Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Gregory Retallack is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. His research has examined the fossil record of soils through major events in Earth history, extending back some 4.6 billion years. He is the author of books like “Soils of the past: an introduction to paleopedology”, and “Soil grown tall: the epic saga of life from earth”. In this episode, we talk about paleopedology. We start by talking about what it is, how we analyze fossil soils, what information we can get from them, and the factors that play a role in soil formation. We discuss the coevolution of life and earth, the study of the soils of barren planets, the biosignatures of life that we can find geologically, and the evolution of plants. We also talk about studying climate change over the course of Earth's history through the soil, and what we can learn about paleoenvironments. Finally, we discuss the effects of soil on the taste of wine and other aspects of agriculture. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Jemima Retallack and Mitchell Thompson are the directors of Retallack Thompson, a Sydney-based architecture practice seeking to create timeless and enduring architecture, interior and landscape design. In this episode, Jemima, Mitchell and Dave discussed: How to make the most of every project opportunity in the early years of practice, from realising that briefs and budgets will often expand and change from what clients present during the first meeting, to taking on smaller projects as a way to explore ideas, develop relationships or refine internal processes. Why Jemima and Mitchell believe that percentage-based fees can create an appearance of conflict of interest that can harm the architect-client relationship, impact the client experience and reduce potential referrals. The unexpected benefits of marketing to other architects; from valuable overflow referrals to collaborations with larger practices on public projects. What Jemima and Mitchell learned about achieving work-life balance from their experiences working in leading practices earlier in their careers, and how they have structured their practice to maximise both the quality of their work and the time they can spend with their kids. The negative influence Australia's real estate industry, with its emphasis on resale value, has had on the creative ambitions of residential clients. Jemima and Mitchell share how they encourage their clients to be brave with their homes, and worry less about future owners and more about their own enjoyment. My guest today is Dr Mary Retallack and according to Mary, being a leader requires building resilience. Mary also noted that persistence and grit are necessary components in a leader's tool kit. Making sure to create healthy boundaries (making sure you are ok), focusing your energies on those that want to hear what you have to say, valuing your time by setting clear boundaries and a continued focus and increasing the representation of women in leadership roles in the Australian agriculture context. Matthew Retallack is one of the sharpest and most deeply focused fitness professionals I have met in my lifetime. His background working as an osteopath and a personal trainer coupled with his interests in mixed martial arts yoga create his incredibly unique perspective on movement and it’s connection to the body and our life. One of the standout elements of how Matthew discusses movement is his ability to tie it into almost anything he relates to, which made this conversation incredibly exciting as we jumped into some really interesting tangents along the way. To connect further with Matthew and learn more about his work, you can head over to his Instagram account and drop him a line there. @mretmovement Be sure to share this episode with friends if you enjoyed listening, and of course please leave us a review if you liked what you heard!

How can political modernization reinforce authoritarianism? What brought middle-class liberals and conservative monarchists to make common cause in late 19th- and early 20th-century Germany? How did a political culture defined by anti-socialism and anti-semitism emerge? In his new book Red Saxony: Election Battles and the Spectre of Democracy in Germany, 1860 to 1918 (Oxford University Press, 2017), James Retallack uses a regional lens to rethink assumptions about Germany’s changing political culture over the span of six decades. By tracing election battles and suffrage debates, Jim illuminates a reciprocal relationship between political modernization and authoritarianism with important implications for the present day. Jim Retallack is a Professor of History and German Studies at University of Toronto. He has authored and edited a number of books about German nationalism, anti-Semitism, elections, and historiography. Retallack is also the general editor of Oxford Studies in Modern European History and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. A website of supplementary visuals, maps, and statistics for Red Saxony can be found here. Newquay Mayor rides the waves for charity Newquay Mayor Andy Hannan has raised more money for his chosen charity “The Joe Way Appeal” this time going to the Newquay surf life saving club. Joe Way, who was born with a rare genetic condition, was labelled a 'miracle boy' after surviving meningitis, a potentially deadly skin reaction, and numerous superbugs as well as complete organ failure. He died three years ago, after a rapid deterioration in health. His website has been set up to tell his story, raise awareness of his conditions and help raise money for 20 charities mainly at the now annual Joe Way paddle for life. The Loop Flowrider at Retallack resort and Spa hosted the UK championships this weekend attracting the cream of Europe’s flowriders and surfers. The team at the loop invited Newquay Mayor Andy Hannan to come up and try Cornwall's fastest growing extreme sport to help raise funds for his chosen charity the Joe Way appeal. Mayor Hannan was delighted to have the opportunity to raise funds this time for the Newquay surf life saving club and was joined by some of the members in a flow riding session. Andy Hannan said “This is a great facility and another example of how businesses can attract people to Cornwall. We had a great time and I would highly recommend this as a great family day out”. A raffle was held with surf lessons donated by the Quicksilver surf school at South Fistral Mayor Hannan will be at the Japanese car show at Hendra Holiday Park this Sunday which is raising money for Shelter box in aid of the people of the Japanese earth quake Matt Way Joe’s Dad said “we would like to thank the team at the flowrider for giving us this opportunity and their continued support with Joe’s appeal”.
