In a Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter, Fargo and Mad Men star Jon Hamm proclaimed himself a “comic book nerd” and mentioned he is still in talks with both heads of Marvel and DC for roles as well as confirmed that he passed on The Green Lantern saying it was one he “definitely didn't want to do.” Hamm even indicated he has a role selected at Marvel, if the studio does the storyline…and they say they will. The second trailer for The Penguin, the Colin Farrell-led spinoff series of Matt Reeves' The Batman, was released. It highlights more characters who will appear and indicates the Falcones, Gotham's first family of crime, will be at the center of the story. The show also features Salvatore Maroni, played by Clancy Brown, and is led by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunner Lauren LeFranc. Pixar's Inside Out 2 has jetted past Dune Part 2 to take the crown for top box office take of the year so far. Arthouse film The Bikeriders was highly marketed, but opened at third place with $10 million, and Russell Crowe's horror flick The Exorcism didn't even scrape the bottom of the barrel at a $2.43 million opening. At this point Blade isn't in purgatory…it is officially in development hell. Between the writer's and actor's strikes, actors, writers, and directors being let go and leaving the project, it seems almost impossible that Mahershala Ali's Blade will ever see the light of day. But Hollywood Reporter claims both Ali and Marvel boss Kevin Feige seem like they don't want to drive a stake through the movie, regardless of the lengthy development timeline, obvious loss of money, revolving door of talent, complete changes to the story, and more. M3GAN, the hit horror movie from James Wan's Atomic Monster and Jason Blum's Blumhouse, is getting a spinoff titled SOULM8TE, a thriller that expands the M3GAN universe and is set for release on January 2, 2026. Donald Sutherland, the beloved actor who starred in scores of films such as The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, Animal House, Ordinary People, Pride & Prejudice, and The Hunger Games franchise and won an Emmy for Citizen X, died last Thursday in Miami after a long illness. He was 88. HBO has officially greenlit the first show under DC Studios titled Lanterns. The series has been given an eight episode straight-to-series order by HBO with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan Majors is set to star in the revenge thriller Merciless, which is based on an original screenplay by Frank Hannah. Martin Villeneuve, the younger brother of filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, will direct. The film will mark Majors' first role since his third degree assault and harassment conviction earlier this year. Paramount has released the first trailer for Smile 2, the follow up to Parker Finn's 2022 horror hit. The film debuts in theaters on October 18. DC Comics pulled all unpublished cover artwork by artist Francesco Mattina after Adi Granov and Scott Williams accused him of using AI in recently released cover artwork. Williams is the inking partner of publisher and CCO, Jim Lee at DC. A Spaceballs sequel is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Josh Gad is set to star, and will produce alongside Mel Brooks. Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast of Dexter: Original Sin as a series regular. He is set to portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Christian Slater's Harry Morgan. Sources tell Deadline that Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan are in negotiations to star in Season 2 of the Netflix and A24 anthology series Beef. The roles Isaac and Mulligan would be playing were rumored to be for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, but that ultimately did not come to fruition. Apple Films has acquired the rights to The Wives, an original film produced by A24 and starring Jennifer Lawrence. The Wives is described as a murder mystery inspired by The Real Housewives franchise.
John Wardle and Jasmin Williamson are partners of Wardle, a highly recognised Gold-medal winning practice known for creating extraordinary buildings and places that matter. In this episode, John, Jasmin and Dave discussed:The practice's evolution from the early days of small, but highly considered residential projects, to the broad range of sectors and scales they work in today.Their process in pitching for work when entering into new sectors, and how they identify the right ideas and details from other projects to draw upon to inspire potential clients. Why John believes that not having previous built experience on a project typology can be advantageous for the client, but can also come with challenges when competing against efficient specialist practices. The thinking behind the rebranding of the studio and the decision to shift the focus from John to the other partners, who each bring a different voice to the practice.Their recent expansion into the Sydney market, and how a practice like Wardle goes about building relationships and brand awareness in a short space of time.If you'd like to learn more about the studio, you can visit wardle.studio or follow the studio on Instagram at @wardle.studio.Office Talk is hosted by Dave Sharp of Office D.SHARP, a strategic marketing and brand definition practice for architecture. Aidan Anderson is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Local Project, an architecture publication known for celebrating extraordinary design to an inspired community. In this episode, Aidan and Dave discussed:How The Local Project has evolved from an Instagram page Aidan used to share his favourite architecture and interiors while working as a furniture maker, to a 46-person media company with a category-leading YouTube channel, website, magazine and book. The importance of highlighting the humans behind architecture, ensuring the architect or homeowner is front-and-centre, and how this narrative-driven approach has been key to the success of their well-known project films. Why Aidan believes architectural print is far from dead, and the thinking behind the launch of a magazine that has the qualities of a book, designed to be kept and displayed. What's next for The Local Project, and why Aidan is excited about the potential for new forms of educational content that teaches the public about the thinking behind great architecture. If you'd like to learn more about the publication, you can visit thelocalproject.com.au or follow them on Instagram at @thelocalproject.Office Talk is hosted by Dave Sharp of Office D.SHARP, a strategic marketing and brand definition practice for architecture. Patrick Kennedy and Rachel Nolan are the directors of Kennedy Nolan, a Melbourne-based practice known for their approach to built form, contextual response and a close relationship with landscape. In this episode, Patrick, Rachel and Dave discussed:How they reject the negative associations around following design trends, and instead embrace the idea that their projects are reflective of their time and place, and will eventually date as tastes change. How having a strong workplace culture that encourages having a life outside of architecture gives them the energy and inspiration to come up with new ideas. The important considerations they make about the best way to photograph a project to enter into awards and media, and how to create images that will better communicate ideas to clients. How the strength of their brand has helped them move into larger scale projects such as Nightingale Leftfield and a 16-storey hotel building currently under construction. Why blurring the lines between architecture and interior design has helped their projects to feel more emotionally engaging, both in person and in images. The value of being an active participant in award programs from the very start, and the positive impact winning an award for their first project had on their practice. If you'd like to learn more about their studio, you can visit kennedynolan.com.au or follow them on Instagram at @kennedy_nolan.Office Talk is hosted by Dave Sharp of Office D.SHARP, a strategic marketing and brand definition practice for architecture. In this situation we had a team member who was a great producer but wasn't meshing with the rest of the team. Because of this we were constantly trying to find ways to improve culture and get her connected. It came to the point where it was no longer working and we parted ways. The changes that have come about since then have been amazing! Karen Alcock and Rachael McNally are from MA+Co, a 12-person Melbourne-based practice working on a mix of residential, multi-res and commercial projects. In this episode, Karen, Rachael and I discussed:How the studio has fostered strong long-term relationships with developers, and their insights on ways architects can play a bigger and more impactful role in the development team.Their approach to finding the balance between development budgets and the enjoyment of future occupants by concentrating on designing low-cost moments of joy into every space. They reflect on their recent rebrand, and discuss the benefits of a website that is highly curated, both in terms of the number of projects presented, and the short memorable messages shown to visitors. How the brand refresh allowed them to look inward, communicate what is important to them as a practice, and gain a professional external perspective on their values and strengths.A close look at their recent Mori House, focusing on how commissioning two photography sessions of the one project allowed them to capture the house in both a raw form, and then as a lived-in home.If you'd like to learn more about their studio, you can visit ma-co.au or follow them on Instagram at @ma_co.au.This episode of Office Talk is sponsored by Office D.SHARP, Welcome to Office D.SHARP, a strategic marketing and brand definition practice for architecture. Office Talk: My Honest Thoughts as I Navigate Growth - E186 Highlights from this episode: Office Talk: My honest thoughts as I navigate growth (00:59) Closing Thought: Chasing pleasure vs. having a Purpose (13:15) In this week's office talk we are getting raw and unfiltered with my thoughts on the practice expansion. It's not always sunshine and rainbows. Visualizing the practice I want is awesome but when the bills start arriving, things get a lot more real and a different kind of pressure is applied. This nervous excitement is completely normal and in the next 5 years if I find myself doing this again with another office, I expect to feel the same. Growth is messy but, trust me, it's worth it! (12:48) In this week's episode we are moving ahead on preparing for the new office with a trip to Eye Designs in Pennsylvania! It's incredible to see how the new optical and exam rooms are going to look in greater and greater detail. Office Talk: Lessons Learned in Practice Expansion E183 Highlights from this episode: Office Talk: Lessons Learned in Practice Expansion (00:32) Closing Thought: Perspective on Your Problems (13:10) In this week's office talk, we are recapping the past few weeks in our practice and a realization I've recently come to. As we prepare to move to a much bigger location and add another doctor, there are many changes taking place already in preparation. Something I have realized as I started making these changes, is that I probably did not have to wait until I was moving to a bigger building to set things up the way I wanted! Office Talk: How I Am Growing My Ocular Surface Disease Clinic - E180 Highlights from this episode: Office Talk: How I Am Growing My Ocular Surface Disease Clinic (00:28) Closing Thought: Our ducks are not all in a row (09:46) In this week's office talk we are talking about growing the ocular surface disease part of the practice. Scott Eldridge and Jeremy Anderson are the directors of of Eldridge Anderson Architects, a 4-person residential practice based on Victoria's Surf Coast. In this episode, Scott, Jeremy and Dave discussed: Why they front-load so much effort into the sketch design stage of the design process, resolving much of the project details at this early stage and presenting a single, fully fleshed-out design idea to their clients. The benefits of slower, more mindful ways of practice like hand-drawing and physical modelmaking for refining clear design ideas, nurturing interest in and passion for practice, and injecting energy and momentum into the architect-client relationship. The ongoing debate over whether architects should put their personalities and design process out there for the world to see, or take a big step back and let the work speak for itself and allow the public to interpret the work in their own way. The idea of a less-but-better approach to marketing and communications, and why subtracting unnecessary elements and carefully considering what gets put out can give a practice a clearer and more potent brand identity. If you'd like to learn more about their studio, you can visit eldridgeanderson.com.au or follow them on Instagram at @eldridge_anderson.This episode of Office Talk is sponsored by Office D.SHARP, a practice providing specialised marketing consultancy and strategy tailored to meet the particular needs of architects. Jemima Retallack and Mitchell Thompson are the directors of Retallack Thompson, a Sydney-based architecture practice seeking to create timeless and enduring architecture, interior and landscape design. In this episode, Jemima, Mitchell and Dave discussed: How to make the most of every project opportunity in the early years of practice, from realising that briefs and budgets will often expand and change from what clients present during the first meeting, to taking on smaller projects as a way to explore ideas, develop relationships or refine internal processes. Why Jemima and Mitchell believe that percentage-based fees can create an appearance of conflict of interest that can harm the architect-client relationship, impact the client experience and reduce potential referrals. The unexpected benefits of marketing to other architects; from valuable overflow referrals to collaborations with larger practices on public projects. What Jemima and Mitchell learned about achieving work-life balance from their experiences working in leading practices earlier in their careers, and how they have structured their practice to maximise both the quality of their work and the time they can spend with their kids. The negative influence Australia's real estate industry, with its emphasis on resale value, has had on the creative ambitions of residential clients. Jemima and Mitchell share how they encourage their clients to be brave with their homes, and worry less about future owners and more about their own enjoyment. Katelin Butler is the Editorial Director of Architecture Media, Australia's leading publisher for the built environment and the home of well-known titles such as Architecture Australia, Houses Magazine, Artichoke and architectureau.com. Before taking on the role of Editorial Director, Katelin was the Editor of Houses Magazine from 2011 to 2019, and established the highly successful Houses Awards program. In this episode, Katelin and I discussed: How the Architecture Media editors decide which projects belong in their magazines, and how they look beyond imagery and aesthetics to highlight projects that have educational value for the industry. The role each magazine plays in the Architecture Media portfolio, and the quality-focused approach Katelin and her team take to ensure their titles are the most trusted sources of information in the industry. The different approaches architects can take to engage with the media, looking at targeted vs broad outreach, avoiding busy times of the year, and the value of having patience and holding onto projects for thorough coverage and maximum impact, rather than rushing them out the door in a superficial way. The importance of continuous engagement with editors earlier on in the project timeline, rather than the traditional model of shooting a finished project and submitting it to publications. How to Increase Sales Without Selling - E164 Highlights from this episode: Run Down: How to Increase Sales Without Selling (00:37) Office Talk: Personal experience with new PCP (16:26) Closing Thought: It's going to be okay (22:31) In this week's episode we are talking about laying the foundation for a staff that sells like crazy without even trying. It all starts with your "why" (try to limit it to 5 words or less), your pillars, and then your niche. Set the foundation, engrain it in your staff, and the next step we discuss in Episode 165 will be the cherry on top of a truly convicted and committed sales staff. (00:37) In this week's Office Talk, I share about a recent doctors visit I had. The experience was an interesting one in the sense that part of it couldn't have gotten much worse, but another part was so insanely redemptive that it blew my socks off and they now have a patient for life! Are You Creating the Ultimate Experience for Your Patients? - E163 Highlights from this episode: Run Down: Are you creating the ultimate experience for your patients? (00:49) Office Talk: Optical and Staff Slip-up (18:28) Closing Thought: Staffing - A vs. B vs. C Players (26:17) In this week's episode we are talking about giving your patients the ultimate experience in your practice. Are you treating each patient like they are your only chance to get the word out about you? Why not? It makes complete sense when you think about it. There's really no great reason to not be giving each patient that sits in our chair the ultimate experience and turn them into a devoted fanatic of you and your practice. (00:49) In this week's Office Talk, we had a slip up in optical that has just had me fuming. To put it simply, it was the antithesis of how we train our staff to present and take care of our patients. Let me know how you would have handled it.
