What does one of Europe's most historic development clubs actually believe about player development in 2026? In this episode of the Modern Soccer Coach Podcast, Gary Curneen travels to the Netherlands to sit down with PSV Academy Director Aloys Wijnker for an in-depth conversation on the philosophy, methodology, and environment behind one of football's great talent factories. From Ronaldo Nazário and Romário to Arjen Robben and Cody Gakpo, PSV has produced and developed generations of elite players. But this conversation goes far beyond history. Aloys breaks down: Why PSV prioritizes autonomy and decision-making The danger of over-coaching young players Why youth development is not about winning games How coaches can create ownership and responsibility The balance between tactics, creativity, and technique Why isolated technical training misses the point The role of psychology, video, and data in modern academies What he learned from coaching in the United States How PSV structures development from U10 to the first team Why great academies start with a clear football identity This is one of the deepest conversations we've had on modern player development and coach education. If you're a youth coach, academy director, technical leader, or simply passionate about football development, this episode is packed with ideas that will challenge the way you think about coaching. Welcome to the latest episode, after a quieter week. Into the one game a week pattern now. Nice (comfortable?) win over Palace in the Anfield sunshine. I'm Paul, joined by Daz and Sean.Part One: Liverpool 3, Crystal Palace 1Palace continue to be a difficult team to play against - and they were at full strength.Although our record against them since 2017-18 is 13W, 3D and 2 losses in the league.Midfield - Allowed Adam Wharton too much space in segments of this game. Still leaving a lot of space in the middle of the field. But we did have an outball plan with the long ball to Cody Gakpo's head. The Curtis experiment continues to yield resultsBright spots from Wirtz and Isak?Freddie Woodman and Andy Robertson - good vibes. The coverage of this game infuriated one of us. I am personally irritated by Glasner.Either Palace caused us immense problems - look at the xG! 1.14 to 2.26.Palace aren't that bothered by the league game which is why this poor Liverpool team won this one.The response to the Palace goal… Virg and Ibou should have done more! Not one acknowledgement of us being one goal away from going 3rd (including Fulham - Villa where Martin Tyler was trying to magic up an equalizer for Villa).Part Two - Everything else:Us for Champions League - 5 points from 4 games will do it.No Salah. Need Gomez to push Curtis and Dom into midfield?United, Chelsea, Villa and Brentford to goUnited 2 points from clinching UCL. Looked really convincing against Brentford for about 10 minutes. ‘Scouse buster' read one of their new flags.Arsenal and Spurs - they both play quite shit football don't they?Reporting on referee watch - no one seems to have called out the selectivity and bias..Arteta gets to complain about 2 red cards in a week and funnily doesn't mention the Gabriel headbuttMoyes goes on about 2 penalties in a week (including the Garner crumple in the Derby) and somehow misses another Pickford assault on an opposition playerWe will be back before the United game, yes later this week - with a preview of that one. HalliHallo!

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his team are not the only side struggling to create chances from open play this season, insisting many clubs are facing similar challenges despite criticism of Liverpool's recent attacking output. TIMESTAMPS00:00 INTRO 00:30 defeat v Wolves: Not the first time this season it has happened. Enough chances to win the game. We didn't convert into goals. And not for first time this season their first shot on target led to a goal. 2:00 A rep concern if we lose in the same manner but the way we concede goals in last minute aren't the same they aren't big chances they've been shots outside the box. 3:04 On conceding goals: Is it our approach? Not too sure about that as we want to win that game. We're Liverpool. We want to win every game. It's not like we push Virgil or Ibou forward every time. 3:12 Importance on game tomorrow: we can't win the Premier League or League Cup. Qualification for Champions League is massive as we all know. But that's not on line tomorrow, FA Cup is 4:11: the approach is not different we always press high and try to attack. 6:09 Arne Slot on Cody Gakpo: “attacking isn't just down to Cody and Mo in the same way defending isn't just down to Virgil and Ibou. Let's create even more and the goals will come.” 7:16 Slot on ‘same old story' comments: Not all the games have improved in terms of creating chances. But we're not the only team that finds it hard to create from open play. It's the qualify of the league that makes it more complicated. 9:00 Slot on potential changes: “We have a few but we don't have 11. I always have options to bring in and players can bring in and let them start. 10:04 Slot in decisive part of the game: Every part of it will be decisive. We will try to find answers with the players we have available. 12:20 Team news/ Wirtz He trained half and half with the team yesterday. He made the next step in rehab. Let's see where he is today. He could be aailable for a few minutes tomorrow in the best scenario. Everyone else fine. 15:00 Slot on usa tour and being part of discussions: yes I knew 17:04 Slot On schedule and having different squad: I'm happy with what we did last summer, we signed so many great players but you can't predict so many would be injured. In this episode of Scouser Tommies on Anfield Index, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid reflect on a steadier spell for Liverpool after a poor run of results. A heavy loss to Manchester City was followed by a dogged 1-0 win at Sunderland and a much more fluent 3-0 victory over Brighton in the FA Cup. The upcoming fixtures look winnable, though that expectation carries less weight given how unpredictable the Reds have been this season. Recent performances offer cautious optimism. Jim notes that while Liverpool haven't quite “turned the corner,” they're at least “peeping around” it, which feels like progress for fans weathering a difficult campaign. Jay compares the situation to Takeshi's Castle, where Slot's side keep choosing doors—some leading forward, others into “the drink” or the arms of a waiting “monster.” The pair credit improved tactical balance and key individuals for this small upturn. Shifting Dominik Szoboszlai back into midfield has restored rhythm, making the team more balanced and dangerous. Cody Gakpo also draws praise for his link-up play and unselfishness, particularly in Szoboszlai's goal against Brighton. Yet concerns remain about the manager's decisions, including perceived favouritism and slow substitutions when defending a lead. With results improving, focus turns to the club's wider structure and contract issues. Jim and Jay call for renewed deals for players like Szoboszlai and Ibrahima Konaté, suggesting this would lift supporters far more than another hollow PR exercise after a quiet transfer window. Looking ahead to matches against Nottingham Forest, West Ham, and Wolves, they hope Liverpool can build momentum. The FA Cup, a top-four finish, and a strong Champions League push still feel within reach. As always, there's time to shake heads at the neighbours, and this week concludes with a plea for what the Reds should give up for Lent. Learn more about your ad choices. Arne Slot, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo reflect on Liverpool's 1-0 win at Sunderland after Virgil van Dijk's header cut the gap to fifth-placed Chelsea to two points. In this episode of The Reaction presented by Mark Benstead, we also hear from former Reds Phil Thompson, Jan Molby and Jay Spearing, as well as our fan panel: Abigail Rudkin, Aizaz Sheikh and Joel Richards.
From a morale boosting win to mounting squad anxiety, Liverpool's Sunderland victory came at a cost. Dave Davis and David Lynch assess the growing injury and selection concerns shaping Arne Slot's season, starting with Wataru Endo's worrying knock after an impressive emergency right back display. With Trent Alexander Arnold, Jeremie Frimpong, and others already sidelined, the position is becoming a problem zone at a critical stage. Joe Gomez's return offers some relief, but fitness reliability remains a lingering concern. The conversation then shifts to Liverpool's faltering wing threat. Mohamed Salah's assist record continues to climb, yet performances suggest a physical drop off. Cody Gakpo's form slump raises tactical and developmental questions, is it system, confidence, or individual regression? Key talking points include: • Endo injury impact and right back depth • Gomez return and Frimpong timeline • Salah output vs physical decline debate • Gakpo role confusion and form collapse • Why winger recruitment looks inevitable There is also discussion around Curtis Jones, whose reduced minutes and transfer links hint at a potentially emotional summer departure. A squad still competing, but one increasingly showing the strain lines beneath the surface. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Liverpool suffered yet another afternoon of frustration after yet another dramatic finale saw them held to a 2-2 Premier League draw at Fulham on Sunday afternoon. Cody Gakpo thought he had scored an injury-time winner after Florian Wirtz had earlier equalised Harry Wilson's first-half opener only for home substitute Harrison Reed to score a goal-of-the-season contender in the seventh minute of additional time. The result means Arne Slot's side extended their unbeaten run to nine games and remain in fourth place in the hunt for a Champions League qualification berth. Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. The podcast of the Premier League Champions. I'm Paul and today I am joined by Daz and Justin. Podcast has been slow in recording….Part One:‘I was incredibly disheartened last night by the general reaction to the result, and the poor analysis that followed in many quarters; even from some of the more rational analysts. I find the hysteria after defeats far harder to take than actually just losing a game of football, even if that part is painful too.Part Two: Eintracht Frankfurt - WINNING is good.Liverpool suddenly had that second-half performance from 1-3 to 1-5 was their best thirty minutes of the season. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones. The pair were bright as buttons throughout, epitomised by the fourth and fifth goals.. Florian Wirtz was just as bright. His ability to find space is tremendous, touches here and there, clever movement and excellent passing. He found his hips and showed them and as we know, hips don't lie.Ekitike was outstanding again. The oddness of our current reality is that Alexander Isak and Mo Salah are finding it hard. Ekitike isn't. Cody Gakpo is finding bits hard but ends tonight with a goal and an assist. Federico Chiesa wants a fight. Wants to scrap for every yard and in the second-half he is the absolute business. As part of that, attacking some corners with aplomb is no bad thing and both centre-halves do their share - MILAN AWAY LAST YEAR. As part of that, exploiting an opposition weakness is no bad thing. As part of that, picking teams which make it easier for the footballers is no bad thing and has just happened for what feels like the first time in a while.Liverpool aren't a perfect outfit but that doesn't preclude any achievement yet. Tonight they looked like a team and that is a step forward. NOTE the ball in play time and the absence of a prick of a referee….. None of this means anything is permanently fixed, but permanently fixed is a teeny bit overrated. The issue with contemporary football is the speed of change. In the autumn of 2024 Paris St Germain looked like a skewed joke. By March they looked irresistible. Nothing stays precisely in position for any length of time and you are constantly having to work things out.Tonight was like taking off tight shoes. It made the world easier, the Swiss System easier, your brain easier. The brain is the main thing. We should want the pressure; just not yet. Today helps.Part Three - from the United game:Liverpool have now contested a staggering 256 aerial duels in just eight league games; which equals 32 per game. The Man United game involved 34. Last season the average in Liverpool games was just 20.3 per match. The increase per game from last season means a staggering 58% more aerial duels, which is almost another sport. At the current rate, Liverpool will contest 500 extra aerial duels this season than in 2024/25. Liverpool are still top for aerial duels won at – a massive 58.2% – which is elite for a team. The Reds are great in the air, full stop. But the sheer number being slung at the Reds means over 100 of the 256 have been lost; that's why long-ball teams play the numbers game (you can't win them all, but the ones you win can lead to goals in the chaos). FootnoteLiverpool also created as much xG (2.8) in 2023 when Cody Gakpo scored two in a 7-0 win as when the Reds scored just one yesterday, when Gakpo scored, missed a big chance, and hit the post three times (two with superb shots).‘Get Saturday boxed and go from there. I love taking off tight shoes. You always need to be prepared to put them back on because you wear tight shoes because they are the good ones.'If you enjoyed the pod, please share it with a friend. Liverpool ended a run of four successive defeats with an emphatic Champions League win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday evening. Despite falling behind to a Rasmus Kristensen strike, the Reds were well ahead by the interval through goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate before Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai netted in the second half to seal a 5-1 triumph. The result means Arne Slot's side have now taken six points from nine in their first three games in the competition with their biggest win of the season. Liverpool slumped to a fourth successive defeat for the first time in almost 11 years as their miserable run of form continued with a disappointing reverse against Manchester United. Harry Maguire scored the winner late on after Cody Gakpo had deservedly equalised a controversial opener from Bryan Mbeumo in only the second minute. The result means Liverpool have now lost three Premier League games and sit out side the top two for only the second time since Arne Slot was appointed boss at the start of last season. Suj and James review all the action from Gameweek 8 which included some extraodinary individual showings as Erling Haaland recorded another brace, Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a hat-trick but underperforming (!) his xG on the day and Cody Gakpo scored, hit the woodwork three times and missed a sitter. Those Gakpo misses were in a rare Anfield Liverpool defeat that means it's four defeats in a row for The Champions in all competitions. What's going wrong? Manchester United were the victors at Anfield and now may feel they can put a consistent run of results together. Plus, Ange Postecoglu's spell in charge of Nottingham Forest is over, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth was carnage, Tottenham's poor showings finally caught up with them, while Burnley and Sunderland defensive assets rewarded the FPL managers who started them or used them as part of a Bench Boost. While Arsenal and Chelsea assets continue to appeal following away wins and clean sheets recorded with Gabriel and Reece James the biggest returners. Liverpool fell to a fourth successive defeat for the first time in 11 years as Manchester United claimed a late win at Anfield on Sunday. The Reds fell behind in controversial circumstances early on after Bryan Mbeumo scored despite Alexis Mac Allister suffering a head injury in the build-up. Arne Slot's side fought back and saw Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork three times, while they also had a penalty appeal waved away for handball, before the Dutchman equalised late on by converting Federico Chiesa's low cross. But Harry Maguire then headed home Bruno Fernandes' cross to clinch a first win at Anfield since 2016 for United. And with Liverpool falling to a third late defeat in a row in the Premier League, they have now dropped down to fourth in the table. Paul reacts as Liverpool lose a third consecutive game. Cody Gakpo hand equalised in the 2nd half, but the Reds couldn't keep the door shut, and lost in injury time. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Another last gasp winner conceded to round off a miserable seven days in which the Reds have been beaten three times. Cody Gakpo's equaliser looked like it would be the platform for yet another late comeback, but just like last week at Palace it was Arne Slot's men on the receiving end of the late drama. TLW Editor Dave Usher was joined by Ian Brown and Paul Natton shortly after the final whistle to pick through the bones of this one and try to figure out just what the hell is going on with these passive performances and constant swapping and changing of players into unfamiliar positions.
After two miserable losses on the bounce for Liverpool, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid try to keep spirits up on this week's Scouser Tommies. They share their views on where things have gone wrong for the Reds since opening up that five point gap at the top of the Premier League, also remembering they are actually still top of the table! For Jay and Jim it's not so much one major flaw that needs fixing as perhaps a list of smaller problems where tweaks, and maybe some patience, are required. For Jay there's a question mark about whether the sides Slot is putting out have enough leaders, and identifies at least one spot in the side where that might make a difference. Listen in as the duo discuss their thoughts on what's changed between this season and last, the defeats coming after a run of wins that some are describing as lucky. For Jim one major flaw isn't so much about conceding goals, it's more about being unable to create enough quality chances for what is on paper a mouthwatering array of attacking options. Attention turns to the weekend's Chelsea clash, a chance to stop this blip turning into something more before yet another international break. A win would restore so much confidence in the camp, and Jim and Jay both urge a return to basics this weekend before using that international break to dig deep and study the details of Liverpool's recent difficulties. If anyone at the club tunes in they'll hear views on everything from selection dilemmas at right-back to the challenge of getting the best out of Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo, not to mention the new boys. It's a search for answers along with honest reflections on the midfield shuffle and how small tweaks, not wholesale changes, could help Liverpool get back to winning ways. As bad as it might seem right now to be at the top of the Premier League table, and still on course to finish in the all important top 24 of the Champions League mad League phase, as has been pointed out on the show many a time, there's always a way to help cheer up. Because there's always Everton. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Liverpool kicked off their Premier League title defence in dramatic fashion as two late goals earned a 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield. Arne Slot's side looked like they would have to settle for a point after surrendering a two-goal lead earned by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. However, Federico Chiesa's late strike took the roof off Anfield before Mohamed Salah capped things off in injury time. Reds reporter David Lynch was in attendance to see the champions start a new season with a thrilling victory, and believes they deserve praise for battling through. Ekitike and the effective matchwinner Chiesa are singled out for their contributions as a result. However, there were also some concerning signs that had already been witnessed in pre-season and which Slot will need to iron out. A Mohamed Salah goal and two from Cody Gakpo were sufficient after the visitors had twice equalised, first through Oihan Sancet and then an inadvertent own goal from Gakpo. Arne Slot selected a strong starting XI for the second match which included five new signings and perhaps offered hints of how his team could line up for the Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth on Friday week.
