111. Hidden Struggles Surrounding Maternal Mental Health With Sasha Nicole In this episode we talk with Sasha Nicole about her mental struggles and the thoughts she was having in the postpartum period, how she overcame those feelings of guilt and shame, and how she now is an advocate for maternal mental health and sharing our stories with others. We specifically go into the judgement circling mental health and the downfall of telling mothers they need to just get through it. We have generations before us and friendships with others who have struggled or are still struggling which leaves no-one around to help lift them up and allow them to feel safe and validated. When we are in the healing process, you don't have to drop that shame and guilt right away or even talk about it. It will come with time and needs to be when you're at a point of reflection with yourself. People like Sasha are here to show that it's possible to push through and be an example of continuing to persevere. Very rarely are we able to share in real time what's truly happening, it's typically after the point of coming out the other side that we are able to look back and acknowledge how far we've come. It is then that we typically see our strength but I encourage you to try and remain present and see your strength in the moment. It can be hard to make sure you are able to prioritize yourself in those early months and is definitely easier said than done when you're still in that state of survival but we can start imagining a time when we care for ourselves fully again and start planning and taking action towards that version of ourselves even if we mental can not get to that point yet. Good things take time, remember you are in a season of rest and true growth. Become more aware of your thoughts, listen to this conversation, and see what comes up for you in this stage of life. Shades of Strong | Shifting the Strong Black Woman Narrative
Mental Health, Resilience, and Postpartum Depression often get a bad rap in the Black female community. Mental health because it's highly stigmatized, resilience because Black women are often celebrated for their bounce back game even when it's to their own detriment, and postpartum depression because depression in and of itself is taboo – add postpartum in front of it and it becomes even more taboo. We're glad "critically acclaimed and born" Sasha Nicole is going against the grain and talking about ALL OF IT no matter how taboo or uncomfortable it may be. She stopped by the virtual studio to chat it up and pour it out about her experience with severe postpartum depression, resilience and how both impacted her mental health. The reality is we may not look like what we've been through, but we've most certainly fought battles and bounced back from circumstances that probably could have and should have taken us out. That's what resilience looks like for most of us, but for Sasha Nicole it also looks like being able to overcome her own self-inflicted obstacles and taking accountability for the choices she's made. There are levels to this sh*t and Sasha Nicole is not afraid to break it all down. From reframing resilience to the disparities in mental health and the lack of knowledge and awareness around postpartum depression, she leaves no stone unturned. Sasha Nicole, the creator of Fearless Nfluence, a curation of digital experiences and content about mental health, motherhood, love, food and more, champions overcoming obstacles by embracing one's truth and identity fearlessly. She joins Chelsea 6:30 minutes in to talk about the heartbreak of invisibility, of being overlooked or made a joke of for being obese, and the power she's walking with as she lets go of who she used to be. She opens up about her weight loss journey, the grief of looking different but still expecting people to look at her the same, the trauma embedded in insults that are meant to isolate you, mental health and the stigma of anti-depressants, the scary and singular journey of postpartum depression, and yet the grace, compassion, and relatability that can become because when you've been exposed to the cruelty of a world that doesn't try to understand you, you have every reason in the world to dare to be different.Sasha Nicole:Website: https://fearlessnfluence.comBlog: https://fearlessnfluence.com/blogeBook: From Detour to Destination: Your Ultimate Guide to Navigating Obstacles and Overcoming FearInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealsashanicoleFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/fearlessnfluence YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/AmerikanTherapyPodcast: Amerikan Therapy Chelsea Leigh Trescott:Website: https://breakupward.comAdvice Column: https://www.huffpost.comWriting: https://thoughtcatalog.com/chelsea-leigh-trescottInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thankyouheartbreakFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/musingsEmail: chelsea@breakupward.com
