Pat Mire, who founded Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival in 2006, joins Discover Lafayette, along with his wife, Rebecca Hudsmith, to discuss his career as a filmmaker celebrated for his authentic portrayals of Cajun culture. Since his early days as a filmmaker, Pat has been able to make a living solely by directing and producing films which resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and of various cultures. Cinema on the Bayou Festival was created in 2006 by chance, after the devastating damage wreaked by Hurricane Katrina upon New Orleans. "The National Film Board of Canada called me saying there was a US premiere of the documentary "Maroon," by famed Quebecois filmmaker Andre Gladu that was supposed to be playing at the New Orleans Film Festival. I was living in uptown New Orleans and we all had to leave. There was nobody living in New Orleans at that time in 2006.. And so I came here to Lafayette. There was no New Orleans. It was an opportunity. I decided we were going to pay for his hotel, fly him here, and pay a stipend. I said, I'm starting a film festival. That's how it started. I've worked with all the scholars here, including Barry Ancelet and Carl Brasseaux, to preserve our local culture." Since 2006, Cinema on the Bayou has presented hundreds of internationally acclaimed documentary, narrative fiction, animated and experimental films, with filmmakers in attendance from across the United States and around the world. The Festival is now unique among film festivals in the U.S. in that it also regularly screens a large number of French-language independent films and presents filmmakers from throughout the Francophone world. Pointe Noire, a film the couple co-wrote and produced together, will premier on January 22, 2025, at the St. Landry Cinema in Opelousas as a feature film of the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival. Local talent, Andrew Morgan Smith, a veteran composer from Youngsville, was the composer for the movie's score. Cinema On the Bayou runs from Jan. 22 - 29, 2025. For Pointe Noire's premiere on Jan. 22, doors will open at 6 p.m. at St. Landry Cinema, 1234 Heather Dr., Opelousas, with a Red Carpet wine reception. The film will screen at 7 p.m. Following the film screening and Q&A, the after-screening reception for all attendees will be held at Cite des Arts, 109 Vine St., Lafayette. There will be a cash bar along with complimentary boudin and king cake. Tickets for the opening night film screening and reception are $20 per person and cna be purchased in advance at www.cinemaonthebayou.com. All-Access passes for the festival can be purchased at: https://cinemaonthebayou2025.eventive.org/passes/buy Pointe Noire, shot throughout the Acadiana area, stars Canadian film stars Roy Dupuis and Myriam Cyr, and features Michael Bienvenu and Zachary Richard. It tells the story of filmmaker and crawfisherman Louis Leger (Roy Dupuis) and criminal defense attorney Dolores Arceneaux (Myriam Cyr), who join forces in the Cajun prairie community of Pointe Noire in an effort to save the life of Joel Richard (Michael Bienvenu), a falsely accused man on Louisiana's Death Row. What follows is a search to find out what really happened 30 years ago when two people were killed on the night of the traditional courir de Mardi Gras. Along the way, Louis and Dolores uncover a hauntingly beautiful, isolated community suffering from secrecy and deceit, yet ultimately striving to achieve its own form of folk justice. Pat's documentaries have been broadcast nationally on PBS, the Discovery Channel, and many more platforms, and have earned prestigious awards including the American Anthropological Film Festival's Award of Excellence. "A film is told three ways. There are three films in one film. It's what you write, what you shoot and what you edit... post production That's, to me, the lace and embellishment. The negligee you put on the film at the end is so important." His first film, Dirty Rice,

Multiple award-winning Acadian country music star Laurie LeBlanc joins hosts Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji on the show! 2019 was a banner year for LeBlanc. Recipient of the Male Country Artist of the Year 2019 at the Josie Music Awards in Tennessee, Laurie LeBlanc also participated in a dance and country music congress organized by the Francophone Federation of Country Dance and Line Dance FFCLD in Issoudun, France. This experience proved to be important in his career when he met Irish singer-songwriter Don Mescall, who later offered him several songs. From there was born his first English-language album of original compositions, When It's Right It's Right , which was released in 2020. Produced by emeritus Jason Barry (Dean Brody, Charlie Major, Terri Clark, Jason Blaine), this album undoubtedly marked a turning point in his career. In 2022, Laurie launches his 8th solo recording "Long Weekend", a double EP of original songs in French and English, a real turning point in his career. Over the years, Laurie LeBlanc has performed on stage across Canada and shared the stage with many established artists, including Zachary Richard, Michel Pagliaro, Renée Martel, Patrick Norman, Guylaine Tanguay, Laurence Jalbert, Paul Piché , Marc Hervieux, etc. These beautiful musical and personal encounters have greatly contributed to him: they have shaped the artist and the human being that he is today.

Barry Ancelet, acclaimed Cajun folklorist, author, and songwriter, as well as the founder of Festivals Acadiens et Creoles, joined Discover Lafayette to share his love of our culture and his journey as a folklorist. We look forward to celebrating the Festival on Friday, March 18, 2022, after a hiatus due to the COVID shutdown. Barry served on the faculty of UL-Lafayette from 1977 until his retirement in 2016. He was a professor in the Department of Modern Languages, serving as chair of the department and as the first director of the University's Center for Acadian and Creole Folklore. He developed and taught the first course on Cajun and Creole music at the university. He has been involved in over 50 record projects, providing notes, transcriptions and translations, and has written almost two dozen books on Cajun music and culture. "My dad told me when I was a kid, 'Find something you really love to do and you'll never work a day in your life.' I got paid to visit with artists like Dewey Balfa, Dennis Magee, Canray Fontenot, and Nathan Abshire, listen to their stories and turn it into coursework and publications. When I retired, in my speech I said I was happy to be retiring before the university realized I would have done it for free." It wasn't that long ago in Louisiana that speaking French was shunned and children were not allowed to speak the language in school for fear of reprisal. However, Barry says that he grew up in a French-speaking family who enjoyed Cajun music, and, "we never felt French was a liability." His grandmother always quoted a French proverb, "A man who speaks two languages is worth two men," translated in French as "Un home qui parle deux langues vaut deux hommes." Barry excelled early in his French studies and loved it. At Cathedral Carmel High School, he represented the school at the Literary Rally, winning a medal. "It was like getting paid to eat candy." Majoring in French at USL (now UL-Lafayette), he went on to study French at Indiana University where he realized his love of French was grounded in our local French-Acadian culture, not strictly traditional French history. The pre-eminent American folklorist, Henry Glassie, was on the faculty at Indiana U. and encouraged Barry to transfer into folklore, to learn about the cultural side of life, and Barry graduated with an MA in folklore from the university. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the same time as Barry's college days, Louisiana French history was beginning to be recognized for its significance. He mentions local historian Carl Brasseaux and musician Zachary Richard as two others also drawn to finding out how the region's culture came about and asking questions such as "Who are we? Why does our music sound this way? Why does gumbo taste like that? Why do our homes look like that?" Out of curiosity, they started digging and learning about the French-Canadian, African-Caribbean, and French influences which shaped the region's unique culture. While studying French in Nice, France in the Spring of 1973, Barry was miserable and homesick. One day while walking in downtown Nice, Barry heard Cajun music floating from a store owned by Roger Mason. Barry wanted to know more about this store that showcased music that he missed, such as the Crowley Two-Step; Mason shared that he had a mentor, Dewey Balfa, who he had learned from, and encouraged Barry to go to Basile, Louisiana to meet Balfa upon his return to the States. Dewey Balfa wasn't just a mentor to Roger Mason, he was an ambassador of Cajun culture and advocated for the revival of traditional Cajun music. In 1964, Balfa had been invited by the renowned music Smithsonian folklorist Ralph Rinzler (along with Gladdie Thibodeaux and Louis Vinesse Lejeune) to play at the Newport Folk Festival where Balfa's music was met with great excitement. He appeared twice more at the Festival and with the warm acceptance of his music,

Let’s go down to Louisiana bayou country. **** Cajun music, a unique style of music associated with Louisiana played, is rooted in the ballads of the French-speaking Acadians of Canada. Cajun music is often mentioned in tandem with the Creole-based zydeco music, both of Acadian origin. These French Louisiana sounds have influenced American popular music for many decades, especially country music, and have influenced pop culture through mass media, such as television commercials. **** From the 60s onward, there has been a Cajun "renaissance”. The Cajun "renaissance" incorporates more modern elements of folk, blues, jazz and swamp pop, and bluegrass styles. Pioneers such as BeauSoleil with Michael Doucet, Zachary Richard, Jambalaya Cajun Band, Bruce Daigrepont broke new ground, while other musicians brought high energy to older, more traditional forms. **** Join the conversation on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 **** or by email at: dannymemorylane@gmail.com **** You’ll hear: 1) Down At The Twist And Shout by Mary Chapin Carpenter w/BeauSoleil 2) El Sid O's Zydeco Boogaloo by Nathan (Williams) & The Zydeco Cha Chas 3) My Nanette by Zachary Richard 4) Give Him Cornbread by Beau Jocque & The Zydeco Hi-Rollers 5) Man Smart (Woman Smarter) by C.J. Jimmy Domengeaux is well-known as a successful Lafayette attorney and member of the iconic Domengeaux family which has served our community well. Jimmy is a graduate of LSU Law School and has practiced law for 33 years at the Domengeaux, Wright, Roy & Edwards law firm. He cherishes his French roots grounded in South Louisiana and shares his story with Jan Swift of Discover Lafayette. When asked to define what makes Acadiana so special, Jimmy recalled a classic Cajun song that sums up the culture: "Travailler c'est trop dur," which translates to "Working is too Hard." The cultural ethic defined in this song captures the hard work endured by the Acadian people, their family values, and the determined adherence to their French heritage. Travailler c’est trop dur (Working is too hard) Working is too hard,And stealing is not pretty,Asking for charityIs something that I cannot do.Each day that I live,They ask me, on what do you survive,I say I live on love,And I hope to live old. I take my fiddle,And I grad the bow,I play my old waltzTo make my friends dance. You know, dear friends,That life is too shortTo live in sorrow,Let us dance tonight. I get my old horseAnd I grab my old saddle. And I saddle my old horseTo go and get my darling. You know, dear,It’s far from one to the otherBut from San Antonio to Beaumont,I was looking just for you. Zachary Richard, Les Editions du Marais Bouleur While at LSU Law School, Jimmy wrote a Louisiana Law Review article in 1986 entitled, “Native Born Acadians and the Equality Ideal”, under the direction of Constitutional Law Professor Paul Baier. The article was based upon a 1980 federal lawsuit heard by U. S. District Judge Edwin Hunter in Lake Charles which decided whether or not French-speaking people, known as "Cajuns" and derogatory derivatives of that name, were protected as a class against employment discrimination under the Civil Rights Act. It became settled law that Acadian descendants were a "protected class" under federal law, and as Judge Hunter said, "You don't have to come from a country, it's your place of origin that decides whether or not you are protected." Jimmy's uncle, also named Jimmy Domengeaux, was the founder of the Domengeaux Wright law firm, as well as the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana ("CODIFIL") which has worked diligently for the past 50 years to preserve the French language in Louisiana as well as to garner pride and respect for all people who descended from the Acadians deported from Acadie in Nova Scotia in 1755. CODIFIL was established during the time John McKeithen served as governor, and he well understood the mission of CODIFIL, as did local Acadiana icon Senator Sonny Mouton who shepherded the legislation through the Legislature. Jimmy's father, Jerome Domengeaux, another South Louisiana icon, served as Chief Judge of the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeals and was renowned for his legal acumen. Jimmy's Louisiana roots run deep and his family has always enjoyed the outdoor pursuits offered freely in Louisiana's "Sportsman's Paradise." http://www.jimmydomengeaux.com/ Now, back to our guest! Jimmy Domengeaux grew up enjoying opportunities to fish and hunt in the Atchafalaya Basin and marshes of South Louisiana. He always" felt a great connection with the serenity of the Atchafalaya Swamp" and particularly loved bass fishing and competing in fishing tournaments. While he always enjoyed being outdoors and viewing sunrises and sunsets, as Jimmy matured, he felt an obligation to capture the beautiful scenery he had always taken for granted. He picked up a camera, whatever it was, a Canon EOS or the camera on his iPhone. He's never taken a photography class or sought out professional training. Jimmy's legal work through the years has taught him about water issues in the swamp, how oilfield developments have changed the natural flow of the bayous and have choked off the vibrancy of the swamps.

My guest today is Mr. Zachary Richard. Songwriter, performer, poet, activist. Zachary is like a "Cajun- renaissance" man, who has never ceased promoting and educating others about the French identity of South Louisiana and his Cajun heritage. Beginning his career in the early 1970's up to now- with almost 25 albums to his name, Grammy nominations, 3 volumes of poetry and even children's books, he remains a prolific and passionate artist. (And as you'll hear Zachary has had some great guitarists and musicians in his bands, among them Sonny Landreth and Bill Dillon.) As you'll hear in this interview, Zachary is also a very soulful singer, and puts his heart into all his lyrics and song ideas. In this episode, Zachary discusses songwriting, his Cajun heritage, guitars, and we also play a few songs together. This episode of the Riff Raff was recorded in the front parlor of my home in New Orleans, LA on a beautiful day on June 4, 2017. "People are horrible" is not what you d expect a politician to believe, much less say. But Manny Chevrolet is no ordinary politician. A perennial candidate for Mayor of New Orleans with the slogan "A troubled man for troubled times," Manny is ready to come out swinging next time around, building on his previous trending statistics which have improved every election, all the way up to something like 120 votes last time around. Sindy Scalfi doesn t hate humans but she sure does love animals. She s communed with gorillas in Africa and even though she s put her decades long singing career on the back burner and left her country music boots and hat in Nashville, she sings a song about animals, called "Animals," on this show. Graham Robinson and Daria Dzurik have one of New Orleans most original sounding bands, Daria and the Hip Drops, combining a hip pop sensibility with steel pans, of all instruments. How Daria came to play the pans is even weirder, and you might be surprised how vast and even weirder still is the world of steel pan players, stretching as it does from Pensacola to Trinidad. Graham is a dark horse. When he s not playing with Daria and the band he s an A list bass player, playing with the likes of David Torkanowski and Zachary Richard. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon.
