choice--that will help us "lower the volume" on taking unfavorable situations personally. The need for teachers to know themselves well on a deeper level, so they can be resilient in the classroom and maintain teaching with joy and confidence. In this episode, we'll talk about the ever popular Flip, formerly known as Flipgrid, as it is set to transition to Microsoft obscurity. Video discussions are a valuable tool, whether you'll have access to Flip or not and this episode will teach you about them! This is another episode you don't want to miss, check it out!Segment 1: Narrative: I recently had a teacher ask “what do you recommend we use in place of Flipgrid next year? You can even make it collaborative, allowing your students to expand and enhance it with their creativity. Once you're ready, hit publish to share your Padlet. It can be integrated with apps like Google Classroom and various LMS options. Additionally, Padlet can be embedded on blogs or school websites.Canva Presentations and video insert. This summer, I've set a goal to really lean into my writing life. I want to write more regularly, tackle some writing projects, write outside the box and boost my writing communities, too.  So, I've joined two very different writing groups and have been reflecting on what I like about each, what I've learned about the process and what really works for me.  Surprisingly, I've realized how much I like writing to a prompt…tiny clips of song lyrics, to be exact. These nuggets of inspiration are shockingly helpful in showing up to the page and this got me thinking: book quotes can do the same.  I LOVE collecting compelling quotes from the books I read. I have multiple quote notebooks, a Google Doc collection and even digital Keep notes and a Padlet wall full of them.  Today, I am bringing you five book quotes that are sure to send you straight to your notebook. I'll share the quote, the book it's from and what it might spark for you. This just might be my favorite episode yet! It's that sneaky second gifting season of the year (dads, grads, retirements, anniversaries…you get it!), and we're here to answer your calls for help. Ooh, speaking of calls: Want to leave us a voicemail at 833-632-5463 and share any thoughts/feelings that demand our podcasting attention?   If it's time to gift someone a watch: Max Bill for Junghans and Baume & Mercier Classima are classics and about $1k. Uniform Wares has minimalist vibes and top out around $500. Check out Fewer Finer for some vintage options! We also recommend looking into a sporty/casual vintage watch from Casio or Seiko—Foundwell and eBay are great places to explore (this one, this one!). Also: Swatch does custom. If you're looking for a watch for a little, Flik Flak's still got it (see: their recent Hodinkee collaboration), and Parchie and Mini Kyomo are cute for kids, too. For true watch experts, turn to Hodinkee and Dimepiece.   For men turning 40 whose watch taste is too $$$: We love the idea of a signet ring, and Kathryn Bentley does great ones. We also recommend a record player (and personally endorse Plus Audio and Technics by Panasonic Direct Drive Player System via eBay). To add to the record collection, maybe gift a subscription to Vinyl Me Please or round-up albums that came out during their birth year. Related gift: fancy speakers like the ones by Oda. Nice luggage is also a good call—we love Want Les Essentiels, Porter-Yoshida, and classics like Rimowa, Tumi, and Calpak. For hobby gifts, how about a surfboard, a film camera from Photodom, ceramics classes (s/o to Artshack near us!), or pickleball gear from Recess or Nettie (on the topic of pickleball, this New York mag profile of Connor Pardoe). Last but not least, NORMALIZE GIVING MEN FLOWERS!    For retirement gifts: Ask close coworkers to participate in something personal—maybe use Tribute or Padlet or go old-school and collect pictures and letters to make a scrapbook. We also love Storyworth! Or how's about helping them get oriented with a new hobby: For the dad in our VM, maybe a Backroads Bike Tour or a Bianchi bike (find them and other snazzy bikes used on Bike Exchange). There's also personal training: For a virtual option, check out Future (a good review).    When someone's having a baby but not their first one: Set the parent up with a massage (maybe an at-home one through Zeel) or food delivery from Ipsa, Three Owls, or The Culinistas. Treat them to a robe, slippers, a weighted blanket from Bearaby, or a bed tray (Chairish and 1stdibs for cool vintage ones and West Elm, and Offi for new ones) Or: Get something to keep the sibling busy! Non-messy craft projects like needlepoint/sewing kits (love Unwind Studio and LittleExplorersPlay) or a subscription to The Picture Book Club. For the new baby, what about a not-hand-me-down, home-from-the-hospital look from Makie or Lewis? Or something keepsake that second (and third and fourth) kids tend to get less of like a handknit blankie or a puzzle name stool from Damhorst Toys.   What to maybe, possibly ask for when you move into a new home: A return-address stamp from Paper Source or custom house numbers from House Number Lab or Casson. Outdoor stuff can be pricier than expected, so ask for plants from Fast Growing Trees, Plant Gem, and David Austin Roses, a local-nursery gift card, or gardening tools from The Floral Society or Terrain. What about a Solo Stove or a Barebones Living Portable 30" Fire Pit? Or a grill! We like the Weber Spirit II E-210 LP and the Lodge Sportsman's Pro Cast Iron Grill. Get into composting with an indoor bin from Bamboozle. Entertaining stuff is a good call—think an Insalata Serving Bowl or platters from Conran Shop, Bitossi Home, Christian Lacroix, Farmhouse Pottery, vintage spongeware from The Six Bells, and vintage Limoges on Etsy. Ooh, and framing, c/o your local frame shop or Framebridge! Finally, stools: Artek, TipToe, Bed Bath & Beyond, Metal Lab, and ChezRai ones specifically. For other relevant recs, check out our Secret Menu wedding-registry guide. Share your gift ideas or quandries with us at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, or @athingortwohq.
