Brent Mason is an absolute legend in the guitar world. Not only for his chameleon like ability to adapt to any song, but also for his technical precision and speed. He is also one of the most prolific guitarists on the planet having played on basically any 1990s country song that matters, and a whole bunch of songs you never would have expected. On top of all of that, he's a heck of a nice guy and hilarious! You are in for a real treat of an episode! One quick note: This episode was pulled from the other guitar podcast I record, The Chasing Tone Podcast. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 542 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - and this week they have a special guest as the legendary Brent Mason is in the house! This week we are joined by Nashville legend Brent Mason - one of the world's finest guitar players and one of Brian's guitar heroes - and he takes us on a detailed journey through his career. Brent tells us the utterly insane story about how he got his first break in music after being literally thrust at one of the most famous players of his era when he was a youngster. Brent then regales us with colorful tales of his early session playing career, how his talent was picked up, and how some of his early encounters with legendary musicians played out. He gives us a fascinating insight into how hard he had to work to get to his big break and has some great insights for all guitar players to learn from. There is also plentiful gear talk too as Brent breaks down how his rig has evolved from the 90's to today. There are some amusing tales about library music including something that blows Richard and Blake's tiny minds when they discover just how widespread Brent's talents can be found. The guys get deep into Brent's creative process and learn about how he comes up with his solos and Brian makes a confession. Oh, and we might mention the new Wampler ReWired pedal and its topology. Hint - it is not a tubescreamer.  This is an episode not to be missed, and we are very grateful to Brent for spending this time with us - enjoy! Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 541 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Brian plays with a session legend and is this the worst guitar ever?    Richard has got valve problems and Brian and Blake offer up solutions. Brian has been jamming with the legendary Brent Mason and tells us how he managed to hold his nerve. Richard has had a schooling in some country music and Blake has a mysterious incident to deal with. Brian has been thinking about true temperament fretboards and the guys invent the worst guitar possible.Do you think pedal manufacturers are ripping you off? A British YouTuber decided to break down (literally) a JHS fuzz pedal and this in turn lead to a response from Josh Scott which was both educational and a fun pedal industry hangout. Spoiler alert - pedal companies are not ripping you off. A guitar was released this week that raised more eyebrows than a gallon of Botox - with questionable design aesthetics and a very questionable origin. This leads into a conversation about whether or not imported guitars were about to get a whole lot more expensive. Following on from last week's Tone Bender clone, a new Klon Klone has hit the market and it has caused a lot of controversy itself... The British banana, Brian's butler, Country Music Christmas songs, The return of the king, Pedal hinting...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

What is the best speaker for my Deluxe Reverb, is one of the most asked questions of all-time. A friend recently asked me about doing an episode on this topic, and added that I should give it some added weightiness by finding out what all the pros I know use. So I queried Brent Mason, John Leventhal, Tom Bukovac, Duke Levine, Luke McQeary, JD Simo, Guthrie Trapp, Redd Volkaert, Steve Wariner, James Pennebaker, Jeff King, Jerry McPherson, Rob McNelley, Jedd Hughes, Stuie French, Ryan Wariner, Andy Reiss, Derek Wells, and Kenny Vaughan to find out what they prefer in their Deluxe Reverb. I thought we would have a huge variety of speakers, but surprisingly, it really came down to 3-types. Today we compare those 3 varieties, and look at their strengths and weaknesses. We also look at the stock speakers that were shipped with vintage (1963-1967) BF Deluxe Reverb amps, and why most players don't use them.Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch  - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/#askzac #deluxereverb #zacchildsSupport the show

Rhett and Zach are joined on this Dipped In Tone by country and bluegrass aficionado Andy Wood. Wood grew up in Knoxville with Appalachian bluegrass musics shaping his view of the world, and even though he's celebrated for his guitar playing, he reveals that he didn't pick up an electric until he was 17.Mandolin was his home turf, where lightning-quick alternate picking was the norm rather than a shredding strategy—there's no “nuclear arms race of chops” in bluegrass, Wood reveals. The real key to playing fast? Simply learning songs. Because of the different approaches, Wood shares how to spot an electric guitar player who started on bluegrass. Wondering where to start with American roots music? Wood has you covered there, too. When he finally got around to guitar, Wood studied the playing of Nashville session weapons like Brent Mason alongside players like John Petrucci. Now, Wood throws an annual four-day retreat for guitar players called the Woodshed Guitar Experience, where you can learn from some of music's greatest modern players.Plus, learn about how Andy catches great electric tones in the studio, and stayed tuned for his new solo record, Charisma, which dropped on August 9.Check out Andy's new album: https://www.andywoodmusic.com/Get 10% off your order at http://stewmac.com/dippedintoneSubscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/

Brent Mason has picked for the biggest and best names in country music: Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn, Blake Shelton, and George Strait are just a few of the country stars on whose records you can hear Mason's Fender-on-Fender fretwork. But his solo on “Southbound Train,” the closing track on Travis Tritt's 2000 record Down the Road I Go, might be his hottest work of all. As Mason explains, the song scoots along at his favorite country tempo—a Cajun two-step, Mason says—which provides the rhythmic framework for his face-melter lead. Mason says the melodic and structural components came in part from his familiarity with jazz, and the mixing of jazz and blues with his usual twangy conventions. In fact, Mason's furious note barrages occasionally earned him some raised eyebrows (and some choice words from Conway Twitty) in the more traditionalist Nashville studio system. This might be the toughest solo our host has taken on so far on Shred With Shifty. The key to wrestling it? “You gotta keep playing [it] til you wanna pull out all your teeth and hair,” says Mason. Which Nashville producers and stars would let Mason off-leash in the studio? How does a session ace deal with hand injuries? Listen on, shredders. And if you're brave enough, send in your take on Mason's solo. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Richard makes some bold and outrageous claims about his fuzz pedal credentials having built exactly one pedal ever and has had some help from one of our supporters and tells us all about it before he and Brian have a genius business idea. Yes genius that is what i said. Blake enquires about the density of a key component and Richard has the geekiest thing he has ever owned. Brian has had a long weekend, a veritable blur of guitar activity, and he tells us all about the Woodshed Guitar experience. He hung with some of the finest players and effects minds in the business - and possibly trolled them all - and has an amazingly coincidental story about Brent Mason. It's fair to say a good time was had by all and somewhere out there there is footage of Brian in a hot jam. Brian also got to play the new PRS 'Telecaster' style guitar and he was surprised by his reaction. There has been some controversy in the guitar word related to a well known retailer / youtuber and their involvement with an amp company which the guys were surprised by as they all thought it was common knowledge. The guys look at the serious side but also can't help but see the funny side too. There's also an update on the Van Halen video we discussed last week.   Adjusting trimpots, Indiana snow, Eric Johnson, The Metaverse, Bunking with Greg Koch, Yngwie...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! This episode is sponsored by the fine folk at Pickupmusic.com and Stringjoy.comThanks to all our supporters - you are awesome! We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.com Support the show

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian and Blake come at Richard with some stereotyping and then Richard confesses he has been listening to some country music and some classic American rock. Is this a negative reality inversion? Meanwhile Blake tells us about a recent vacation where he got to play a guitar that needed serious setup. Brian asks about Richard's DIY and immediately regrets at least some of it and we soon discover its now turned into a bonafide addiction and a risk of fire. It's like Brian has opened up a whole new world for Richard as he babbles away about J201s and resistor values.  A video of Van Halen performing in the UK in the 1980s surfaced for about 24 hours and there was an insane Eddie solo that the guys talk about prior to discussing the restoration of another classic rock film. Meanwhile Brian's been to  Nashville to hang out with the legendary Brent Mason and tells us about his preparations for the Andy Wood 'Woodshed Guitar Experience' - which he is definitely excited about.  Blake ruminates about next year's NAMM. Fender have lifted their UK prices which has caused some consternation, and this leads on to some conversation about some new special edition guitars. Blake gives us some logical reasons for Fenders pricing strategy.  Have you ever had much experience with flying with a guitar? How did that work out for you? Brian tells us a tale and the guys chat about different strategies for travelling long distance with your guitar.   Bonnie Raitt, Calming flute music, Symmetrical clipping, Internet wit, Mountain facts, Livestock pricing...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

With help from Brent Mason, Steve Wariner, and Ricky Skaggs, his string benders and 3-pickup Telecaster setups became "must-haves" for anyone wanting to be seen as a serious guitarist in Music City. Today, we look at Joe's recently revamped string bender mechanism, which is now convertible between the B or G string, and his updated middle pickup blend control for 3-pickup Telecasters.Find out more about Glaser's bender, and set up a time for an install. https://www.glaserbender.com/Gear for this video:Will Barton's Birthday Caster Brian Poe 1-piece swamp ash body, MJT finish, Marc Rutter's saddles, bridge, and hardware. Joe Glaser pioneered it in the early 80s with the help of test pilots, Brent Mason, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Wariner. For Mason, it was hot-rodding his 1967 Tele, for Skaggs and Wariner, Joe made the equivalent of formula one racers from the ground up with eye-catching finishes, flame maple necks, the aforementioned middle pickup, and his patented string benders. These were the very first Super Tele's, made to cover a wide variety of tones and get you noticed. Today, we have the rare opportunity to look at a pair of these extremely rare Glaser-built birds and see and hear what makes them so special that they almost never come up for sale.Special thanks to Joe Glaser for his valuable input, and to John Thompson and John Stokes for the use of their Glaser guitars. This leads the guys onto a discussion about a certain green simian themed pedal that has been literally meme'd to death. There has also been a lot of slightly dubious information circulating the interwebs about the circuit design of this particular pedal so Brian breaks it down and gives us a look at what made this pedal different. Brent Mason is being inducted into a very prestigious event and Brian has been asked to pick out his favorite songs and it has caused his brain to melt and provokes Blake and Brian into some very bizarre a capella guitar stylings. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! The saga of Brian's use of Chat GPT to avoid him ever having to communicate with other human beings continues, much to the annoyance of Richard, and the guys look at the issue of who owns the intellectual property to AI generated material.  There was also an interesting article about the state of the music industry and the revenues of each form which the guys take a look at before tackling the recent Superbowl half time show. Richard has learnt something about the production of a classic 1970's song and it blew his mind, but before he tells Brian and Blake about it, he first has to teach Brian about the song.  He also reveals a terrible fact about the band's name before moving on to the gift that keeps giving, the ongoing saga of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters.Marshall are re-releasing a bunch of pedals, including the Bluesbreaker and the Guv'nor, so the guys break down the news and Brian inevitably returns at Chat GPT for answers. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! It seems that a certain British gentleman made a rather unfortunate mistake in the misty haze of the morning after, and he explains his calamitous schoolboy error in a single improvised monologue of utter idiocy. He will never live this down - well not while Brian and Blake draw breath at least. Richard makes up for this slightly by telling us about his Birthday where he decided to go roadtesting a few incredibly expensive guitars at Andertons. Brian confesses that he is pickup stupid and then lets us in to a BIG secret about a guitar he may or may not have on order. Richard has finally bought a guitar, and yes it is that one, it is also one that Brian is disgusted by, and Blake insults his new purchase - or does he? Brian is also thinking about going wireless and talks a bit about his gigging setup and then of course the talk morphs into a bacon based discussion.  Blake's been playing with a new Tube Screamer and he likes it. Yes you read that right, a Tube Screamer that Blake likes. Brian is curious about the unique features of the circuitry and so Blake breaks this down in great detail and Brian goes into a deep dive on tubescreamer circuits...and then we look at the Mike McCready exploding guitar video that one or two of you may have seen...Flute effects, Expensive guitars, Brent Mason, Subliminal ASMR, Tappety Tap sensors, Sausage or Bacon...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show

Zack Dyer! Written by Dyer (Tim McGraw), Morgan Evans ("Kiss Somebody") and Lindsay Rimes (Kane Brown), "Every Beer Every Bar" raises a toast to getting over a relationship. Johnny Day is an American talent whose skillful singing, songwriting, and guitaring has catapulted him into a promising country music career. Born in Kersey, Colo., Day became intrigued by and studied the works of Brad Paisley. In high school, he taught himself how to play guitar like Paisley and even started working in the oilfield as a means of purchasing his own 64' vintage tele and Paisley's custom Dr. Z Wreck amp. Day's artistry was also inspired by the like of Keith Urban, Brent Mason and Shania Twain, all of whom influenced him to pursue music as a career. This pursuit would ultimately lead him to pack his bags and relocate his family to the mecca of country music, Nashville, Tenn., all while continuing to travel back to Colorado to work in the oilfield. His commitment to his family and to his career is made evident in the lyrics and chords of his music. Day is a seasoned entertainer who has performed at numerous premier venues and events across the country including Bluebird Café, Key West Songwriters Festival, and the Rocky Mountain Country music Awards where he was nominated for New Country Artist and Performer of the Year. Day is currently working as an independent artist and is completing his first record produced by The 720 with Jarrod Ingram and Blake Hubbard. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by singer/songwriters Alyssa Trahan and Trey Calloway.  Plus country music artists, Grace Maher, returns to guest cohost!!ALYSSA TRAHANA true jill-of-all-trades, Alyssa Trahan is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (she plays over a dozen), and producer. Growing up in the square mile town of East Rochester, NY, she began writing songs, producing and performing her original music as a young teen before she made the move to Nashville, TN in 2016. Alyssa has an authentically unique style that blends traditional country instrumentation with modern pop production, winning over fans of all genres. Her clever lyrics, impressive musicianship, and smooth vocals transcend across genre lines proving her to be multifaceted and a truly prolific writer. In addition to producing her own music, she has produced tracks for songwriters and artists around the world and earned her degree in Audio Engineering. Known for her energetic and engaging live shows, Trahan has shared the stage with the likes of Maddie & Tae, Randy Houser, Chase Rice, Charlie Daniels, Tanya Tucker, Sara Evans, Josh Turner, Runaway June, and dozens more plus made several festival appearances, including a few headlining spots. Her music has also been featured in many films, commercials, and TV shows including The Jimmy Kimmel Show and The Young and The Restless.    Alyssa has released many artist projects independently and has built quite the following. She has over 250K followers on social media platforms, over 1 million streams and views on streaming platforms and YouTube plus a fast-growing and loyal fan base who named themselves the Trafam. It's no wonder her newest album, “Baby Blues & Stilettos”, debuted in the top ten on the iTunes Country Album Charts and received over 300K first week streams. This would be impressive for any independent artist, but is especially so considering Alyssa produced the album herself during the shutdown of 2020, is a writer on every song, and played over 90% of the instruments on the record. As American Songwriter put it, “It's not that Alyssa Trahan wants to take over country music. Just know that if it ever comes to that, Trahan is a woman who can literally run the show.”TREY CALLOWAY Trey Calloway is a singer-songwriter born and raised in North Carolina. The son of a preacher man, Trey grew up singing in church and was a seasoned performer by the age of 10. Although southern and contemporary gospel were his first musical loves, he was instantly mesmerized by the sounds of country music after hearing a Garth Brooks Greatest Hits album his parents bought for him. A deep understanding and passion for the rocking, boot stomping, country music of artists such as Garth, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and Travis Tritt began to grow within him. Trey began writing songs, playing guitar, and performing in clubs at age 15. He knew early on without a shadow of a doubt that he would make music his career. Trey fronted multiple bands and won numerous awards in North Carolina before moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2016. He formed The Trey Calloway Band and has been playing the eastern circuit and Nashville ever since. Trey recorded and released his debut Nashville album entitled Carolina Man and was able to work with some of his musical heroes including Brent Mason, Lonnie Wilson, and Buddy Hyatt on the Mike Rodgers produced album. Trey wrote all 12 songs on the album, including “Daddy From Day One” inspired by the birth of his son Cash. Trey was nominated as the Carolina Country Music Awards (CCMA) Male Artist of the Year in 2018, and one of the songs from Carolina Man, “Home is Where the Heart Is,” won the CCMA Song of the Year as well as Gospel Song of the Year. The title track to Trey's newest EP “Tire Tracks” is currently nominated for 2022 CCMA Song of the Year.

My guest today is Mr. Johnny Neel. How do you describe Johnny Neel? Well he is easily one on the most brilliant musicians I've ever worked with- keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter, producer etc…  Maybe start with one part Leon Russell, morph together with Ray Charles and add a dash of Thelonius Monk and a pinch of Art Tatum. Maybe a touch of Jaco's basslines too.  Johnny is best known for being a former member of the "Allman Brothers Band" after being recruited by Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman. I've been lucky enough to work with Johnny on lot's of projects as well as in his band and even on a few of his records including "Late Night Breakfast". He's always had great players in his band including guitarists Brent Mason, Jack Pearson and Pat Bergeson.  Johnny and myself were in a short lived jam band for a while called “The Grease Factor”  (named after my 2nd solo record) which also included Jeff Sipe (Apt 254Q) on drums, Count M Butu on percussion and Derek Jones and Neal Fountain on bass. We did one live record before calling it quits. We also did a short stint together with Blue Floyd (with Mat Abts on drums and Berry Oakley Jr. on bass guitar.)  He's featured on 3 of my 4 solo records- (Hwy 90, Dirty Power and The Grease Factor) and you'll hear a few clips in this podcast.  Johnny has also played with Gov't Mule, Blue Floyd, written songs for many country artists and TV/movie soundtracks. He operates his own studio called Straight Up Sound in Nashville, TN.  This episode was recorded in Nashville at his studio on Jan. 30th 2018.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

My guest today is Mr. Jon Herington. Currently the guitarist for Steely Dan, Jon has long been one of NYC's top tier musicians and first call cats. His resume boasts many credits, (including Boz Scaggs, Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, Bette Midler, Madeleine Peyroux and many others,) but the mainstay of his workload is the coveted guitar chair with Steely Dan, a gig he has held since 1999. As you'll hear, Jon and I have been friends for a while and it was great to catch up and have some laughs. You may say “wow if someone had to go in and sub for Jon those would be some huge shoes to fill” and yes you would be correct 'cause I've had to do it!- not just once, but twice. Jon was gracious enough back in 2007 or 2008 (can't remember) to recommend me for the Boz Scaggs gig while he was out with Steely Dan and then also to Madeleine Peyroux. I kept both those chairs "warm" for a quite a few years while he moved in and out of Steely Dan tours which resulted quite a bit of work for me for 3-4 years.  In this little hang I ask Jon about his early years, Jack McDuff, what his first break was in NYC, his first solo record- The Complete Rhyming Dictionary, (now retitled "Pulse and Cadence", Broadway gigs, how he landed the gig with Steely Dan, what it's like to play with those guys and much more. He also shows me his approach to soloing over the quick chord changes to the classic tune Black Friday and we jam on the tune. We also talk about his current Jon Herington Band and his new transcription of chord melodies. Lot's of nuggets of career advice in this one for you younger musicians!                                Recorded SoHo NYC, Aug 2017                                                                                              Brent Mason, Shane Theriot, Jon Herington John's website- http://www.jonherington.com/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
