Today marks International Day of Mathematics and concerns are growing about declining participation in mathematics in South African schools. Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, recently warned about fewer learners choosing maths and physical science. More than 400 high schools across the country did not offer mathematics to Grade 12 learners in 2025, partly because there were not enough pupils interested to make a class viable. Gauteng Transport MEC, Kedibone Dialle Thlabela says every road user is bound by the rules of the country's roads and the private scholar transport operators are no exception. Thlabela was speaking during a government operation which led to the impoundment of over 60 unroadworthy, unlicensed and overloaded scholar transport vehicles in the south of Johannesburg. The operation comes as 14 Gauteng families prepare to lay their children to rest after their scholar transport vehicle attempted to overtake a number of cars before colliding with a truck earlier this week. Die Vrystaat het die beste gevaar met 91-persent, teenoor 89-persent in 2023. KwaZulu-Natal is tweede met 'n slaagsyfer van 89,5-persent en Gauteng is derde met 85,4-persent.
