Ten weeks ago Joe Biden was still the Democratic candidate for president and Donald Trump was…well…still Donald Trump (and he's only become a more extreme version of himself since).Yet somehow, these two — one, a decent career civil servant, the other a loathsome career self-servant — were neck-and-neck in polling. And Democrats were losing their shit.It was then, in mid-May, that The New Republic magazine convened a group of academics, lawyers, journalists, activists, politicians and pundits in Philadelphia for their Stop Trump Summit. It was at once illuminating and comforting for an audience desperate to be talked off the ledge if only for that one afternoon. The event's theme song might well have been “How Do You Solve a Problem Like The Donald?”Now that Kamala Harris is the presumptive nominee, it is still worth revisiting that event, because it wasn't so much about Biden as about the other guy. And though Biden's handoff and Harris's launch have gone off fairly smoothly and met with tremendous early enthusiasm, the problem of Trump, like a bad case of impetigo, persists. Panels ranged from the threats to democracy posed by a second Trump administration (who only this week promised "my beautiful Christians" that if they voted him in it would be the last time they'd ever have to vote), to the impact of the Dobbs decision, to voter registration strategies. Among the speakers: PA State Senator Vincent Hughes, and podcaster and pundit Molly Jong-Fast.Thanks for listening! Now follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Welcome to the Shawn Bolz Show where we look at current events, the entertainment world, and what is happening around the globe from a Christian discerning perspective that hopefully inspires you to keep looking for what God is doing in the midst of what is going wrong. Today we'll explore the unique phenomenon of the war on Trump, pondering how it's shaping his unprecedented popularity despite facing significant criticism. We'll also take a look at Biden's numbers and reflect on what they reveal about his political journey. Next, let's unravel the enigma of Russell Brand. Despite his recent water baptism and commitment to Christianity, he continues to intrigue with his diverse interests, including a recent tarot reading. We'll ponder the complexities of his spiritual journey, perhaps echoing the sentiments of "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" Lastly, I'll share a prophetic perspective on recognizing God's manifest presence or anointing in your life. This isn't just for ministers; it's a concept deeply rooted in Biblical history, where God empowered ordinary individuals to accomplish extraordinary feats. Understanding and embracing this divine anointing is key to fulfilling your dreams and purpose. Tune in for all this and more on today's episode! Two of these indictments — Special Prosecutor Jack Smith's in D.C. and District Attorney Fani Willis's Fulton County, Georgia — take up Trump's and his co-conspirators efforts to steal the 2020 election, efforts that culminated with the insurrection on January 6. In this episode, Matt and Sam try to make sense of them and weigh the possible risks and rewards of "breaking the seal" and criminally charging a former president. In particular, they give closes readings to the two January 6-related indictments and discuss what they reveal about the deranged efforts Trump and his team made to overturn the election and a Republican Party that seemed to mostly go along with it, along with some of the problems with the RICO statute Trump and others are being charged under in Georgia. And of course, these indictments came down just as we're entering presidential election season — how will Trump's legal problems effect the 2024 race?Sources:Charlie Savage and Adam Goldman, "The Trump Jan. 6 Indictment, Annotated," NYT, Aug 1, 2023Alan Feuer, et al, "The Trump Georgia Indictment, Annotated," NYT, Aug 15, 2023Charlie Savage, "The Four Trump Criminal Cases: Strengths and Weaknesses," NYT, Aug 28, 2023James Risen, "In Trump's Georgia Indictment, a Tale of Two Election Workers," The Intercept, Aug 17, 2023Rick Rojas and Sean Keenan, "Dozens of ‘Cop City' Activists Are Indicted on Racketeering Charges," NYT, Sept 5, 2023Laurence Tribe, "Anatomy of a Fraud," Just Security, Aug 8, 2023Matthew Sitman, "Will Be Wild," Dissent, Spring 2023Damon Linker, "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Trump?" Jonathan Fessenden, theologian and editor of Missio Dei, and I discussed this ancient and supremely interesting book on his podcast. The Book of Job is one of the oldest poems in our tradition. It is a joy to read and a puzzle to wonder about: why does God allow—even provoke—the Accuser to destroy Job's life and test his faith? Damon Linker is an idiosyncratic figure among political writers—trained by Straussians as a political philosopher, he's a former editor of First Things, the flagship publication for intellectual religious conservatives, who broke with that publication over the Iraq War (among other things) and is now a self-described centrist. He's also a longtime friend of the podcast, who recently started his own attempt to grapple with what's happening in the GOP and among conservatives, a Substack newsletter he titled Eyes on the Right. In this conversation, Matt and Sam talk with Linker about what his own trajectory can teach us about the Right: his experiences working at First Things while the Bush administration was gearing up to invade Iraq; why thinks Sarah Palin marked a turning point on the Right; and his case for understanding Donald Trump as a political, rather than legal, problem. “it was her plot as much as mine” [ABBE] From the realm of conjecture: what if the star-crossed lovers in "The Adventure of Abbey Grange" and "The Problem of Thor Bridge" weren't simply victims of circumstance? What if the damsels in distress weren't being unfairly persecuted? That is, what if they plotted the demise of the hated member of their love triangle and were able to fool Sherlock Holmes? It's just a Trifle. Have you left us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts yet? You don't need to own an Apple device, and every review helps more people find the show. How Do You Solve a Problem Like World Vaccination? Here in the U.S., it feels as if we’ve turned a corner in the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the population can be vaccinated, and restrictions for masks and distancing are loosening. But we won’t be able to get a handle on the pandemic until the rest of the world has access to a vaccine. If you thought distributing shots to rural areas here in the U.S. was hard, imagine distributing them to every corner of the globe. President Joe Biden this week pledged to send an additional 20 million vaccine doses abroad, bringing the total promised to 80 million. But the U.S. is hardly the only country that plans to share doses. So where does the world vaccination effort stand? One international effort, led by organizations including the World Health Organization and UNICEF, is called COVAX, or COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access. Joining Ira to discuss this effort is implementation team member Dr. Bruce Aylward, senior advisor to the Director-General at the World Health Organization. Ira also speaks to medical supply chain expert Prashant Yadav, senior fellow at the Center for Global Development and professor at the INSEAD Business School, based in Washington, D.C. Can A New Vaccine Put An End To Malaria? The World Health Organization estimates that every two minutes, a child somewhere in the world dies of malaria. As of 2018, the parasite-induced disease kills a total of more than 400,000 people every year—most of them children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa. While the quest for a malaria vaccine is more than 50 years old, there is still no licensed, fully approved option. The closest to approval, called RTS,S, is being piloted in several countries, with efficacy estimates hovering around 56 percent. But after a new vaccine, called R21, demonstrated more than 75% efficacy in a small trial in Burkina Faso, is there hope for a more efficient push to reduce the global burden of malaria? Ira talks to malaria vaccine researcher Prakash Srinivasan and Biden administration malaria coordinator Raj Panjabi about the implications of a vaccine milestone—and the work remaining ahead. Plus, how the COVID-19 pandemic might inform future progress in global health. Zombie Wildfires Can Rage On For Months Wildfires are becoming more intense. California saw a record breaking wildfire season—burning 4 million acres across the state last year. Scientists say there is an increase in another type of wildfires called “zombie wildfires.” Forest fires that ignite in the summer and pop back up during the spring. Roxanne Khamsi talks about a new study that tracks the occurrence and causes of these wildfires. Plus, a look at a “black fungus” infection COVID-19 patients in India.

Don Futterman, Noah Efron and Times of Israel Ops & Blogs Editor Miriam Herschlag discuss three topics of incomparable importance and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Listen to the Extra-Special, Special Extra Segment on Patreon —“Unity is the Thing We Seek”— Opposition leader Yair Lapid says he wants a right-left-and-center “National Unity Government.” The fact that it won’t be able to do anything about the occupation is a feature, he says, not a bug. Does he have a point? —How Do You Solve a Problem Like Ben Gvir?— Kahanist MK Itamar Ben Gvir represents an outlook that most Israelis find loathsome. Is it better to fight him, or just ignore him? —Hip Like Us— Does what we Israelis wear tell us something about who we are? —Mask-Free and Prosper— For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra discussion, we talk about this strange pandemical moment, after the mask mandate was rescinded this week, when things seem to be opening up both higgledy and piggledy, which moment feels both like a resurrection – We hath risen! — and also maybe like a prologue to a setback down the road. It’s weird, so we talk about it. All that and the great first record of Minus Efes!

Times of Israel Ops & Blogs Editor Miriam Herschlag, Wunderkind Ohad Zeltzer-Zubida and Noah Efron discuss three topics of incomparable importance and end with an anecdote about something in Israel that made them smile this week. —How Do You Solve a Problem Like Rav Kanievsky?— Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox kids are going each day to schools that are required by law to be closed, in maybe the biggest act of civil disobedience in Israel’s history. What’s the government to do? —Skin in the Game?— Race, ethnicity, peoplehood, nationality, religion: How do these things fit together in today’s Israel? —Anything But Apathy— Can a $678 embroidered hoodie with dropped shoulders and panelled long sleeves help bring peace to Israelis and Palestinians? —Is There Something Unique About Antisemitism on Social Media?— For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra discussion, we talk about an essay in the forward by Joel Swanson called, “Facebook has banned Holocaust denial. But what about other genocides?”, and ask more generally, is there something unique and sui generis about antisemitism on social media. All that and songs from Shlomi Shabat and family and friends!

Captain Marvel is set to premiere, and with it, the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins. So why are so many fans convince that Brie Larson hates white men, and review-bombing the movie on Rotten Tomatoes? For that matter, why are people who are actually excited for the amazing-looking movie allowed to leave reviews when none of these people have seen the movie? Kind of kills your credibility, RT - maybe wait until it's possible that some of these people have actually seen the film, and developed an opinion rather than a bizarre conspiracy theory? I'm just saying. Meanwhile, there's been some speculation - which, after a few hours, is of course being reported all across the internet as fact - which I actually do find interesting. It involves Captain Marvel and a nasty encounter with Rogue of the X-Men, which happened in the comics and which will be possible soon as Disney completes its takeover of Fox. I actually think there might be something to this, and if not there should be - it's a neat idea. Also check out my appearance on a terrific podcast, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Mariah. Welcome back, fam! We ended up with so much to say about 104 and 105 that we split this podcast into two sections, one for each episode, to keep from making our heads explode with editing craziness. So you’ll notice that this one kind of ends abruptly without an outro, and the next one will start right in without an intro, but like I TRUST THAT WE’LL ALL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER. Anyway, please join us for the rollercoaster ride of “Murphy’s Law,” for our money the first truly great episode of this show. Charlotte! Nygel! Murphy! Vera! Raven! Flarke sex! The legacy of Wells! This week, Jordan and Matthias are joined by Twitter gadfly (weather geek, election geek, LOTR geek) Brendan LoyTerrible Opinions - 3:00 - 19:00Brendan - Brendan loves the schlocky patriotic country songs that they play at political rallies. Matthias - Researchers should be allowed federal money unless they can describe their research to a normal person in 2 sentences. Jordan - Jordan likes it when Christmas starts before Thanksgiving, prefers that Christmas season start as early as possible.Syrian Refugee Crisis - 19:00 - 42:00The big topic on Paradox today is the Syrian Refugee crisis. Brendan notes that he's open to a refugee pause but feels the anti-refugee rhetoric has moved to a dark place that we'll be ashamed of in later years. We talk a great deal about how the religious test for refugees and the nature of how to balance security against compassion and American exceptionalism. Wide agreement that cheap shots from the Obama administration are hurting the refugee movement more than helping it.How Do You Solve a Problem Like Free Speech? - 42:00 -Jordan catches us up on the ongoing fallout from the Mizzou protests, including resignation requests, alienating non-political students, and protests that hurt the cause more than helping it. Matthias predicts that this form of political activism will eat itself alive. Brendan calls for caution when addressing academic protests, noting that there is often much about the situation that we nHow Much Should Studios Tolerate Spoilers in Trailers? - 53:00Brendan recounts his frustration about watching The Martian, noting that the trailers gave away so much that he felt he already knew what was going to happen during the whole movie. Matthias notes how spoilers have changed viewing patters and how Netflix has managed to short-circuit the world of Twitter spoilers with their "all episodes at once" strategy.Predictions - 1:01Jordan: Trump will not will the primaryBrendan: Lists his prediction of who will drop out of the presidential race. This list runs: Pataki, Paul, Gilmore, O'Malley, Bush, Santorum, Huckabee, Christie, Kkasich, Graham, Fiorina, Carson, Trump, Sanders, Cruz, Making Marco Rubio the nominee.Matthias: Star Wars will be the biggest opening day ever and people will generally enjoy it (but not overwhelmingly love it).
With Thanksgiving upon us, you might expect the Screeners to take a couple leisurely weeks off, much like your favorite late-night shows, but they’re having none of it. Hollywood’s releasing blockbusters at the end of November, so they’re here to deconstruct them...after Jump Cuts, of course. How Do You Solve a Problem Like...Christmas?The holidays have arrived, so we might as well enjoy them in the lightning round. Chris starts us off by soliciting the Screeners’ favorite holiday movies. They manage to come up with almost entirely different lists, and Josh has even seen a couple of the movies on them. Christmas miracles do exist! And speaking of classic holiday joy, NBC is bringing back the Christmas musical. Except instead of finding the next Bing Crosby, they’ve cast Carrie Underwood to star in a revival of the stage version of The Sound of Music. We’re going to go ahead and assume that everyone’s first reaction is a bewildered, “Wait...what?” But could it work? From red and green all the way to noir: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are slated to work together on one of DC’s upcoming film properties. Unfortunately, they’re only signed up as producers, and the superhero star for this one is Sleeper. “Who?”Yeah, that’s what we said. Finally, a moment of silence for television. That’s right. Cable companies are seeing their subscriber rolls decline, and people are even dropping broadband plans in some areas. The graphs are undeniable, but what does this actually mean for the industry? Who better to make semi-informed prognostications than the Screeners?Consider the Fire CaughtThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire is officially the highest-grossing November movie of all time. In a season usually dedicated to a slate of somewhat artsy movies, Hollywood has gambled on a teen-targeted blockbuster, and it’s paid off so far, at least in ticket sales. What does this say for the fall movie season, though...and, more importantly, what can the Screeners find to argue about in the story of Katniss’ sacrificial love and courage? We’re betting there’s something…The Screeners Cross-promotion ExtravaganzaFor this episode’s Cutting Room Floor, the Screeners welcome their first-ever celebrity guest. Author RG Triplett joins the fray to talk about his new project, the Epic of Haven trilogy. The first book, The Great Darkening, is slated for release next March. He’s self-publishing the whole series with the help of some enterprising friends (including maybe a Screener or two) and hoping to gain some traction with a Kickstarter campaign, so there’s plenty of conversation material. Oh yeah, and we should probably ask him about the story itself while we have him around. It’s a busy episode, but that about wraps things up. See you next time on the Screeners Podcast!
