In this episode of the Econ Dev Show, host Dane Carlson sits down with Clint O'Neal, Executive Director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, to discuss the evolution of economic development over his 17-year career spanning both Missouri and Arkansas. O'Neal shares his path from junior high teacher to economic development leader, highlights successful foreign direct investment projects, and emphasizes the importance of customer service in working with businesses. He also offers perspective on how economic development is adapting to changing workforce priorities, with quality of life and community attractiveness becoming increasingly important factors as people choose where to live before finding employment. Like this show? Please leave us a review here (https://econdevshow.com/rate-this-podcast/) — even one sentence helps! 10 Actionable Takeaways for Economic Developers Focus intensely on customer service when working with prospective businesses, as exceptional service can differentiate your location. Recognize that workers increasingly choose locations first and jobs second, making quality of life initiatives critical. Develop "risk-free" industrial sites that accelerate timelines and build company confidence in your location. Leverage data and AI tools to speed up information exchange with site selectors and businesses. Build strong relationships between economic development efforts and government leadership for coordinated responses. Create memorable experiences for visiting executives that showcase your region's unique advantages. Invest in outdoor recreation and quality of life amenities that make your community attractive to today's mobile workforce. Understand that economic development success often comes from coordinating multiple elements (tax policy, site readiness, incentives) simultaneously. Network with other economic development professionals to continuously learn and improve practices. Consider how shifts in business priorities (such as location flexibility) can be leveraged to benefit your community's recruitment efforts. Special Guest: Clint O'Neal.
In this episode of iCantCU, I share a jaw-dropping moment when the director of a Pennsylvania state agency called me a four-letter word. Yes, really. It all ties back to my ongoing fight for transparency and inclusion in the Business Enterprise Program (BEP), which provides blind entrepreneurs with opportunities to run vending and food service businesses on government properties. Despite promises of reopening the program, Pennsylvania hasn't trained a new blind vendor in over five years. With the number of operators dwindling from 200 to just 20, and many nearing retirement, the program's future is in jeopardy. I break down the bureaucratic roadblocks, potential conflicts of interest, and the resistance to allowing public attendance at key meetings—including my own. I also discuss the upcoming PA Association of Blind Merchants Spring Fling on May 17 in Harrisburg. It's a chance to support blind entrepreneurs, network, and raise awareness. Today's podcast show is a repurposing of the second half of a webinar we produced on January 17, 2025. That webinar was Part 3 of our webinar series entitled “The Impact of the Election on the CFPB and Others.” In Part 3, we focus on the role of state attorneys general in a rapidly shifting CFPB environment. Our previous podcast show, released on Tuesday February 11th, was a repurposing of the first half of our January 17th webinar in which Alan Kaplinsky had a “fireside chat” with Matthew J. Platkin, the New Jersey Attorney General. See here. The importance of Part 3 is underscored by the recent actions taken by President Trump to fire Rohit Chopra as Director of the CFPB and to appoint new Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, and then new Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director, Russell Vought, as Acting Directors, Messrs. Bessent, and Vought have essentially stopped all activities of the CFPB for the time being. During today's podcast show, Mike Kilgarriff, Joseph Schuster, Adrian King and Jenny Perkins of Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group discussed in detail the following issues, among others: • CFPB post-election messaging to state attorneys general providing a roadmap to them on powers they may exercise under federal law, including the use of the UDAAP provision of Dodd-Frank (particularly the “abusive” prong) • The probable decline in collaboration with the CFPB following the change in administration • More networking of state attorneys general • What can we expect from state legislatures in enacting new consumer financial services protection laws? • What can we expect from state attorneys general and other state agencies in promulgating new consumer financial services protection laws? • The continuing need for companies to maintain a robust compliance management system Parts 1, 2 and 3 of our webinar series appear here, here, and here. Our podcast shows (repurposing Parts 1 and 2 of our webinar series) appear here, here, here, and here. The title of Part 1 is: “The Impact of the election on the CFPB: Regulations and other written guidance, which featured Alan Kaplinsky's “fireside chat” with David Silberman who held senior positions at the CFPB for almost 10 years during the Directorships of Cordray, Mulvaney, and Kraninger. Part 2 is: “The Impact of the Election on the CFPB: Supervision and Enforcement, which featured Alan Kaplinsky's “fireside chat” with former Director Kathy Kraninger during Trump‘s first term in office. Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel and former chair for 25 years of the Consumer Financial Services Group, hosts the discussion.
With the Minnesota House session finally underway, lawmakers are tackling fraud. On Tuesday morning, a house committee heard several bills aimed at eliminating fraud in state agencies. That afternoon, a senate committee heard a bill that looks to create an Office of the Inspector General, which would devote an entire agency dedicated to identifying fraud. The bill's author is Sen. Heather Gustafson, DFL-Vadnais Heights. Gustafson spoke in front of the committee. She joined MPR News host Nina Moini to explain the role and goal of having an Office of the Inspector General.
Donald Trump and Russell Vought of OMB shut down the CFPB. Plus, USAID had been spending money providing legal assistance for transgender refugees and much more. Visit the Howie Carr Radio Network website to access columns, podcasts, and other exclusive content.

Text a Message to the ShowToday we're talking to Anthony Baumgart; he's a former local and state level narcotics agent who worked in California. Tony had almost 30 years in law enforcement, but when it came for his last day at work, he experienced a failure in leadership that sometimes happens in law enforcement. You risk your life and give decades of hard work, only to be shown the door… almost like they're glad to be rid of you. Back in 2021, following calls for police reform after the murder of George Floyd, Washington state did something unique. Legislators created a state-funded agency to investigate instances of serious or fatal police use of force – even ones that had happened in the past. Many believe the Office of Independent Investigations has potential to improve trust between marginalized communities and law enforcement. But some say it's taking the office too long to get going. So far, the OII hasn't officially launched a single investigation. Melanie Henshaw, an Indigenous Affairs reporter at InvestigateWest, spoke to reform advocates and agency officials about the obstacles that are keeping the office from quickly meeting its intended purpose. Beginning July 1, Illinois will have a new state agency set to roll out over the next three years to handle all things early childhood development. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 1 Tuesday in Chicago. He said transferring early childhood services from three different state agencies to a new one will streamline things for parents. “The Department of Early Childhood, our first ever unified state agency dedicated to supporting Illinois' youngest children and their parents,” Pritzker said.

Mike Switzer interviews William Floyd, director of the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) in Columbia.
Illinois state agencies are being directed to prepare for $800 million less than what Gov. J.B. Pritzker proposed for the fiscal year 2025 budget. The General Assembly has until May 31 to pass a budget with simple majorities. Fiscal 2025 begins July 1. Pritzker proposed a $52.7 billion budget in February that included about $1 billion in tax increases. In a memo obtained by The Center Square sent out to state agency directors Wednesday, Deputy Gov. Andy Manar said it has "become clear that opposition to proposed revenue is significant enough to direct agencies to prepare for the possibility of reductions to proposed spending" and "we must prepare to implement a potential balanced budget scenario with $800 million less in available revenue." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/illinois-in-focus/support
MARK CASKEY OF STEEL NATION - EXPANDS ON HIS LATEST OP-ED IN THE PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE... Read here Mark Caskey founded Steel Nation Buildings in 2008. As a resident of Western Pennsylvania, Mark followed the industry that cropped up in the region since the beginning of the Marcellus Shale boom. When he visited one of the first Marcellus compressor stations located near his office, Mark was appalled by the noise levels. Drawing upon his years of experience erecting steel buildings for the coal industry, Mark saw an opportunity to serve the oil and gas industry with specialty-designed steel buildings that are cool, quiet, and safe. Steel Nation Buildings was then conceived. Mark Caskey is instrumental in leading the entire Design-Build process for Steel Nation. From the design of projects, through estimating, contract negotiations, scheduling and safety, Mark oversees the construction management of all energy-related projects. To date, Mark has lead the Steel Nation team in over 1,500 projects for all of the leading mid-stream, gas processing and transmission energy companies. Mark Caskey: State agencies aren't listening to thepeople who produce the energy

Agent: "Good question! While that might seem like a good idea, working with multiple Realtors simultaneously is like trying to drive two cars at once – it's not practical, creates confusion, and won't get you to your destination. Countrywide, buyer agreements are now standard practice among brokers. Any other buyer's agent you consider working with will also require the exclusive agreement, so it's not just to work with me. The agreement ensures clarity and accountability in our relationship, allowing me to fully commit my time and expertise to serving your needs effectively. An agent or broker who doesn't ask for your signature is practicing unethically and is out of compliance with what's required. It just makes sense to solidify our commitment to each other."
