On Tipp FM's Evening News, The 5.45: You may remember a story we brought to you last year about a young man who had fallen from a bridge in Nenagh and recalled waking up and being told that he may never walk again. Last year Sheila Naughton went to visit Colin Lernihan as he spent time in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, and back then he had no idea what the future would hold, what the prognosis was and he had days where he wasn't sure if he could keep going. We're over a year on from that first meeting and Sheila spoke to Colin today about what has happened since then :
On Tipp FM's Evening News, The 5.45 : Jigsaw is a mental health charity with a hub here in thurles. The charity focuses on improving mental health outcomes for young people aged between 12 and 25 and is an intervention service model. They have hopes that they may be able to open another centre in Clonmel this year but in order to do that there must be goverment support and invesmtent in Mental Health Services. Emer Leahy is the Service Manager for the Tipperary Jigsaw branch and she joined Sheila Naughton earlier today - Sheila started by asking about her thoughts on the recent report from the Mental Health Commission on CAMHS:
On Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45 : Over the august Bank Holiday weekend Ireland's Strongest Man is coming to Limerick, so only a stones throw away, and it will be held in the Markets Field Stadium, in Garryowen on the 6th. This is going to see 16 of Ireland's strongest men fight it out for the title and while there are no Tipperary based athletes, Jamie McNamara from Limerick will at least be representing the South and having come 4th last year has his sights set even higher this year. Sheila Naughton, who also competes herself, caught up with him just a few weeks out and started by asking how he got involved in the sport :
On Tipp FM's evening news The 5.45: You'll have heard today that Tipperary has a 5.2% vacancy rate – but what does that mean? The report by GeoDirectory also shows Nenagh is the most expensive town to buy in at the moment. Well, the information was published for Quarter 2 in the GeoDirectory Residential Buildings Report today and Chief Executive Dara Keogh joined Sheila Naughton to discuss the results. She started by first asking what data it is they look at when compiling these reports:
On Tipp FM's evening news The 5.45: It seems it could be the right time to get on the property ladder if you are in Tipperary. Myhome.ie has published its quarterly report today and it shows the market is stabilizing somewhat despite the year on year increases here. There are currently 513 properties for sale in the Premier county at a median asking price of 200,000 euro- which Joanne says is expected given the size of Tipp. While the figures still show a year on year increase of 15,000 euro here, she says that it is starting to slow and demand and supply are stabilizing. Joanna Geary is the Managing Director and has been speaking to Sheila Naughton about this :
On Tipp FM's Evening News, The 5.45: A Tipperary ETB school is offering alternative teaching models to help boys across the South East. Coláiste Shliabh na mBan is located just outside Clonmel and caters for male students with Educational Needs that may not have been met in mainstream classes. Last week a group of young men were brought out with the Clonmel and District Anglers to learn how to fly fish and meet just one of the groups open to them in their community. Sheila Naughton headed out with the group - this is how they got on:
On Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45 : This week an ESRI report found that there are around 12,000 problem gamblers in Ireland. However, researchers also say that it is likely this number is substantially lower than the true figure. There were other findings such as younger men being more likely to engage in problem gambling, as well as the area in which you live and your mental health also having an impact. Eddie Kendrick is a local counsellor but he also works in the Spafield family resource centre and Three Drive in Tipp as a gambling support worker, we wanted to get his thoughts. Sheila Naughton started by asking if the figure of 12,000 was surprising:
Today in Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45: An initiative in Tipperary primary schools has introduced more children to coding. Last week eight schools went to Microsoft in Dublin for the inaugural Dream Space Showcase where they each demonstrated their STEM- based projects to experts. The areas included were : Boher BCP Boher School Birdhill N.S. Lackamore N.S. Kiloscully BCP Drom N.S. & BCP Rossmore Scratchers BCP Rossmore N.S. Sheila Naughton caught up with a group of students and their principal from Drom NS who told me all about the programme and the positive impact it had. Here you will hear- Bella Ryan, Tommy Burke, and Sadhbh Walsh, along with their principal Amadean Moore Walsh:
On Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45: A Tipperary LGBTQI+ activist says taking to the streets for pride is more important than ever. Saoirse Mackin from Ballyporeen is the co-founder of Transplus Pride Cork and says that while pride festivals are often a celebration now, they are an act of rebellion associated with political unrest. Saoirse says that there is more violence targeting members of the LGBTQI+ community now than there was 5 years ago. Sheila Naughton has been speaking to Saoirse about the purpose of these marches and started by asking about Transplus Pride:
A new service allowing people to make their own funeral arrangements is coming to Tipp. My Farewell Wishes is an Irish owned funeral planning business currently working with over 40 of the country's top funeral directors across 58 locations. It was founded by Cavan based undertaker Colm Kieran and tech entrepreneur Dean Gammell in response to a growing demand from customers for pre-planning services. Sheila Naughton has been speaking to Colm as the services begins its rollout here:
On Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45: A Tipperary survivor of Child Sexual Abuse has been announced as an Ambassador for CARI. The charity, also known as Children at Risk Ireland, has launched an appeal to raise €85,000 to fund their yearly cost of running their helpline which at present is not Government funded. In order to help get the message out there prominent Tipperary businessman and former Toomevara hurler Tony Delaney has become a CARI Ambassador - you may remember that he opened up about how he was sexually abused by a club player when he was just a boy - and has spoken with Fran here on Tipp Today and indeed on the Late Late. Chief executive and clinical officer Emer O'Neill has been speaking to Sheila Naughton about this appeal and started by detailing a bit more about what CARI is:
We are onto week two of Ours to Protect... and this week it is all about Electric Cars. With 211 newly registered EVs in Tipperary as of January it is likely this trend will continue, and that means the need for chargers will grow. EasyGo has been brought in by Tipperary County Council to install a number of new charging points across the county North and South and they should be here by August. Sheila Naughton spoke to Chris Kelly the CEO of EasyGo:
On Tipp FM's Evening news , The 5.45: Network Ireland Tipperary will announce the winners tonight of their Businesswoman of the Year Awards. This is a group that brings women together who are entrepreneurs, managers, business owners from North and South Tipp to socialize, network, and learn from one another. Joanne O'Herlihy is the President of the Tipperary branch and a business owner herself - Sheila Naughton began by discussing with her what they do as a collective :
On Tipp M's evening news, The 5.45: Blood stocks in Ireland are getting critically low - while we are not at an amber warning just yet, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service has issued a Pre Amber Alert. But what does that mean - and what is the impact? Sometimes it is easy to hear this and get on with your day but what if you are one of the people in need of a surgery that could be cancelled due to low supply. Alex O'Connor is the Donor Recruitment and Retention Executive for our region and he started by outlining to Sheila Naughton the current situation:
Today on Tipp FM's evening news The 5.45 : In recent weeks legislation was enacted that means any victim of domestic violence can now avail of 5 days leave form work - with no questions asked. There are a number of reasons this was brought in from stigmatization of Domestic Violence, to allowing court attendance without having to take holidays, to responding to an emergency incident or indeed any of the other impacts that are created through such abuse. However, what I wanted to know is - was all as it seemed - would this help those who needed it, was it enough to give 5 days and what would employers need. Sheila Naughton spoke to Rhea Hanton who is the Court Support worker with Cuan Saor the women's refuge here in Clonmel about all of this and she began by telling me about the legislation itself:
Facilitators are needed to see the establishment of a support group for those who've lost a loved one to suicide in Tipperary. HUGG is a group that is specifically for adults and sees volunteers with lived experiences support others who are dealing with a loss of this nature. Phyllis Conway is a facilitator in Waterford who lost her son Sean in 2017, and she says many of people in Tipperary have to travel to the group there for meetings. She says that they are hoping to see HUGG in every county in Ireland and if there are people in the Premier who are in a place to help they're encouraged to reach out. Phyllis spoke to Sheila Naughton about her own story and path to finding HUGG :
Today on Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45: The most recent meeting of the Clonmel Borough saw a huge amount of conversation around tourism, the Blueway, and sadly the anti-social behaviour around the town. While there were some positive updates for those looking to cycle the town this coming summer - there are on-going issues with groups of young poeple on the Blueway intimidating users. Sheila Naughton spoke to Councillor Michael Murphy about this after a recent run in he had with a group - but we started by discussing the E-bike scheme :
There is no shortage of Entrepreneurs when it comes to Tipperary … and three of the county's business people have been shortlisted in this year's EY Entrepreneur Of The Year programme. Now while this is always a major feat this year in particular saw a record number of nominees enter meaning this accomplishment is even more impressive. So of the 24 three are from the Premier - they are Ray Nangle & Geraldine Killian of The Lunch Bag in Nenagh - who provide lunches to schools across the country which are both nutritious, and affordable and reduce food and packaging waste and Declan Wynne of Skanstec in Clonmel a specialist engineering company delivering infrastructural projects within the energy and telecommunications sector. Last week they all travelled to Singapore for the CEO Retreat which is one of the first parts of the programme - Sheila Naughton spoke to Declan while he was there to hear about how they were getting on :
We have come to the end of our first mini series here on the 5.45 - over the past week we have spoken to female Councillors, Senators, former mayors, and a group working to see more women elected... To finish up Sheila Naughton was joined by Tipperary' s youngest female councillor, who ran at just 21, after finishing her college exams. Máirín McGrath is an independent Councillor in South Tipp - she spoke all about her journey into politics :
On The 5.45 : Today an event took place in Thurles to encourage more women to get in volved in politics here in Tipperary. See Her Elected were running the morning event in conjunction with the caucus and the council - and we heard from them yesterday you can listen back to that on the podcast section. Today the key note address was delivered by former Tipp Senator Kathleen O'Meara - and she joined Sheila Naughton straight after to talk about how it went and her own career in politics :
On Thursday there is going to be an event run by See Her Elected coming to Tipperary - the aim is to see more women engaged and involved in politics in the county - and while it will help those who may run in the local elections organise their campaign they also want to reach any woman who may want to just engage more in their local political scene to get involved. So we have decided that this week on The 5.45 to look at women in politics in Tipperary - let's see it from all sides current councillors, past Oireachtas members, those unelected but involved in local parities. Sheila Naughton begins by talking to the Chair of the Tipperary Women's Caucus and Cathaoirleach of the Thurles Templemore MD - Fine Gael's Peggy Ryan. They discuss everything from her journey into the role of Councillor, juggling parenting and her job and the role of the Caucus:
So often we hear that poor internet connection - or lack of broadband infrastructure is limiting people in the county from either improving or progressing their business, from working at home, or even just connecting with people in a personal capacity. While NBI continue to carry out their work under the National Broadband Plan, SIRO a Broadband Network Operator is also targeting areas across Tipperary to expand and bring fibre broadband to more residents. It was announced today that the company will now move into three other towns locally. This has been warmly welcomed by Tipperary County Council with the Cathaoirelach commenting that 'As the digital economy grows, we must ensure that its opportunities and benefits are felt in every town, village and outlying rural area in our county. Roger Kennedy says 'We need a digital infrastructure that supports business transformation and connects communities'. This was echoed by Joe McGrath the CEO of the local authority who feels this can secure sustainable economic growth and prosperity into the future for Tipp. To get more information and an idea of the numbers to be connected Sheila Naughton spoke to Siro's Director of Corporate Affairs Amanda Glancy:
Knocklofty House has been at the centre of news stories over the years as a campaign group tried to save the listed building. However, it seems now that attention has moved to the residents living in the estate there - with reports of some deplorable conditions and tenants being treated with compete disrepect. Local Sinn Fein Rep for the Clonmel area Dean McGrath says they are now forced to publicly call on the recievers to accept responsibility and afford these residents their human rights. Sheila Naughton has been speaking to Dean McGrath about the issues there at present:
Over the weekend there were walks held across Tipperary to raise awareness about Mental Health and Suicide awareness. In Cahir the newly formed Youth Club Teen Cave decide to set up their own – called the Dawn Walk- and start the conversation and take action to address the mental health issues they themselves have experienced and that they have seen developing in their peers around them. Something that was clear – is that people feel community and amenities are important for all age groups to maintain mental wellness and that is lacking here in South Tipperary. Sheila Naughton went along to see who else was out and about before the birds :
A town in the south of the county feels they have been left behind by the council. Residents in Killenaule have long called for speed control measures to be introduced in the area as is seen in their surrounding towns and villages. I have been at countless council meetings where the lack of safety measures has been raised and time and time again there is the same conversation around it being a speed issue and therefore a behaviour issue and something the Gardaí should deal with. However, that doesn't help to allay the concerns of the people of Killenaule and Sheila Naughton has been speaking to Jerry Kelly a member of the Killenaule Community Group about what they need to see:
Today on Tipp FM's evening news, The 5.45: It looks like there could be changes coming down the line for our political landscape in Tipperary. The first ever electoral commission has been established in Ireland and they have been tasked with reviewing all 39 of the Dáil constituencies and our European Parliament constituencies also. This is likely to be one of the most significant reviews in the history of the state as the initial figures show serious underrepresentation based on our electoral laws - for example in Tipperary - there is a population now of 162,987 people, with 5 TDs, that means each TD has 32,597 constituents while law says they should have no more than 30,000 each. However, where this gets complicated is - there cannot be any six seat constituencies so the Commission will be forced to make other recommendations and that may see boundary changes- something I imagine is a worry for our representatives. Sheila Naughton heard form Brian Dawson earlier today who is the Communications and Public Engagement Manager for the Commission about what this all means and how you can have your say :
I am sure many of us know or have heard of the work that Barretstown does - But what you may not know is how much the organisation has grown in recent years and moreover that it was a Cahir woman who is the CEO. Dee Ahearne was recently named Social Entrepreneur of the Year because of her leadership at the helm of the charity which offers free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and their families living with a serious illness – supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care. Sheila Naughton spoke to Dee about her work, the award and what Barretstown does for people across the country:
The inaugural ‘Dawn Walk' is taking place in South Tipp this weekend. It has been organised by the newly established youth club in Cahir, Teen Cave, and a number of other local organisations, in order to raise money for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. It coincides with other similar walks that are happening across the county and country, but the members of the youth group want to do this so that they can continue their work in raising awareness about mental health in the community here directly. Sheila Naughton has been speaking to James Egan and Paige O'Connell from the group ahead of Saturday :
With more banks exiting the market and a certian unease within society about the future of the remaining instutions the CEO of Clonmel Credit Union says they're becmoming more relevant than ever. Padraig Enright was speaking about the role that the Credit Union now plays as more banking services leave communities in Tipperary. This was something that was discussed most recently when the Irish League of Credit Unions met in Kerry - with the league showing that they continue to solidy their presence in local communities. For many of us we connect the Credit Union with our communion and confirmation money - but they do much more than that now - something Sheila Naughton discussed with Padraig Enright :
In breaking news this evening paediatric palliative care services are now in place for South East with immediate effect. Deputy Michael Lowry confirmed today that after a long campaign families will no longer have to fight for services during the most distressing days of their lives Today's decision is huge for those in need of this services Sheila Naughton asked Deputy Lowry for full details :
Calling for assistance immediately is crucial when it comes to tackling forest fires, according to Tipperary Chief Fire Assistant. Carol Kennedy has issued the advice in the wake of the bank holiday weekend when more people will be out visiting wooded areas locally. She says that any rubbish left behind could act a kindling, including glass and any barbeque equipment, and she is reminding people to take everything away with them. Carol told Tipp FM that if a fire starts and you feel you cannot get it under control you should call the fire service as soon as possible, but she also had some other advice for landowners when she spoke to Sheila Naughton :
The South Tipperary Hospice Movement is a service that is much respected and needed here in the county and many groups and communities fundraise regularly for the service. The group provides palliative care, and support for people in South Tipperary and West Waterford with an advanced incurable disease and indeed their families at the most vulnerable time of their lives. Well 32 years on from their foundation the promise that the HSE would cover their core funding has been realised… Ann Guida spokesperson for the group has been telling Sheila Naughton about what this means for the future of the service ...
Tipperary Town has been selected to be part of new initiative tackling vacancy levels- and it is one of only five nationwide to be included. Over the last number of months and indeed years issues with particularly high levels of vacancy in the West Tipp town have been a talking point. Well under the Irish Architecture Foundation's (IAF) Reimagine Hometown programme it's hoped this will change things. Michael Begley Tipperary Town Revitalisation Task Force Manager has been speaking to Sheila Naughton- she started by asking about this new scheme ...
The government is going to discuss the finance bill 2023 tomorrow as it enters its final stages and within that is the reduction of the excise of fuel – which will see us all paying more at the pumps from June onwards. The Rural Independent TDs are putting forward an amendment to legislation, in an effort to cap all energy taxes and effectively block to Government from bringing this in. TD Mattie McGrath says that it is another attack on people and industries in rural Ireland and also accused those who support the decision as ‘buying into the Government's hoax' Sheila Naughton spoke to Deputy McGrath about their amendment and the likelihood of its success tomorrow.
There has been alot of talk about the impact of the housing crisis and indeed the rising cost of living on people, but it appears this is having a knock on effect on our furry friends. Local Animal Rescue - The Haven Rescue based in Roscrea - has found it increasingly difficult to find homes in Ireland for dogs in their care. Their co-founder Rosie Dowling has been speaking to Sheila Naughton about the challenges they have faced, and why adoption is one of the best ways to ensure you get the right dog for your lifestyle. You can heart hear the full interview here.
This week over 500 young people who are part of Comhairle na nOg nationally gathered in Croke Park to talk about the issues facing young people. But, what are the concerns our local Comhairle members are addressing? Kaitlyn Kennedy is from Borrisokane and is the local Chair - she says that there are a number of areas they as a group are tackling in particular Climate Action, Mental Health, and LGBTQI+ rights. She spoke to Sheila Naughton about her work and involvement:
Today the 2023-2025 Presidential Macra count took place which means that shortly the 38th President John Keane will move on from the position. Despite being a South Laois man, he rose to the helm through his membership in the Tipperary club Devil's Bit. He says that his Dad will be glad to have someone back on hand to help with the milking but he is still hopeful other opportunities may arise. Sheila Naughton spoke to him today – and began by asking about his time in the organisation:
Over the weekend we reported that a section of road outside Tipp Town was closed following a collision between two cars. The road remained closed for a number of hours with significant damaged to both cars. This happed at Barronstown Cross a Junction which has been raised in recent times at a number of council meetings. David Moloney - a resident and member of the N24 Facebook campaign- spoke to Sheila Naughton about local concerns starting with the crash Sunday....
Today on the 5:45 - The eviction ban has been widely discussed at this stage by all sides of the political sphere in Ireland, however, away from politicking what is happening in Tipperary to try and make more accommodation available and actual house people? Novas aim is to provide a range of services and accommodation for marginalised households in Tipperary. Sheila Naughton heard from their Head of Advocacy and Communications Una Burns about what their work in the Premier County – and asked about their current project in Stradavoher in Thurles.
