From the publisher: Christmas is not just a day or a frame of mind as Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) imparts in Miracle on 34th Street (1947); Christmas is also a vehicle for national mythmaking as an idealising mirror for American cultural and political attitudes of a given moment. Via a case study on Hollywood Christmas films released between 1946 and 1961, Selling Out Santa offers an examination of political pressures on Hollywood in the post-war period and the cultural ramifications of federal involvement in the motion picture industry. As the House Committee on Un-American Activities opened hearings in 1947 and the FBI gathered reports on potential communist subversion in Frank Capra's Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life (1946), Hollywood executives began to bend to the socially conservative pressures of this post-war moment. Using Christmas films as the core of this investigation to identify and analyse changes within the genre as they relate to and reflect changes in the wider cultural and political moment exposes for film scholars, students, and non-specialists how these federal and external pressures on Hollywood moulded these holiday favourites throughout the 1950s and set the social standard for decades of Christmas releases.Vaughn Joy is on social media at https://bsky.app/profile/gvaughnjoy.bsky.socialInformation on her book can be found at https://indiepubs.com/products/selling-out-santa?srsltid=AfmBOopjXbRVgGjiwj4_WnZgoxzgP_DnDpf-4pdhv3STCYk0t-pSrcZqShe is on Substack at https://substack.com/@gvaughnjoyAxelbankHistory.com is designed by https://www.ellieclairedesigns.com/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory

Tired of searching for family-friendly Christmas movies, only to find options that clash with your values? Not sure which holiday films are actually worth gathering everyone around the TV for? Catherine shines a light on the dilemma facing so many Christian parents today: how can we find Christmas movies that are both wholesome and engaging—not just repeats of worn-out classics, but films that affirm faith, family, and the real reason for the season? In this special “best of” holiday edition of Christian Parent/Crazy World, Catherine steps into the critic’s seat to deliver her curated list of 5 Family-Centered Films for Christmas. After being shocked by the inclusion of edgy, agenda-driven titles in mainstream “best Christmas movie” lists, Catherine was inspired to seek out fresh, faith-forward options that won’t leave you cringing or hitting “stop.” Here’s her handpicked lineup, designed to offer fresh options you likely haven’t already worn out—and to fill your home with joy and true Christmas meaning: Kids’ Pick: Journey to the Christmas Star – A Norwegian fairy tale adventure with wholesome themes and just a hint of magic, perfect for little ones. Guys’ Pick: Joyeux Noël – A moving, true WWI story about the Christmas Eve ceasefire, exploring big questions of faith, war, and reconciliation (best for teens and up due to mature content). Girls’ Pick: The Christmas Candle – A charming British period piece set in a candle-lit village, based on Max Lucado's novel, brimming with questions about miracles and faith. Date Night Pick: The Family Man – A romantic, funny exploration of priorities and purpose, reminding parents (and couples) of the value of family over fleeting worldly success. Family Pick: The Nativity Story –Catherine’s top recommendation, this beautifully faithful retelling of Mary and Joseph’s journey brings the original Christmas story to life—and into your living room. For each film, Catherine shares why it matters, where you can watch it, and what to be aware of for younger viewers. She encourages listeners to use these films as a springboard for meaningful family conversations about faith, sacrifice, the supernatural, and what Christmas is truly about. She also invites families to discuss where these movies align—or deviate—from biblical truth, fostering discernment and depth. Finish your holiday season feeling equipped, inspired, and ready to lead your family in a Christ-centered celebration. Reflect and Respond:Which Christmas film has sparked a meaningful conversation in your family about faith or values? After tuning in, share your own recommendations or thoughts with Catherine and the CPCW listeners—and make sure to check out her complete list with streaming links at www.catherineseagers.com. Don’t miss out on the resources, encouragement, and conversations that set your family apart in a culture that often forgets Christ at Christmas. Tune in, and let’s put faith back at the heart of the holiday! Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

In this episode of the Italian American Podcast, Pat and co-host Mariana Gatto share a lighthearted and engaging conversation with actor and producer Antonio Cupo. A Canadian who spent ten years working in Rome, Cupo is best known for his roles in Hallmark Christmas films and is in the New York area for Christmas Con in New Jersey, where he is connecting with fans and celebrating the holiday film season. Cupo explains that while he began his career primarily as an actor, his work has increasingly shifted toward producing over the past decade. He attributes this change to Hallmark's high volume of productions, which naturally creates ongoing opportunities to develop and produce Christmas-themed romantic comedies. He describes Hallmark movies as intentionally simple, uplifting, and designed to provide comfort and escapism without heavy themes. The discussion expands to the broader appeal of predictable, feel-good entertainment, contrasting it with the frustrations of modern streaming platforms and expressing nostalgia for a simpler television era. The segment concludes with Cupo noting that acting was not his original goal and that he entered the industry gradually through classes and small early roles.    HIS SOCIALS: Instagram: @antoniocupo X: antoniocupo   HOSTS: Patrick O'Boyle Marianna Gatto   SPECIAL GUEST: Antonio Cupo   PRODUCED BY: Nicholas Calvello-Macchia

If you were to turn on your TV right now, or open up Netflix, the chances of you stumbling upon a cheesy Christmas movie would be pretty high. They tend to be full of clichés, cringeworthy one-liners and predictable plots, but still we just can't seem to get enough.  Let's take a moment to delve into the psychology behind Christmas movies, and how they got to be so successful. Mormon director George Albert Smith released the first Christmas film : a short silent drama called Santa Claus, in 1898, which showed Santa visiting a house on Christmas eve. Moving into the 20th century, the history of Christmas movies reflects the story of Hollywood itself. In the US, they really became a genre, or even tradition, in their own right. The first wave came in the 1990s. Who made the first Christmas film? If they're repetitive and predictable, how come we keep coming back for more? What are the key ingredients for a good Christmas film then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! Welcome to News You Need to Know with Shawn Bolz! Merry Christmas! Today, we dive into some shocking releases this holiday season, including two highly controversial films—one starring Jack Black as a boy's new best friend (Satan) and an animated Netflix Christmas movie for kids that mocks the nativity and even jokes about aborting baby Jesus. Amid the noise, there are incredible redemptive themes and moments in entertainment this season—some directly pointing to Jesus, others indirectly carrying hope, faith, and love.   We'll explore how to navigate the good and the bad in entertainment without losing the true spirit of Christmas. Plus, we'll highlight where Jesus is showing up in unexpected places this holiday season.   Tune in for an eye-opening discussion that will help you engage culture with faith and hope this Christmas! Red One is a big budget Christmas action film with an array of stars to make it shine; it is also a mindless hunk of studio schlock. In it, Santa Claus has been kidnapped by a malevolent holiday witch. It is up to the Rock's Callum Drift (yes, that is his name) to get him back in time for the big day. What follows is a paint-by-numbers blockbuster that is crammed with enough CGI and bad one-liners to rip the seams of even the largest stocking. This thing is a jingle bell mess from start to finish. Hence why it sits at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and was given a lump of coal at the box office. Red One couldn't even muster enough holiday cheer to break even with its asinine $250 million budget. Now, sit back, get into the spirit with a glass of Evan Williams' Bourbon-infused Eggnog, and rip off some snowmen noses!
