What to look for when searching for a Vet for your pooch with Dr. Susan McMillan, owner of Vet to Pet Mobile Veterinary Service in Burlington, Vermont. Well, you have taken home your new BFF, now what? Just like humans today's pets are living longer and having healthier lives. This is due to the availability of high quality veterinary, preventive care, and all of us pet owners' careful monitoring our animals. Today we are going to be talking to Dr. Susan McMillan about tips that can help you find a vet that will become your pet's health care provider? Susan, Welcome to Bark & Wag’s 15 minute Vet Talk – It is a pleasure to have you on the podcast today. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your practice before we begin on the top tips when looking for a vet. Where to look for a veterinarian Ask a friend Animal-owning friends are generally good sources of information. Ask them why they chose their veterinarian. If you believe their expectations of service are similar to yours, you may want to schedule a visit to the facility to evaluate it for yourself. Breed clubs and special interest groups If you have a purebred dog or cat, area breed clubs or rescues can be a good source of information. They have often established a strong relationship with a practice that is very familiar with the potential health-related problems for the particular breed. If you have a non-traditional (i.e., not a cat or a dog) pet, special interest groups in your area may be good sources of information about veterinarians who have special interest in and experience with your species of pet. Directories and the Internet The business pages of a phone book or yellow pages can be sources for contact information on local veterinarians, but the printed books may have fewer resources than online formats. Many state or local veterinary medical associations maintain lists of area practices.   A word of caution about review sites: although online review sites can be valuable for picking out a restaurant, we don’t recommend you rely on them when choosing your veterinarian because the reviews may not reflect the average client experience. Personal references, such as the others we’ve listed here, are more reliable sources for finding a veterinarian.  Your current veterinarian If you are relocating to another city or state, ask your current veterinarian if he or she can recommend a practice where you will be living. Many times they have colleagues in other towns whose practice policies and services are similar to theirs. Your current veterinarian should also provide copies of your pet's medical records to the new practice to ensure your pet's medical history is available to the new staff. When to look for a veterinarian It’s a good idea to start thinking about selecting a veterinarian before acquiring a new pet. In fact, your veterinarian can assist you in selecting a pet that complements your personality, family needs and expectations, work schedule, and lifestyle.  If you have recently moved to a new area, locate a veterinarian before your pet actually needs one. Don't wait until your pet becomes ill or requires emergency care – and remember, the Internet can be a great source of information, but it’s not a substitute for veterinary care. It’s best to have secured a doctor's name and number and become acquainted with the practice and staff before you need to find them during an emergency. Consider scheduling an initial visit soon after arriving at your new home. Your new veterinarian can suggest ways to help your pet become accustomed to your new environment and can inform you of any health risks unique to your area. Pay a visit When deciding on a veterinary practice, first schedule a visit with the veterinarian to discuss your pet and ask questions about fees, services and payment policies. You may want to visit several practices before making a final selection. Considerations when visiting a veterinary practice Different pet owners have different needs, and their reasons for selecting a veterinarian for their pets will differ widely. The following list includes some considerations for selecting a veterinarian who is a good fit for you and your pet. Not all of these considerations may apply to your situation.  Office hours What are the regular office hours? Are they compatible with your schedule? Will they accept e-mails or appointments electronically (if that is your preferred scheduling method)? Who covers the practice when the doctor is unavailable? Do they have after hours emergency coverage or do they refer emergencies to a local emergency clinic? What is the average wait time for making a non-emergency appointment? Professional staff How are telephone calls handled? Can you request an appointment with a specific veterinarian? Does the staff dress and act professionally? Do you feel comfortable talking with the doctor and/or the veterinary technician? How do the staff and doctors interact with your pet? Does your pet seem comfortable with the doctor and staff? Fees and payment What methods of payment are accepted? If you have pet insurance or are considering pet insurance, does the hospital accept your pet’s insurance plan? Are payment plans or financial assistance options available if you need them? Services What is the range of medical services that the practice provides, and does it suit your needs and expectations? If you own an exotic or non-traditional pet, is the veterinarian able and willing to provide care for your pet? Does the hospital have educational materials for pet-owners on a variety of topics? Are there non-medical services such as boarding, grooming, and training classes available? If necessary, does the veterinarian have a network of specialists for referrals? Emergency care How are emergency calls handled during regular office hours and after office hours? Is there an emergency facility in your area should you need it? Facility Is facility clean and orderly? Are there any unpleasant odors? Can you take a tour of the non-public areas? Professional affiliations Are the veterinarians members of a professional veterinary association such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and their state or local veterinary association? What is the hospital policy regarding continuing education for the professional staff? Remember that veterinarians care as much about you as an owner as they do about your pets. They are available to give you the information and resources you need to take the best possible care of your animals. By taking the time to select the veterinarian that you feel confident can provide for your needs as an owner and the medical needs of your pet, you will establish a satisfying and rewarding partnership.

How to Start & Scale Any Business (LIVE)

The Disruptive Entrepreneur

‘The business will only grow at the speed you grow.' In this episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast, Rob dives deep on how you can start and scale any business in any industry. If you ask what should be on your planning board, then first, know your ultimate vision. When you're aware of it, deciding on the strategies, management, sales & marketing, and the product & services you'll offer, will be manageable. Aside from these, Rob also discusses the four stages of scaling up a business, the value of your team in your business, and the benefits of self-actualisation. Everything should get easier to plan and execute since Rob got everything covered today. Start tuning in to discover more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vision – Before you plan on the technical side (operations, human resource, finance, etc.), make sure you've created a clear-cut vision for yourself and the business. But don't be too anal about it you'd end up perfecting it for years before you start the business—you can start with one sentence and make it develop from there. Strategy – When you've already gauged who your end users are, it's easier to plan how you can get your message, products, and services to them. Leadership – Who will execute and refine the business strategies? Management – All individuals involved must understand very well the company's vision and objectives. The team must have the same outcome in mind, so there is always progress. Show your team members your culture and your vision, but you got to let them do their thing their own way. Create an environment where existence of mistakes is accepted, so it's easy for them to get back from it. Sales & Marketing – Sales & marketing is very important to make your vision substantial. Marketing is generating leads while sales is converting leads. Products & Services – What are you offering and selling? Is it information, a product, or a service? The best resources when you start your business are creativity, resourcefulness, enthusiasm/energy, innovation, ability to solve problems, and flexibility. BEST MOMENTS “If you have a vastly compelling vision, that will do a lot of the selling.” “Leadership and management are totally different—usually, great leaders are terrible managers.” “Development is constantly challenging, training, and inspiring from tactical to manager to leadership.” “If you grow yourself personally, you learn to let go of things, you learn to prioritise well.” “How do we contribute to the survival of humanity? By becoming the best version of ourselves.” ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor and property educator. Programme: Session 1: Free Movement of Persons and Establishment What are the consequences of the Brexit process for the immediate and future rights of EU citizens within the UK and UK citizens travelling to or working within the EU. Chair: John Bell Martin Steinfeld (University of Cambridge) Eleanor Spaventa (Bocconi University, Italy) Session 2: External Relations What is the effect of the Brexit process on the UK’s ability to conclude trade agreements? What are the potential frameworks within which these might be developed? Chair: Geoffrey Edwards (POLIS) Markus Gehring (University of Cambridge) Georges Baur (Liechtenstein Institute, Formerly EFTA) Session 3: Goods and Services What is the effect of present and proposed arrangements on the free movement of goods and services? How far are the UK and EU markets to be segmented and how will this affect trading across borders, notably that in Northern Ireland? Chair: Stephen Weatherill (University of Oxford) Laurence Gormley (University of Groningen) Gareth Davies (Vrije University, Amsterdam) Session 4: Competition Law How will the substantive rules and procedures on competition law and state aids be affected by the Brexit process in the short and medium term? Enjoy our App with our compliments! Helpful Reminders From Sharie: Be mindful of the paperwork that needs to be stamped on or before December 31st. Payroll – Did you take any personal payroll (S-Corp) If not, it may impact your personal deductions.  IRA - 401K - Making those final payments before midnight on December 31. (Do not wait until 11:59 PM) Some plans allow you to make payments until April 15th (double check the dates– do not assume) Income – Getting one last customer invoice and receiving the payment (last minute purchases to count on 2018 taxes (expenses or larger item which qualifies for depreciation) Do not expect to be able to file your annual taxes on January 1, 2019. Visit https://www.irs.gov/ for the official 2019 Filing Season Start Date. Prepare W-2s and pass them out as soon as possible – remember to keep a copy. W-2’s and 1099’s have a deadline of January 31st to be mailed out to your employees and 1099 contractors. Be proactive and send out W-9’s now; thereby asking for Federal Tax ID or Social Security Number now. Think about your company tax filing status. I recommend changing from a Sole Prop to an S-Corp. Setting up an S-Corp is done with the Secretary of State in your state. Note, a few states only accept forms from a third party service.  If you are currently an LLC - my recommendation is still to become an S-Corp. If not, change your tax filing status to be treated as an S-Corp. The form needed from the IRS is a Form 2553. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2553.pdf  Unlike many State Agencies, the IRS does not charge to file their forms. You are asking the IRS to change how your company is treated. Why is this important? Because the IRS will only accept the form for the current year in January – February (pushing the deadline to March 15th is risky) otherwise the approval will be for the next year (meaning starting in January 2020) instead of January 2019. Quick Tip: Late Penalties to State and Federal Government Agencies are increasing, and they are looking back at filing dates of past returns for additional fees.  It’s very expensive to borrow money from the government.  In case you need it, it never hurts to ask for a payment plan. Rule of Thumb When Asking: Be Nice, Be Polite. Ask for a payment plan to be extended for as long as possible and with payments as low as possible. Sometimes no matter how you ask – the person you are talking to is not helpful, but usually, if it is within the rules they will help you out. Cash Flow - Every little bit helps!  In Conclusion: Helping Contractors around the world is one of the reasons we added the FastEasyAccountingStore.com Follow our blogs, listen to Contractor Success M.A.P. For many Christians, the Methodist tradition is one of their most important sources of hymnody. Dr. Martin V. Clarke's new book British Methodist Hymnody explores the roots of this rich repertoire as well as the distinctive features of Methodist worship today. Dr. Martin V. Clarke (faculty page, Twitter) is Lecturer in Music at The Open University and author of the new book British Methodist Hymnody: Theology, Heritage, and Experience. Martin covers five main areas in our conversation: How Methodists leaders have used hymnody that doesn't line up with their theological viewpointsAltered hymn lyrics, including Charles Wesley'sHow Methodist leaders have determined whether or not popular music styles should be used in church servicesWhat we see in Methodist services today and how a praise band can function like a choirWhat makes Methodist hymnody distinctly "Methodist" Enjoying this podcast episode? Business plans are very important for all types of businesses, large and small.   Business plans for businesses are just like maps for tourists.  It helps you determine where you’re going to go and to be able to measure along the way whether you’re on target.   Some of the key things contained in developing a business planning strategy is to determine where you want to be in one year, two years, five years and 10 years.  It also helps to give some consideration as to what your exit strategy might be.   Accountants and business advisers can assist you to prepare business plans.  In fact, I recommend that you have a conversation with your accountant or business adviser, to help you in the business planning process.   Where do you start?   My recommendation is you start with a Think Tank Meeting with your key team members or whole team if you like, along with your key advisers.  Appoint someone to be the facilitator, in many cases, this should be your accountant or business adviser, to guide you through the business planning process.  That person should then prepare the overall business plan for the business.   Some of the key areas you will be looking to discuss in the business planning process include:   Business Performance Review of your current business performance.  How is the business performing in all of its aspects?   Resources What are the resources of the business?  Do you need new resources?   Products and Services What products/services are you producing?  Are they all profitable?  Are they all contributing?  Do you need to make some changes?  Are they still fashionable?  Are they meeting the market’s requirements?  Are your customers happy?   Profit Analysis This is the time to do some profit analysis on various products and services and other products that you might be looking to introduce.   Market What’s happening in the market in which your business operates?   Customers Are you getting feedback from your customers on changes that they would like to see introduced?  Are you meeting their expectations?   Location Is the location of your business OK?  Will it still be OK in another five years’ time?   Competition What are your competitors doing?  There’s no law against copying competitors, as long as you’re not copying copyright material or patents, however you can learn a lot by observing what your competitors are doing.   System Have you developed systems to improve the reporting of the performance within the business?  This might mean dividing the business into a number of different operations (eg transport department, retail store, the office).  Within workshops, a job costing system will assist in determining profit or loss for individual jobs.  This will help management by being able to view actual results for each component of the business, rather than putting everything in one of those horrible Statement of Financial Performance Accounts that have all your businesses just thrown into one.  Does that really help you run your business?  I don’t think so.   Work in Progress/Stock Control If you’re in a business that’s producing work on an individual work in progress or job basis, have you introduced a computerised work in progress/stock control system?  The benefit of this is that you will then receive a report on the individual performance of each job, not lumped together in one overall account.   I’m working with a client at present that’s been lumping everything into one Statement of Financial Performance Account for a turnover of around $5M - $6M.  We’re now dissecting it into individual job costing results.  I believe they will be able to better manage their business.   Suppliers Do you need to talk to your suppliers to improve your arrangements with them, by discussing some of your strategies with them?  Give them some advanced notice that you might like some particular support.  This might be a personality that comes to your area that your supplier arranged for a visit.   Team Is your team adequately trained?  Are they motivated?  Do you have regular toolbox meetings or team meetings so they can understand what’s happening within the business?   Marketing Is your marketing plan appropriate for 2016/17?  Does the business have a social media strategy?  It’s difficult to envisage that anyone these days can run a business without having a social media strategy and, for this matter, a website.   Sales Who does the selling in your organisation?  Is there close cooperation and communication between the marketing person, the sales person, the product developer or are they all just going off and doing their own individual thing?  It’s very important that it’s coordinated.   Organisational Structure Is the organisation structure suitable for your business?   Risks Have you looked at the risks that confront your business operation?  Some of the key risks are insurance and the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).  There’s at least another 50 significant risk areas that most businesses in Australia have.  Businesses need to develop strategies for them.   Implementation Once you’ve developed the business plan, it’s very important that, as part of the process, action plans are prepared for every item and allocations are given as to who is going to be responsible for implementing the strategies.  Then, on a monthly basis, a Board of Directors, Board of Advice or management meeting review what’s happening on the actual implementation.   You could have a formal retreat meeting every six months.  Go away somewhere, separate from the office, with no day-to-day phone calls happening.  Review where the business is going.   Find an Accountant/Adviser You might ask: “Where are these accountants that can undertake this type of work because our accountant is only interested in preparing income tax returns?”   ESS Small Business has a directory of accountants who are interested in supplying a wider range of services, commonly known as “business advisory services”, to small/medium enterprises.  This directory is called “Find an Accountant/Adviser”.   Visit www.esssmallbusiness.com.au and click on “Find an Accountant/Adviser” menu tab.  All you need to do is to type in your postcode and the system will then show you accountants/advisers in or near your postcode who offer a wider range of commercial services to small/medium enterprises.   ESS Small Business contains other free articles and articles for sale, prepared by approximately 20 other businesses, on a wide range of small/medium enterprise matters.   ESS Small Business also presents webinars, free of charge, covering a wide range of small business matters.  These webinars are also recorded and are available for viewing.   We will be presenting a webinar on Tuesday 14th June 2016 at 3pm AEST, featuring “Business Planning”.  Click here to register to attend, free of charge.   Whilst you are on the ESS Small Business’ website, why not have a look at the offerings from a wide range of business people who are able to assist small/medium enterprises?   A copy of a complimentary article, “Planning Your Business – Small Businesses”, is attached with this transcript.   If you have any questions on services that accountants can offer, please don’t hesitate to contact us.     Peter Towers Managing Director
