A curious theme, indeed! We're talking ‘questions', naturally. And don't you think it's time we got around to this theme? There was no shortage of ammunition…songs that end with that curly-que that has been the topic of many theories. One such theory suggests that it originate from the Latin word “quaestio” which, shortened to “qo”, would evolve into the symbol we recognize today. Each and every track in the show today delivers that terminating mark in search of an answer. We've heard of answer songs, but what about these question songs and most demand good answers because, well, they're good questions. Jazz, country, rock ‘n roll, and everything in between with selections from The Lovin' Spoonful, Dan Hicks, The Robins, Joe Liggins and Bo Diddley are just a sampling of the nearly three dozen songs with “good questions” theme. Where would we be without music? Don' have that answer but I'm guessing I don't want to know.
During his lifetime, the late artist Frank Auerbach never had an exhibition in Berlin, the city of his birth, which he left for the UK in 1939 to escape the Nazis. This weekend, the first show of his work in the German capital opens at the Galerie Michael Werner. Our digital editor, Alexander Morrison, went to Berlin to talk to the artist's son, the filmmaker Jake Auerbach, about the exhibition. A new book by Dan Hicks, a curator at the Pitts River Museum in Oxford, UK, titled Every Monument Must Fall explores the origins of the fierce contemporary debates around colonialism, art, and heritage. It investigates in particular the acquisition of human remains and their ongoing place in museums and other historical institutions. Ben Luke spoke to him about the publication. And this week's Work of the Week is Republic (1995) by Ian Hamilton Finlay, whose centenary is being celebrated this year with a new publication and a series of exhibitions in London, Edinburgh, Palma de Mallorca, Brescia, New York, Hamburg, Basel and Vienna. Spring is knock-knock-knocking…and our Supreme Court is push-push-pushing back on the idea of Emperor Grandpa McFuddlepants. And why not? They created it. But here, we're busy painting the town with hope and there's a sense that there's something in the air as this week's show leans on the fabric of Americana sounds to get us through yet another week of hate speech from Pennsylvania Avenue. We'll apply an salve of sweet sounds from Jerry Garcia, Jackie Wilson, Townes Van Zandt, Billie Holiday, and that late local luminary and bard about town Dan Hicks in this week's show. It's a free form dance we're taking on so I hope you make time or, if you can't catch us live on KOWS, you can catch up on our archives posted on Podomatic at https://deeperroots.podomatic.com

Today's Rapid Fire topics include: * We hear and discuss comments from Marcus Freeman on what he sees for Riley Leonard this season. * On a scale of 1 to 10, what are the chances an Irish quarterback not named Riley Leonard plays against Purdue this week? * Thoughts on a post on Twitter/X by ESPN's Dan Orlovsky on Irish freshman quarterback CJ Carr. * Fill-in the blank...Texas got a big road win at Michigan last weekend. It's BLANK that Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkesian warned his team not to fall into a “Notre Dame scenario” this week when they host UT San Antonio. * Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price combined for 15 carries last week vs NIU. What's the minimum number of combined carries those two should have in a game? * A listener asks if we would rather Notre Dame win 10 games with Riley Leonard this season and then start over with a new quarterback next year or win eight games with freshman CJ Carr to build off his experience going into next season. * With all the drama after the Irish loss, we haven't had a chance to talk about new NBC play by play announcer Dan Hicks calling the game. #elviscostello #lindaronstadt #bozscaggs #bonnieraitt #nicklowe Austin de Lone is an American keyboardist who records and tours with his own bands as well as with other artists, such as Bill Kirchen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Nick Lowe, Commander Cody, and Loudon Wainwright. De Lone grew up in suburban Philadelphia, taking piano lessons at age 12. His early influences included Ray Charles and George Shearing. After stints as a student at the New England Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, and University of California, Berkeley, he moved to Greenwich Village.[3] While at Harvard, de Lone composed the song "One for One," which was the first single released by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. Eggs over Easy In 1969, de Lone formed the band Eggs over Easy with Jack O'Hara and Brien Hopkins.[4] In 1970, Chas Chandler persuaded the band to record in London, but those recordings were not released. A four-night-a-week residency at a pub called the Tally-Ho in Kentish Town lasted more than a year. Eggs over Easy played a blend of blues, country, and rock that became known as pub rock. Regular attendees of their shows included members of Brinsley Schwarz and BBC disc jockey John Peel. In 1972, they returned to California and released their first album Good 'N' Cheap produced by Link Wray. The Moonlighters De Lone moved to Marin, California in 1972, where he met Bill Kirchen, who had been performing with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. In the late 70s, de Lone joined Kirchen's side-project band, the Moonlighters. Their 1983 album Rush Hour was produced by Nick Lowe. Both de Lone and Kirchen later worked with Lowe and Elvis Costello. De Lone and Kirchen still record and perform together. In 2016, they released their duet album Transatlantica. The Christmas Jug Band De Lone is a member of the Christmas Jug Band, a collection of musicians who have been touring locally each holiday season since 1976, and releasing albums since 1987. The band has included musicians such as Dan Hicks, Tim Eschliman, Jim Rothermel, Lance Dickerson, Brien Hopkins, and Norton Buffalo. Richard de Lone Special Housing Project De Lone coordinates an annual fundraiser for eventual construction of the Richard de Lone Special Housing Project, a residential facility for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome, which de Lone's son Richard is afflicted with. As part of the 2007 event, Elvis Costello reunited with Clover, the band who backed him on his first album My Aim is True.

The HPS Podcast - Conversations from History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science
In today's episode we have assistant professor and philosopher of science, Dan Hicks, taking us through better understanding public scientific controversies.‘Public scientific controversies' is a term Dan uses to capture a broad variety of controversies that involve both science and the public. This would include controversies around vaccines, genetically modified foods, medical research and climate change. In studying why controversies like these arise and persist, Dan has found our common explanations are not always fit for purpose. Controversies aren't all of one type, so a blanket diagnosis like, "it is all due to the public not properly understanding the science" or alternatively "the problem is widespread distrust of science," is not helpful.Instead, Dan argues that what is required is more careful consideration of the specific processes and mechanisms at play in each case. Better diagnoses can then help us better determine appropriate and effective interventions.Relevant links for Dan:Profile - Dan Hicks - AboutResearch - Dan Hicks - ResearchDiscussion - Dan Hicks - philosophy of science, data science, environmental policyRelevant Article - Dan Hicks - Misinformation and trustworthiness: Frenemies in the analysis of public scientific controversiesOther links related to the episode:The Dialectical Biologist | Levins & Lewontin'Sheepfarming after Chernobyl' | Brian WynneImpure Science: AIDS, Activism and the Politics of Knowledge | Steven EpsteinMerchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Climate Change | Naomi Oreskes & Erik Conway'The Green New Deal is already changing the terms of the climate action debate' (theconversation.com)The transcript for this episode can be found at: https://www.hpsunimelb.org/post/s3-ep4-dan-hicks-transcriptThanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. On Episode 56 Martin Bradley, an archivist and recently qualified barrister, talks about cultural heritage and the repatriation of cultural artefacts. But first our hosts, Peter Leonard BL and Mark Tottenham BL, asked Martin what made him turn his back on the GLAM sector. The GLAM sector? Listen to find out all about it as well as what the rights and wrongs of ownership of historical artefacts by both public bodies, museums (including Limerick's Hunt Museum) and private persons are. Expect the unexpected as Angelina Jolie also makes a cameo appearance. And for Martin's cultural recommendation is a book, 'The Brutish Museum' by Dan Hicks, Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford. And, as usual, our dynamic duo bring us three current cases from the Decisis.ie websiteThe first concerns an appeal about a blocked drains issue from the Residential Tenancy Board and is curious in that the quantum being sought was €88,000 but that €20,000 is the maximum permissible payout. The 2nd case is a criminal case involving the murder of a woman returning from her place of work and the admissibility of what is termed a 'dying declaration'.The third case concerns the refusal by An Garda Síochána to grant a license for a specific type of gun to a citizen and involves the concept of 'fettering their discretion'. We get into Sam Raimi's filmography and stylistic hallmarks (including the weirdness of his Spider-Man trilogy), the unfulfilled career of Bruce Campbell, and Austin's newfound love for horror films.
