He came from a high school in Kentucky that produced a number of well-known athletes, like Steve Finley, George Wilson and Kurt Barber. Terry Shumpert thought basketball at Paducah Tilghman High School would take him to the next level, but a knee injury turned his focus to the diamond. Shump could hit, was fast around the bases and had quite the glove on defense. He took his baseball skills to the University of Kentucky where he was a 3-year starter, 2X First Team All-SEC and still ranks near the top of the records books for the Wildcats in stolen bases. He was named an SEC Legend in 2013.Major League Baseball scouts noticed Terry at Kentucky and he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Kansas City Royals in 1987. It took a few years for his MLB debut, but it finally came in 1990 and from there he stayed in the Bigs until retirement in 2004. Five of his 14 seasons were spent the Rockies where he became the ultimate utility player. During his career, Terry played every position except pitcher and catcher. He was Mr. Reliable. After baseball, Terry focused on his five children with his wife DeQuita and has tried to impart the knowledge he has learned throughout his career, while also giving his kids the space to make their own decisions.

Show Notes: Sylvia is very humbled to be recognized as an SEC Legend but it makes her feel old She's the youngest of five and she's always been competitive Volleyball was her first love and was not a natural at basketball when she first started playing in middle school Once she became more confident, she fell in love with basketball and started dunking a tennis ball when she was in the 7th grade Started getting recruited by colleges during her sophomore year in high school and she was also recruited by other local high schools Former LSU Head Coach Sue Gunter told her things that she didn't want to hear which she really appreciated and decided to attend LSU instead of Tennessee or Florida St. Fans in Chicago have still been very supportive of her decision to request a trade to play elsewhere and she would have sat out the entire season if needed Minnesota was the only team she wanted to play for because she felt they had a true chance to win and she already had played with Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Rebekkah Brunson, and Lindsay Whalen Being overseas is extremely tough and her go-to meal, when she returns to the US, is her mom's mac-n-cheese Always enjoyed watching Shaq, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Kevin Garrett play She doesn't want to put any time limits on how much longer she will play Currently studying to be a mortician when she does stop playing and has always been a curious person and wanting to know how things work Words of Wisdom from Sylvia Fowles: "Just be the best that you can be because there's only one you." SEC Legend, NBA veteran and European Champion, Rick Brown. We discuss Rick's early career and his tough, yet rewarding, decision to move to Atlanta and play high-school basketball. His outstanding HS years put Rick on the national radar and he was recruited by numerous colleges, including Michigan and Kentucky. Ultimately, he decided to move back home and played four years with Mississippi State University. Rick was one of the players that the Golden State Warriors drafted, after they traded away Robert Parish and dealt their number three pick to the Celtics, in the 1980 NBA Draft - that selection would be Kevin McHale - effectively forming Boston's Hall of Fame, 'Big Three'. Rick recalls his years with the Warriors, and talks about playing with personalities like World B. Free, Bernard King and Joe Barry Carroll. Golden State traded Rick to Atlanta, mid-way through the 1983 season - this was Dominique Wilkins' rookie year. We talk about his time with the Hawks and also his role in Larry Bird's incredible 60-point game, in 1985. After finishing his NBA career, Rick moved overseas and achieved high levels of success, becoming a European Champion in the process. He played ten years in Europe, with very-recognizable names, including Mike D'Antoni, Bob McAdoo and Arvydas Sabonis. One of Rick's greatest moments, happened in 1992, when he won his team (Real Madrid) the European Cup Final. Last year (2014), Rick was inducted into Mississippi State University's Sports Hall of Fame. He talks about that honor and the importance of leaving a legacy to his family. We also briefly chat about his sons who are looking to make a name for themselves in the future. After our conversation, I briefly invite my good friend, Cobi Sobrino - who was in attendance at the 1992 European Cup Final - onto the show. He recalls the game and Rick's impact on European basketball. My Forgotten Legends (Cobi's basketball-history website / podcast). Chloé (Rick's wife) runs, Bread-Winning Moms (blog / podcast) mentioned in this episode.
