Our conversation for the Valley Business Today featured Shayla Rickard, Business Retention Manager for Frederick County Economic Development Authority, and Carolyn Perry, Human Resources Manager for ZM Sheet Metal. Shayla gave details for the upcoming Widget Cup and talked about why partnerships with businesses such as ZM Sheet Metal are an important part of growing the workforce in Frederick County. Carolyn told us a bit about ZM Sheet Metal and why participating in this event is a key part of their community involvement. Learn more about ZM Sheet Metal here: https://www.zmsheetmetal.com/ The 2023 Widget Cup® Competition will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Millbrook High School. Participating students solve a real-life business problem for a local employer by using skills acquired through Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) courses. Established in 2015, the Frederick County EDA's regional Widget Cup® event is an annual competition for high school teams drawn from students attending public schools in Frederick County, Clarke County, and Winchester, Virginia. Each year, the EDA collaborates with teachers at the area's five high schools to field a competitive team. Teams are comprised of eight students who have demonstrated competencies in engineering, construction, welding, electricity, audio/visual equipment, and oral presentation. Over the course of a full day of competition, the Widget Cup teams will design and build a product for a local business client who has expressed a real need for an object, tool, or structure. The project is not announced until the day of the event. Each team is provided the same starting materials. The students work together to problem-solve, design, and build a functioning device that the business client will use in their day-to-day operations. Using science, math, technology, and career trades skills, the student teams have one hour to create the design of their custom “widget.” Then the team must build a fully functioning prototype. Projects for client participants in past years have included storage systems, workbenches, and gates for the Glen Burnie Gardens at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Throughout the day, the teams are judged by industry professionals using an extensive rubric. The students should be prepared to exemplify teamwork, leadership, and technical skill, among other qualities employers are seeking. At the conclusion of the day's event, the Widget Cup trophy, designed and manufactured by local metal fabricator Fabritek/Winchester Tool, is presented to the winning team. The trophy will remain on display at the winner's school until the next year's event. Last year (2022) the winner was Clarke County High School. Meet the wonderful Esra from Dubai (originally from Turkey) who shares her EndoBoss® Inspiring Story. Esra was a Human Resources Manager prior to the Covid epidemic that affected everyone worldwide. When Esra first reached out to us she was in a lot of pain at ovulation and high levels of pain at menstruation. She also had ovarian cysts, chronic fatigue, poor sleep, bloating, bladder sensitivity, lower back pain, burning sensation in her abdomen and chest, along with an unrelenting pressure sensation in her throat. Fortunately for Esra, her instincts directed her online to seek out another way, (other than surgery or drugs to try to manage her newly diagnosed endometriosis), so she luckily avoided any invasive surgical procedures being promoted by her gynaecologist. Esra purchased my paperback book How I Ended My Endometriosis Naturally, read it within a few days, then reached out to apply to join the life changing EndoBoss® Academy. Within six months of starting the EndoBoss® Journey, Esra's pain scores and symptoms had significantly reduced (or disappeared, much like her autoimmune disease called Sjogren syndrome), and she now has a new and compassionate relationship with her body. As you know, from previous EndoBoss® success stories, the real healing is about the emotional journey. By addressing what is going in, on and around the body, and the brain, (the brain/body connection) we systematically help our EndoBosses process, gently, any upsetting events from the past and/or any toxic people in their lives, as these elements may operate on a deep, subconscious level affecting one's health. The real secret to whole body and emotions healing, is using the Laidlaw Protocols to support the challenging job of healing parts of the subconscious which may hold hurts and harms from the past, whilst also learning to embrace the emotions. Esra has experienced such gigantic shifts in her confidence and her ability to listen to her inner voice and instincts now, as well as recognising her full self-worth and strength. Even though Esra has a little way to go to achieve her ultimate goal of full remission of her cysts (they take some time and require deeper emotional support), what I can share with you is that she absolutely knows that she is a BOSS over her endometriosis now; an EndoBoss® and an emotional master. So I really hope that you enjoy listening to lovely Esra as she generously shares her EndoBoss® journey so far, as she is such a beautiful soul, much like all of our courageous EndoBosses! Barrett Eller has a long history in the industry and community of the swine industry. His experience started with New Fashion as a Safety Manager, then stepped away for a few years in which he worked for a mining company, and then came back to New Fashion Pork as more of a Human Resources Manager and Operation Improvement Role. Now Barrett is now the Director of Sales for Swine Technologies. Our host, Dr. Casey Bradley, and Barrett connect over their history at New Fashion Pork, even though it was at different times. The discussion includes components of worker safety, continuous improvement, and employee culture. All producers can relate to the banter about wearing rubber boots for 8+ hours on concrete floors. Barrett suggests that producers get caught up in the risk-reward equation before making changes that could lead to improvement. Also, many producers need to dial into their metrics and what are the highest priorities to truly drive continuous improvement and the culture on the farm. The conversation further dives into the comfort levels of technology and how to change your culture to adapt technology to drive efficiencies. Barrett mentions that is critical to provide continuous value to your team on the inside versus always looking outside of your organization for the next hire to breed the culture and pride that will ultimately seep out into the community. He also touches on the fact that the TN60 program is not always the long-term solution for labor but needs to develop the pool within our communities. On this episode of Second Act Actors, I interview Laurel, who was drawn to acting through her love of community theatre. She and I met as actors in a local play that was rehearsed and brought to stage during lockdown, which was a very intense process! Laurel's first act was as a wife and a mother, and she also had a career in HR. She can often be found acting on stage in local shows and is a member of the local theatre committee. Laurel and I discuss the magic of community theatre and the change it can bring about in your life, from broadening your horizons to gaining confidence in yourself. As we note, acting on stage is a completely different experience to acting on screen, because if something goes wrong in a play, you don't get to yell “Cut!” and take a second go at it. Laurel shares some stories from her community theatre experience, in amongst words of wisdom for aspiring actors and the advice she gives to her own children about embracing life and not letting the dark times get you down. If you enjoyed this episode and want to hear more inspiration and insights from other second act actors, please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review of the show on whichever podcast platform you use.
