Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Polly Gibbons, Renowned Jazz Singer / Songwriter About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Polly Gibbons, is an internationally renowned singer from England who's rich, powerful, soulful voice delivers a unique jazz fusion that incorporates her R & B, gospel, jazz, funk and blues influences. She's been twice-nominated as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by the BBC and Jazz FM, and the London Sunday Times described her jazz vocals as “vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin”. With her raw, smouldering voice that's full of heat, she conquered the London jazz scene at the age of 17. And since then, she's become a regular at the legendary jazz club, Ronnie Scott's in London. She's performed at Royal Albert Hall, opening for George Benson and Gladys Knight, and in 2018 she had a residency at New York's legendary Birdland Jazz Club. She's performed on tour across the USA, Europe and Asia, from Java Jazz in Indonesia to the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival. In 2014, renowned producer George Klabin signed her to his record label, Resonance Records in Los Angeles, where she's recorded 3 highly acclaimed albums: “Many Faces of Love”, “Is it Me?”, and “All I Can Do”. On June 30, she'll be releasing her 9th studio album entitled, “As It Is”, containing 10 original songs composed by our guest, who not only produced the album – she accompanied herself at the piano, supported by a great team of musicians. The songs on the album feature heartfelt stories of personal struggle and resilience, with magnificent vocals, always characterized by this brilliant singer's wit and grace. In describing this woman's voice, we need go no further than Peter Quinn of Jazzwise Magazine, who proclaimed her “a truly exceptional, once-in-a-generation talent, possessing a voice of such sizzling intensity and raw emotion, that you could fry an egg on it.” For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Polly Gibbons, go to:https://www.pollygibbons.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pollygmusic/https://twitter.com/PollyGMusichttps://www.instagram.com/PollyGMusic/https://www.youtube.com/@PollyGmusichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5HHILDuntfU7shOCmCECyF?si=B5GiF9l8TvKUWuLe7ngokA&nd=1https://soundcloud.com/pollygibbonsofficial #PollyGibbons #harveybrownstoneinterviews

On the July 16 edition of the WBGO Journal, the new class of NEA Jazz Masters is announced, WBGO's Gary Walker chats with pianist Bill Charlap about "Jazz in July" and singer and executive producer Melissa Walker runs down the 2022 Montreal Jazz Festival
After a two-year slowdown due to COVID, the Montreal International Jazz Festival came back this year. I had been there a couple times, in and out, as a musician. I went this year to cover the festival's full return for WBGO and The Third Story. When you're a musician at a festival like MJF, the job is actually pretty clear. You get to the gig, play the gig, pack up and go to the next gig. But what does a member of the press do in this situation? I was given a credential badge to wear with the word JOURNALISTE written on it and an assignment to “find the story.” Pretty quickly, a narrative started to reveal itself. Or rather, several narratives, all classics. The story of the young versus the old. The story about the past versus the present. And ultimately, the story of today's community of musicians, what's on their mind as they travel this Silk Road of Rhythm which is the summer jazz festival circuit —from Montreal to Marciac, from North Sea to Umbria and beyond. Conversations with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Bill Charlap, Scott Colley, Aaron Goldberg, Samara Joy, Allison Miller, Gregory Porter, and various concert-goers, festival organizers and locals all helped to fill in the story. Self-expression, politics, social media, technology, and conservationism were all part of the fabric, but the common thread between all of them was one of empathy and communion. “This Music,” as so many of the musicians call it, represents human potential. And humans are complicated beings. But at our core, we are social beings and that is reflected in this Montreal Jazz Festival experience. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

Anomalie is the live electronic project of Nicolas Dupuis, a keyboardist and producer based in Montreal, QC. Rising to worldwide fame after the release of his two EPs, Metropole Part I and Part II, Dupuis begins the next stage of his career with his debut single, “Bond,” off his upcoming debut full-length album, Galerie, set for April 2022. This new chapter includes the announcement of the Galerie World Tour, featuring new arrangements with the Anomalie Live band, coming to 22+ cities all over the globe. Galerie marks brand new sonic directions and for the first time ever, vocal collaborations - all the while staying true to the sound that has built a worldwide fanbase and remains unmistakably Anomalie. His music innovatively combines cutting-edge electronic production, jazz, and classical harmonies, virtuoso keyboard skills, and an undeniably raw funk groove connecting it all together. This places his career in a singular position. His public cosigns include an eclectic mix of music heavyweights (Charlie Puth, Chromeo, D Smoke, and Snarky Puppy), and his fanbase is a mix of the new jazz scene (Louis Cole, Keifer), the soulful beats scene (FKJ, Masego), and the post-dubstep electronic scene (Griz, Odesza). Dupuis has a lot to reflect upon the success that got him here. By the end of 2020, Anomalie sold out two world tours (North America, European, and Asia) with his intricate 4-piece live band, grew his online following in the millions across social media, and performed at the likes of Red Rocks, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Electric Forest Festival. Most impressively, he's achieved all of this as an independent artist. He would soon be writing policies for many of Canada’s major recording artists, studios, production companies, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammy Awards). It feels weird to put this episode in the Next Big Thing series because Alex Henry Foster is so accomplished. His mainstream band Your Favorite Enemies was nominated for a Juno (Canadian music award) and his solo project hit #1 on the Billboard Canadian Albums list several times. His performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2019 is considered one of the best in festival history and is also the subject of his upcoming film. With all this mainstream success, his faith as remained at the center for him. In this episode, we talk about the artistry of this album and working through grief.
Canadian singer-songwriter, author, and activist, best known for fronting the Montreal alternative rock band “Your Favorite Enemies”, Alex Henry Foster, is our guest today. It's been a long long road to get to this point in his career, a rewarding yet challenging experience. Since the loss of his beloved father, Alex found a pathway into his own self unlike anything he could have ever predicted. The event took quite the toll to the point where he veered away from the world to focus on his own craft – and the result is some of his best work. Dare we say, his magnum opus. Alex chats with us about this experience along with the many others he has encountered in his life, and even though it's a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly, he is grateful he overcame an exponential amount of those obstacles. His newest album “Standing Under Bright Lights'', which is a live concert performed and recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival from 2019, is one of the most dedicated and passionate works of art from a musician in recent memory. Alex talks about that specific time, and the days leading up to it - from the first request to perform, to nearly not taking the stage, and to then finishing the job to a full sense of closure that gave him the peace he needed to carry out his fathers memory, and legacy. All the while cementing his own. Listen in on this amazing episode about an amazing musician, and be sure to buy the newest live album from Alex Henry Foster, “Standing Under Bright Lights'', due out April 16th on Hopeful Tragedy Records. For more on Alex Henry Foster, visit: http://alexhenryfoster.com/To stay informed on all things IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

He formed a connection to music at a very early age, primarily through playing piano by ear, and later moving on to guitar, clarinet, drums, and eventually saxophone. Bob played clarinet and later saxophone in school band programs while playing guitar and keys in garage bands through high school. The turning point which solidified Bob’s connection to music as a life long endeavor came in 1969, when he received a scholarship to attend the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. There he saw first hand what kind of commitment was involved in becoming a full time musician. It was at Interlochen that Bob met Peter Erskine, who became a colleague which continues to this day some 50 years later. Bob attended the Hartt School of music 1970-72 and the Manhattan School of Music 72-74. He was a clarinet major in both institutions while teaching himself jazz and getting together with musicians outside of school. Hartford had a small band of musicians playing jazz every night, which provided an opportunity for Bob to play regularly. In NYC the loft scene was in full swing, and Bob developed many connections in the loft sessions that were taking place nightly, sometimes until 6 in the morning. In 1974, upon finishing his year at MSM, bob joined the Tito Puente Orchestra and simultaneously did some touring with Eumir Deodato. 1975 brought an opportunity for Bob to join the Buddy Rich band and toured steadily with that band for 2 plus years. The ability to play every night, travel the world, and begin to write arrangements was a golden opportunity. By 1978 Bob was playing with several small jazz groups (Stone Alliance, Teruo Nockamura, a short encounter with Art Blakey, Joe Chambers, Mike Manieri) and was asked to join the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Bob played with Thad and Mel for 6 months, and later with Mel, as Thad had moved to Europe. In 1980 Bob arranged a project for the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra to be recorded live at the Montreal Jazz Festival of the music of Herbie Hancock. In 1981 through 1982 Bob was a member of the Jaco Pastorius Word of Mouth band., playing tenor sax, bass clarinet, and doing some arranging/composing for both the big and small band components. There are several recordings and videos of this band out and about. In 1983 Bob started his big band in NYC which consisted of many of the finest musicians in town (Michael and Randy Brecker, Marvin Stamm, Lou Soloff, Barry Rogers, Dave Taylor, Don Grolnick, Will Lee, Peter Erskine, Roger Rosenberg). The band performed regularly at 7th Avenue South (club o...

Son of the Grammy nominated band Boukman Eksperyans, his earliest memories are of rhythm and sound. Moving to New York as a youth he was inspired by his heritage to begin crafting a sound all his own. Constantly aware of his roots, the struggle of an immigrant and the drive of New York life, Paul began to create a path where music, activism and history meet. A unique and transfixing sound he calls 'Roots/Blues', Paul weaves his impeccable guitar skills, rich, vocals, musical ingenuity and cultural history together; all while performing a smooth melange of both English, French and Creole (the native tongue of his Haitian roots). Paul has played alongside some of the world's best artists including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Arcade Fire, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. Worldwide performances include venues such as The Beacon Theater and Radio City Music Hall in NYC, Massey Hall in Toronto, The Ryman Theatre in Nashville, The House of Blues in Chicago, The Montreal Jazz Festival, Festival Internationale Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal, Le Trianon in Paris, The Paleo Festival in Switzerland, No Siesta Fiesta in Norway. These continued accomplishments make him one of the few artists coming out of Haiti to garner worldwide success. Paul has joined forces with Artists for Peace and Justice, and become an integral part of their organization. He is currently working in collaboration with Jackson Browne, and several other artists including Jon Russell (the Head and the Heart), Jonathan Wilson, Habib Koite, Jenny Lewis and Raul Rodriguez on an upcoming album for APJ. He also continues to be an active member and perform at their many events in the USA and Canada. This allows Paul to do what he loves; play music while also furthering awareness of Haitian art, culture and promoting the incredible talent of Haiti's youth. Paul’s album titled 'Vilnerab', released in 2015, soared directly to #1 on itunes in the World Music category, receiving rave reviews. In 2016, he was nominated for a Dora Award by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts for ‘Outstanding Sound Design/Composition’ in the production of Espwa/Espoir. In May of 2018 on Ropeadope Records, Paul released an english/creole album, ‘Ayibobo’ , continuing his evolution of sound into Rock/Roots/Blues music. On April 17th, 2020, Paul released his third album entitled ‘Rasanbleman’. Recorded live at the Cine Institute in Haiti, this album offers listeners a chance to enjoy the raw and emotive energy of uncut and raw power that Paul brings to his sounds.

Brooks Robertson discusses his finger picking guitar lessons available on TrueFire, performs, and answers questions. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Brooks Robertson: Brooks Robertson just doesn't need much more than two thumbs, eight fingers and six strings on a wooden box to carry his listeners away. Hailed by prominent exponents of his instrument like Nokie Edwards, Thom Bresh, John Jorgenson and Mason Williams, the young fingerstyle guitarist embodies the creative vision of a postmodern world: It's the music that counts. Brooks utilizes his superb technical abilities to play bass, rhythm and melody simultaneously and surpass the borders of conventional genres. He merges hauntingly beautiful compositions, country rhythms and jazzy harmonies with funky licks into his very own art form – sometimes delivered with a punch, sometimes with a smile. Brooks was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1989. Seeing Buster B. Jones perform at a festival near his home town became a life-changing experience for the kid from the sticks. Just eleven years old, he was immediately inclined to pick up the guitar. Soon, the world renowned fingerstyle virtuoso and instructor dedicated his spare time to introducing his new fan into the secrets of the fretboard, and after six months of lessons the natural talent performed his first show with his mentor. When Buster B. Jones took him under his wings, Brooks began playing high-profile gigs such as the Nokie Edwards Festival, the NAMM Show in Anaheim, the Montreal Jazz Festival or the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield among others. By the time he was a teenager he had become the youngest endorsee of Godin Guitars and traveled to several states and foreign countries to perform.Brooks went on to play on Garrison Keillor's National Public Radio classic "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2004, where he won first place in a talent competition for 12 to 20 year old participants. In recent years, while still appearing regularly at prestigious events like the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) Convention in Nashville, Brooks focussed on perfecting his craft, soaking up new tunes and styles and techniques as well as blending them into his own groovy and soulful original music. He entered the "Yamaha Six String Theory Guitar Competition", which drew participants from more than 40 countries all over the world. Brooks was invited to perform in the finals at the Broad Stage in Los Angeles in March 2010. A star-studded jury, including Steve Lukather and Lee Ritenour, eventually chose him as winner of the country category and second place winner overall. Although he is deeply rooted in the powerful tradition of the genre, founded by the likes of Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, Thom Bresh and Buster B. Jones, Brooks also draws inspiration from the elegant mastery of the legendary Chet Atkins and other phenomenal players. His own compositions and arrangements have even been compared to fingerstyle jazz champions Lenny Breau and Earl Klugh. Now, as energy and maturity come together, this young man is ready to step out of his mentors' shadows and electrify the world with the sheer acoustic beauty his fingers create, when touching a set of strings."I was completely knocked out with the acoustic guitar virtuosity of Brooks Robertson! Brooks has a very original touch and sound plus monster chops. He's always making great music with his guitar. I'm sure Brooks will be sharing his music with the entire world and have an incredible career." Lee Ritenour (Grammy award winning guitarist ) "He is slicker than a cat on a greased pole." Nokie Edwards (The Ventures, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) "Brooks Robertson plays like the house is on fire." Thom Bresh (legendary thumbpicker) "Brooks Robertson is well-equipped to carry on the legacy of Buster B Jones' powerful and funky guitar style. Any player would be very proud to have such an accomplished guitarist as a protégé. Brooks' personal playing and composing style is equally compelling, as audiences around the world are finding out. The solo guitar's future is in good hands with players like Brooks out there!" John Jorgenson (Elton John, Desert Rose Band, Hellecasters) "All guitar players are like Frankensteins. Their music is made out of bits and pieces of other players. In Brooks' case, he's a son of a Frankenchops, the well known monster picker Buster B. Jones. Buster and Brooks are both so scary ... the legend continues." Mason Williams ("Mr. Classical Gas") "Brooks Robertson is a superb and exciting guitarist. I love his playing!" Pat Bergeson (Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lyle Lovett, Madeleine Peyroux) "Brooks Robertson has one of the very best techniques in fingerstyle guitar. You can hear the influences of Buster B. Jones, Jerry Reed, and all the great fingerpickers past ... and he's writing some fabulous new material. An amazing guitar player who's showing the rest of us how it's done! Nobody whops Brooks Robertson!" Richard Smith (fingerstyle virtuoso) "Brooks Robertson's playing is wonderful, rhythmically precise, harmonically complex and melodically compelling. How he controls all three simultaneously, blending them into something musically engaging, is remarkable. He's a gem." Neil Andersson (Pearl Django)

Seth and Rob set the table with a talk about Stanley Clarke and all of the musicians he has worked with over the years. Clarke is an innovative jazz-and-beyond bassist who even had a bit of hit with the title track of his Stanley Clarke Band record, “School Days” in the 70s, and with the landmark fusion band, Return To Forever. We learn about when the now-iconic “School Days” bass line came to Stanley, and about how RTF-band-mate Chick Corea convinced Stanley to start writing years before that. Stanley elaborates on the importance of Art Blakey, and about how Clarke was so moved by John Coltrane that he at one point even seriously considered ditching his bass to play sax. Stanley also talks about his recent work with the Smithsonian, how he chose to play Alembic bass. and the great honor recently bestowed upon him by the Montreal Jazz Festival. Stanley very much continues to make amazing music today, and the genesis and ethos of his poignant 2018 release, The Message is discussed. Stanley benefits from the compositional and performance talents of some incredible young musicians on this record, many of which are discussed including Cameron Graves (a founding member of West Coast Get Down) and Beka Gochiashvili (who was discovered by Condoleeza Rice in Georgia, the former Soviet republic). Perhaps best of all for some, Stanley shares some memories about jazz pioneer, Charles Mingus. Before the episode ends Seth shares his experiences at the Hulaween Festival in Florida, and Rob talks about seeing Bob Dylan in North Carolina and Bob Weir and The Wolf Brothers in Tennessee. Daniel Johnston bookends today's show with in-between bits courtesy of Benjamin Clementine, Trampled by Turtles and even Slash among others. Plus we uncover the sampled track featured in a stadium-filling indie classic, by accident. Track Listing True Love Will Find You In the End Daniel JohnstonLondon Benjamin ClementineAlone Trampled by TurtlesIn The Meantime SpacehogTelephone and Rubber Band Penguin Café OrchestraProof I am KlootStarlight Slash and Myles KennedySpace Ducks Theme Song Daniel Johnston Hi, How Are You? Daniel Johnston bookends our show today. A singer-songwriter widely regarded as a significant figure in alternative music scenes. Much of Daniel Johnston's catalogue is home recorded and often cited as being "childlike". In the show, Richard talks of his personal experiences with family members and Daniel but sadly this episode in his life has long since been over. We discussed in the show that Kurt Cobain wore a t-shirt with artwork from Daniel's Yip/Jump Music album. This is actually incorrect. Kurt wore a t-shirt depicting artwork from Johnston's Hi, How Are You? LP but cited Yip/Jump Music as one of his favourite records of 1993. This proved to be a hell of a recommendation. Hence there ensued a bidding war between record labels to sign him. Despite Daniel being resident in a mental hospital at that time. Plagued by mental health issues He has suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder all his life. Daniel had a psychotic episode after appearing at a music festival in 1990 whilst being flown back to West Virginia by his father Bill (a former USAF pilot) in his 2 seater plane. He believed he was Casper the Friendly Ghost and removed the keys from the plane's ignition and threw them outside. Miraculously Bill managed to crash land the plane in a densely wooded area. Both sustained only minor injuries. The incident completely destroyed the plane. Daniel Johnston was involuntarily admitted to mental hospital again after the incident. Further, in his career, Daniel was the subject of a Sundance Film Festival Director's Award winning film (2005) The Devil and Daniel Johnston. The highly praised film collates much of Daniel's vast output. It proved to inspire more interest in Daniel's work. In 2012 he published his comic book Space Ducks - An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness which apparently has a linked iOs app which we have been spectacularly unable to find. Daniel retired from performing live in 2017. Apple used his song The Story of an Artist in a TV commercial in 2018. Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine What a rich story for such a young man. As Tobin mentioned in the show, Benjamin was homeless in Paris by the time he was leaving his teens. As a result of performing music on the streets he became something of a cult figure in the Parisian music scene. He composed and wrote during the day and performed in the evening. Because of this, he managed to stay out of trouble. He was eventually spotted by an agent and a meeting was set up for the following day. Before signing a major deal, Clementine was working with a French tour agent and the independent label set up through Lionel Bensemoun (a French business mogul) which enabled Clementine to record his music. He was booked for some major festivals, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Eurosonic Festival, the latter of which he was billed as one of the highlights. As a result of these performances, Clementine was billed for the 2013 North Sea Jazz Festival but failed to turn up. He was thrown off a train for failing to have a valid ticket, something he attributed to not being paid by his agent. Penniless he began the 45km walk to Rotterdam to perform, which eventually took him 10 hours, thus missing his stage appearance. He arrived at his destination with bare feet and bleeding toes. Regardless of this setback, he received an invite to play at the festival in 2015.
This episode of Blunt Force Truth will take you back to a previous interview with Joe Piscopo. Chuck and Mark talked about issues remain in the public eye since the interview. Plus, there is plenty of comedy worth revisiting from this trio. Joe Piscopo is an actor and comedian who hosts Piscopo in the Morning on AM970 THE ANSWER out of New York City, where he discusses the news of the day without the progressive spin of most media outlets. He talks about his own political foundations, where he was once a moderate Democrat but now the Democratic party has become Progressive Socialist Party. Joe reveals his story of his becoming a Conservative, while offering up some perspective on being positive in the face of the left's hatred, to truly make America great. He expresses his confusion is with the way Trump is being investigated constantly, when nobody is talking about the various Clinton scandals. Also, Chuck and Mark talk about the feminization of men and boys and what physical consequences we're seeing because of it. They also talk about the left pushing for a ban on assault weapons, looking at California's over-the-top laws as an example of what the nation could be in for. About the guest: Joe Piscopo is the host of the Joe Piscopo Morning Show, which airs weekdays from 6-10am on AM970 The Answer. Television, film, theater, nightclubs—they're all fields in which Joe Piscopo has won the acclaim and affection of millions. For over 25 years, Joe has proven to be one of show business' brightest lights. After stints as a disc jockey and dinner-theater performer, Joe turned to comedy. In 1980, he was chosen to join a newly formed ensemble charged with one of the most difficult tasks in TV history—replacing the original cast of Saturday Night Live. By the time he left the show in 1985, Joe had left his mark on the program, and the nation, thanks to his wide range of hilarious original characters and celebrity impersonations, from The Sports Guy and Doug Whiner to David Letterman and, of course, Frank Sinatra, who repeatedly endorsed Joe's portrayal of him, referring to Joe as 'The Vice-Chairman of the Board.' His work on SNL naturally led to Hollywood and starring roles in such smash hits as Wise Guys (with Danny DeVito) and Johnny Dangerously (with Michael Keaton). Other film credits include "Dead Heat, Sidekicks with Chuck Norris and a dramatic, critically acclaimed performance in Jonathan Parker's Bartleby. Joe recently had the lead role of Jack Cosmo in the musical comedy, "How Sweet It Is" with Paul Sorvino. Look for upcoming films from Joe's, Avellino Films, "Joey Benefit" and "Bloomfield Avenue." In January 1996, Joe conquered yet another realm when he starred on Broadway as disc jockey Vince Fontaine in Grease! Live performances have always been an important part of Joe's career. He has long been one of America's most popular comedy concert attractions, filling arenas and casino showrooms from coast to coast and in Canada. (Including the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival!) Joe tours with his own original Big Band tribute to Frank Sinatra, as well as his multimedia comedy show. You might have also seen Joe as a guest on The FOX News Channel or co-hosting The Columbus Day Parade each year in NYC with Maria Bartiromo or on The Late Show with David Letterman. Piscopo received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County, NJ and was the keynote speaker at the Big Brothers Big Sisters National Conference in Chicago. In addition, Piscopo has received Community Service Awards from Boys and Girls Clubs in New Jersey and Broward Co., Fla. and is especially proud to have been recognized by Boy's Town of Italy in Rome. Joe was inducted into the West Essex High School Hall of Distinction. (Joe graduated from West Essex and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Broadcast Management,...
Grant held the guitar chair in the legendary David Grisman Quintet for six years, and has worked alongside artists like Edgar Meyer, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, Darol Anger, Dominick Leslie, Alex Hargreaves and Joe K. Walsh. Grant’s performed all over North America and Europe, including Carnegie Hall, Montreal Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Bonnaroo. Definitely one of the most intense and introspective interviews I’ve done. Grant and I dig really deep in the second half of this call when we talk about everything from happiness… struggling when it comes to asking for help… feeling undeserving… finding your musical voice, getting comfortable in your own skin, and more. Truly one of the most genuine guys you’ll have the pleasure of getting to know. After witnessing Bria's tenacity first hand it became increasingly important for me to shine a light on her innate ability to breath life into her dreams through hard work, focused leadership and vision. On this episode of The Working Artist Project, we explore Bria's past with the purpose of decoding her formula for success. Enjoy the show. Connect with Bria here: http://www.briaskonberg.com Connect with Darrian here: http://www.secondlinearts.org Bio New York based Canadian singer, trumpeter and songwriter Bria Skonberg has been described as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation” (Wall Street Journal). Recognized as one of 25 for the Future by DownBeat Magazine, Bria Skonberg has been a force in the new generation with her bold horn melodies and smoky vocals, and adventurous concoctions of classic and new. Bria is signed to Sony Music Masterworks' OKeh Records and released her debut LP in September 2016, Bria, which won a Canadian JUNO award and made the Top 5 on Billboard jazz charts. She collaborated again with producer Matt Pierson, as well as multi-Grammy winner Gil Goldstein, for her second Sony album, With A Twist, released May 2017. Her take on Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me To The End of Love” has garnered over 1.3 million streams. Noted as a millennial “shaking up the jazz world,” (Vanity Fair), Bria Skonberg has played festivals and stages the world over, including New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and over a hundred more. She recently performed the Star Spangled Banner at Madison Square Garden for an NHL game. Originally from the small town of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Bria studied jazz and performance at Capilano University in Vancouver while balancing a full road schedule with two bands. After graduating, she traveled extensively, performing in China and Japan and throughout Europe. When she wasn't traveling, Bria was honing her chops with Dal Richards, Vancouver's King of Swing. Playing BC Place Stadium at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver capped off this exciting period, with Bria featured at the Paralympics opening ceremony. Seeking new challenges, Bria moved to New York city in September of 2010. Upon arrival she went to jam with friends in Washington Square Park and an hour into playing world renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis stopped to listen. He gave her a thumbs up. In 2012, Bria released So Is The Day (Random Act Records). That collection showcased a developing flair for original songs and new takes on standards, including a duet with John Pizzarelli. So Is The Day received rave reviews from critics; “while tipping a hat to tradition, [So Is The Day] appropriately pushes Bria Skonberg to the forefront of today's musical talents” (All About Jazz). In 2015, following her second album Into Your Own, Skonberg received the distinguished Jazz At Lincoln Center Swing Award. Further accolades include Best Vocal and Best Trumpet awards from Hot House Jazz Magazine (2014-15, 2017), Outstanding Jazz Artist from the New York Bistro Awards (2014), DownBeat Rising Star (2013-17), and a nominee for Jazz Journalists Association Up and Coming Artist (2013). She is an avid educator and supporter of public school opportunities, giving numerous workshops and concerts for students of all ages. Bria has been a faculty member at the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Camp (2008- present), Centrum Jazz Camp, performs outreach on behalf of Jazz at Lincoln Center and co-founded the New York Hot Jazz Camp for adults in 2015. She is also co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival. Support this podcast
Welcome to episode 103 of Love That Album podcast. In July 2017, I went with my family to the other side if the world - Canada to be precise - to take in the magnificent musical experience that is the Montreal Jazz Festival. We heard jazz fusion, free jazz, bop, soul, New Orleans funk, bluegrass.....and then there's the shimmering beauty that is the music of the Juno-winning British Columbian songwriter, Sienna Dahlen. Her performance with a rhythm section, a string section and a horn section in front of hundreds (maybe thousands) of music fans in the Place Des Arts was nothing short of breathtaking. I was astounded to learn that her latest album Ice Age Paradise, from which the concert material was sourced, was recorded in a mere two days. Upon my return to Australia, I contacted Sienna to discuss her album, her musical development, and winter.I was also fortunate that her father Laine was with her. Laine is an amazing artist and a songwriter to boot - one of his songs appears on Ice Age Paradise. It was a fascinating chat and I hope that you enjoy it and discovering her music. Eric Reanimator returns with his Album I Love segment to talk about Carla Bozulich and her track-for-track interpretation of the classic Willie Nelson album Red Headed Stranger (and Willie is so impressed, he even graces her with his presence on three songs). You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com.Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. You can order a download copy of Ice Age Paradise from https://siennadahlen1.bandcamp.com/releases or you can email her at siennadahlen@gmail.com to order a physical copy of the album (either CD or vinyl). Order a copy....you'll thank me later. Check out the amazing artwork and music of Laine Dahlen at https://www.lainedahlen.com/If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune into the podcast.

My guest today is Mr. Zachary Richard. Songwriter, performer, poet, activist. Zachary is like a "Cajun- renaissance" man, who has never ceased promoting and educating others about the French identity of South Louisiana and his Cajun heritage. Beginning his career in the early 1970's up to now- with almost 25 albums to his name, Grammy nominations, 3 volumes of poetry and even children's books, he remains a prolific and passionate artist. (And as you'll hear Zachary has had some great guitarists and musicians in his bands, among them Sonny Landreth and Bill Dillon.) As you'll hear in this interview, Zachary is also a very soulful singer, and puts his heart into all his lyrics and song ideas. In this episode, Zachary discusses songwriting, his Cajun heritage, guitars, and we also play a few songs together. This episode of the Riff Raff was recorded in the front parlor of my home in New Orleans, LA on a beautiful day on June 4, 2017.
