As a 21-year-old in his debut season, Kit Symons was four minutes away from reaching the 1992 FA Cup final with Portsmouth. And then Ronnie Whelan equalised for Liverpool. Further heartache followed as Pompey lost the replay 3-1 on penalties, with Symons (as surprised as anyone when selected) the only one to score.A trip to Wembley evaded Symons for the rest of his career, but he did win two league titles with Fulham and promotion with Crystal Palace. The centre back also won 36 caps for Wales - coming agonisingly close to qualifying for the 1994 World Cup.He then managed Fulham, while also helping to end Wales' 58-year wait to qualify for a major tournament as assistant manager to Chris Coleman in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. He was then by Rob Page's side as Wales reached Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Oh, and he also had a chat with Michael Jackson and Noel Gallagher (not at the same time). Quite the career.Carl Roberts sits in for Elis James.

Here's another chance to hear my Big Interview with Don Hutchison from season four. You'll hear about Don's meteoric rise from boys' club to Hartlepool to Liverpool – where he formed a midfield three with the magnificent Jan Molby and Ronnie Whelan under manager Graeme Souness. Don speaks about the vision, courage and split-second decision making required to be a midfield fulcrum. There's moving stuff, too: how Don's winner for Scotland against England brought his tough miner father to tears. And how Don found Howard Kendall weeping after leading his beloved Everton to top division survival. There's also a tale about another late, great manager – Walter Smith, who sprung the best bit of man-management ever on Don at Goodison Park. In the concluding part of this double episode of The Interview, Trev Downey talks to Ronnie Whelan about the rebuilding of Liverpool in the late 80s under Kenny Dalglish. Ronnie talks about the great side of that era, the similarities between them and the current Liverpool set-up under Jürgen Klopp and has some fantastic stories about the trophies won, and lost, in that era, culminating in the last league title to come to Anfield, in 1990. The conversation continues with a look at how injury impaired his remaining years at the club and the painful and somewhat shabby way in which his days at LFC ended. There's also a very entertaining discussion about Ronnie's time in the most successful Ireland sides in history. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the first part of this double-episode of The Interview, Trev Downey speaks to Ronnie Whelan about his early days as a serial triallist, the influence of his father, the move to Bob Paisley's Liverpool and those initial Merseyside days of digs and loneliness. Ronnie talks about his very sudden and permanent move into the first team alongside the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, winning the league at his first attempt and scoring TWICE in the League Cup final victory of that campaign. The chat continues as Trev asks Ronnie to document those remarkably successful early seasons up to The Double-winning campaign of '85/'86 and including a remarkable European Cup win in Rome in 1984. SIGNING FOR Real Madrid would change everything for Steve McManaman. The move turned him into a league champion and Champions League winner, but it also transformed the way he played the game. In part two, McManaman talks about reinventing himself as a holding midfielder to better serve a team which included the likes of Luis Figo and Fernando Redondo - a player McManaman still considers a great, even though injury crippled the Argentine's career. There is also an appreciation of the roles performed by Ronnie Whelan at Liverpool during the 80s, and Sergio Busquets in the current Barcelona side; fine support acts to some of the biggest stars in the game. Zinedine Zidane gets a mention, too, although not as you might expect. Listen to how this World Cup winner often looked lost during the early days of his Madrid career - before finding himself emphatically with a certain goal at Hampden - and why Claude Makelele was regarded as the most important player at the Bernabeu.
