If you've listened to AnthroDish regularly over the last few years, you'll know that Ren Navarro is a champion of diversity and inclusion within the beer industry and beyond. When I first interviewed Ren back in 2020, we looked at her Canadian consulting services through B.Diversity, and the diversity problem within craft beer in Ontario. We've lived truly a lifetime of unprecedented times since then: we saw the proliferation of Black Lives Matter movements and heavy pressure for more equitable change, and DEI initiatives take stronger footing through many industries reckoning with their own complicity. Yet… we're also living in a period where affirmative action has been struck down in America, and DEI is making headlines because CEOs have decided they're done with it.  So what does this mean for people like Ren who have built their businesses through this necessary and ongoing work? Who helps the activists pushing for safer and more supportive communities? What do the follow-up sessions look like for breweries that had DEI consults? Ren's here to explore these questions, as well as the very real challenges that come with this work for her: burnout in a landscape where her job is good when things are bad in the world. When choosing guests for The Crafty Pint Podcast, we favour people we know have good stories to tell (which, in fairness, doesn't discount many people working in beer) and a particular area of knowledge, expertise or insight to share with listeners and viewers. In the case of Amanda Baker – Bakes to most – they were high on our priority list but leapt to the top when Will spotted something odd going on with the Instagram account Lost Palms, the Gold Coast brewery at which they work. Everything the brewery had posted in seven years disappeared overnight to be replaced by a series of stark, mysterious posts. Attention captured, Will suggested we get Bakes on straight away, which technically meant they were coming on for a discussion around social media, marketing and branding. But, as anyone who knows Bakes knows, we were never going to pin them down to something as straightforward as that. So, settle in for a chat that, yes, looks at the new approach Lost Palms are taking and what sparked the change, but also examines branding more widely – not least as they're involved in the launch of new energy drink SAYG. A year on from Bakes' appearance in one of our most widely read and discussed articles of 2023, Chronically Crafty, which explored working in beer with a chronic medical condition, we reflect on the impact that had and how to keep those discussions going. Meanwhile, Bakes' recent trip to North America, where they stayed with meme legend, Wort Wrangler, brewed collabs with Seek Beer Co and Dominion City, forced themselves onto the Jester King workforce, and met up with Ren Navarro, the founder of Beer Diversity (now B.Diversity), sparks a conversation about community and diversity in beer. Essentially, it's a few episodes rolled into one, with a preamble in which we discuss the phenomenal number of Oktoberfests in Australia this year, New South Wales' first off-grid brewery, Mick Wüst's deep dive into life in a sensory lab, and opening registrations for Pint of Origin 2025. Alcohol has been navigating a new social landscape in America and Canada since COVID hit. While there were signs that alcohol consumption was rising with lockdowns, there's also been more spaces for conversation around the use of alcohol as a drug, or trickier relationships with drinking and binge drinking, amidst a backdrop of the drug use crisis that is sweeping across families of all types with changes in drug supply and challenges with cost of living. It is a lot to navigate, so I brought back my favourite beer and diversity expert to talk through it, Ren Navarro. Ren runs B.Diversity Group, and is certified by some of the world's largest alcohol programs, including Prud'homme, WSET, Cicerone, and AFicioNAdo (an alcohol free certification). She has appeared on national television talking about the historical aspects and new trends in alcohol, and the benefits of stronger communities. In 2018, Ren created Beer. Diversity., a company and advocacy group whose focus was for folks to be able to have open conversations, one beer at a time. With the evolution of this company into non-alcoholic spheres, she introduced B.Diversity in early 2023. This amalgamation aims to create safer spaces in which to have more open and honest conversations to support and create meaningful change in a multitude of industries. Today she's on the show to speak to what has shifted with the beer industry since she was last on in early 2020 (pre-COVID, which is wild!), and her transition into championing diversity and inclusion through working with breweries to train and aid those affected by the opioid and drug crisis in Canada. We also discuss the variety of non-alcoholic beverages on the market, along with how to learn about and access them, and the lessons she's learned as she's evolved her company while continuing to bring diversity to the forefront of learning and working relationships. Thankfully I can get some of these where I am. Unibroue - Ce n'est pas le fin du monde, Wellington Brewery - Chocolate milk stout, and Muskoka Brewery - Winter beard are their choices https://more.ctv.ca/the-social/life/trendy-beer-flavours-for-winter.html About 10 miles north of Downtown Philadelphia you'll find a new and small Native American owned brewery called Big Chief Brewing. While the shutdowns stalled their growth in their new spot, they're now settling in and you can stop in for a Hazy Hiawatha IPA, Scout Stout, or Old Pale Face (to name a few). Stop in if you're in the area and check them out at http://bigchiefbrewing.com/ And a sight to behold I'm sure. In Smiths Grove, Kentucky, you'll find a 30-foot tall Christmas tree made out of bourbon barrels! Cody & Jon Vincent, otherwise known as The Bourbon Barrel Brothers, put it up and decorated it with the help of family. The project reportedly took them four days using 200 barrels, over 2,000 lights and weighs around 25,000 pounds. Unfortunately, it's not full of bourbon, but it will stay up until early January for travelers to come bask in its glow - https://www.southernliving.com/news/bourbon-barrel-christmas-tree-edmonson-county-ky The Boozebuddy Update is now on video! This is Beth Demmon, and you’re listening to the Good Beer Hunting podcast. At the end of every year, it’s common for publications to put together roundups of notable people who’ve made their mark: who you should read, who you should listen to, who you should follow on social media, and so on. And every year, while those mentioned absolutely merit recognition for their work, some people also deserving of attention inevitably get missed. Any list covering the craft beer industry that doesn’t include Ren Navarro falls short (Good Beer Hunting’s end-of-year Signifiers included). The Canadian beer equity advocate is prominent in conversations on Twitter and Canadian outlets, and her tireless efforts to make beer a better place unquestionably deserve the support and attention of people everywhere. As a queer Black woman who seeks to educate, enlighten, and engage, Navarro calls herself a “reluctant advocate” as one of the only people in her immediate area to consistently work towards a more equitable beer community. By calling for actions that incorporate intersectionality in diversity efforts and demanding accountability from peers in the craft beer space, she encourages individuals and breweries to embrace uncomfortable revelations that can drive improvement, despite the challenges and feelings these types of conversations may bring up. She mostly works alone, and while the pandemic has disrupted her ability to educate face-to-face, she’s grateful for the transparency and openness that virtual spaces allow for, giving people the opportunity to raise hard questions in a safe, judgment-free way. In our conversation, we’ll talk about her role in craft beer, how Canada compares—and contrasts—with the United States when it comes to its beer scene, and how social justice movements took off last year and then stagnated. We’ll also discuss the importance of people speaking from within their communities rather than on behalf of a community, how one can earn the title of ally rather than bestow it upon themselves, how concepts like accessibility and inclusion remain closely related, and who she looks to as changemakers of the future. Keep an ear out for numerous new initiatives she has planned for 2021. Navarro knows that we can all do better and be better—now, it’s time to find out how. Listen in.

When you think craft beer, what - or who - is most likely coming to mind? It's an industry that is so dominated by straight white dudes, but that doesn't mean it needs to stay that way. My guest this week, Ren Navarro, is working on improving diversity in beer. Navarro is one of the most well-respected members of the Ontario beer industry, and has worked for years as the face of breweries within her respective sales regions and uses her fervent love of craft beer to bring it towards more diverse audiences. Navarro is on the front-lines to initiate change both in and out of the industry. Using her perspective as a queer black woman within the industry, she has talked extensively about diversity in craft beer through her company, Beer.Diversity. Ren’s goal to educate, enlighten, and make craft beer approachable for a more diverse audience. Additionally, Ren is the co-founder and former co-organizer of the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, which is a Toronto-based monthly beer event that provides a safe and relaxing atmosphere for female-identified people.  Today she’s on the show talking about her work through Beer.Diversity and we explore the culture around craft beer in Ontario. She highlights some ways in which breweries and the industry are starting to shift towards more diverse audiences, and the ways in which diversity makes for better beer and better working environments. Can't wait for you to listen, Ren was the most fun to interview!  Learn More About Ren: Beer Diversity Website Instagram: @beer_diversity  Twitter: @35mmMonkey

They discuss the challenges of being the first female publisher at a small-town paper, how Vankleek Hill has changed since Beau’s arrived, and much more -- expect the unexpected.    Finally, Steve joins the Toronto-based writer and beer expert Crystal Luxmore to discuss her favourite holiday beers.    Lagered Tales is a bi-weekly check-in from your friends at the employee-owned Canadian craft brewery Beau’s. On this night, restauranteur & food photographer Kyla Zanardi and chef & instagram star Christine Flynn brought together a diverse cross section of women working in the food industry to discuss what it means to be female in this line of work. What resulted was the start of a productive discussion on how women can support themselves and each other while trying to grow their careers. Have a listen to hear thoughts from Ren Navarro, beer rep & co-founder of the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, Jennfier Commins, tea sommelier & founder/CEO of Pluck Tea Inc, Johanna Lowe, food & prop stylist, and Hassel Aviles, food entrepreneur & founder of the former Toronto Underground Market. The phrase madly in love with beer doesn't even begin to describe Ren Navarro. As one of the five founders of The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, you would guess that she has been known to imbibe in fermented hops and barley from time to time, but she is so much more than just a gal who drinks beer. The Society is pretty focused on being a part of a fully inclusive environment and while they stand behind the ladies only until midnight rule it isn't a hard stop. "You identify as a woman, you like beer. Come on down". SOBDL is not just about beer either. They also are proud supporters of the Canadian Women's Foundation and as Ren puts it "Use their powers for good" by drinking beer and supporting the cause "how could you go wrong with that?" It's added up to a lot of support raising more than $10,000 for the charity since they started. "How is it that the beer industry says that women don't drink beer?" -Ren Navarro Telling us that her "inner artist likes the creation" of beer is just the beginning of the flavour notes that describe Ren. A passionate believer that you can crush stereotypes and try new things she advocates for the "just go on do it approach". Motivated by a curious mind and a love for all things beer and photography related she is filling her days with a long list of different creative pursuits that keep her excited about life. "Life is too short to be like: I just did one thing". "I feel like if I’d done it differently I wouldn’t have ended up here" Ren Navarro You can find Ren on Twitter or Instagram. Follow her, you won't be disappointed. Don’t forget to show some love submit a comment or review! Subscribe to get alerts on new episodes and more or find us on iTunes, Soundcloud, or Stitcher.
