With the recent visit with a real-deal 1950 Broadcaster, I had the chance to experience the unique tonal options that Leo Fender's original blend control offered over your run-off-the-mill tone control. The only problem, was that awful #1 position, that put a suffocating blanket over the neck pickup. I started searching for a modified wiring scheme, and I found my episode from a couple of years ago with Rick Holmstrom, Mavis Staples' guitarist and bandleader. In it, he described his modified Broadcaster blend wiring that made the first position just a slightly lower volume, and slightly darkened neck pickup sound in position 1. I tried it, and loved it, and am sharing it with you now. I also share 2 YouTube Channels I have been enjoying, Adam Levy's, and Shane Theriot's.https://www.youtube.com/@AdamLevyGuitarhttps://www.youtube.com/user/TheRiotguitarInfo on the wiring:https://www.askzac.com/post/rick-holmstrom-mavis-staples-my-birthday-trip-to-new-orleans-ask-zac-162Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar: https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/Support the show

Welcome to Episode 003 of the Glitter and Sage podcast! In this episode, I hang out with world percussionist Arjun Bruggeman and his sweet dog Mooji at The Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. Arjun had just finished playing tabla with Grammy nominated artist Krishna Das at the Kirtan workshop Ecstatic Chant. As Arjun and I throw Mooji his bunny toy, we have an inspiring conversation. In this episode: INTRO -I share about how I met Arjun at the retreat center I was living/working at -I give an update on Arjun's offerings since we recorded the interview over a year ago, including upcoming album releases and virtual percussion lessons INTERVIEW -Arjun explains Kirtan music -He shares about his Guru, Siddhi Ma, and his time in India -Arjun talks about touring in a punk rock band at the age of 14 -We both talk about our connections to our animals, and Arjun shares how Mooji came into his life -Arjun talks about importance of having a morning practice and the experience of spaciousness -He shares about his improvisational music -Mooji sings for us and inspires a new musical project -Arjun plays for us on the bendir frame drum ARTIST BIO “Arjun Bruggeman, world percussionist, drummer, composer and session recording artist, is highly acclaimed for his unique hybrid of East-meets-West rhythms. At the age of 9 Arjun started playing guitar, bass and drums. By the age of 14 he embarked on a touring career playing drums with punk rock bands. His interest in early progressive, metal and jazz rhythms led him into a creative journey and later found himself enthralled by world percussion. Simultaneously, Arjun practiced many forms of Eastern spirituality. Through these explorations he merged the inner quest with the exterior expressions of sound and found himself supporting spoken word with Coleman Barks and David Darling. Arjun recalls, “I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to support something that was bigger than me.” This profound experience led Arjun to meet Krishna Das and a connection with Neem Karoli Baba. Soon thereafter he began touring with Krishna Das worldwide and over the past decade has shared the stage with noted musicians Sting, John Densmore, Mark Egan, Jerry Morrata, Steve Gorn, Jackson Browne and David Crosby and Graham Nash. In 2016, Arjun released his self-titled debut album Arjun. The six-track album features all original compositions exploring the musical journey of the soul. In June 2019 Arjun has released his follow-up offering of world percussion centered on improvisation and other worldly soundscapes with friends Mark Egan, Shane Theriot and David Darling called Otherworld. Additionally, he has partnered with renowned jazz artist Mark Egan, the duo's album "Dreaming Spirits" was released in 2018 in which he was rated #3 for best percussionist for that year by Jazz Station LA.” RESOURCES: My Instagram: @glitter.and.sage Arjun Instagram: @arjun108b Website: https://www.arjunbruggeman.com/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2nIOY5jfkuhF4f6aYiQrjP?si=Q-GiaoxWR_CXwo06zrrKeg His dog Mooji's Instagram: @moojipupmania Krishna Das Instagram: @krishnadasmusic My favorite Ravi Shankar video at Monterey Pop: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lk60ObnbIOk Glitter and Sage podcast sound engineer/video editing: David Atwood Instagram: @mratwoodmusic https://open.spotify.com/artist/4vSKrFQnV2MfsilThMT9Tc?si=gPCRB7E4QQWTqke-37K4TA Intro/Outro Music: “Drishti” by Cosmal Instagram: @cosmal.live https://cosmal.bandcamp.com/ Thanks for tuning in and joining our conversation, next week's episode features an interview with musician/songwriter Adam Fichtelberg. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Dillon over Zoom video! Mike Dillon has spent the last three decades performing well over 200 shows a year with both his own band, as well as playing vibraphone and percussion with artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020 forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. Recently relocating to Kansas City after spending 15 years in New Orleans, Dillon and producer Chad Meise would track a trilogy of albums: 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918.' In collaboration with his longtime record label Royal Potato Family, they would offer the records exclusively via Bandcamp just days after they were mixed and mastered. In 2021, those albums now receive the full vinyl treatment, as well as complete digital release across all streaming outlets. The first of the three records, 'Shoot The Moon,' is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as "Punkadelic-Funk-Psych" focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States. Assembling an assortment of stylistically uncompromising musicians to contribute, its line-up features Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath among others. Highlights include the apocalyptic road warrior anthem "Drivin' Down The Road," a swirling New Orleans jazz-raga "Further Adventures in Misadventures" and the snarling punk rock diatribe "Quool Aid Man" with its indictment of the American right: "old men and their guns."The second recording in the series, 'Suitcase Man' is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. It's a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals by Tiff Lamson of Givers and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle. Songs like "Empty Bones," "Turkish Rose" and "Matthew" represent Dillon at his most creatively daring, while confirming his ascent into the upper echelon of cult music outsiders in the lineage of artists like Tom Waits, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart.Dillon completes the trilogy with '1918.' The focal point here are Dillon's instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of "Pinocchio," (listen/share) the electro analog trance of "Pelagic" and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Dillon once again calls on friends like drummer Earl Harvin and guitarist Shane Theriot to assist. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. "The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater," explains Dillon.A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Dillon got his start as a sideman, playing in such varied projects as MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo and Secret Chiefs 3. He's also served as an integral member of bands like Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Nolatet, while leading Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX and Malachy Papers. Under his own name, he's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. All Music called his most recent release 'Rosewood,' recorded prior to the 2020 pandemic lockdown, "a hypnotic album that pulls you deep inside a percussive, sylvan-toned dreamscape." Touring relentlessly, Dillon has built one of the most loyal fanbases on the underground music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Umphrey's McGee and Dean Ween GroupWe want to hear from you! My guest today is Mr. Jon Herington. Currently the guitarist for Steely Dan, Jon has long been one of NYC's top tier musicians and first call cats. His resume boasts many credits, (including Boz Scaggs, Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, Bette Midler, Madeleine Peyroux and many others,) but the mainstay of his workload is the coveted guitar chair with Steely Dan, a gig he has held since 1999. As you'll hear, Jon and I have been friends for a while and it was great to catch up and have some laughs. You may say “wow if someone had to go in and sub for Jon those would be some huge shoes to fill” and yes you would be correct 'cause I've had to do it!- not just once, but twice. Jon was gracious enough back in 2007 or 2008 (can't remember) to recommend me for the Boz Scaggs gig while he was out with Steely Dan and then also to Madeleine Peyroux. I kept both those chairs "warm" for a quite a few years while he moved in and out of Steely Dan tours which resulted quite a bit of work for me for 3-4 years. In this little hang I ask Jon about his early years, Jack McDuff, what his first break was in NYC, his first solo record- The Complete Rhyming Dictionary, (now retitled "Pulse and Cadence", Broadway gigs, how he landed the gig with Steely Dan, what it's like to play with those guys and much more. He also shows me his approach to soloing over the quick chord changes to the classic tune Black Friday and we jam on the tune. We also talk about his current Jon Herington Band and his new transcription of chord melodies. Lot's of nuggets of career advice in this one for you younger musicians! Recorded at Swing House Studios in Los Angeles, this episode features an interview and jam with Grammy-winning guitarist/producer SHANE THERIOT. Currently the lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock-soul hitmakers Hall and Oates, Shane has also worked with everyone from Jewel and Willie Nelson to LeAnn Rimes and the Neville Brothers. Shane's "other" job is being musical director for Daryl Hall on Daryl's popular music show, "Live From Daryl's House," wherein Daryl, Shane, and the band perform sets with a wide cross-section of famous singers. A soulful soloist and a super funky rhythm player, Shane has a rare versatility that should continue to land him huge gigs for many years to come. From what it's like growing up in New Orleans to sharing the guitar approaches he used on his new album, Still Motion, Shane covers a lot of territory on this interview, and I thank him for that. I offer Additional thanks to Swing House Studio's Phil Jauriqui (who visits the mics near the end of the episode to talk a little shop as well). His generosity made this episode happen. — JUDE GOLD, host, No Guitar Is Safe podcast.
My guest today is Mark Egan. Mark is a world renowned bassist, composer and bandleader who has recorded and performed with many of the greats in the world of music. He was an original member of the Pat Metheny group, the first incarnation of the band which produced such classic records as American Garage. Mark has also recorded many of his own projects and solo records; perhaps the best known of these being the band Elements, with drummer Danny Gottlieb, with whom he shares a close musical relationship with to this day. In this interview Mark tells me about his early days at the University of Miami, the transition from trumpet to bass, studying and playing with Jaco Pastorius, getting his first fretless bass from Jaco, his early gigs in NY, joining the Pat Metheny group, David Sanborn and many others. I also ask him about his gigs with Sting, Gil Evans, Duran Duran, and get this- Bill Cosby- (he actually made a great record called Where you Lay Your Head- check it out!). We also do a few total improv jams and you get to hear Mark's flowing fretless lines that have graced so many recordings. I had the pleasure of recording with Mark for an upcoming project a few months ago and it was great fun. He's worked with a who's who in the world of guitar- Metheny, Pat Martino, Scofield, John Abercrombie, John McLaughlin, and the list keeps going…. Anyway, I took the train up from Manhattan to Mark's studio in Connecticut, and missed the connection…oops! Not to worry, I finally get to Mark's beautiful home and studio and we are off and running. It's my pleasure to bring you this episode of the Riff Raff with one of the world's greatest bassists, Mark Egan. Hope you enjoy! (Interview recorded June 2017 at Mark's studio in CT.) My guest today is Mr. Zachary Richard. Songwriter, performer, poet, activist. Zachary is like a "Cajun- renaissance" man, who has never ceased promoting and educating others about the French identity of South Louisiana and his Cajun heritage. Beginning his career in the early 1970's up to now- with almost 25 albums to his name, Grammy nominations, 3 volumes of poetry and even children's books, he remains a prolific and passionate artist. (And as you'll hear Zachary has had some great guitarists and musicians in his bands, among them Sonny Landreth and Bill Dillon.) As you'll hear in this interview, Zachary is also a very soulful singer, and puts his heart into all his lyrics and song ideas. In this episode, Zachary discusses songwriting, his Cajun heritage, guitars, and we also play a few songs together. This episode of the Riff Raff was recorded in the front parlor of my home in New Orleans, LA on a beautiful day on June 4, 2017. Hey everyone, welcome to my new podcast- The Riff-Raff with Shane Theriot. The Riff -Raff started as an idea I had a few years ago just to sit and chat with my friends whom I consider to be inspirational to me in some way- whether it be as a musician, artist or whatever the case may be…. over the years as a working musician I've been lucky to work with many amazing people and musicians and would like to share some of their stories with you. Who am I? I'm a professional musician. I like stories…. Luckily I get to work with some of the best in the business and they happen to have great stories. Anyway, I wanted to put these little anecdotes and insights into a format for people to enjoy…it's fun. (Some people like to garden, or take photos, or collect magnets for the fridge..etc..)…Me? I like to get these stories down for all to enjoy! So this is a podcast about the creative process and yes, being a guitar player we do occasionally talk shop, gear etc…but I'm not going to limit it to that as I get this thing going. Oh yeah,,, and we jam a bit too! I've got some other great musicians coming up in the next month or so…John Scofield, Mike Stern, George Porter Jr. (from the Meters) and Johnny Vidacovich, Leni Stern and many others......so if you like this one- much more to come!! FIRST UP ON THE LIST- Mr. John Oates I decided to get The Riff-Raff off the ground right where I stood at that moment… which was on the road with Daryl Hall and John Oates- John Oates as you probably know already if you are listening to this…..is one half of the legendary duo Daryl Hall and John Oates- the biggest selling pop duo in history and a recent rock and roll hall of famer. He's done way more interviews in his life than I can imagine so he's a natural at it -and really easy to talk to. John is a great guitar player, something that I feel he doesn't get enough credit for… I met John after I got a call to play on his solo record Good Road to Follow which I strongly suggest you check out. I was also lucky enough to get to work on his live DVD called Another Good Road that you may have seen on Palladia or VH1- which is a really great showcase of John's songwriting and guitar playing abilities…. John is one of the good guys in the music biz and has become a close friend in the past 2 years. this interview took place inside John's room at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem PA. In it we talk Hall and Oates, inspiration, how he comes up with song ideas, guitars, pedals and some great stories from the road (wait til you hear about the giant star!) and yes, we even jam on a little ditty called Maneater. It's my first interview and I hope you enjoy it- Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Many guitarists know how to play barre chords, yet few tap into all of the magic a 1st-finger barre can offer. Great players often use the 1st finger like a mobile capo, holding down two or more strings while the other three fingers create riffs and chords. Shane Theriot teaches you Star Barre examples from Keith Richards, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Allan Holdsworth.
