Jack Shepherd was a petty, pretty thief. He wasn't very good at it, so he got caught a lot. And he escaped a lot. Just like Henry More Smith. He, too, couldn't stop stealing and couldn't stop freeing himself from prison life. Sometimes, being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have deadly consequences. Sometimes, it's not just the place that's the problem; it's the who that you're with. In the two cases we discuss in this episode, neither of these men intended to kill their victims. They did not set out that morning to take the life of another human being. Nor did they gain anything from the demise of their victims. But they were responsible for their deaths all the same. The first case is in London, England, where twenty-four-year-old Charlotte "Charli" Brown from Essex had been looking for love on Tinder for some time but had had no luck. She wasn't interested in having a good time; she was looking for a long-term relationship. Before long, she began talking to a thirty-year-old web designer named Jack Shepherd. On December 8th, 2015, a Tuesday night, Jack took Charlotte to a restaurant on the 32nd floor and wined and dined her. Everything was going well until Charlotte was killed in an accident involving Jack Shepherd's speedboat. The second case is a request from Jenn K on behalf of her mother. Thirty-one years ago, on August 30th, 1993, the body of a 33-year-old Nancy Lynn Manni was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay just 250 yards from the Cove Point Lighthouse in Cove Point, Maryland. Nancy had lacerations on the back of her legs and buttocks, which were most likely made from a propeller. The coroner felt that Nancy had been alive and trying to swim away when she was run over by a boat. It would take years and being featured on Unsolved Mysteries to discover who was responsible for Nancy's death.Join Cam and Jen as we discuss 'The Speedboat Killers: The Deaths of Charlotte Brown & Nancy Manni.'Seeker's Notes sponsored this week's episode.Whenever you need a break from your day, you need to try Seeker's notes. After heaping shade on the character of Jack Shepherd for weeks on end, Phil and Alex contend with what might just be THE ULTIMATE JACKISODE. Is the character fully redeemed, or will the return of Simpin' Jack kill this episode's goodwill along with any plot momentum? Did the departure of J.J. Abrams throw this season off the path to GOATness, or clear the way for Lindelof's ride to glory? Phil and Alex bring these topics to debate, along with the possible influence of the obscure Nickelodeon series 'Space Cases,' the attendant moral quandaries of a trolley problem vs. a ferry riddle, and whether they would rather have a dark lord or in his place a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn, treacherous as the seas, and you know, stronger than the foundations of the earth. Sounds hot, tbh. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Our second look at the work of prolific television playwright Jack Rosenthal. This time a celebrated Granada production from January 1976 starring Jack Shepherd, Mark Wing-Davey and Joe Black: ’Ready When You Are, Mr McGill’ directed by Mike Newell. The play formed the first of 7 episodes of the 1976 anthology series Red Letter Day and concerns the all-important day in the life of TV extra Mr McGill as he finally gets lines to say in a production. However, all does not go to plan and Mr McGill ends up adding to the frustrations of the fraught film crew, and especially its director, Phil, who is dangerously close to a nervous breakdown. Andy and Martin compare the production to its 2003 remake with Bill Nighy, Tom Courtenay and Amanda Holden, consider the lot of the TV extra, now referred to as supporting artists, and the meta nature of a TV drama about making TV drama. People may have caught Covid-19 because an Excel spreadsheet failure stopped nearly 16,000 cases being transferred swiftly to the test-and-trace system. The mistake's baffled medics like former World Health Organisation doctor Professor Karol Sikora, who joins the podcast to tell us it's not the first error, and the entire system needs overhauled. He also explains how the updated set of figures, including the previously lost numbers, actually show the country doing as expected against the disease, with a lower number of people needing to be hospitalised than thought. And, James Bond's under fire, which is probably normal for him, but this time it's film critics taking aim. There's anger after cinema chain Cineworld decided to shut its theatres in the UK and US because the new Bond movie, No Time to Die, has been delayed again. Jack Shepherd, from Total Film magazine, tells us why movie bosses made the decision, and how constant delays of blockbusters are causing problems.
