In today's episode, Hollywood legend Ed Begley Jr. shares the unforgettable audition that changed his career trajectory. Originally reading for a minor role on the groundbreaking series St. Elsewhere, Ed didn't land the part he auditioned for—but his performance made such an impression on the writers that they created the role of Dr. Peter White, making him a series regular. It's a testament to the unpredictable magic of auditions and the importance of showing up fully, no matter the size of the part. With over 270 TV credits, 7 Emmy nominations, and a Golden Globe nod, Ed has become a fixture of film and television. He reflects on longevity, craft, and the timeless advice of his mentor Roy London, reminding actors to explore how their characters process pain—whether in comedy or drama.

In this powerhouse episode of BizNinja Entrepreneur Radio, host Tyler Jorgenson welcomes legendary actor, environmental advocate, and accidental entrepreneur Ed Begley Jr. to the show. While many know him from films and television, Ed's decades-long commitment to clean living and sustainability might surprise you. From riding his bike to the Oscars to bottling eco-friendly cleaning products in his garage, Ed proves that walking the green talk can be both impactful and entertaining.Ed takes us on a time-traveling journey through his early adoption of electric cars, his adventures with faulty toner cartridges and primitive solar systems, and the birth of his eco-business, Begley's Earth Responsible Products. His stories are equal parts hilarious and humbling—from delivering products himself in his electric car to learning the hard way about doing too much, too fast. He shares how he learned to value not just environmental resources, but his own time and energy as a resource, too. With wisdom drawn from smoggy childhoods, big-screen sets, and homegrown sustainability hacks, Ed dishes out heartfelt advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. His approach to advocacy is refreshingly relatable: lead by example, stay authentic, and do what you can—without burning out. Whether you're launching a brand or just trying to live cleaner, Ed's message is clear: live simply so that others can simply live.TakeawaysStart Small, Stay Consistent: Ed's clean-living journey began in 1970 with vinegar and baking soda. Sometimes the simplest steps lead to lifelong impact. You Can't Make Gasoline on Your Roof: But you can make solar power—and Ed's been powering his life and car this way for decades.Walk the Talk, Quietly: Ed didn't shout about his values—he just biked to the Oscars and let the media catch on. Authenticity speaks louder than megaphones. From Garage to Costco: His product line started in his garage (with help from his daughters!) and is now sold nationwide. Proof that green businesses can scale. You're a Resource Too: Entrepreneurs must protect their own time and energy like any precious environmental resource.Lead with Common Ground: Don't want to debate climate change? Focus on clean air, energy savings, and local impact. Change doesn't always need a label.

From mockumentaries to dramas to situation comedies, Ed Begley Jr. has done it all. His truly one-of-a-kind acting career has seen him work with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, and more. But beyond his impressive resume, Ed Begley Jr. is also known for his environmental activism. He's probably the most famous person to have owned some version of an electric vehicle for a lot longer than most people have even been aware of EVs. Ed has been been committed to environmental conservation since at least the 1970s, and he's designed his life so that it's as free of fossil fuels as possible, with solar panels on the roof, an e-bike in the garage, and a house chosen for its proximity to transit. Notably, he's taken the LA Metro to the Academy Awards, making a statement in an industry and a city where fancy cars and conspicuous consumption are signs of success. In this fun conversation, Ed Begley Jr. invites us into his home to talk about his work, his activism, and his philosophy about life. *** Support The War on Cars on Patreon and receive access to ad-free versions of all our episodes, special bonus content, stickers, merch discounts, and more. It's the SPOOOoooOOOkiest month, so why not check out the surprisingly un-spooky (and, honestly, pretty unfunny) TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 on the world's finest chronological Carol Kane podcast PRAISING KANE? Starring Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley Jr. as two hapless tabloid reporters forced to go to Transylvania to work on a story about monster sightings, the film has supporting performances from Joseph Bologna, John Byner, Michael Richards, Jeffrey Jones (ugh), an extremely underutilized Geena Davis and - of course - Carol Kane! Directed by frequent Mel Brooks collaborator Rudy De Luca and bankrolled by the Dow chemical company (?) it's plenty weird. How weird? Let's find out! The post Episode 244 – Praising Kane – Transylvania 6-5000 (1985) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

For 57 years, Ed Begley Jr. has been in literally hundreds of your favorite movies and television shows. And during those years, he's also established himself as one of the most prominent voices in Hollywood on environmental sustainability and climate action. Now, he's with a new memoir, To the Temple of Tranquility…And Step On It!, which recounts his life in both entertainment and environmental and climate advocate. Ed joins us on the show this week to discuss his life and career. We talk about his early days as a stand up comic, how he initially got into activism, his friendship with Cesar Chavez, mulling over bizarre clean energy ideas with Marlon Brando, finding common ground with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and why 1970s Los Angeles was such a great time and place for activism in entertainment. We also discuss his more recent roles in shows like Better Call Saul and why more great climate storytelling is happening, like with his friend Paul Schrader's 2017 film First Reformed.
