Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday. First-half goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz had the home support in party mode again as they celebrated being Premier League champions against a team who had been their nearest rivals for the crown. However, the Gunners fought back impressively in the second period, while Trent Alexander-Arnold's introduction as a substitute also served to change the mood. Here, Reds reporter David Lynch reflects on the performance, and discusses the Alexander-Arnold controversy that is threatening to sour the run-in. He also heaps praise on Conor Bradley for his performance at right-back and goalscorers Diaz and Gakpo. Check out this review of the game and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comment section. Liverpool moved a step closer to clinching the Premier League title as they claimed a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham at Anfield. Arne Slot's men looked all set for a disappointing point when Luis Diaz's early opener was cancelled out by an Andy Robertson own goal with five minutes remaining. However, Virgil van Dijk stepped up to the plate, heading home in the 89th minute to move his team 13 points clear at the summit. Reds reporter David Lynch was at Anfield to witness a crucial victory for Liverpool in which they weren't at their best. He believes that is partly down to Slot's subs, though there is plenty of praise for the performances of Alisson Becker and Alexis Mac Allister. Sean Rogers talked about the seriousness of the punctured lungDidn't like us deciding the game was done - 1-0 is a tenuous leadMore refereeing shite:Tarkowski and Tierney combine to produce one of the worst decisions you'll see. PGMOL (eye roll)The offside goal (20) - CSI arrives.Barrott blows his whistle for the foul on Szobozlai when the ball is in the air. Maybe he thought the defender had the ball. VAR could still tell on Pickford. At the end, we could have had a breakaway.Sam Barrott - maybe too big a game for him at this point.Overall - some narratives:VVD - they play a certain way and we managed to cope with their tactics said Slot.Slot was passive aggressive about Everton - the rule helps teams with a high press, not that Everton do that…in the Fulham press conference he mentions the low block againPart Two - Fulham away:Team selectionFulham - lost 2 in a row. Soccer Down Here

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 17:19

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. An auditor who worked for Barcelona for four days is the only one who included the €100million sale of VIP seating to Middle Eastern investors and now that has been questioned by La Liga, which could lead to Dani Olmo and Pau Victor's registrations being in question. When you think this story is as ridiculous as it could possibly be, the scriptwriters find something else even more ridiculous to add into the mix. In reports filed from the previous auditor, who worked through sometime on December 31, and the unknown auditor who worked from December 31-January 3, and the next auditor who started on January 3 (we think)... only the unknown auditor had the sale included. That sale allowed Barcelona to have the additional salary cap space per La Liga rules to extend Olmo & Victor's registrations into 2025. But that sale either didn't happen, wasn't properly accounted for, or something else because it didn't show up on a subsequent financial report. Lots for the courts, league, and federation to sort out in Spain. And it affects a potential bid for a quadruple from Barcelona who are leading La Liga, won the SuperCopa, alive in the Champions League, and now into the final of the Copa del Rey where they will face Real Madrid. Announced this morning, the bid led by the US (which might or might not include Mexico as a co-host) was the only one submitted by the deadline to host the 2031 Women's World Cup. Gianni Infantino said at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade that other Concacaf nations could be involved in hosting matches, something that has been reported recently here in the US. The 2035 tournament will be hosted by Great Britain as it was the only to submit a bid in time for that event. LAFC beat Inter Miami last night in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal, the first loss for the Herons in 2025 in all competitions. Nathan Ordaz with the goal in the second half, second leg is in Ft. Lauderdale next week. Chattanooga Red Wolves won the penalty shootout across town at Finley Stadium to knock Chattanooga FC out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in the second round in the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Over 12K were on hand for the game, 4th largest crowd in CFC history and their largest in a long time, 2nd largest in the 2nd round in the history of the USOC. Jose Mourinho did another ridiculous thing, which is becoming commonplace for him at this stage of his career. He grabbed the face of the opposing manager after yesterday's Turkish Cup match between his Fenerbahce & Galatasaray. The ridiculous actions seem to come on a bi-weekly basis for Mourinho at this stage, sad after one of the greatest careers for a manager in history but completely inexcusable to act in this manner. Liverpool defeated Everton yesterday 1-0, Everton should have had a player sent off for a horrendous challenge, but Liverpool's goal was controversial as well. Referees got it right according to how the rule is written, but I'm asking IFAB to consider changing the Laws of the Game to account for situations like this. When a pass is made for a player in an offside position, that should make them active in the play, regardless of whether they move for the ball or not. Defenders have to play the ball in that situation because they don't know if the player is offside from their vantage point. The defender shouldn't be punished for playing that ball by that action allowing the offside player to be now in an onside position. Luis Diaz was onside according to the letter of the LOTG, but not the spirit in my opinion and this should be changed going forward in interpretation.

SCOUSER TOMMIES: WINNING TO BE WINNERS

The Anfield Index Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 42:16

After what felt like the longest international break in football history, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back for another episode of Scouser Tommies, as the Reds get back to winning ways and move another step closer to league title number 20, despite the PGMOL's best efforts. The win came courtesy of Diogo Jota's Merseyside Derby goal, one with a tinge of controversy. Liverpool's 1-0 win extended David Moyes's miserable Anfield record - he's won as many games at Anfield as Everton had shots on target in this match. What's that about proving you don't have to win to win trophies to be a winner? The controversy over Jota's goal was minor, and as Jim and Jay point out, easily explained. According to the laws of the game, Luis Diaz wasn't interfering from an offside position, although miserable Moyesie might need it explaining to him a few more times. Less minor was the controversy over James Tarkowski's tackle on Alexie Mac Allister. When even Duncan Ferguson is calling it a straight red card, there's not much room for manoeuvre. Or at least you'd think so, but many a blue will be defending that for years to come, if asked. Just before they start to rattle on about the ‘offside' goal. Another one for their long list. The PGMOL did point out the following day that Tarkowski's horror show should have been a red, but there was no sign of an explanation as to how Greater Manchester referee Paul Tierney, on VAR duty, failed to spot what everyone else did. Liverpool's next ref is from even closer to the city of Manchester. As discussed in the show, the derby win was much-needed and it really sets the Reds up well, and Jay discusses where Liverpool could be playing if and when they do finish the job. Not that the job is finished yet of course, and as Jim points out, next opponents Fulham aren't always an easy team to beat at their own place. As well as the highs of the derby win there's time to discuss the defeat at Wembley just before this break, and Jim wonders if maybe we are taking these occasions for granted. However, as Jay points out, the disappointment of losing that game will fade into nowhere if the Reds do complete the job in the competition that matters most, one we've not been able to take for granted for many a year. In addition this week, Jay and Jim discuss the Scouser in the team, Curtis Jones, who played at right-back in the derby and was on the receiving end of a lot of praise from his boss. There's also a discussion on the Scouser out injured, Trent Alexander Arnold, whose future was under even more of a spotlight during the international break. Has he already played his last game for his boyhood club? With this show coming so close to a derby, there was always going to be a mention of the neighbours and their comedic acts. Darren England's refereeing return played out in inevitable fashion on Saturday in a tasty tussle between two of the Premier League's form sides. With Bournemouth on a record unbeaten run, Cherries fans were buoyant ahead of Liverpool's arrival - but despite a busy opening for the home side, the tone was set on 28 minutes, when Arne Slot's side were awarded a spot kick after a Cody Gakpo fall. Debates rage on amongst Cherries fans about this and a number of decisions made by the ref throughout the game, who bafflingly kept his job as a Premier League ref last season after a huge VAR error during Tottenham's chaotic clash with Liverpool, when Luis Diaz had a goal incorrectly scrubbed out. Whilst England was keen to get the plaudits from the Merseyside contingent, it was Mo Salah's name that Liverpool fans were singing at full-time, as his sublime strike in the second half sent the visitors home with a 2-0 victory. Now that the dust has settled, were Bournemouth "robbed"? Is VAR accurate? Was the referee THAT bad? Sam and Tom discuss the events at Dean Court...
