Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

We have a really accomplished young woman on the podcast today, with Kim Shoop, or Gator, sharing her story about section hiking the entire Triple Crown in just eight years. She has a very self-deprecating way about her, yet she is clearly a determined person to be able to achieve multiple long hikes, having to start again and again to fulfill her dream. Fully in love with backpacking, Kim also decided that the Palmetto Trail needed a bit more information than was publicly available, so she put together a website of her own to help out. You can find it at http://Blazzardk.wixsite.com/palmettotrail. Kim is also active on YouTube, with her channel, I Hike Marathons. Another completion for a Mighty Blue Class of 24 member, with David Vose checking in on his way down from the summit of Katahdin. His picture below says it all. Then, Sondra Lee, or Lemonade continues southward, leaving Virginia and chatting with me from Uncle Johnny's in Erwin, TN. Our new book reading, Happy Hiking, by my friend, Emily Leonard is–of course–written from a woman's POV and a woman's voice. I hope you enjoy listening to my reading of it. If you'd like to buy the book, you can find it on Amazon at Happy Hiking: Falling in love on the Appalachian Trail, or on Emily's website, at Happy Hiking. I used my recent hike in the UK on the South West Coast Path to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Dr Daniel Warren is our guest this week, with a subject very close to the heart of a hiker; Lyme Disease. I try my best to pick his brain and learn a little bit more about this pernicious disease, which is on the rise throughout the country. He sent me several papers to inform my questions, so I believe that you'll gain a lot from our conversation. If you have any questions about this conversation, email me at steve@hikingradionetwork.com and I'll forward your question to Daniel. Sondra Lee, or Lemonade is headed south, having modified her thru-hike attempt, though still with her eye very much on the prize. Meanwhile, Bobby Campbell, or Sloggy, continues to learn about himself, calling us from the top of Mt Washington. Between those two, Bruce Matson, or RTK, pops in to share some news of his own. Check out The Wood's Hole Weekend to find out more. If you have any questions about the weekend, reach out directly to Bruce at rtkchallenge@gmail.com. What gives you joy, a sense of profound pleasure? What tickles your fancy and makes you feel like you’re in the midst of a magic moment? The sources and varieties of pleasure for the women we interview never cease to enlighten and inspire us. What we love, especially, is the way the old bitches we talk to describe the deep pleasure they experience from what is easily available: laughing over nothing with a friend, a glimpse at the sky while you’re working, a memory of the first symphony you ever heard. Maybe you’re an ecstasy junkie or a wild disruptor who loves challenging what people expect from ‘an old bitch’ or you’re discovering renewal with the Mona Lisa method? Find your sisters here in this compilation episode. Listen to find out about joining the 'better, deeper, more' club and to take the Two Old Bitches vow: What else is there but pleasure? "I’m someone who’s very lucky. I didn’t come from anything fancy. I’ve always been determined to do whatever it was I should be doing. There’s nothing in the arts that I haven’t attempted. I’m still at it." At 86, Sondra Lee is simply unstoppable.  At 16, she stormed a Broadway theater after auditions were over and landed not only a part but a lifelong friend, Jerome Robbins. Robbins was the one one who cast her as the original Tiger Lily in Peter Pan, an unforgettable performance on the stage and television. Over the years, her career expanded to directing, teaching and coaching, as well as painting and sculpting. Whether she is reflecting on her friendship and affair with Marlon Brando or sharing insights about feminist organizing in New York City in the 1970s, her skill as a storyteller makes each aspect of her fascinating life a lesson in standing up for yourself, following your dreams, and kindness. Sondra’s first memoir, I’ve Slept with Everybody, introduces us to the legions of well-known people she’s known and loved. Her upcoming book – As I Was Saying – will tell her fans even more. Today's Guest: Philippe Quint, virtuoso violinist, actor, Downtown Express Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of knuckleheads who don’t know a violin from violette… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Virtuoso violinist Philippe Quint stars in 'Downtown Express,' a new indie film that has parallels to the Russian immigrant's real life. Let me see. The last time I stopped what I was doing to listen a world class violinist was… Okay, it hasn’t happened yet. But after watching Philippe Quint move gracefully between classic violin and pop-jazz in David Grubin’s new indie film Downtown Express, it is definitely more likely to happen in the future. PHILIPPE QUINT audio excerpt: "I have great respect for the craft of acting. So when I was cast in Downtown Express, I took acting lessons with a wonderful teacher, Sondra Lee. She really trained me while the film was in pre-production. It was extremely beneficial."  Order from Amazon.com by clicking the CD cover above Downtown Express stars Quint – who is a four-time Grammy Award nominee for his violin virtuosity – as a Russian immigrant struggling to balance his love and respect for his domineering father with his desire to be part of Manhattan’s much broader musical melting pot. That, and, of course, there’s a love story, as his character, Sasha, meets and plays alongside funky Ramona, played by another accomplished real-life musician, Nellie McKay. This is an irresistible movie that magically melds the Julliard School of Music, Russian immigrant society, American jazz and classical music and not one but two romantic stories. I especially recommend it for inspiration if you have kids studying music in high school or college.
