Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he's not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. Joe is also a fan of singer-songwriter Slim Whitman, and he plays guitar, drums, and keyboard. Joe received his PhD in bioinformatics from Boston University. Afterwards, he was awarded a research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergern, Norway. In our interview Joe shares more about his life and science.

On this week's episode of the podcast, we watched Tim Burton's 1996 sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks!, starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Martin Short Pam Grier, Rod Steiger, Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Danny DeVito and Natalie Portman.Mars Attacks! was based off of the 1960s-era trading card series by Topps. In the series, Earth is invaded by cruel, hideous Martians who hope to colonize the planet and enslave its population. In the movie, Earth is invaded by cruel hideous Martians. But they don't seem to want to colonize the planet as much as engage in wanton destruction for its own sake. To the extent that the film has a plot, it follows several groups of people. There is President James Dale, played by Nicholson, his wife and daughter. There is a young donut shop employee and his family in Nevada. There is an aging boxer turned casino employee, his ex-wife and their children. And there are a pair of talk show hosts. The film shows first contact followed by the Martian war on Earth. Most of the characters are either weak and incompetent, like President Dale and the American military, vain and oblivious, like the various members of the media, or outright rubes, like some of the more ordinary people in the film. The Martians rampage across the country, killing everyone they see including the president and the first lady. They are eventually stopped when two characters, the young donut shop employee and his grandmother, discover that the yodeling on Slim Whitman's “Indian Love Call” is enough to cause their heads to explode. They defeat the Martian invasion and are awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their exploits. The taglines for Mars Attacks were “Nice planet. We'll take it!” and “Yikes! They've landed!”Mars Attacks is available for rent or purchase either Amazon or Apple TV.Episodes come out every two weeks so we'll see you then with an episode on Shadow Conspiracy, a 1997 conspiracy thriller directed by George P. Send us a Text Message.YOU'LL PROBABLY BE SURPRISED BY MY STORIES ON THIS EPISODE. HOPE YOU ENJOY FARON YOUNG. ROY DRUSKY, HANK WILLIAMS, SLIM WHITMAN, AND EVEN ROY ROGERS AND , DO YOU REMEMBER FRANK IFIELD? HEY, I'M EVEN IN ON THIS ONE. ENJOY AND PLEASE SHARE.
Send us a Text Message.I'm pretty sure that almost every aspiring country artist has been influenced at some point in their career by the already established stars . Whether your just starting out or theirs a "trend" of a particular sound, we all just try to fit in or, maybe do something a little different to make a difference. It's a lot easier if you have a unique recognizable voice, but on the other hand, it all boils down to the "HIT SONG". My own personal influences have been many. FARON YOUNG and DEL REEVES,,,,, two awesome entertainers . FRANK IFIELD and SLIM WHITMAN had unique ability to crack notes or yodel. Then I also had HANK WILLIAMS and ROY ROGERS. I could go on and on with a long list my friends. I'd appreciate hearing from you regarding your own peersonal inspirations or influence. Those I've just mentioned are only a few that nurtured my love of country music. What's yours?
Musician include: Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Slim Whitman, Hank Williams, Red Foley and Ernest Tubb. Songs include: The Wild side of Life, Salty Dog Rag, Jambalya, It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels and Too Old to Cut the Mustard.
It's been a while since we went free form so today's show takes our regular breather from genre-focused explorations, theme, retrospectives and artist-inspired shows. There will be all of that found in the mix this morning. Interspersed between some fresh sounds from the likes of Dylan LeBlanc, Charley Crockett, and a newly revealed Johnny Cash nugget, we'll be sharing everything from Dave Brubeck to Los Indios Tabajaras, Marvin Rainwater, and Johnny Thunder in our show today. From a pair of Memphis Minnie covers, some country classics from Patsy Cline, swinging rhythm from Louis Jordan, and straight-ahead rock from The Doobie Brothers and The Georgia Satellites…it's a Friday morning full of Duane Eddy tributes and we've even got Slim Whitman…just for you on Sonoma County Community Radio, broadcasting on the FM airwaves out of Occidental, California, and streaming to the whole wide world on kowsfm.com/listen. KOWS-LP 92.5 FM is “Free Speech. No Bull” Community Radio.
Its not always a question of who wrote it. Tdays songs were written and performed by multiple artists like FARON YOUNG, HANK WILLIAMS,and ROY DRUSKY to name a few. But what about SLIM WHITMAN who still holds the record in the UK for longest time in the number one position. They're all her plus Canada's incredible GOOD BROTHERS and TENILLE. It's Sounds Like Radio Volume 134 as we find The Great Gildersleeve suddenly wanted as a friend to Bullard. Why would Bullard suddenly want to be Mr. Nice Guy and friends with Gildy? Hmm, something is up and it just may have something to do with Bullard needing a permit for his boat from the Water Commissioner. Could it be? Nahhh. Well, what we have here is a show concerning what's known as fair-weather friends. And I've invited a whole bunch of fine singers to help Gildy out with this situation. On hand are Don Williams, Lee Wiley (featured in our picture with this show), Bing Crosby, Barbara Mandrell, Slim Whitman, Joanie Sommers & Arthur Godfrey is even going to sing a sea-chanty! We're sailing along on the silvery moon today, ALL ABOARD.

Mars Attacks! is based upon a series of Topps trading cards released in the early 1960s. And it certainly pays homage to its inspiration. Unfortunately, its also a narrative mess that fails to get the most out of its stacked cast. Mars Attacks! features an all-star lineup. It's got Jack Nicholson in two roles, Jim Brown, Joe Don Baker, Annette Bening, Glenn Close, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Pierce Brosnan, just to name a few. And, yes, their presence is felt, but outside of Nicholson, who's terrific as a Las Vegas Huckster and the President, they all have nothing to do. That is the great failing of Mars Attacks! It wants to do a lot without really doing anything at all. It's all just empty spectacle—little green CGI men conquering a hapless earth. Hence why it received middling to negative reviews—56% on Rotten Tomatoes with 86 of them—and was beheaded like an annoying chihuahua at the box office. On a budget of $100 million, Mars Attacks! raked in just north of $101 million worldwide. The losses on that are enough to make a financier's head explode like a martian listening to Slim Whitman. Now, sit back, disintegrate a Double County Double IPA from Dry County Brewing, and do not trust the martians! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are optimistic about still having two out of the three branches of government. That ain't bad! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Nice planet. We'll take it! Born in Sydney in 1937, Kevin Jacobsen began his working life in a chartered accountant's practice. An adept piano player, he devoted all his spare moments to music. In 1957, he and his brother Colin, joined with John Bogle, Lawrie Erwin and Dave Bridge to form the KJ Quintet. After some success changed their name to Col Joye and the Joy Boys, adding younger brother Keith. Almost immediately they scored a booking on Bill McColl's Jazzarama concert in October 1957. After this came an engagement to play at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney as a curtain raiser for the film The Tommy Steele Story, an appearance on TV's Bandstand and a recording contract. While Col Joye went on to become a ‘teen idol' and an enduring pop legend, Kevin left the band and began managing artists and promoting concerts. He and Col set up Col Joye enterprises and their own publishing company. In 1965, with Col and Tony Brady, Jacobsen founded ATA Allstar Artists, which encompassed a record label, a recording studio, event promotion and production, and artist representation. Initially Jacobsen presented local acts – including, of course, Col Joye and the Joy Boys – but before long he began importing overseas attractions. It was to mark this change of direction, that ‘Kevin Jacobsen Productions' was created. He claims that in the 1970s and 1980s he toured more artists than any other Australian promoter. Eventually he started producing theatrical shows and arena spectaculars, frequently working in partnership with other promoters. Among his early successes was a tour by the affable Irish comedian Dave Allen; one of his disasters was The Evil Knievel Thrill Spectacular, whose infamous American daredevil star failed to deliver either thrills or spectacle. In 1987 Jacobsen presented Michael Jackson's first Australian tour. In 1988 he was commissioned by the Queensland Government to mastermind ‘Queensland Day' celebrations in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and by the Federal Government to produce the Royal Bicentennial Concert in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1989 he presented the sell-out concert event Legends of Rock. In 1995 he was the first promoter outside the USA to be invited by the Disney organization to present the stage version of Beauty and the Beast. Its run of two years in Melbourne and 15 months in Sydney grossed $58 million. Also that year he produced the television series Gladiators for the Seven Network. The gross takings for his 1997 presentation of The Three Tenors at the Melbourne Cricket Ground were the largest in Australian history for a single concert – $15 million. In 1999 he presented The Bee Gees – One Night Only, the first live performance at Stadium Australia – the Olympic Stadium. In 2000 Barbra Streisand's four stadium concerts in Sydney and Melbourne achieved the highest grosses anywhere in the world for this artist, more than $23 million. The year 2001 brought Shout! – The Legend of the Wild One, an all-Australian production based on the life of Jacobsen's old friend, Johnny O'Keefe. It toured Australia to record crowds, winning Mo and Green Room Awards and an ARIA for Best Cast Album. In 2002 Jacobsen presented a sell-out Elton John concert tour, plus Fame – The Musical, which toured throughout Asia, and two sensationally successful arena shows: the classic Australian rock anthology Long Way to the Top and the brilliantly innovative The Man from Snowy River Arena Spectacular. Other Jacobsen theatrical ventures have included Oscar Wilde's Diversions and Delights, Girls' Night Out, A Chorus Line, Camelot (with Richard Harris), Lend Me a Tenor, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Walt Disney's World on Ice and Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as massive open-air productions of Aida and Turandot. Among the many artists who have toured under the Jacobsen banner are Slim Whitman, KISS, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Marley, Shania Twain, Billy Joel, John Denver, Pearl Jam, Cyndi Lauper, Julio Iglesias, Ba

Herb is looking GOOD in a conservative grey suit. He's also spouting the supply-side doctrine of the new Reagan Administration. Who is this fellow in the nice-looking suit, and what have you done with our Herb??!!But Herb's threads are nothing compared to the outfit Venus assembles. Milton Brown and his Brownies- Down by the Ohio(1935) What an extraordinary voice Brown had. A pioneer of Western swing his career was tragically cut short when he died of injuries sustained in a car crash in 1936. Bob Skyles and the skyrockets- Swing it Mr drummer man(1938). Clifford kendrick on drums. Hoosiers Hot shots- Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia. Seemlessly moving into two tracks from the fabulously named Hell broke out in Georgia LP. First, more great names, Gid Tanner and his Skillet lickers- Don't you cry my honey(1930.) The Swamp rooters- Swamp cat rag(1936) They were led by fiddler Lowe Stokes, a member of the Skillet lickers. We stay with the fiddle but slow it down with The Leake County Revellers- Good night Waltz(1927.) East coast country blues is how the source LP describes the next two tracks. Lottie Kimsbrough and Winston Holmes- Lost Lover Blues(1928) A great track from lesser known artists. I've heard blues and yodelling before but never blues yodelling and birdsong. Fred McMullan and Ruth Mary Willis- Just can't stand it. Little known about these two. Both made a few recordings in the early 30s. McMullan died in the early 60s and was in prison at one point in his life. No further record of Willis's life. Just two examples of artists whose talents were recorded in the 1920s and 30s and then they just disappeared. Meade Lux Lewis- Honky Tonk Train Blues. Jimmy Yancy and Faber Smith- I received a letter. Pine Top Smith- Pine Tops's Boogie Woogie. The first time boogie woogie appears on a record label and is mentioned in a song. Pine Top Smith was a real pioneer who sadly died at the age of 25. A wee excerpt from a rather 'faded' 78rpm featuring a meeting between The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. The two pioneering acts of early country music. Then it's Jimmie solo, not yodelling, with I'm Lonesome too. Back to Britain. To listen to how the US influenced music here. Harry Torrani- Log Cabin Yodel (1932.) Slim Whitman rated Torrani as the best yodeller of all time. He certainly had a sweet spot voice. Incidentally yodelling was introduced in the US by a Swiss group who toured the whole country in the middle of the 19th century. Bob Mallin- Oh they're tough, mighty tough in the west. A very English delivered comic cowboy song from the late 30's. Lonnie Donegan is no stranger to Forgotten songs. Here he sings Don't let the sun go down on me. One of the many blues, folk and traditional songs from the US that he sang. He was a man who loved the very music we play here. We finish with Mugsy Spanier- Lonesome Road. A superb laid back, instrumental version of this popular song that was written in the style of an African American folk song by Nat Skillret and Gene Austin.
In Volume 96 of Sounds Like Radio's Great Gildersleeve, Gildy decides to go fishing when Katherine tells him she's going sailing with someone else!! Originally broadcast on May 17, 1950 as trouble's a brewin' in love land for Gildy today. But not to worry, especially when you have Patsy Cline, Bing Crosby, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Helen Ward, Slim Whitman & Louis Jordan all standing by to sing out for maybe just one fish Gildy might catch. It's a fun show that Your Humble Host has for you today. Let's not waste another moment, hit the play button and get ready to smile a while.
Talk about your flashbacks. Faron Young did it first and then Roy Drusky, Hank Williams then Frank Ifield. Great songs by great writers get recorded by great artist many times over. Then their are those who take a great country song and because of their own unique vocal qualities, the song reaches a whole new strata of music. Check out Slim Whitman and how he influenced me. Gosh, I even dared to put one of mine in this show. Great friends like the Good Brothers and Tenille make this a memorable show for me. Enjoy and share .

Slim Whitman is known for his yodelling style and some cringey informercials in the 80s. In this 1980 record, he resembles the lovechild of an evil cowboy and Liberace. It's a strong look, but is it a strong album? Show notes: http://www.onedollarvinyl.com/slim-whitman-songs-i-love-to-sing/

Andy Reiss is one of the true western swing and jazz guitar greats in Nashville and can be seen just about every Monday night with the amazing Time Jumpers. In our Truetone Lounge interview, Andy discusses his time in San Francisco during the height of the hippy movement, his move to Nashville and mentorship with Harold Bradley, and how he ended up on tours with everyone from Slim Whitman to Reba McEntire. Reiss also educates us in the traditional 1950's-60's guitar styles utilized by the Nashville A-Team using a 1959 ES-335, 1958 Danelectro 6-string Bass, Waterloo WL-14, and a 1941 Stromberg archtop. For good measure, he also discusses and demonstrates his 1952 Les Paul, incredibly rare blond 1966 Barney Kessel Custom, and his 1964 Fender Pro amp.
Host CloudwatcherUno sits down with Joshua Ray Walker has the voice that you find only once in a generation. Once you've listened to tracks such as 'Loving County' where he yodels his heart out and produces a spine chilling effect on your spine. Not since Dwight Yoakum and Slim Whitman has there been an artist who can combine the craft of singing, yodelling and lyrics that hit you right between the eyes to such an effect. Joshua's music makes you want to think, cry and dance all at the same time. This is an artist who at his peak did 280 shows a year and only slowed down to release his first album 'Wish You Were Here'. In the fall of 2019 he started his first Scandinavian where he discovered first hand the European love for all things country and western. Thursday Night Rock 'n' Roll is presented by Les “Harro” Harrison and airs every Thursday night between 6pm-8pm on 98.5 One FM Harro's music interests cover mostly any genre, especially rock and roll. Grew up listening to Elvis, JOK, Cliff Richard, Buddy Holly and a host of others. He is now living a childhood dream now being on radio, as he spent many childhood hours glued to the wireless in cricket season, and cold winter nights when Australia were playing in England. No TV in those days, so spare time was spent listening to such shows as the Happy Gang on 3DB, Yes What, Dad and Dave, Inspector West, D24 and of course, the Hit Parade every Sunday. Family listening around the radiogram evokes many memories of Slim Dusty, Chad Morgan, the Ink Spots and Slim Whitman. This program originally aired on Thursday the 6th of August, 2020. With a yodel that will make the coyotes crazy and a mustache you could shine your shoes with Slim Whitman was a singular unique voice and with unique career for more than 50 years.
( L-R) Andy Reiss, Harold Bradley, Shane Theriot My guest today is a now legendary figure in the history of Nashville and a member of the original “A”- team of session musicians. Mr. Harold Bradley. And, as one of the most recorded guitarists in history, if not the most (he has the session logs and union contracts to prove it) he played on thousands of recording sessions, but not just any old sessions, some of the most iconic and timeless songs of all time. I'm talking about songs like Patsy Cline's “Crazy”, Roy Orbison's “Only The Lonely”, and “Cryin'”, Tammy Wynette's “Stand by your Man”, Loretta Lynn's “Coal Miners Daughter” and so many, many others. And it's not just country music that Harold lent his giant musical thumbprint to- how ‘bout Elvis Presley? Oh and remember Burl Ives “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas?” Of course you do. You hear it every time "Frosty the Snowman" comes on every year…That's Harold. “The Battle of New Orleans” and that intro on banjo? Yep that's Harold. Brenda Lee's “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree?”…on and on…He also recorded 3 solo records “Misty Guitar”, “Guitar For Lover's Only” and “Bossa Nova Goes to Nashville” that are still both musically jaw-dropping and stunning today some 50 years later. His brother, the legendary producer Owen Bradley, was one of the architects of country music and opened the first studio on what is now known as Music Row in Nashville. It's all here folks in this interview- Harold, now 92 years young and with a memory as sharp as ever tells us the most amazing stories and recalls his legendary career. I first met Harold many years ago when we worked together with the great singer Slim Whitman -one of my first gigs when I moved to town. On the few shows we did together Harold taught me a few things that I still think about- showmanship, the importance of staying in tune, building up a collection of nice instruments and even switching up picks during the same song to get different tones. He made a real impact on a young cat back then. Even though I hadn't spoken to him in years, I phoned him and he graciously agreed to meet me and set up a time to chat. I'm so thrilled to be able to have him on Riff Raff. He is such a humble and kind person, always downplaying the impact he made and instead quick to share and give credit to the other musicians, many of whom have now passed on. You'll hear him mention the other original A team throughout this interview- Besides Harold, the other 11 people that made up the original A team were guitarists Hank Garland, Ray Edenton, and Grady Martin, steel guitarist Pete Drake, fiddler Tommy Jackson, harmonica player Charlie McCoy, bassist Bob Moore, pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins, Floyd Cramer, piano, drummer Buddy Harman, and saxophonist Boots Randolph My old friend Andy Reiss, a great guitatrist in his own right who plays with the Time Jumpers and also a close friend of Harold's also joined us for this interview.
