Setting goals for the new year? Learning a language? Going for a run? Delivering food? Picking packages off a warehouse shelf for delivery? There's a game for that. Or, at least, a gamified system designed to nudge you in a series of pre-programmed directions in the service of the state, techno-capitalist overlords, or any number … Read More Read More
Sebastian Felzmann, M.A., studied German Literature and Journalism at the KIT and worked as a research assistant and project manager for third-party-funded projects and initiatives at the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe. Together with Adam Rafinski and Jens M. Stober he initiated the HfG GameLab. As a freelancer and consultant, he supported several major clients in the field of game studies (GEELab Europe) and the economic power of games (City of Karlsruhe – Economic Development Department). Sebastian loves retro games and old gaming devices so much, that he had written a book about that subject and several scientific papers and even held various lectures about Media Nostalgia and Gaming History. As a book producer he supported Steffen Walz and Sebastian Deterding in the publication of “The Gameful World”, a 690-pages-thick handbook about Gamification.
Our topic today is: Game Thinking and the MVP of Instructional Design with special guest Zsolt Olah. Zsolt participated in Kevin Werbach's G.A.M.E. (Gameful Approaches of Motivation and Engagement) along with researchers and practitioners of game design and gamification such as Karl Kapp, Amy Jo Kim, and Sebastian Deterding. While researchers and practitioners might have disagreed on many levels about gamification, there was one big take away for L&D we all agreed on. Is Instructional Design Dead? Zsolt believes that Instructional Design can be the MVP of the game, but only if we redefine our job and move our focus from the traditional content-driven design to user-centered action design. And that's where Game Thinking comes in. Zsolt likes to refer to the systematic approach overall as Game Thinking, which may result in gamification, game-based learning, the combination of the two or no training at all. It all depends on the business goals. Our discussion today explores: The meaning of Game Thinking first. A resistance by instructional designers to designing gamified learning experiences The most frequently asked questions by instructional designers about gamification Moving away from the content-driven approach to a user-centered, action-focused approach The best way to learn more about gamification of learning About Zsolt Olah: Zsolt is a Director, Innovation and Learning Solutions at PDG (Performance Development Group), where he's responsible for a team to deliver innovative learning and performance solutions that drive business results. Previously, Zsolt worked as a Sr. Program Manager at Comcast University, where he was the thought leader in the creative learning solutions space, spearheading the research and application strategy of gamification/game-based learning, game-thinking within learning and development. Guest lecture by Sebastian Deterding, assistant professor in the Game Design program in the College of Arts, Media and Design of Northeastern University
This past week at the Alaska Society for Education (ASTE) conference in Anchorage, I met a whole lot of great people with interesting ideas about education. Two of those people were Nicole Fuerst and Matthew Turner, who collaborated on a set of presentations at ASTE exhibiting their experience with and the promise in using badges and gamification for K-12 education. Their practice, as well as their proposals, were grounded in the works of Sebastian Deterding and Richard Bartle, both of whom come up in the podcast.
Getting »Gamification« Right. View more presentations from Sebastian Deterding Außerdem gibt es heute endlich mal wieder eine Weinrezension: ein Geheimwein der Kellerei Kurtatsch (leider reine Flash Webseite) in Süd-Tirol, nur erhältlich bei Remigio Polettos Winebar, und ein bisschen Immanuel Kant.
In 1960, Milton Bradley published "The Game of Life": a capitalist wet dream of a board game, won by the lucky one who retired richest. Today, "gamification" vendors still take Milton Bradley seriously. From losing weight to saving Africa, from watching TV to matching DNA sequences: there’s nothing that couldn’t be made more fun by adding points, badges, and other elements from video games. At least that’s the selling proposition. Yet the debate on gamification is deeply split. On the one hand, marketers dream of customer mind control, on the other game designers warn of digital snake oil sellers and shallow ‘pointsification’. How to design a playful experience that is truly meaningful to users - instead of just creating shallow novelty effects? Which lessons do games really hold for other products and services? What criticism is valid? And how can designers interested in "gameifying" an application steer clear of the worst pitfalls? Sebastian Deterding is a designer and researcher usually flown in for some thorough German grumpiness. He speaks and publishes internationally on gameful design, persuasive technology, and the social contexts of games at venues such as the Gamification Summit, Gamescom, reboot, or Google. His work has been covered by The Guardian, the LA Times, The New Scientist, and EDGE Magazine among others. When not designing, he pursues a PhD on the motivational psychology of ‘gameified’ applications at Hamburg University.
