BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Dr. Mostafa Malki is a professor at UT-Rio Grande Valley and executive director for business development at America's Additive Foundry Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems. He is also the founder of Aaron Economic Consulting.Malki was a panelist for a discussion titled “Additive Manufacturing and Industrial Reshoring in the RGV.” The discussion, held at the eBridge Center for Business & Commercialization, part of RGV StartUp Week.During his remarks, Malki acknowledged he might offend some people when speaking about the importance of manufacturing over retail.  “Science technology, engineering and mathematics are what create wealth. All the others industries, although important, are not self-sustaining without a very strong industrial base,” Malki said.“So I understand, and maybe I'm going to offend some people but I'll go ahead and say it. One of the largest employers or industries in the Valley are the school districts. How we fund schools, education, is through property taxes. So somebody has to pay those taxes to be able to have quality education. That somebody has to be manufacturing.”Malki elaborated on his thought:“It has to be industries, because they are the one generating value. I don't want to give a lecture on economics, but I'll give you a very short explanation. When you manufacture something, most of the stuff that you manufacture is not going to be sold and consumed locally, it will be exported. So you export the value that you have produced and bring back cash that allows activity in that economy. It allows for a thriving entertainment industry, real estate, schools and so on.”Malki then contrasted retail with manufacturing.“I don't want to pick on retail,” he said, explaining that much of the profit created from retail activity leaves the region.“Only manufacturing does that because it brings money in and takes products out. Other areas (such as retail), they take money out, and that's what you're trying to avoid. So you're bleeding the region in that sense.”Malki said, economic development officials “cannot just say no, we're not going to do retail, because we still need retail.” But, he said, “we should not really focus on retail.”Malki continued: “We need to focus on manufacturing and industry, whether it's advanced or traditional manufacturing, because that's what creates wealth in the community. You look at Chicago, you look at L.A., there are very strong manufacturing bases there and that's the reason why they are considered successful, big, thriving communities. It's because there is wealth being generated there.”In other parts of his remarks, Malki spoke about additive manufacturing and how the Valley could learn a lot from studying the success of Sweden. Editor's Note: Here is an audio recording of everything Dr. Malki said on the Additive Manufacturing and Industrial Reshoring in the RGV panel.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

In the aftermath of that win though, a youtube video titled "Mostafa Asal Cheating Analysis" was released highlighting 4 or 5 areas in Asal's game that they allege prove he is cheating. The video could have been an objective piece that identifies and discusses the leg trips, aggressive swings, and taking space issues, but instead the video is injected with troubling hateful language and doesn't raise any questions, only pointing fingers solely at Asal. Mostafa provides his thoughts on the video and how he's handling the upshot of it all. We also discuss the high stakes face-off with Ali Farag at El Ghouna, how he adjusted to life and squash in Pontefract, his relationship with coach James Willstrop, his brother Marwan and much more.

Meet Dr. Mostafa Salari Rad, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at the New School in New York City. Born in Iran in a Shia Muslim practicing family, he always had an interest in philosophy, psychology, social science. He wondered why people behaved the way they did, why countries developed the way they did, and later, as a high school student in Japan, when he was the only person observing Ramadan, he started asking deeper questions about the self control he had to exert to fast, as Ramadan asked of him, from sunrise to sunset. Perhaps the first time, Dr. Rad questioned, why am I doing this? Why isn't anyone else doing this? What does this ritual mean? When Dr. Rad decided to pursue a PhD in psychology, he focused his research on the fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which the vast majority of the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide observe. He wanted to find out more about the psychological, behavioral, and social benefits of fasting, and he especially wanted to better understand the self-control Ramadan requires. Dr. Mostafa Malki is a professor at UT-Rio Grande Valley and executive director for business development at America's Additive Foundry Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems. He is also the founder of Aaron Economic Consulting. Dr. Malki recently gave a presentation about business opportunities tied to additive manufacturing at the eBridge Center for Business & Commercialization in downtown Brownsville. During the presentation he said there is a great opportunity for the Rio Grande Valley to forge partnerships with manufacturing and technology companies from Sweden. The Rio Grande Guardian interviewed Professor Malki at the conclusion of his presentation.  Asked to tell Guardian readers and viewers about Sweden, Malki said: “Where should I begin? There's so much to say about Sweden.” Malki said Sweden is a relatively small country, population wise, but area wise, is very big. It has a population of about ten million. “It has very low population density, but it has also very big presence in terms of industries and innovation and so on. It's one of the top countries in the world in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship and so on,” Malki said. “If we can calculate a ratio of multi-billion-dollar corporations per capita, they are probably the number one country. There are a lot of very big companies that are household names, Volvo, IKEA and Ericsson and so on that are Swedish companies. There are some that are also very big multinational companies, but they're not very well known because they do business to business type of work.” Malki visits Sweden a lot. “It's a very fascinating country, for a very small country to be able to be a major player in manufacturing industry and innovation,” he said.Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service website to read the full story.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Guest: Phil Gurski. President/CEO Borealis Risk Consulting. Former strategic analyist at CSIS specializing in violent Islamist-inspired homegrown terrorism and radicalization.  B.C. Provincial politics and British Columbians voting habits during federal elections are often a bit of a mystery to other Canadians. This week the sudden collapse of the BC United Party with leader Kevin Falcon standing beside BC Conservatives leader John Rustad and announcing BCU was suspending its provincial campaign just two months prior to the vote and throwing his support to the Conservatives in order to not split the right-of-centre vote. Why? Leaves MLA's for the official opposition BCU in limbo. So, what now on Canada's Pacific Coast?  Should we expect a merger of the federal Liberal and New Democrat parties before the upcoming national election? We ask a former B.C. NDP premier who became federal Minister of Health in the Paul Martin Liberal government for his view of British Columbia unexpected development, as well as for his thoughts on an announcement of a federal left-wing party comprised of what are now the LPC and NDP.  Guest: Ujjal Dosanh. Former British Columbia NDP premier and federal Liberal Minister of Health. Are Canada's teachers unions almost invariably opposed to decisions taken by provincial governments on the right side of the political spectrum? Do conservative provincial governments engage in battles with teachers unions in an attempt to satisfy their base?   Today and following a UNESCO advisory to end the use of mobile phones in classrooms worldwide, Ontario is the canary in the classroom for our discussion.   As students return to school in Ontario (and elsewhere in Canada) controversy over the ban/partial ban of classroom mobile phone use continues.  Guest: Karen LIttlewood. President. Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation As the Trudeau government scrambles to right the Temporary Foreign Workers Program chaos, with federal finance minister Chrystia Freeland challenging both post-secondary colleges and universities, as well as employers, Professor Sylvain Charlebois, director of the Dalhousie University AgriFood lab expresses concerns that the TFWP will, or already has reached into the food chain. Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois. Director: Agrifood laboratory, Dalhousie University.  Old enmities between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have been overcome and OASIS, the British Super Band is returning to touring in Ireland, Wales and England, with tours outside Europe being discussed.  Other bands/rock acts to likely follow? And which have successfully already done this, or failed in the attempt? Also, what makes certain rock acts impervious to time? Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Burton Cummings come to mind.
