Send us a textKay Hanley, the remarkable Emmy and Peabody award-winning songwriter, joins us for a candid conversation on embracing powerlessness and its profound impact on her life and career. From her pivotal decision to get sober in 2011, Kay opens up about how letting go of control has shaped her journey, particularly in her relationships. She shares the deeply transformative experience of surrendering in the face of personal challenges, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling way of living. Listen as Kay recounts the powerful shift that occurred when she stopped trying to manage everything around her, ultimately strengthening her bond with her daughter, who now follows her own path as a social worker.Navigating the complexities of relinquishing control, especially in the context of recovery, is no small feat. Kay delves into the emotional hurdles of allowing loved ones to carve their own paths and the universal struggle with uncertainty. Through heartfelt anecdotes, she offers insight into the creative process of shaping one's understanding of higher powers and embracing a power greater than oneself. This conversation encourages listeners to consider what the most loving version of themselves would do in moments of doubt, emphasizing the transformative power of patience, love, and kindness in decision-making.In the chaotic world of the music industry, maintaining emotional sobriety is both a challenge and a gift. Kay discusses the importance of physical sobriety in enhancing her performance and work ethic, enabling her to deliver high-energy shows while prioritizing her well-being. By breaking free from negative patterns and silencing the inner critic, she illustrates the journey towards self-compassion and growth. This episode is a thoughtful exploration of how embracing change and faking confidence, until it becomes genuine, can create a life truly worth living. Kay's insights offer a compassionate framework for overcoming personal struggles and forging a path towards self-acceptance and transformation.Support the show#thetruthaboutaddiction#sobriety#the12steps#recovery#therapy#mentalhealth#podcasts#emotionalsobriety#soberliving#sobermindset#spirituality#spiritualgrowth#aa#soberlife#mindfulness#wellness#wellnessjourney#personalgrowth#personaldevelopment#sobermovement#recoveroutloud#sobercurious#sobermoms#soberwomen#author#soberauthor#purpose#passion#perspective

Help! We're trapped inside our 200th episode and we can't get out!!! The celebration extravaganza continues into a second week with a fond look back at our favorite episodes — featuring a legion of special guests (both past and present) that includes Kelly Wey, Kyle Kinane, Jeff Murphy, Andy Gerber, Walter Schriefels, Tamar Berk, Michael Alago, Kay Hanley, Rick Ness, Rick Froberg, Blake Smith, Max Crawford, Jess Margera, John McCauley, Joe Bosso, Chip Z'Nuff, Justine, and Scott's dad. This one's a doozy!
“Here And Now” Letters To Cleo may seemed to have suddenly shown up on the pop culture landscape in 1994, but the fact is, the Boston outfit had been grinding it out on the club since 1990. Their single “Here and Now” was an instant classic—a melodic dose of perfect pop stomp that showcased singer Hanley's powerful vocal delivery. The band tore through the ‘90s, releasing three perfect albums (Aurora Gory Alice, Wholesale Meats And Fishes and Go), appeared as the house band in 10 Things I Hate About You, played SXSW, and playing with everyone from Cheap Trick to Neds Atomic Dustbin. Oh, and I almost forgot: In 1996, playing Mary Magladene, Hanley co-starred with Extreme's Gary Cherone in the Boston Rock Opera's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. In the early 2000's, Hanley was the singing voice for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie and the Pussycats and though the band called it a day that same year, they did record 15 new and original songs for the Kids' WB cartoon Generation O! That will become important in a second, but just to round out the corners here, Hanley toured as a back-up singer for Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana venture, put out a handful of great solo releases, sang the National Anthem at Gillette stadium for the Patriots and got to work on her new career, composing all-original songs for animated TV shows like Doc McStufins, DC Super Hero Girls, and Harvey Girls Forever, to name a few. How's that career going? Well, in 2022 Hanley won an Emmy for songwriting on We The People. So I'd say, not too shabby. On that front, she and her writing partners Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty and Charlton Pettus created Disney Jr.'s Kindergarten: The Musical and Hanley is also co-executive director of Songwriters of North America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songwriters_of_North_America), an LA-based non-profit which advocates for fair pay and other rights for songwriters. As for Letters to Cleo? Well, the band may no longer be a full-time concern, but they pop up here and there to play gigs. They just completed a mini-November tour and they have a show on Jan 9th in Madison at the Majestic. Get your tickets now. Well, listen to the show, THEN get your tickets. Or multi-task. One year ago last August, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds made history with “Subspace Rhapsody,” the franchise’s first musical episode. To celebrate the milestone Anthony and Laurie are joined by musicians Tom Polce and Kay Hanley, who wrote all the songs for the episode (and Laurie can hardly contain herself). They talk about what the songwriters were asked to do, how it changed along the way, and get into the details on each of the individual songs. Kay and Tom also talk about working with the actors, squeezing technobabble into song lyrics, and play a bit of an early demo. They answer burning questions like “Is Akiva serious when he says he wants to bring ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ to Broadway?” and “Who was the most nervous about doing a musical episode?”

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen complete their breakdown the Episode where we finally meet the Department of the Interior's resident "bad boy", Liam Bonneville! Leslie is in San Francisco, scheduled to speak at the National Parks Conference about the Pawnee/Eagleton merger. At the conference, Leslie bumps into Grant Larson, who invites her to lunch and introduces her to a number of her idols, including Michelle Obama. Grant tells a starstruck Leslie he needs a final decision from her by tomorrow, and after all this, Leslie is heavily leaning towards taking the job. Later, Leslie gives her speech at the conference, describing the Pawnee/Eagleton merger completing in 6-12 months, but her timeline is ridiculed by the audience, with two department heads suggesting the merger will need 10 years of constant hands-on management, or else risk her precious town losing its cityhood and becoming "unincorporated territory". Needless to say, this shakes Leslie to her core, and despite meeting her idols earlier, and how perfect this job seems ... she is now considering not taking it. Meanwhile, Tom's Bistro is set to open in 6 weeks, but when investor Mitch Savner mentions how great it would be for the restaurant to be ready in time for the Unity Concert, Tom jumps the gun and promises to have the place ready for a soft opening the next day, and be ready for officially opening at the end of the week. Tom desperately brings all hands on deck, recruiting April, Craig, Ron and Donna to help him get the restaurant serviceable. Things do not go well: Ron is unable to make 20 chairs in time, Craig is unable to do his job as sommelier due to sinus/allergy issues, and Jerry Gergich orders the menus with ... uh ... let's just say, the wrong background image. As the night goes on, Mitch becomes more and more concerned and upset with the way Tom is running things. Also meanwhile, Ben and Andy are also in San Francisco to meet with tech company "Gryzzl", who is giving away free Wi-Fi to a few cities across the US. Ben meets with them to pitch the idea of Pawnee being one of the cities. Unfortunately, they are only focusing on big cities, so they turn Ben down. After some time to think, Ben is determined to not take no for an answer, and goes back with Andy a 2nd time. This time, however, he sees a large group of Gryzzl employees - including the Gryzzl owners he spoke to in the first meeting - playing the board game HE invented. That's right ... they are playing "The Cones of Dunshire"! Finally, we witness the day we've all been waiting for ... the Unity Concert is here! April and Andy lead the final Unity Concert planning meeting, with a main goal of getting 2000 signatures in support of the Pawnee-Eagleton merger. Andy also tries one last time (unsuccessfully) to get Ron to play as Duke Silver during the concert. Later, we see the Unity Concert in full swing, with headline acts The Decemberists, Ginuwine, Letters to Cleo, Bobby Knight Ranger, and Land Ho bringing in huge crowds. Andy performs as Johnny Karate on the children's stage, and afterwards bumps into Burly. The two reminisce over Mouse Rat's break up and it brings back memories for Andy as he misses being a part of a band. On a similar note, Diane encourages Ron to get up on stage and have fun, but Ron has no intention of doing so. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Will Leslie take the job? Will Tom's investor, Mitch Savner, back out of the deal? How did Gryzzl get their hands on the Cones of Dunshire? Can Andy find a way to deal with the fact that he misses being in a band? Will Leslie move away from Pawnee? Could there be another opportunity for Tom's Bistro to be redeemed? Can Ben leverage the Cones of Dunshire to his advantage? Does Ron become convinced to play as Duke Silver at some point? Can Leslie find a way to have it all? Does Tom find a way to turn things around? Will Pawnee get free WiFi? Will the gang manage to collect 2000 signatures in support of the Pawnee-Eagleton merger? Loyal viewers, we MADE IT! We are at the END of Season 6! Can you even believe it?!? Will this 53 MINUTE extravaganza blow everything else out of the water? Tune in and find out! Many thanks to our sponsor Entertainment 720 and their award-hopeful film: "Identity Crisis: This is Mouse Rat."

Her latest animated project is Kindergarten The Musical, which she developed with writing partners Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty, and Charlton Pettus. She serves as composer and executive producer for the series, which will debut in Fall 2024 on Disney Junior. Ms. Hanley is co-founder of Songwriters Of North America (SONA), a non-profit advocacy organization that fights for the protection and value of songs and songwriters in the streaming music marketplace. As a result of her advocacy work, Hanley was chosen to represent songwriters on the Mechanical Licensing Collective, serving as vice-chair of the Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee. Continuing our ten week celebration of the 1980s, we have some silly artifacts to examine from 1981. First Kornflake brings us a couple of Dr Pepper commercials featuring David Naughton (from "Makin' It"), Mickey Rooney (from "One of the Boys"), and the classic two-person horse costume (from our dreams). Kevin's 1981 pick is a Superman comic book produced by Radio Shack to introduce the children to the wonders of the TRS-80 computer. (We're convinced. Here at Chickentown Studios, we're ditching our Commodore VIC-20 and upgrading to a TRS-80.) On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of women who were prominent in the ‘90s alternative rock scene, and whose bands followed similar paths: Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo and Louise Post of Veruca Salt. Our producer Myron Kaplan has been pushing to have Hanley as a guest for ages, and of course singing the praises of both Letters to Cleo and Hanley's solo work—plus letting me know that Hanley has had an incredible second musical career writing for children's TV shows, including popular shows like Doc McStuffins, for which she won a Peabody Award. Hanley also won a songwriting Emmy for her work on last year's animated series We The People. She's still rocking in Letters to Cleo, too, though the band was broken up for a good long while there—now they get together on occasion to make some noise and play a few shows every November. Sounds nice to me. Check out the song “Back to Nebraska“ right here. The other half of today's conversation is Louise Post, who was the co-frontperson of another ‘90s alt-rock titan, Veruca Salt. Together with her songwriting partner Nina Gordon, Post caused a huge stir back then, coming out of the gate (the gate being Chicago) with a ton of buzz and an incredible single called “Seether.” As you'll hear in this conversation, the machinations of the music biz caused some real strife, and Gordon left the band. Post soldiered on with some great Veruca Salt music before things fizzled, but there's a happy ending: Gordon returned in 2015 with the rest of the original lineup. And even better: Post has just released a firecracker of a solo album called Sleepwalker, which sounds grown up but still rocking in all the right ways. Check out “What About.” In this chat, Post and Hanley talk about the early days and seeing each other play; Hanley gushes over Post's new record, and they talk about living through that moment in the ‘90s alt-rock world when women were undeniably in the driver's seat. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kay Hanley and Louise Post for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the written goodness on this very website. This episode was produced by this week's special guest host Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Welcome to Season 3, Episode 2 of Song Chronicles. Our guest today is Michelle Lewis, an Emmy- and Peabody-winning songwriter and composer and an advocate of songwriters' rights as executive director of SONA. Michelle's parents were both musicians. Her dad was the tenor saxophone player in Frank Sinatra's band and her mom was a session singer who sang with the likes of Benny Goodman. Michelle talks about what it was like to tag along with her parents in the early seventies scene of working musicians in New York as "the little mascot of the cats." Michelle recording jingles as a kid After college, Michelle had a deal with Irving Azoff's Giant Records as a recording artist. Later her songs were recorded by other artists, including Cher, Amy Grant, Kelly Osbourne, and Lindsay Lohan. We talk about the invisibility of songwriters and the skill involved into distilling your life experience into words that can be sung by someone else, like a screenwriter writing for actors. More recently, Michelle has been a composer for children's television, including Doc McStuffins, for which she won a Peabody Award. She shares how writing for television lets her express a different range of creativity because it's not bound by genre. Michelle with her Peabody Award In 2015, Michelle had a cut on an album that sold millions of copies and yet she was paid a fraction of what her 2005 hit was worth. Learning how much streaming technology had devalued the work of songwriters, she got together with songwriters Shelly Peiken, Pam Sheyne, Kay Hanley, Adam Dorn, Jack Kugell, and attorney Dina LaPolt to form SONA, Songwriters of North America. SONA pushes for changes to legislation like the Music Modernization Act which updated how songwriters are paid mechanicals to reflect the streaming music landscape. Michelle breaks down the different sources of revenue for songwriters including mechanicals, performance royalties, publishing, and syncs. SONA meeting with Senator Edward Markey Michelle is a mentor with WriteGirl, an organization that provides free mentoring to girls interested in songwriting and other types of writing including poetry, fiction, journalism, and screenwriting. We talk about the experience of helping girls write their first songs and how their lives are changed after seeing their songs performed. Michelle shares a story about watching future National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman develop her voice in WriteGirl workshops. WriteGirl songwriting workshop Enjoy this conversation about the importance of the jobs of songwriters, who provide the soundtrack to our lives.
Josie & The Pussycats is a musical comedy film released in 2001, based on the Archie Comics series and Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name. The film starred Rachael Leigh-Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Alan Cumming, and Parker Posey, and was directed by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. The film followed the adventures of the eponymous band as they attempt to achieve and eventually navigate stardom, while a conspiracy involving subliminal messaging lurks in the backdrop. The film featured a soundtrack of original rock songs written by professional songwriters like Adam Schlesinger, Adam Duritz, and Anna Waronker, among others, and featured a vocal performance by Kay Hanley of the power pop band Letters To Cleo. Though not a hit upon its release, it has since gone on to become a cult favorite for its sharp satire of commercialism. On an all new Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott are joined by Kendra Beltran, writer for Collider, MTV Geek, and Cartoon Brew, as well as the host of the podcast Crushgasm. The three of them take in a screening of Josie & The Pussycats, debate the secret genius behind the film, shower praise upon MVP Alan Cumming, and REALLY work on their pronunciation....with Lilz and Scott!
Coming off the hit "Here and Now" from their debut Aurora Gory Alice, Letters To Cleo followed-up with the equally catchy Wholesale Meats and Fish. Lead single "Awake," with it's handclaps and catchy hook by lead singer Kay Hanley, is just one of many power-pop adjacent tunes that lean more towards the noisy side of the genre inhabited by The Posies and Matthew Sweet. But to pin down LTC would be a mistake, as the opening ripper "Demon Rock" demonstrates, or the sixties-infused "Little Rosa" demonstrate. The band packs a nice sonic punch, even when diverging from comfortable sounds for quieter moments that are hit and miss. Ellie was hanging out with a few of her friends when she overheard one of them talking about growing up with a sister who was in a famous rock band. Ellie said, "I didn't know this about you! Who is your sister?" Ellie then learned that her friend, Elizabeth Hanley-Grande, is the younger sister of Kay Hanley, lead singer of the band Letters to Cleo, whose hit single "Here and Now" was featured on the Melrose Place soundtrack and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Singles chart right around the time when Ellie was a senior in high school, making it one of her go-to rock anthems. Mind. Blown. Fast forward to the amazing idea to have our first ever SISTERS episode! We talk about what it was like growing up in a house with five women sharing one bathroom, having a mother who was very scientific about the body but very Catholic about premarital sex, and whether one's menopausal journey does or does not mirror that of one's sisters. We also touch on aging in the music industry, firing your doctors when they are crap, and how it's possible to NEVER see your sister's boobs. Listen to this episode and then go listen to Kay's music. Your earholes will be so happy. We're creeping into the holiday season with a concert report, because Boston rock heroes Letters to Cleo are back for their annual homecoming shows. This year they brought along super-cool Brooklyn-based band Thick to open the show, and Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley is clearly a fan. Throw in a surprise Cleo horn section, and a festive time was had by all. We're also looking ahead at the goofiness of the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. This year's balloons include the Pillsbury Doughboy, Baby Yoda, and (thanks to recent exposure here on The Flopcast, we assume) Smokey Bear. There's also a giant acorn balloon, because why not. And if you've been secretly hoping for a bread-themed parade float, with hundreds of giant foam bread slices rising into the sky, this is your year. Welcome to a very special Flopcast, because for the first time in almost three years, Kevin and Kornflake are together in person! We're not on Zoom! It's a weird outdoor recording session on a chilly October night up north at Chickentown Outpost! But we have coffee, so it's just like old times. Including: National Decorate a Cake Day (which we celebrate by devouring a couple of boozy cupcakes), another monster cereal review from Matt (this time it's Boo Berry part 1 - more next week), the official presentation of all the Flopcast badge ribbons Kornflake has missed since 2020 (so much Potsie Panic), a concert report on Letters to Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley (strangely including thousands of Lizzo fans), Kevin's big plan to lose a half marathon, Kornflake's remarkable quest for the perfect lobster roll, and our visit to a giant outer space-themed light show (we were just looking for Robolar from Mars). Okay, that was about enough human interaction for now, so next week, it's back to Zoom... The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! Singer/Songwriter Kay Hanley had hits with her band Letters to Cleo in the 1990's and went on to create music for TV and film as well as pen articles for Variety, Esquire and Billboard. She stops by to perform two songs and talk about her career and influences.
It stands to reason — the longer you stay in the game of writing and performing music, the older your audience gets. But Kay Hanley's audience has only gotten younger. She went from pumping out the catchiest Cheap Trick influenced alterna-pop for the alterna-kids of the ‘90s in her band Letters To Cleo — to entertaining the kids of THOSE kids writing songs for shows such as “Doc McStuffins” and “DC Superhero Girls”. Along the way, she's managed to maintain a stellar solo career — and the debut entry in that career (“Cherry Marmalade”) just happens to turn 20 this year. So she's doing what we all do: Putting that shit out on vinyl and hitting the road. We've known Kay for a long time and there's nobody cooler. On this episode we forget to talk about Josie And The Pussycats, Hannah Montana, and Adam Scott — but we REMEMBER to talk about “10 Things I Hate About You”, Heath Ledger, Mike Denneen, her work with the Songwriters of North America (a foundation she co-founded, by the way), baseball, covering each other's songs, football, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, growing up across the street from the Wahlbergs, “Melrose Place”, Barry Manilow, and REAL football! We also put Kay's Rain Man-like ability for remembering lyrics to the Elvis Costello test.
The guys are joined by Kay Hanley (of Letters to Cleo fame, solo, and plenty of other stuff) to discuss the 1990 classic “Heaven or Las Vegas” from the Cocteau Twins. Plenty of other discussion including Tacoma and “10 Things I Hate About You”, working in animated shows, the “Marmalade” remaster (coming soon to vinyl!), Boston Red Sox, Purple Rain (and Prince samples a song on this album), speaking in Druid, songs about babies, and lots of questions including “what are the song titles again” & “wait…did I seriously put it at a 9” and “Wayne, this is your favorite song?” Check out Kay Hanley at: http://www.kayhanley.com/Check out Cocteau Twins at: https://cocteautwins.com/Check out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Castbox, iHeartMedia, Google Podcasts and Spotify. Somewhere around 1994, most of us found ourselves trying to decipher and sing-along to the rapid-fire chorus from vocalist Kay Hanley in "Here and Now" by Letters To Cleo. Decades later, I find myself fortunate enough to sit down with the Boston band's frontwoman on Waterproof Records to talk about her impressive career in music as a songwriter, performer, and the specific album that changed Kay's life for the better.

Welcome to the Unity Concert! We’ve finally made it and my, what a wonderful show. This Parks and Rec episode is chock full of guest appearances, like Ginuwine, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo, The Decemberists, Jon Hamm, Johnny Karate, and a whole lot more. And we’re all partying at Tom’s Bistro after the show.Meanwhile, Leslie is looking for people to take with her to her new job as the head of the Midwest branch of the National Park Service. Ron is disinterested because the government, April hates people and Leslie (but also loves her). Andy briefly agrees after forgetting that he can also get pizza in Pawnee. And of course Larry is game! The end of this episode also flashes forward three years into the future, which is wild.Plus, the proper footwear if you’re participating on the Floor is Lava, how some people only have one karaoke song they ever sing, and the longevity of the Power Rangers as both a show and video game. This week Jess and Bowie chat with Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo. Letters to Cleo emerged from the Boston rock scene in the early 90’s, having released three full length albums during their time together. You would recognize Letters to Cleo from the soundtracks to movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You, The Craft, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and more. You would also recognize Kay as the singing voice of Josie from the movie Josie and The Pussycats! We’re thrilled to have Kay on the podcast as we chat about her start with LTC, her experience on set of filming 10 Things I Hate About You, and her post-band career writing songs for shows on Disney, Cartoon Network, Netflix, and more! www.babesbehindthebeats.com Instagram: @babesbehindthebeats Twitter: @babesbehindbeat The post Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo first appeared on idobi Network.
While the 90s were dominated by the touring festival as opposed to the current day destination festival, the first half and second half had decidedly different approaches. Lollapalooza took a variety of artists from across genres with the intention of exposing artists across differing fanbases, whereas the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. Tour, and Lilith Fair each narrowed their focus. In the case of Lilith Fair, the simplistic history is that it was a female-centric folk tour, headlined by the likes of Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, and Sheryl Crow. In reality, over the course of three years, the festival provided a much broader spectrum of female artists, including Queen Latifah, Bonnie Raitt, Letters To Cleo, Liz Phair, Dance Hall Crashers, K's Choice, Luscious Jackson, Nenah Cherry, The Pretenders, Missy Elliott, The Cardigans, Susanna Hoffs, Juliana Hatfield, and many many more. To help us revisit we invited back a pair of performers (Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo and Jill Cuniff of Luscious Jackson) and a pair of attendees (friend of the show Matt Shiverdecker and show announcer Katie Minneci), along with special call-in guests performer Tracy Bonham and attendee John Cornish. Songs In This Episode: Intro - Angel (Live) by Sarah McLachlan with Emmylou Harris 17:20 - Naked Eye (Live) by Luscious Jackson 24:49 - Surrounded (Live) by Chantal Kreviazuk 34:05 - The One (Live) by Tracy Bonham & telephone interview 41:27 - Not An Addict (Live) by K's Choice & memories with John Cornish Outro - Here And Now (Live) by Letters To Cleo Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. LIST-A-RAMA-A-GO-GO: "A missed opportunity to talk about Sponge." (1992-1995) When it comes to pop culture, Bob and Tim are completists. Be it thirteen un-carded Dreaknok figures or Louise Simonson's run on X-Factor their collections are always the full body of work. Well, almost always, as there was a moment in the mid 90s when they fell hard for some albums without following the artists. About a year ago we had the great opportunity to speak with Baseball Writer’s hall of famer and longtime musician Mr. Peter Gammons at his annual event celebrating the Peter Gammons College Scholarship. This scholarship, which allows Boston and Chicago area high school students a cash scholarship to the college of their choice has sent 150 Boston and Chicago area students to college by awarding them over $600,000 in scholarships. But this wonderful foundation is only one piece of the puzzle – just one beneficiary of many in Boston and Chicago under the umbrella of the Foundation To Be Named Later. After Theo Epstein became the general manager of the Red Sox in 2002, being a guitar player himself, Peter Gammons asked Theo to join him onstage for the next Hot Stove event. And so the Foundation to be named later was born. The foundation – now celebrating its 20thyear, is dedicated to improving lives through education and leadership and works to raise funds and awareness for nonprofit agencies serving urban youth and families. Funds would be raised through unique events focused on baseball and music, two of the twins’ passions. This years events begin February 7th. It's an extra-goofy show, because we're recording from separate remote locations, AND our recording equipment keeps malfunctioning! But we're here anyway, just for you. And this random catch-up sort of show features: Joe Cool vs. Mr. Cool; Star Wars burlesque; stand-up comedy with Dana Gould, Bobcat Goldthwait, and friends; Queen Jessica Mercy at the Watch City Steampunk Festival; our ESO Network boss visiting New England to check up on us; a rare solo show from Letters to Cleo frontwoman (and our favorite singer) Kay Hanley; the Speak Up storytelling podcast live in Connecticut; burritos and benefits in Rhode Island; Kornflake's rain-soaked 5K walk; and Kevin and Brittany (of Good Enough Cosplay) reporting live from their weird 5K run. (But was it really 5K?) Enjoy, as we all collapse in exhaustion.

This Friday on Kyle Meredith With…, Kyle Meredith speaks with three major guests about the albums they released in 1993 and what they’ve been up to since then. Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde discusses the importance of Latinx art, the anniversary of Mexican Moon, and her thoughts on art as existing in the eye of the beholder. Letters to Cleo’s Kay Hanley shares hints about what new music we might expect from the band and what it’s like composing music for Doc McStuffins, and Matthew Sweet explores his two recent records and his upcoming vinyl-only album. Kevin and Kornflake ring in the holidays with our favorite 90s Boston band, Letters to Cleo! (You may recall their hit song "Here and Now," or their appearances in 10 Things I Hate About You and Parks and Recreation, or singer Kay Hanley's vocals for Josie and the Pussycats... or if you don't know them, look them up. You're welcome.) We were in the front row for Letters to Cleo's holiday homecoming shows (both of them!), and have a full report, including: Dangerously close guitar solos! Surprise guests! Opening band American Hi-Fi! Kay Hanley approving of Kevin's shirt! No one approving of Kornflake's weird coffee! (Not even Kornflake!) It was a festive time, and you should all join us next year. Bring ear plugs. Also: Thanksgiving Spam-juggling, running with lobsters and dogs, mason jars of moonshine, and a Flopcast holiday tradition... The Figgy Pudding Pages.

Episode 16: Grail (Season 1, Episode 15)Synopsis: In which a seeker comes to the station on a legendary quest and ends up inspiring others to great deeds. And at the end of the day there is a lack of boom.David Warner is a goddamn legend. There's no other way to say it. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001831/?ref_=tt_cl_t126:55 - that's Chris's cat Max yelling in the background. He does that now and then for absolutely no good reason. The timing was just too perfect to the conversation to edit it out.The proper pronunciation is “Rahj-al-gool” not “Rayj-al-gool.” I will brook no dissent in this matter, regardless of how wonderful your abs might be, Mr. Amell. David Icke is a proponent of a theory that an alien race of shape-shifting reptoids (who may or may not be from the center of the earth, I may be conflating my crackpots there) has infiltrated the highest levels of human society, perhaps most notably the British monarchy. I believe the technical term for him is “nutter.”But this, and the alien abduction court case in the episode, allows me to include this picture of my favorite Centauri: Jerry Doyle hosted The Jerry Doyle Show on the Talk Radio Network from 2012 until his death in 2016.Navratan Korma is a delicious northern Indian curry made with various vegetables, fruits and nuts in a golden sauce, and not an alien species that sucks away life force. Probably.Third Stage Guild Navigator: Tor Johnson was one of the stars of Ed Wood's gloriously terrible Plan 9 from Outer Space. Much like the Loch Ness Monster and various Bigfoot encounters, the story of the Marie Celeste occupied a huge chunk of my mental real-estate in the 1970s, thanks to too many hours of watching In Search Of. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_CelesteWilliam Sanderson is nearly peak-level character actor. He pops up everywhere, and places that he doesn't you *think* he's there. Chris swears he was in Westworld but apparently not. Conflating with Deadwood perhaps?http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0761836/?ref_=tt_cl_t13Christy Marx (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christy_Marx), the writer of this episode and creator of Jem & the Holograms (the live-action film of Jem apparently came out in 2015, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3614530/?ref_=nv_sr_1)Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends ran from 1981 to 1983 and inexplicably teamed the wall-crawler with former X-Man Iceman and newly created character Firestar. June Foray was the voice of Aunt May, but despite this the show was somehow really, really terrible. We had a fairly long discussion about the 2001 Josie and the Pussycats film which had to be cut because of problems with Chris's mic, but do check it out. Solid fun and an AMAZING soundtrack, with Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo doing the vocals for the Josie songs, and it should definitely NEVER be confused with Spice World. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236348/?ref_=nv_sr_1
On this episode, we're talking with Kay Hanley, frontwoman of '90s alternative rock act Letters to Cleo, about the band's work in films like 10 Things I Hate About You and the Craft. We also discuss Hanley's work as the singing double for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie & the Pussycats.
Welcome to Voices and Visions, formerly Pop Culture Club. Confused? Well, there’s an introduction to help assist you. As you may or may not know, PCC is now V&V, and this is the first official episode under the new name. After my 8-minute monologue at the top, I am pleased to present another wonderful singer/songwriter by the name of Kay Hanley. If you’ve heard of the band Letters to Cleo, she is the incredibly energetic frontwoman and has always been a true blue rock star in my eyes. For movie fans, you’ll also know her as the singing voice of Josie in the hysterical satire JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS with Rachael Lee Cook, Parker Posey, and Alan Cumming. In addition, Kay is a songwriter for hire and has recently released a new EP with Letters to Cleo. I had the pleasure of meeting with her at the VIP show in Chicago and a couple months later, we reconnected over the phone to have a delightful conversation about her career, loss, inspiration, working in film, and what we can potentially expect from Letters to Cleo in the future. I truly hope you enjoy this episode since this is precisely the kind of show I will be offering as of 2017 on what I hope to be a weekly basis. A trio of festive concert reports this week: Kornflake journeyed to a casino in the middle of Rhode Island and finally saw The Monkees (parking was tricky, but the view of Peter Tork was outstanding); meanwhile, Kevin and the Mayor were in Boston for the long-awaited return of Letters to Cleo (for the record, Kay Hanley remains our favorite singer in the universe); and once again we dodged flying undergarments at Niki Luparelli's annual David Bowie tribute concert and burlesque show. We also celebrate the 100th birthday of Mr. Peanut (the secret of eternal youth -- wear a top hat, a monocle, and nothing else), and remind everyone to appreciate ninjas. Especially coffee ninjas.
Kay Hanley and Michael Eisenstein of Letters to Cleo join Eric in conversation for a deep dive career retrospective. We talk about their early days, the formation of the band, the indy scene of Boston, their major label records, thoughts on their appearance in 10 Things I Hate About You, opening for Cheap Trick but most importantly we talk about their NEW EP Back to Nebraska and what's next!
