379 Leaving The Legacy You Choose Inevitably, we will be faced with the endless march of time, we will have a moment when we have the thought of how we want people to speak about us when we are gone. Are you making stories that reflect how you want to be remembered? Are you living in a way that solidifies the legacy you want to leave? Do you surround yourself with people who inspire, drive, and temper your ambition? In todays episode, Sarah Elkins and Bryan Abdul Collins discuss the importance of living a life without regrets, of surrounding ourselves with people that help us be the best versions of ourselves, and living in the moment with those we love.    Highlights Facing the inevitable and considering what it all means. How much time are you wasting by paying attention to the things that don't matter? What is your legacy? What do you want people to think of when they remember you? What is the evidence of who you were and the stories you carried that you will leave behind?    Quotes “I just want to teach myself something.” “I faced the edge of this life and really considered what it all means, and I try to move from that place.” “Raising your children is your job and your relationship with them afterwards is your performance review.” “We are living in our own stories.” “I had to fall in love with the story of who I was becoming.”   Mentioned in this episode Stephen Moegling's Elephant Journal Article Stephen Moegling's LinkedIn   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, You've heard our conversation switch back and forth between what we're doing now to live our legacy, what we want people to know about us, and how we want people to talk about us when we're gone. We've talked about what we bring to the table as coaches and what you need to be looking for in your next coach.  And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Bryan I am a career and life coach specializing in helping ambitious creatives break through career plateaus and reconnect with their creative expression. I primarily work with mid-to-senior-level professionals in creative services—art directors, designers, creative directors—who are at inflection points in their careers, seeking transitions, feeling stuck, or wanting to deepen their impact while maintaining a sustainable work-life balance. Through one-on-one strategic conversations, I provide career clarity, direction setting, and personal narrative refinement. With deep empathetic listening, industry expertise, and practical tools, I help clients overcome internal barriers, align their work with their aspirations, and navigate their careers with confidence and purpose. Be sure to check out Bryan's LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook! As well as his website Poetic State!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. 378 Demonstrating Who You Are Through Story   Through the art of storytelling people can get a glimpse into who we are in the way that is most meaningful to show. Through our stories and how we tell them we can show an entire room of people, or just that one significant person, who we are and what matters to us.    Highlights Using story to show who you are as a person and what matters most to you. Creating an environment where everyone feels safe, welcome, and willing to share their stories. Reflection and the importance of examining our past actions.    Quotes “Every professional benefits when they can share stories that demonstrate their skills, values, and character.” “In 90 minutes we created an environment of significant trust, support, and vulnerability.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What stories do you have that are integral to who you are as a person? What stories adequately show your character, value, and traits? Write these stories down, fine tune them, and share them in a way that continues to reflect your character. And, as always, thank you for listening.  As I mentioned I am celebrating my five year book-versary, starting today Your Stories Don't Define You was published May 31, 2020. 377 The Art of Storytelling: A Controlled Burn in The Forest Of Life   Throughout life we have a tendency to collect things, whether they be stories, memories, or physical objects, and more often than not we cling to these things despite them no longer serving us in any meaningful capacity. Which is why it is important to sit back, look at your hoard and realize you are not a dragon who must keep every single piece of scrap. You can thank the item, story, or memory and leave it behind so that you can open up to new possibilities and new meaningful things to put in your life. In todays episode Sarah Elkins educates us on the importance of controlled burns in the national parks of the west, as well as the importance of our own “controlled burns” to clear away the clutter and make way for new, healthy growth in our lives.    Highlights Protecting our future and our communities, means protecting our environment too. Sometimes you need to shed the dead parts of the past in order to grow.  What strategies can you use to do your own “controlled burn”, to remove the things in your life that no longer serve you in a meaningful way?   Quotes “Even in my life activities I'm finding I need to shed things like relationships that no longer serve me, relationships that don't feel reciprocal at all, commitments that feel too obligatory and not meaningful. And work activities that aren't moving the needle for me in income or intrinsic reward.” “A controlled burn requires research, planning, and a whole lot of patience.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, If you're feeling overwhelmed with to much mental and physical clutter it might be time for you to take inventory too. Ask yourself the tough questions on what you truly need and want in your life and your home. And I hope you'll take the next steps to research and plan and patiently reduce that clutter.  And, as always, thank you for listening.    As I mentioned I am celebrating my five year book-versary, starting today Your Stories Don't Define You was published May 31, 2020. Starting this podcast was a wakeup call for me, I realized I was coaching my guests in sharing their pivotal moment stories, and they were finding great value in our time together, way beyond any promotional opportunity the podcast was offering. Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

375 Practicing What You Preach It's important in life, whether you are running your own business or in your daily life, to practice what you preach. Not only do you avoid being seen as hypocritical but often the best person to give you advice is you. Consult with other coaches and counselors, ask the opinions of those you love and value, do whatever you need to in order to put yourself on the path to fulfillment and success. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Mike Trugman discuss practicing their own advice, as well as the importance of doing what you will say you will in order to put yourself in a better environment that will help you grow and thrive.    Highlights How do you approach your own self learning and self development? What do you need to do more of to bring yourself more fulfillment? Are you in a place that lets you grow and thrive? Or do you need to find somewhere new to grow?   Quotes “We think we're really sneaky, or really good at hiding these aspects of ourselves but there is no separate ‘I'm playful over here' ‘I'm not playful over here.' you are who you are.” “In some capacity we have helped people with public speaking, each of us.” “We've been conditioned for the most part in our society that to be successful you need to be relentlessly hard on yourself, and give up a lot of aspects of your life. And I love to work with people who are doing the courageous work of: What if I were really kind to myself? What could life look like if I was kinder and gentler to myself? And almost in a way, allowed my success to unfold, rather than something I need to grasp and control and attain. And if I lived that way, how would that make my personal relationships and the rest of my life better?” “You can have everything you want in your life and also feel good about yourself at the same time, and it doesn't have to be one or the other. Which is what I think a lot of us are taught and believe.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I would love for you to think about a time when something went sideways for you. I know we all have episodes that went a little sideways. But when was a time where things really went sideways for you and someone showed up to be your guide? It might've been in a negative way, it might've been somebody who did something so bad that you chose a different path in spite or to spite this person. But more than likely, you hit a point where things went so sideways that only somebody who loves you could help guide you out of that. Think about that moment, write it down, collect that story because as Mike said; it's not all about I did this and now I'm here, it's what obstacles did you overcome to get here? Because that's the story that inspires.  And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Mike Mike Trugman is a Professional Life and Career Coach who helps his clients move from fear to thriving with purpose, passion and fulfillment. Chapter 1:Summary of The Slight Edge"The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson presents the concept that small, consistent actions can lead to significant positive results over time. Olson emphasizes the power of incremental progress and the importance of daily choices in shaping one's life and achieving success.Key themes of the book include:1. The Philosophy of the Slight Edge: Olson argues that success isn't necessarily the result of major efforts or breakthroughs, but rather the accumulation of small, seemingly insignificant daily habits that compound over time.2. Mindset and Attitude: A positive attitude and a growth mindset are crucial. Olson stresses the need to develop a mindset that embraces learning and perseverance, as these qualities enable individuals to overcome challenges and setbacks.3. Daily Habits: Olson identifies key daily disciplines, such as reading, exercising, and maintaining healthy relationships, that can lead to personal and professional achievements. He encourages readers to focus on small, manageable actions that contribute to their long-term goals.4. The Importance of Decision-Making: Every decision, no matter how small, has a cumulative effect. Olson teaches that consciously making positive choices consistently is fundamental to leveraging the Slight Edge.5. Taking Responsibility: The book emphasizes personal responsibility and accountability. Olson encourages readers to take control of their lives by understanding that they have the power to choose their actions and mindset.Overall, "The Slight Edge" serves as a motivational guide, illustrating how adopting a philosophy of small, consistent improvements can lead to lasting success and fulfillment in various areas of life.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Slight Edge"The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness" by Jeff Olson is a self-help book that emphasizes the power of small, consistent actions and their cumulative effect over time. While the book is not a traditional narrative with characters or plot points, it does contain key concepts that could be aligned with character development and thematic exploration. Here are some key elements: Key Concepts1. The Power of Small Efforts: Olson introduces the idea that small, daily decisions can compound over time to lead to significant success or failure. This concept is central to the book's premise and represents the foundation of personal growth.2. Mindset Shift: A critical element of the Slight Edge is the need to adopt a proactive and positive mindset. Olson encourages readers to focus on improving their daily habits and choices, recognizing that every small decision contributes to their overall life trajectory.3. Consistency: The importance of consistency in applying small disciplines is emphasized. Olson suggests that the commitment to daily habits—no matter how insignificant they may seem—is what leads to transformative change.4. The Success Curve vs. the Failure Curve: Olson illustrates two curves – one representing success and the other failure. The success curve shows how small, positive actions lead to gradual improvement, while negative actions create a downward spiral. Understanding these curves helps readers visualize the long-term implications of their choices.5. Self-Learning and Growth: The book encourages continuous self-improvement and lifelong learning. Olson stresses that personal development is a journey rather than a destination and requires ongoing dedication. Character Development (Metaphorically)Although "The Slight Edge" does not have characters in the conventional sense, readers can think of themselves as the main character in their journey of self-improvement. The development is as follows:1. The Protagonist's Awakening: The reader (or "protagonist") initially may not...

Why Occasional Workshops Aren't Enough: The Case for Self-Learning Resources

Digital Insights

Hi everyone.I run a lot of workshops within organizations. They're great for connecting people, allowing space for questions, and inspiring teams. But here's the thing: I'm not convinced they're the best method of training staff in most cases.Don't get me wrong, workshops have their place and I enjoy running them. They create a shared learning environment, foster discussion, and can be incredibly motivating. However, they come with some significant drawbacks that we need to address.Key Challenges with WorkshopsFirst, let's consider the retention problem. Unless people immediately apply what they've learned in a workshop, they tend to forget it. Even if they do use the information right away, without regular application, that knowledge fades over time. It's just how our brains work. Then there's the issue of staff turnover. When employees who attended a workshop leave, they take that knowledge with them. New hires miss out unless you repeat the workshop, which can be expensive and logistically challenging.Speaking of logistics, getting everyone in the same place at the same time is always a headache. There's always someone on vacation, out sick, or unable to attend for various reasons. This leads to knowledge gaps within teams.Workshops also tend to be one-size-fits-all solutions, which is problematic when you have attendees with varying levels of experience. Some people might be bored, while others struggle to keep up.Lastly, workshops require intense concentration, which can be exhausting for participants. By the end of a long session, people's attention spans are stretched thin, and their ability to absorb information diminishes. The Alternative: Self-Learning ResourcesSo, what's the alternative? I'm a strong advocate for self-learning resources broken down into small, focused lessons. These could teach specific skills like "how to run a 5-second test" or "how to edit a page on the CMS." I find this approach far more effective when I implement them in organizations. These resources could take various forms: short videos, step-by-step written instructions, or even checklists. Some content could be universal and purchased off-the-shelf (like "writing for the web"), while other material would need to be custom-made for your organization.Imagine organizing all of this in a UX playbook alongside policies, procedures, standards, and more general educational content like "why accessibility matters." You could even integrate these resources directly into your tools. For example, embedding how-to guides within your CMS so people can access instructions right when they need them.Speaking of playbooks, if you're an agency owner or freelancer, I've created one just for you! It includes easy-to-follow guides, client education materials, and tools to help simplify your web design projects. Check it out here.Benefits of Self-Learning ResourcesI've found that self-learning resources offer numerous benefits for organizations:Consistent knowledge base: Everyone accesses the same information, ensuring standardized knowledge across the organization, regardless of when they joined.Self-paced learning: Staff can engage with material when it's most relevant and revisit as needed, accommodating different learning styles and schedules.Always available: No waiting for the next workshop to learn crucial skills. This immediate access can significantly reduce downtime and boost productivity.Scalable: Once created, these resources can be used by unlimited employees across various departments and locations.Cost-effective: After the initial investment, ongoing costs are minimal compared to repeated workshops, offering a high return on investment over time.Flexible: Easy to update and expand as processes and technologies evolve, ensuring learning materials remain current and relevant.Personalized learning: Employees can focus on areas most relevant to their roles or skill gaps, creating a more tailored experience.Measurable results: Digital learning resources often include analytics, allowing you to track engagement and assess training effectiveness.Continuous learning culture: Readily available resources encourage employees to take ownership of their professional development, fostering a growth mindset.Remote team support: Self-learning resources are particularly valuable for organizations with remote workers or multiple office locations, ensuring consistent training regardless of physical location.Finding the Right BalanceDon't get me wrong – I'm not saying we should completely do away with workshops. They still have value, especially for team building, brainstorming, and tackling complex problems that benefit from group discussion. But they shouldn't be your only, or even primary, method of training and knowledge sharing.By investing in a robust set of self-learning materials, you're not just training your current staff – you're building a knowledge infrastructure that will serve your organization for years to come. It's about creating a culture of continuous learning, where employees are empowered to seek out information and improve their skills on an ongoing basis.Moving ForwardSo, the next time you're tempted to schedule another workshop, ask yourself: Is this the most effective way to share this knowledge? Or could you create a resource that will have a more lasting impact?

A recent announcement on X boasted a tuned model with pretty outstanding performance, and claimed these results were achieved through Reflection Tuning. However, people were unable to reproduce the results. We dive into some recent drama in the AI community as a jumping off point for a discussion about Reflection 70B.In 2023, there was a paper written about Reflection Tuning that this new model (Reflection 70B) draws concepts from. Reflection tuning is an optimization technique where models learn to improve their decision-making processes by “reflecting” on past actions or predictions. This method enables models to iteratively refine their performance by analyzing mistakes and successes, thus improving both accuracy and adaptability over time. By incorporating a feedback loop, reflection tuning can address model weaknesses more dynamically, helping AI systems become more robust in real-world applications where uncertainty or changing environments are prevalent.Dat Ngo (AI Solutions Architect at Arize), talks to Rohan Pandey (Founding Engineer at Reworkd) about Reflection 70B, Reflection Tuning, the recent drama, and the importance of double checking your research. To learn more about ML observability, join the Arize AI Slack community or get the latest on our LinkedIn and Twitter.

Developing a learning mindset and mastering self-learning at work are critical to developing a management career. Very few managers get formal training which means if you want to get good, a growth mindset is a massive help. I explain what a learning mindset is, why it is so important to develop for managers and give you 5 tips to help you building a growth mindset at work. The will to learn as quickly as possible is key in how to be a better manager. ---- Additional Resources and Videos you will find useful:Michael Jordan on failure leading to success https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_EyPX3CD-g----I think developing a growth mindset for success is a must in leadership and management. There is so much competition, getter better quickly is a key way to stand out. Plus the quicker you learn and improve the more enjoyable managing will become for you and your team. In my experience, the power of a learning mindset is massive. Few managers get taught, even by their own bosses. Most have to rely on self-learning and get their growth mindset motivation into gear.Developing a mindset for successful learning starts with your attitude and your mental approach. A growth mindset vs fixed mindset is one that is open to learning, that looks for opportunities to learn and improve from failures and successes. People with a learning mindset believe - at the core of their being - that when they work to learn and improve, they will keep getting better.Developing a growth mindset does take work. Learning and improving does take work. An incredibly important question – “Do you view the goals you are trying to reach as worth putting in that work?” Is yes, work to build a growth mindset. If no, stop reading. How to develop learning mindset starts with changing the way you think and react to situations. You can absolutely do this. Look for opportunities to learn: from failures and successes; from all feedback no matter how negative or unrealistic; from others around you – their successes and mistakes; from any opportunity you have. Take this mindset and you will build resilience, determination and commitment. All very good qualities to have to be successful in whatever you do at work and outside. I share 5 tips that have been incredibly useful for me to firstly develop a learning mindset and to work at self learning at work; and then to keep putting in the work and effort to find ways to learn from as much as I can. To be successful, a learning mindset and the will to work are both vital attributes. If you have any questions on “How The Best Managers Master Self-Learning At Work”, please email me at support@enhance.training and I will get back to you.Jess Colesenhance.training

The latest artificially intelligent innovations have been unveiled at the VivaTech show in Paris. From the tip of a nozzle, a very human body part is emerging–a piece of skin. This bio-printing technology has been developed by beauty giant L'Oréal. The company has long used reconstructed skin to test products on. But this latest innovation makes it more real than ever. L'Oréal's Skin Technology was announced on May 22 at the VivaTech technology show in Paris. L'Oréal says it is combining biology and cutting-edge tech to create testing models that mimic the complexity of real human skin. "You have the ability to now 3D print cells. You have the ability to use AI software to be able to reconstruct hair models and skin models and all of that through a world where then you combine it with cells and tech, you can be able to create any model that you want. And I think this is going to be a major revolution in the future when it comes to testing in the health industry, but also on skin," says Guive Balooch, Global Vice President, Technology Incubator at L'Oréal. It's not just intended for use by the beauty brand alone. L'Oréal also expects health industry start-ups and research institutes to try out the Skin Technology system. It helps avoid testing on animals. It also means a diverse array of skins can be manufactured, from precisely placed pigmentation blemishes, to different skin tones, and even differently aged skin, wrinkles and all. And L'Oréal claims their accuracy is close to perfect. Also trying to mimic the human body is a hand by Esper Bionics. The engineering company wants to create prosthetics that function more like the real thing for amputees and people born without limbs. The robotic hands use sensors to detect muscle movements in the user's limb which trigger the prosthetic to move. AI is the dominant theme at this year's VivaTech. From fashion and beauty, to health, to the workplace, there are huge numbers of companies trying to convince visitors that they are using artificial intelligence in the best possible way. "Usually people think of a telos as an endpoint, but what if we think of telos as a dynamic process that sustains a thriving trajectory for the individual and the world around them? The imago Dei, which is deeply and inherently relational and social—we image God by being our unique selves in unity. So there is the particularity of personhood and the relatedness with other persons, God, and all of creation. And so that was what the reciprocating self was. It's 'How do I grow as a fully differentiated person in relationship and increasing intimacy, increasing contribution with the world around me?' To thrive then is to pursue that fullness of self in the context of intimacy and accountability and relationships—not just with those closest to me ... that's essential—but also in contribution to the world beyond the self. How does our faith, how does our devotion, fuel us to want to continue to reciprocate when life is hard? When there's a pandemic? We need something beyond ourselves, a power beyond ourselves, an orientation beyond ourselves to fuel that interrelatedness between our particularity and the greater good." (Pamela Ebstyne King)IntroductionAt the bedrock of our being as persons is relationality: our ability to be known, to be loved, and to know and love in return. But whoa whoa whoa. Wait a minute. What kind of claim is that? Is that theology or psychology? We're used to hearing that from the likes of the Jewish existential philosopher and theologian Martin Buber—he's well known for his suggestion that an intimate I-Thou relationship is what makes for our conscious personhood. It'd be impossible to become an “I” without coming into direct contact with a “You” and seeing it as a “You.” But how interesting that research studies in developmental psychology find just that. You can for instance turn to John Bowlby and the beginnings of attachment theory to find that this theological claim holds up once you start testing it with the tools psychological. But more than holds up, the claim that relationality is fundamental to personhood starts to expand and develop nuance by examining the most universal by application in the unique, particular circumstances. Famous psychological experiments like the “Still Face” show how central the reciprocal response of our earliest attachment figure is for our mental health, even as babies. (Check below for an excruciating video example of the Still Face Experiment.)But this is just one way that developmental psychology might offer some interesting tools to theological reflection. And today we're continuing a new series of episodes on For the Life of the World all about “Bringing Psychology to Theology”—we're exploring the tools of psychological sciences that might contribute to a deeper, greater, more nuanced theological understanding of the world. Last week we introduced the series with a conversation between Miroslav Volf and experimental psychologist Justin Barrett. Justin evokes the image of erecting a giant cathedral of theology—and how the task must be done with a variety of tools and subcontracted skills.Well, whether theology is the grand architect of a cathedral of human knowledge or the benevolent and humble Queen of the Sciences—either way we hope this series highlights the prospects of a science-engaged theology and how it might contribute to the most pressing matters for how to live lives worthy of our humanity. My guest in this episode is Pamela Ebstyne King. She's the Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science at Fuller School of Psychology and is Executive Director of the Thrive Center for Human Development. An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, her research has focused on the intersections of developmental and positive psychology, human thriving, and spirituality. In this episode, we discuss developmental psych as the observational study of human change and plasticity in the midst of a whole complex life; relational attachment for the sake of intimacy and exploration and ultimate purpose or meaning; the proper place of self-love; God's enabling and loving presence as the ultimate secure attachment figure; the importance of learning, gaining skills, and the pursuit of expertise; The prospects of regaining emotional regulation through relationships; the game changing impact of deliberate psychological and spiritual practices to move us well beyond surviving to a life of thriving.About Pamela Ebstyne KingPamela Ebstyne King, Ph.D. joined Fuller Theological Seminary as assistant professor of Marital and Family Studies in 2008, after serving in the School of Psychology for eight years as an adjunct and research professor. With automation technology gaining popularity, DeGeest is committed to staying relevant and competitive. Host of DeGeest's Manufacturing a Stronger Standard, Derek DeGeest, sat down with Brad Ruppert, DeGeest's applications specialist and engineering manager, to discuss the new robotic solution they created for the wheel refinishing industry.Ruppert, who just recently returned from a recent install, visits customers in person and performs the installation, software coding, and training. During the most recent training, Ruppert had the applicators run through installation for five different styles of rims for a total of 80 rims during an eight-hour session, beating their throughput on a normal day. This sort of hands-on, results-oriented training gives employees confidence in the tech and leaves them feeling extremely satisfied — and more importantly, “bought-in” — with the upgrades. The biggest difference in this product's development, when compared to others, is that DeGeest couldn't add the robot to the existing system due to the manual, laborious nature of the process. Instead, Ruppert detailed how the team tackled creating this customized system, which included: Learning the rim application processDetermining the amount of time it took to manually complete the serviceNoting the structural inhibitors of the buildingBuilding the robot system based on all of the above factorsFor this customer in particular, DeGeest was able to complete their planning process, build the robot, and train the staff within only five days. Now, the shop is running “199 rims in a 10-hour workday with two people.”In an industry that usually requires working through weekends and holidays, this type of technology is a game changer, improving the work environment in many ways, such as increased work-life balance, decreased turnover, and higher throughput.Interested in learning more?
