Solomon Alpert joined me for Episode No. 159. Solomon is a son, a brother, a husband, a father figure, and a Reentry Counselor at Benilde Hall, a facility which helps folks by fostering sustained recovery, stable housing, economic self-sufficiency, and improved mental and physical well-being. An honorable career and facility, to say the least. This week's guest came highly recommended courtesy of his wife, Lisa, who joined me for Episode No. 147 (and is tentatively slated to join me once more, this time for the newest installment of Becoming a Swifty), and he did not disappoint. There's nothing better than a healthy mix of good vibe and qualifiable intelligence.Solomon and I talked about growing up, being first-borns, education, figuring out one's professional self, and a bunch more. We also talked about a few of his favorite albums, which were these:Heaven or Las Vegas (1990), Cocteau TwinsLiz Phair's Exile in Guyville (1993)Chutes Too Narrow (2003), The ShinsToro y Moi's Freaking Out! (2011)If You're Reading This It's Too Late (2015), DrakeCarly Rae Jepsen's Emotion (2015)Many thanks to both Solomon and to everyone that supports the show. This is a look into (mostly) Kansas City folks, who they are, what they're into, and what tunes make them groove.Cheers, y'all.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode. This week on the show, we're so pleased to welcome John Lurie. Perhaps you know him from his work in films like Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Paris Texas, or The Last Temptation of Christ; or maybe you know him better for his music—groups like The Lounge Lizards, his trailblazing avant-garde jazz unit, or his fictional bluesman persona Marvin Pontiac, or the John Lurie National Orchestra. Or maybe you know him from his pioneering and singular television shows, 1991's surreal nature program Fishing With John, or the more recent Painting With John, which ran on HBO from 2021-2023.  This week, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a freewheeling chat, his book, The History of Bones: A Memoir, his Hollywood adventures, and Music From Painting With John, which drops via Royal Potato Family on March 15th. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Keep the servers humming and help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. My, oh, my, we are excited about today's guest, a remarkable musician and guitarist who is about to bless the world with an unbelievably joyful album next week. It's coming out July 14, and it's called Wild & Precious Life. The man of the moment is Duane Betts, and the album is packed with soulful melodies, intricate guitar work, and a raw, heartfelt energy that will take you to the place that great music is supposed to take you. Dare we say, it will tickle you. Son of the legendary Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts, Duane is his own force to be reckoned with in the guitar-based rock and blues scene. After cutting his teeth with the bands Backbone69 and Whitestarr, he spent a decade playing guitar alongside his father as a member of Dickey Betts and Great Southern. He then traveled the world as a touring member of Dawes. But in the last five years, he's been on a tear: He released an EP in 2018 and co-founded The Allman Betts Band, releasing two records in 2019 and 2020. And then, it was finally time for a solo album. Which brings us to Wild & Precious Life, which is being released by our friends at Royal Potato Family. A native of Sarasota, Duane says he wanted to capture “that old school Florida vibe” with this record. Well, he did that and more. Along with a powerhouse of a band - Johnny Stachela on guitar, Berry Duane Oakley on bass, John Ginty on keyboards – all three members of The Allman Betts Band, along with Tyler Greenwell on drums and special guests Marcus King, Nicki Bluhm, and Derek Trucks, Betts has gifted us with 10 scintillating tracks cut live at Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks Swamp Raga Studio in Jacksonville, Florida in 2022.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician trumpeter, slide trumpeter, arranger/composer and bandleader from New York City, Steven Bernstein. Steven is best known for his work in The Lounge Lizards, Sexmob, Spanish Fly, and the Millennial Territory Orchestra. He has released four albums under his own name on John Zorn's Tzadik Records and he has performed with jazz giants including Roswell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Don Byron, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as musicians ranging from Aretha Franklin to Lou Reed, from Linda Ronstadt to Digable Planets, from Sting to Courtney Love. Steven was a member of Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble band, playing in Helm's Woodstock home, as well as touring with the band. As an arranger he has written for Bill Frisell, Rufus Wainwright, and Elton John, just to name a few. He has composed for dance, theater, film and television, and with composer John Lurie, arranged the scores to many feature films, including Get Shorty. While Steven is prolific with his output, this episode centers on two of his projects, Sexmob, which just released a terrific new album called The Hard Way, and The Millennial Territory Orchestra, which recently released four excellent records, in one day, on the Royal Potato Family label. Sexmob's latest release is a bit of a departure for the band, as with producer Scotty Hard at the board, The Hard Way skews decisively electronic. On it, Hard's beats and soundscapes provide Steven, saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and acoustic/electric drummer Kenny Wollesen, all the stimulus they need for further compose and fearlessly reinvent. With each offering, and certainly with The Hard Way and its rich electro-acoustic groove canvas, Steven and crew reveal a modernizing impulse, but also an equally strong foundation in the roots of jazz and American song. Funky, bluesy, with a tattered dissonance conjured up by Krauss Throaty saxophone tone, the distinctive wail of Steven's rare horn, and the swagger of Scherr and Wollesen's rhythm section grind, Sexmob continues to chart new paths in 21st-century creative music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Steven Bernstein talk about Sexmob's new direction sonically found on The Hard Way while exploring the production process behind this captivating work of art. They converse on producer Scott Hard's influence on the album, the unique art house label that The Hard Way was released on called Corbett vs. Dempsey, and the four albums Steven recently released with The Millennial Territory Orchestra. They even discuss Sexmob's forthcoming tour with Laurie Anderson, the many “gifts” Steven received in his career from renowned producer Hal Willner, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. This time, though, I think maybe I'm still processing everything that I learned. In fact, I'm not sure of all that I didn't know before we had our conversation. And trust me -- it was a good one.Among many other topics, we touched on a few of James's favorite records, and they were these:Imperial Bedroom, Elvis Costello & The Attractions (1982)The Clash's London Calling (1979)Mummer, XTC (1983)Quite the collection.I hadn't seen James in the better part of 10 years before we sat down together, so I'm pleased that he agreed to come by for the hang. James is a poster child for the just-be-yourself campaign, and I hope -- be it one day in the cards -- that I can at some point watch him turn out a live set in the comedy scene.Anyway, check out his book and his two albums and his movie over at jamesinman.com.Thank you, James, for being an amazing part of Episode #53.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

Scott Metzger is no stranger to making music, but his latest Too Close to Reason out now on Royal Potato Family, is a bit of a departure from past efforts, not only because it's a solo record, but also too because it's mostly acoustic, relying heavily on his masterful playing built on practice and inspiration by many of the musicians he appreciates.  We're big fans of Scott's various gigs in the Jam Band scene, most notably with Joe Russo's Almost Dead, but other projects too including LaMP, with Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski and several studio gigs around his adopted home of Brooklyn.  Scott is truly a renaissance man, refreshed, healthy and newly married. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with guitarist Scott Metzger, a musician who has spent the past decade earning a reputation as one of the most adventurous improvisers in live music. When he wasn't sharing the stage with the likes of Phil Lesh, John Scofield or Nels Cline, he was playing to massive crowds with Joe Russo's Almost Dead. His musical interests, however, run broader than his bonafides might suggest. During downtime from JRAD Metzger pursued projects like WOLF!, a hard-charging, fully electrified guitar trio that balanced tight compositions with group improvisation, and the Showdown Kids, an acoustic gypsy jazz trio. When the global pandemic darkened stages everywhere, Metzger hunkered down in Brooklyn and did what came naturally — he picked up the guitar every day and wrote instrumental music. Shortly thereafter, he booked time at a Brooklyn recording studio to document the guitar pieces he'd created. The result of those efforts is Too Close to Reason — Metzger's first solo album and the focus of this episode. The 12-track collection, released by Royal Potato Family, showcases a more contemplative side of his musical personality. From the first swelling notes of the atmospheric ”Appropriate Wattage,” the album is full of musical surprises, starting with the fact that Metzger plays nearly every note of this primarily acoustic guitar-based album. The sole exception is “Only Child,” a ballad with Katie Jacoby, violinist for The Who (and Metzger's wife). Too Close To Reason exposes trace elements of Metzger's musical DNA through influences like Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Jim Hall, and Richard Thompson, but it ultimately presents his own fully-formed and distinct voice as a guitarist. In short, his debut reveals an artist in full bloom who has honed his craft and knows himself, contradictions and all. Within this episode host Michael Shields and Scott Metzger discuss the musicians, the guitar, and the pandemic that inspired his new album. They expound upon the fascinating ways in which the first two singles, “Don't Be a Stranger” and “Waltz For Beverly,” came to life while conversing about how special it is that he has had the opportunity to create music with his wife, violinist Katie Jacoby. They even discuss how the artist's recent addiction to running bolstered his capabilities in regard to his performing with Joe Russo's Almost Dead, and so much more. Scott Metzger will celebrate the release of Too Close To Reason with four East Coast performances beginning at the end of March (currently on-sale) in Cambridge, New York City, Washington, DC and Philadelphia. Too Close To Reason is available March 4th, pre-order a 180-gram vinyl here! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Interview with Mike Dillon

Bringin' it Backwards

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Dillon over Zoom video! Mike Dillon has spent the last three decades performing well over 200 shows a year with both his own band, as well as playing vibraphone and percussion with artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020 forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. Recently relocating to Kansas City after spending 15 years in New Orleans, Dillon and producer Chad Meise would track a trilogy of albums: 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918.' In collaboration with his longtime record label Royal Potato Family, they would offer the records exclusively via Bandcamp just days after they were mixed and mastered. In 2021, those albums now receive the full vinyl treatment, as well as complete digital release across all streaming outlets. The first of the three records, 'Shoot The Moon,' is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as "Punkadelic-Funk-Psych" focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States. Assembling an assortment of stylistically uncompromising musicians to contribute, its line-up features Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath among others. Highlights include the apocalyptic road warrior anthem "Drivin' Down The Road," a swirling New Orleans jazz-raga "Further Adventures in Misadventures" and the snarling punk rock diatribe "Quool Aid Man" with its indictment of the American right: "old men and their guns."The second recording in the series, 'Suitcase Man' is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. It's a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals by Tiff Lamson of Givers and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle. Songs like "Empty Bones," "Turkish Rose" and "Matthew" represent Dillon at his most creatively daring, while confirming his ascent into the upper echelon of cult music outsiders in the lineage of artists like Tom Waits, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart.Dillon completes the trilogy with '1918.' The focal point here are Dillon's instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of "Pinocchio," (listen/share) the electro analog trance of "Pelagic" and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Dillon once again calls on friends like drummer Earl Harvin and guitarist Shane Theriot to assist. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. "The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater," explains Dillon.A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Dillon got his start as a sideman, playing in such varied projects as MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo and Secret Chiefs 3. He's also served as an integral member of bands like Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Nolatet, while leading Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX and Malachy Papers. Under his own name, he's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. All Music called his most recent release 'Rosewood,' recorded prior to the 2020 pandemic lockdown, "a hypnotic album that pulls you deep inside a percussive, sylvan-toned dreamscape." Touring relentlessly, Dillon has built one of the most loyal fanbases on the underground music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Umphrey's McGee and Dean Ween GroupWe want to hear from you! Grayson Capps is a storytelling singer-songwriter from L.A. (Lower Alabama), with a wonderfully warm laidback style, that can’t help but be expressed in his songwriting and humorous on-stage banter. He landed on our radar, one morning, in the middle of the Caribbean, on the Cayamo roots music cruise. We were having a late breakfast in the pub while Grayson was in ear shot, on the atrium stage, sharing his stories and songs. His performance was so engaging we had to rush breakfast to catch the rest of the set. After the show, we sat down with Grayson to learn more about his music. Grayson Capps is the son of New Orleans based writer Ronald Everett Capps who wrote the novel “Off Magazine Street”, which was developed into the 2004 Scarlet Johanssen / John Travolta movie, A Love Song For Bobby Long – which was written and directed by Shainee Gabel. Grayson Capps has just released a new compilation of his songs, “South Front Street – A Retrospective 1997 – 2019” (2020, Royal Potato Family). For more information, visit https://graysoncapps.com. Music: Grayson Capps “New Again”, “Bag Of Weed” and “You Can’t Turn Around” from “Scarlett Roses” (2017, Royal Potato Family).

We spend the morning talking with Holly Bowling this week! She took some time out of a well earned break to talk with us about how Ghost Light became a band while hanging out for the very first time, having laser focus inside the jam, being a music nerd, what it means to have some quality down time, climbing the Mt. Everest of transcribing the Tahoe Tweezer jam, and a whole bunch more!Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco-based classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, who infuses jam band music with a technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at SF State University, Bowling has turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation Of A Dream album and the Grateful Dead focused Better Left Unsung (released December 9, 2016 through The Royal Potato Family). Her instantly compelling playing and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling plans to continue to expand her solo touring, and recently formed a new band Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang. For more info on Holly's touring, merch, and music head over to hollybowling.com***THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY THE AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE SHOP TOUR BUS & DEFYNE PREMIUM CANNABIS!!!!SHOP TOUR BUS:Visit shoptourbus.com or @shoptourbus on IG and pick up some wonderfully creative and beautiful Grateful Dead inspired shirts/hoodies. As a band leader and composer he has released 7 records to date and is the owner and co-founder of his own label, the Royal Potato Family. As a collaborator he is notorious in being part of some of the baddest bands from his early days with The Benevento Russo Duo to present times playing keys in Joe Russo's Almost Dead, and holds chairs with Garage A Trois, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, Bustle in your Hedgerow and many others. Nostalgia 77 feat. Josa Peit - Simmerdown (Grant Phabao Remix feat. Marco Benevento) (Free MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) 2011-07-26 Released early 2011, Simmerdown, featuring stunning vocals from Josa Peit, was the first single to be lifted from the latest Nostalgia 77 album, The Sleepwalking Society, released late March 2011. We've been active supporters of Nostalgia 77's measureless talent since day one and some of you might remember the reggae remix our resident producer Grant Phabao did on N77's Seven Nation Army cover with Alice Russell… It was high time to try and rework a new Nostalgia 77 track and we had the chance to get a visit from Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on… This track was hidden in our closet for a year, and when we learned that Nostalgia 77 was coming on play in Paris on February 16th at La Bellevilloise, we offered his label, Tru Thoughts, to put it up for free as a virtual release on Paris DJs. You won't hear this kind of artists combination anywhere else so we hope you'll enjoy the unique groove and spirit in there. And we hope to see you tonite (feb 16) at la Bellevilloise!
